From Revd. Michael Barter I AM very thankful that the “Great Storm” of November 2013 - or St Jude, as the press dubbed it - came and went, and that it was nowhere near as damaging and destructive as was originally feared, at least for our beautiful little corner of West Sussex.

The worst damage The Rectory incurred was the same as much of the rest of the village; a temporary power cut that plunged us into darkness for a little longer than was comfortable with three young children!

The whole family woke up at around 3AM that day. (You may not be surprised to hear that given our urbanite roots, we were not quite as prepared as we should have been for this event!) We had no torches to hand, and just a couple of small candles. So we stumbled around in the dark, finally lit our candles, and sat together in the pitch blackness, waiting and watching hopefully and expectantly for the light of a new day to break through.

It was a month too early, but our “St Jude experience” was a perfect example of many of the themes we find in the great celebrations of Advent and Christmas. While children everywhere (and perhaps a few adults as well) are waiting hopefully for the arrival of something special on Christmas Day, inside the Church we watch and wait hopefully for the coming of the light of Christ into the darkness of this world. This is not just a sentimental wish but a past, present and future reality for those of Christian faith. The birth of Jesus is not just the beginning of a new life, but the beginning of a new world, a dazzling light that can and will overcome any darkness. That light and that promise can give us the greatest hope. Comfort and joy indeed!

“Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning.”

Wishing you all a most joyful, holy and blessed December,

Michael

St Giles Christmas Fair Saturday 30th November, 10am to 2pm

Any last minute donations for the Raffle, Produce, Silent Auction, Book Stall, Bric-a-Brac, or Bottle Stall would be gratefully received even on Friday or Saturday. We will be setting up from around mid-day on Friday 29th, or leave your donations with me at the West Lodge or with Rev Michael Barter at the Rectory beforehand.

We will need as many volunteers as possible to ensure the smooth running on the Saturday, and if you can spare a couple of hours, you will be very welcome! The more helpers, the better!

I look forward to seeing you on the 30th – many thanks to all who have already donated.

Cancer and Leukemia in Children (CLIC) This charity has been on television twice recently - one an advertisement for CLIC and the other the story of a child with cancer. The advertisement focused on the comfort the child obtained when facing large and noisy equipment for treatment. The sound of mother’s voice when he went into these machines gave the child the confidence to stay calm. Bad enough for an adult but much worse for children. The TV programme told the story of a family - mother, father and children - and a boy aged ten with cancer. It was decided Dad gave up his job and stayed at the hospital while Mother stayed at home to carry on working and caring for the other children. Father was able to stay in the CLIC home near the hospital. All went well but two years later cancer returned and the parents learned he had to lose an eye. It was even more imperative for Dad to be with his son to help him to cope with the trauma. Again the CLIC house was invaluable to enable Dad to stay close to his son. This family is now back together. This is the charity your donations will go to - helping families to support their children during such traumatic experiences.

Appeal for additional shareholders GVSA Ltd is registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965 and is the landlord of the village shop and the picture framer’s workshop. Our constitution allows for village involvement in the form of shares: there is a limit of one £10 share per adult and no dividend is paid. So why should you become a shareholder? Each shareholder receives a personal invitation to the AGM and, importantly, has a vote on who is on the committee. From personal experience shareholders also feel a sense of involvement in the shop and its continuing success. There are currently 218 shareholders. If you are not a shareholder, perhaps a new arrival in Graffham,, and would like to sign up please email me at [email protected] or call me on 01798 867234. If you are unsure if you are already a shareholder I can easily provide clarification. Martin Buckley GVSA Secretary

With disarming frankness, our new rector and chaplain to Seaford College, the Revd. Michael Barter, addressed the November session of the Thursday Club. A well-attended meeting heard of his calling to the ministry, without any family background in the Church, his “light-bulb moment” in recent years and his progression to Graffham. Michael happily took a variety of questions and stayed for tea and a chat afterwards. Many thanks to all who brought and bought seasonal goodies for the Christmas bring-and-buy. This stall together with the raffle contribute welcome funds to the club.

Friday, 13th December is the date of the Christmas lunch at Chichester College of Technology. Lifts will be sorted out, menus confirmed, with a reminder that the balance of £9 each for the lunch is to be paid on the day. We are asked to be at the restaurant at 12 noon for 12.30 p.m.

Arrangements are well in hand for the outing to the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton to see a matinee performance of West Side Story on Thursday, 24th April 2014. The cost, including coach fare, is £30 per head for members and £38 for non-members. At the time of writing, there are four spare tickets available; please ring Sylvia Smith (867 209) or Diane Bellis (867 444) if you are interested in joining us.

We look forward to welcoming members and friends to the first meeting of 2014 on Thursday, 9th January in the Empire Hall, and meanwhile wish you all a Very Happy Christmas with best wishes for the New Year.

GRAFFHAM PARISH COUNCIL (GPC) MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2013

Affordable Housing

The Chairman reported that Hyde Martlett had confirmed that the available house, No. 1, Woodcote Lane, would not be sold and would be available for letting in the coming months. GPC has been asked to “spread the word” in order that bids be submitted once the property is advertised. If anybody knows of local people who want to live in that property, please advise them this house will be available to rent shortly. The Clerk will be seeking further clarification of when this house will become available and how the "bidding" process works. Please contact Tracy Rowe (details below) for further information.

Traffic and parking problems in Village

The matter of parking and traffic problems near Graffham School had been raised by a parishioner. Following a meeting between Cllr. R. Davidson, Cllr. H. Major and Mrs Helen Martin, Head Teacher at Graffham School, parents have received a further reminder stressing the need to park as close to the verge as possible, to ensure that car doors are not left open more than absolutely necessary and, most importantly, that cars are parked for the minimum possible amount of time for dropping off/collection only and not for morning gossip/exchanges of greetings etc.

Concern had also been raised by a parishioner about any potential traffic caused by the new housing development at Seaford College. Confirmation has been received from the Head of Estates and Operations at Seaford College, that sole access is via the main drive from Duncton and that during the contract negotiations for the sale of the land and development opportunity a covenant was installed stating that no vehicular access is permitted by any resