INT. MARSHALL HOME/JASON'S BEDROOM - NIGHT - APRIL 12TH OFSENIOR YEAR

JASON MARSHALL (17) is an all-American, high school jock. Heseems to his friends to be somewhat arrogant and a 'big-shot'. But here, he is obviously sad and depressed. He's

sitting on his bed, a piece of creased paper is in hishands.

JASON(whispering)

Mr. Jason Marshall, we are pleasedto tell you that your applicationhas been reviewed, and you areofficially accepted to theUniversity of Southern Californiaon a two-year athleticsscholarship.

JASON'S sentence trailed as he stared at the letter.

JASON(stillwhispering)

This isn't right. This isn't howit's supposed to go.

Inaudible whispering is heard as we see FLASHES of JASON,he's now standing, his hands gripping the back of his deskchair that is partially pulled out from the desk. Next FLASHto JASON standing at the doorway of his bedroom.

FLASH TO

INT. MARSHALL HOME/BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS

JASON is now staring into the mirror and we see he is fullyclothed. He stares at himself a moment for leaning down,picking up a pen and writing on a piece of notebook paper.We see the paper, it says:

Huck, like throwing rocks on the lake. I'm with the onefloating out in the middle. See ya soon, bud.

We now see JASON climbing into the bathtub, which has waterrunning from the faucet into it. JASON let's himself slideback into the tub, his head just below the rim. The waterslowly rises, coming just below his head, when...

INT. HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING - 4 YEARS EARLIER

We see a somewhat younger-looking JASON (14) standing in thedoorway as students pass him left and right. He exhalesdeeply and enters the school. We see a KALEB ADDISON (15), aquirky brunette teen, standing next to him. They both seem

very intimidated and scared.

JASONDude, I don't know about thiswhole high school thing.

KALEBThere's not much we can do aboutit now.

The boys are now winding their way through the hallway,dodging other students as they pass.

JASONMaybe we can take your mom up onthat whole 'homeschool' offer.

KALEB(laughingsarcastically)

She was joking, Jayce.

JASONI wish she wasn't.

KALEBCome on, it's not going to be thatbad.

KALEB seems uncertain of his words and JASON gives him asideways glance.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - LATER

We see two lockers now. The hallway is empty save for ajanitor up the hall a ways creaking his cleaning cartaround. Suddenly, one of the locker doors starts rattling abit.

JASON (O.C.)(sarcastically)

Not too bad, huh, Kaleb?

KALEB sighs noticeably.

KALEB (O.C.)Shut up, Jason.

JASON (O.C.)Who's lockers are these anyways?

KALEB (O.C.)I don't know.

JASON (O.C.)We have to get out of here.

KALEB (O.C.)(very annoyed)

I know that, Jason.

There is silence for a few seconds before the doors startrattling again. Suddenly, a young male comes towards thelockers. It is MATTHEW KERRY (15). He grins slightly as hespins the locks on the lockers. JASON and KALEB sheepishlystep out.

MATTHEWThese are the newbie lockers.

JASON and KALEB exchange a somewhat confused glance.

MATTHEW (CONT'D)I'm Matthew, a sophomore. I takeyou two are freshmen?

JASON and KALEB nod.

KALEBI'm Kaleb.

JASONJason.

MATTHEWThroughout the year, everyfreshman guy is put in these twolockers at some point by the'upper classmen'.

JASONYou mean the seniors?

MATTHEWAnd the juniors.

KALEB, JASON and MATTHEW have now started waking down thehallway as they talk.

MATTHEW (CONT'D)I forgot my backpack so I cameback and I heard the lockersrattling.

KALEB

Were you put in there last year?

MATTHEWOh yeah, dude, of course.

JASONSo how'd you get out? Did abackpack-forgetting sophomorerescue you?

They all laugh as they exit the school.

EXT. SCHOOL GROUNDS - CONTINUOUS

JASON, KALEB and MATTHEW exit the main doors of the school.

MATTHEWNo, actually, the principle foundme around 9:30 that night.

KALEBYou're parents must have beenfreaked out!

MATTHEWYeah, they were. They called thepolice at like, 5 when I never gothome.

KALEBDude, it's already like, almost6:30!

MATTHEW nods his head.

MATTHEWYeah it is...You all might want toget home.

JASON had been noticeably quiet throughout that portion ofthe conversation and he just nods a 'goodbye' to MATTHEW ashe and KALEB start off in an opposite direction.

INT. MARSHALL HOME - EVENING

JASON enters the back door into the kitchen hesitantly,looking around to see if anyone was home. There is silence.

JASON

(calling)Mom? (beat) Dad?

Silence meets his call. JASON enters the kitchen and softlyshuts the door. He seems upset.

JASONHello! I'm home!

Again, there's silence. He walks through the kitchen,leaving his backpack on the table, goes into the livingroom. He sees that there's a flashing '1' on the answeringmachine on the phone. He goes over and clicks a button,waiting for it to play.

EILEENHey Jayce, Dad and I had to leavefor a last-minute dinner party. Weshould be back by 8. There'splenty of food in the fridge, sodon't forget to get something toeat. Jasmine's at a friends houseso you don't have to worry abouther. Bye Sweetie!

MECHANICAL VOICEMessage left at 4:13 PM.

JASON sighs and clicks the button again.

JASON(softly)

It's always a last minute dinnerparty, Mom. Or a spur-of-themoment weekend getaway to Vegasor..

He sighs again.

JASON (CONT'D)Or some sort of trip where I'mforgotten about. Again.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY/KALEB'S AND JASON'S LOCKERS -AFTERNOON - JUNIOR YEAR

JASON and KALEB are standing near their lockers, a few booksin their hands. They are laughing and talking but noticeablekeeping on eye on everyone who passes them.

KALEBYou think they're good?

JASONMaybe.

KALEBWe should go talk to them.

KALEB starts to walk away, but JASON stops him.

JASONNo, no, no, no, wait! There'sstill too many people.

KALEBWhat if they lea-

JASONThey're not going to leave. Theyalways stay later and help Mr.Goehring with the AV equipment.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY OUTSIDE CLASSROOM DOOR - LATER

KALEB and JASON are standing outside the door, obviouslywaiting for something.

KALEB(whispering)

Where are they at?

JASON(whispering)

I don't know, now shh!

MR. GOEHRING (O.C.)

(from insideclassroom)Thanks for helping again, boys.

The door suddenly opens and MR. GOEHRING (30's), a small-framed man with wire-rimmed glasses and sweater vest, stepsout of the room. KALEB AND JASON both turn away, trying thehardest to act nonchalant as he leaves. He nods a 'hello' tothem and they return it. After MR. GOEHRING is gone, KALEBand JASON peak into the classroom and see GARY (14), a tall,skinny, black male with obvious posture problems andHARRISON (14), a short, slightly overweight blond boy with a

'nasal-y' voice. JASON and KALEB enter the classroom, slygrins on their faces.

KALEBWhat's going on, guys?

The two boys look up at them, surprised by their entrance.

JASONWe have something to show you all.

GARYWh-what do you mean?

GARY pushes the bridge of his glasses up his nose.

KALEBWe have something really cool wewant to show you two.

JASONYeah, it's really awesome. Comeon.

HARRISONWell... Okay, I guess.

HARRISON and GARY exchange a glance as they follow JASON andKALEB out of the classroom.

INT. SCHOOL/NEWBIE LOCKRS - A FEW MOMENTS LATER

JASON and KALEB are a little ways ahead of GARY and HARRISONas they approach the already unlocked lockers.

JASON and KALEB exchange devious grins.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - A FEW MORE MOMENTS LATER

JASON and KALEB are walking up the hallway, lockers arerattling in the distance. They're laughing as they step

outside the school.

INT. JASON'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

JASON is lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling. Themoonlight is casting eerie shadows around the room. EILEENand DARREL are heard arguing in the next room. JASON isobviously listening.

No, Darrel! He is YOUR son, too!He's been so distant lately andYOU need to take care of it!

DARREL (O.C.)(muffled)

Oh, so you can't?!


No, of course I can't! I can talkto Jasmine. It's easy talking toher. It's NOT easy trying to talkto that hard-headed son of yours!

DARREL (O.C.)(muffled)

No one said parenting would beeasy, Eileen! You're the one whowanted kids in the first place!


Are you telling me you didn't wantkids?

The arguing becomes inaudible as JASON gets out of his bed.He turns his computer on and silently types something out onthe keys.

JASON (V.O.)They're arguing again. It'ssomething I've grown accustomed toit, yet it still hurts meunimaginably. They put on a facadeof neatness and togetherness, andmake all their rich, preppyfriends believe 'everything'salright' and it's so annoying.Although do I have room to speak?My friends know nothing of thedepression. INT. ADDISON HOME/KALEB'S BEDROOM - AROUND THE SAME TIME

KALEB is lying on his bed, a video gaming magazine, theclock next his bed says that it's rather late. After a fewmoments of silence, there's a light knock at the door.

TEDDY (O.C.)Hey Lil' Bro, I need to talk toyou.

KALEBCome in.

The door opens slowly and we see TEDDY ADDISON (early 20s),average looking male with dark hair and mismatching clothes.

TEDDYI need to show you something.

TEDDY goes over to KALEB'S desk where a computer sits. Heturns it on and starts typing something. KALEB gets off hisbed and joins TEDDY at the desk.

KALEBWhat are you doing?

TEDDYI was just surfing the internet,y'know, cause I was bored, and Ifound something...Strange.

KALEBAnd by strange you mean...

KALEB looks up, wide-eyed, at TEDDY.

INT. SCHOOL AUDITORIUM - DAY - APRIL 9TH OF SENIOR YEAR

An assembly is going on, as the auditorium is packed full ofthe entire student body of the school. PRINCIPLE HENDRICK(50s), a very 'neat' older woman with hair pulled tight in abun and wearing a somewhat formal business suit, is on thestage, along with a few teachers.

PRINCIPLE HENDRICKAnd so, with graduation in just afew short weeks, I would like tocongratulate all of you for makingit these oh, 13 years, in school.May each and every one of youstrive to become the best personyou can be in the coming years.

We see KALEB in the crowd of students now. He is lookingaround for someone, obviously frustrated. MATTHEW is sittingnext to him, listening to PRINCIPLE HENDRICK talk.

KALEBMatt, have you see Jason today?

MATTHEWNo, why?

KALEB shakes his head and settles back in his seat, defeatcrossing his face.

CUT TO: Later

The auditorium is now emptying out as students make theirway out the door. KALEB and MATTHEW are inching along withthe slow-moving line.

MATTHEWDude, chill out.

MATTHEW is grinning slightly as KALEB fidgets and looksaround.

KALEBI'm worried, Man. Jayce hardlyever misses school.

MATTHEWMaybe he's sick.

KALEB(shaking head)

Jason doesn't get sick.

MATTHEW scoffs.

MATTHEWWhat do you mean he doesn't getsick? Everyone gets sick.

KALEB(pointedly)

Not Jason.

INT. MARSHALL HOME - DAY

We see that JASON is dashing about, grabbing things likekeys, his shoes, his backpack. He is standing in thekitchen, putting his shoes on now now.

JASONI can't believe I slept through myalarm!

He stands, situating his backpack on his back.

JASON (CONT'D)I am SO dead!

He starts to walk out of the kitchen, when something catcheshis eye. He turns and looks at the fridge where a dry-erase

board is hung. At the top of the board, it says,'REMINDERS'.

In large letters, we see it reads 'May 13th-Dinner at theJenkins'

In smaller letters and to the side a bit, we see that itreads 'May 13th-Graduation'. Parts of the letters have beenwiped off and it's faded a bit, but it's still blatant.

JASON has a look of complete sorrow on his face. He isheartbroken. He throws his backpack to the floor and sulks

INT. KALEB'S BEDROOM - EVENING - APRIL 12TH

KALEB is sitting at his desk, staring intently at hiscomputer screen. A look of worry and desperation is on his

face. He is seemingly reading something.

JASON (V.O.)I think I'll do it tonight. Thevery few people I do have to livefor, are just pawns in the highschool game. After graduation,we'll all go to college and go ourseparate ways, forgetting of theyouthfulness of high school andmoving on towards 'bigger andbetter things'.

KALEB'S breathing becomes rapid at the conclusion he iscoming to.

JASON (V.O. CONT'D)Well, I've decided that bigger andbetter things await for me beyondthe grave. I am better of dead,then I am alive. I can't be saved,so don't try to stop me. This iswhat I have to do.

KALEB jumps from his desk, grabbing the keys that are lyingon it as he does.

KALEBJason, please don't.

EXT. MARSHALL HOME - LATER

A red car pulls hastily into the driveway of the Marshallhome, KALEB jumps out and runs towards the front door, noteven bothering to knock.

INT. MARSHALL HOME/ENTRYWAY - CONTINUOUS

KALEB comes in the front door, noticing the water spillingfrom the ceiling. He is about to go up the stairs, when heis interrupted by a scream.

EILEEN(O.S.)(sobbing)

Jason, no!

KALEB darts up the stairs, entering...

INT. MARSHALL HOME/HALLWAY - CONTINOUS

KALEB enters the hallway just as DARELL smashes in thebathroom door. EILEEN and DARELL go into the bathroom,horror evident in their faces as they see JASON.

EILEENNooooo, Jason.. Why?

EILEEN is sobbing, engulfed in DARELL'S arms. KALEB backsaway, shocked. He trips over his feet, smashing into thehallway wall. He sinks to the floor, shaking his head.

KALEBNo, no, no, Tom. Why.

KALEB covers his face with his arms, sobbing.

FADE TO:

INT. FUNERAL CHAPEL - MORNING

A small chapel is filled to capacity and then some of familyand friends of JASON. a PREACHER is standing at a pulpit atthe front of the room and to the side. A casket is displayedin the middle of the front of the chapel. Flower bouquetsand displays and pictures are set up around the room. DARRELand EILEEN, along with JASMINE MARSHALL (14), a reservedblonde with dark eyes, and MICHELLE TAYLOR (17), a tall,long-haired brunette with light blue eyes, are sitting inthe front row. The females are all obviously crying, dabbingtheir eyes with tissues every few minutes. DARREL isfighting back tears.

PREACHERWhat can I say of Jason Marshall?He was an amazing athlete. Heplanned on attending college atthe University of SouthernCalifornia on a footballscholarship. He was a great friendto the many he had. A great son,brother and boyfriend.

PREACHER motions in front of him. We see DARREL, EILEEN,JASMINE and MICHELLE.

PREACHER (CONT'D)While the manner in which he hasleft us is heartwrenching, and thereason still a mystery, we mustput our faith in God and trustthat He will see us through thisdifficult time.

EXT. CEMETARY - LATER

An older KALEB ADDISON (18), a tall, dark haired and darkeyed male and JASON'S long-time friend, is standing in aline of people that leads to the open casket. His eyes areovercast and he's obviously heartbroken. He's holding a rose

in one hand, and a small rock in the other. He's staring atthe casket, his eyes now watery.

FLASHBACK TO

EXT. LAKE - DAY (9 YEARS EARLIER)

a YOUNG KALEB ADDISON (9) and YOUNG JASON MARSHALL (8)appear on bikes, coming to a skidding stop near the lakeside. They have backpacks on their backs and they'relaughing and yelling

YOUNG JASONCome on, Kaleb, the rocks areperfect!!

YOUNG JASON is now kneeling to the ground, a few smooth,flat rocks are in his hands. We see the ground is covered insimilar rocks. YOUNG KALEB joins him and they gather a bunchof rocks in their hands. They then walk to the water's edgeand start skipping the rocks as they speak.

YOUNG JASONY'know what I just got donereading, Kaleb?

YOUNG KALEBWhat?

YOUNG JASONTom Sawyer

YOUNG KALEBI've read that! I like Huck!

YOUNG JASONOkay, so you be Huck and I'll beTom Sawyer!

YOUNG KALEBYeah!

YOUNG KALEB launches a rock, obviously straining to makesure it goes far.

YOUNG KALEB (CONT'D)Jace, look!

YOUNG KALEB is pointing out to water where a rock isfloating weightlessly.

YOUNG JASONThat's so cool! It must be a.. A..Magic rock!

YOUNG JASON suddenly drops all of the rocks he held in hishand and waded into the lake.

YOUNG KALEBJason, what are you doing?

YOUNG JASONGetting the magic rock, Huck!

YOUNG KALEB laughs as YOUNG JASON wades in the shallow watertoward the rock.

YOUNG KALEBCome on, Tom!

We see YOUNG JASON is now to the rock. He fishes it out ofthe water and holds it up triumphantly.

YOUNG JASONLook, Huck! I got the Magic Rock!!

YOUNG KALEB throws his hands in the air.

YOUNG KALEBWhoo-hoo!! Magic Rock!!

BACK TO PRESENT

EXT. CEMETARY - SAME TIME

We see KALEB again, he is now in front of the casket.

KALEBAwe, Tom, why?

KALEB has a few tears in his eyes as he puts the rose on topof the casket. We then see KALEB lift JASON'S hand gently,placing the small rock inside of it.

KALEB

(shakily)See ya, soon, Jace.

INT. JASON'S BEDROOM - DAY

KALEB, MICHELLE, and an older MATTHEW KERRY (18), an averagesized blonde haired, blue eyed male, are at various spotsaround the room. There is somber silence.

KALEBWhy do they want us to go throughhis stuff?

MICHELLEWe knew him better then they everdid.

MATTHEWShe's right, I mean, they werealways off at parties orfundraisers or something.

KALEBBut he was their son!

KALEB turns to the other two, his exasperation obvious inhis face.

KALEB (CONT'D)I mean, they didn't know himbefore he died, they should atleast give him the honor of tryingto get to know him now!

MICHELLEKaleb...

KALEB(interrupting)

No! I... I can't do this! My bestfriend just died last week and nowhis own parents are asking us togo through his stuff!

MATTHEWKaleb, we all lost him-

KALEBYou didn't know him like I did!Neither of you did!

MICHELLEWe're not necessarily saying that-

KALEBYou know what? No, that doesn'teven matter. I can't do this!

MICHELLE reaches out to KALEB, trying to comfort him as her

hand rests gently on his arm. His face softens ever-so-slightly as she talks.

MICHELLEI know it must be harder for you,Kaleb. I mean, his suicide note

was addressed to you and-

KALEB yanks his arm away, a snarl returning to his face.

KALEBNo, Michelle! God, why doeseveryone think that?!

MATTHEWKaleb, Dude, come on, calm down.

KALEBNo, 'dude' , I won't calm down!

MICHELLE looks as though she's almost in tears as KALEBcontinues fuming. MATTHEW is desperately trying to calm himdown. He grabs on to KALEB'S arms, shaking him slightly.

MATTHEWKALEB! Man, just stop!! Just stop!

KALEB calms down only long enough to break down in MATTHEW'Sarms, crying.

KALEB(sobbing)

It's not fair! It's just not fair!

MATTHEW(softly)

I know, Man, I know.

MICHELLE is now crying herself and MATTHEW'S eyes arewatery.

MICHELLE(sniffling)

W-We.. We have to just.. Keep

going, guys. We can't bring himback, but we can cope, and we cangrieve, but we have to just...Keep going.

And so they stay like that, embracing each other and softlycying.

I/E. SCHOOL - MORNING

We see an aerial view of the high school campus. Teenagersare moving about, going about their normal, daily routine.

CUT TO:

We are now inside the school. We see MATTHEW and MICHELLEamongst the students. They seem confused.

MATTHEWHave you tried calling him?

MICHELLEYeah, a couple times. It wentstraight to voice mail.

CUT TO:

INT. KALEB'S BEDROOM - AROUND THE SAME TIME

We see KALEB lying, unconscious, on his bed in the verydimly lit room. We see he is obviously breathing, dismissingthe doubt on whether he is alive or not. His hand is lyingoff the side of the bed,a few streaks of blood on it. We seea knife lying on the ground under his hand. We now see hisother wrist has gashes going up it, blood seemingly justpouring out. There is pounding on the door.

TEDDY (O.S.)Kaleb, open the door! What are youdoing?! Open the door, now!!

The doorknob jiggles a bit. It's obvious that it is beingpicked. After a moment, it swings open to reveal TEDDY. Hesees KALEB and rushes to his bedside, frantically lookingaround. He grabs a pair of pants off the floor, un-loopingthe belt that's on it. He takes KALEB'S wounded arm andtightens the belt to the upper part of it. He then takes acell phone out of his pocket and starts dialing.

TEDDY(frantically;scared)

M-my brother, he.. He cut himselfand there's.. There's a lot ofblood.

TEDDY takes a t shirt and presses it firmly to the wounds.

TEDDY (CONT'D)Please help!

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - LATER

KALEB is in the bed, unconscious. The heart monitor isbeeping in long, slow beeps. His heart is slowing down.

DOCTOR (O.C.)

He's lost too much blood!

DOCTOR 2 (O.C.)Where are those transfusions?!

FLASH into DREAM SEQUENCE/FLASHBACK-

EXT. PLAYGROUND - DAY (7 YEARS EARLIER)

YOUNG KALEB and YOUNG JASON are playing on the playground.We see them run around, going on the slide, the monkey bars,and finally the swings. They are swinging as they talk.

YOUNG JASONSo have ya ever tried to swing sohigh, you can't see the ground nomore?

YOUNG KALEBWell yeah! I've done it beforetoo! All I could see was the sky!

YOUNG JASONI wonder what it's like to be abird.

YOUNG KALEBWhat the heck do you mean?

YOUNG JASONI wonder what it's like to be...Up in the sky, just flying aroundwith nothing to do.

YOUNG KALEBMaybe that's how it is whensomeone dies. Maybe they're justfloatin' around in the sky.

YOUNG JASONAre you gonna die, Kaleb?

YOUNG KALEB is shocked.

YOUNG KALEBWell, someday. But not soon!! Ipromise!

The boys continue pumping their legs forward and back,getting higher and higher.

MRS. ADDISON (V.O.)(sobbingfaintly)

Kaleb!! Kaleb, please wake up!!

The scene has now changed. The once playful, beautiful parkis rundown and dreary. The swing set that YOUNG JASON andYOUNG KALEB were just swinging on is now broken and rusty,obviously incapable of being swung on again. The sky is darkand overcast.

YOUNG JASON(sadly)

You have to go back, Kaleb.

YOUNG KALEB(scared andsad)

I... I don't want to go back,Jayce.

YOUNG JASONWhy?

We now see that TEDDY is standing against thewall a ways behind MRS. ADDISON. His arms are crosses overhis chest and he seems more angry then sad. The only noiseis the heart monitor and MRS.
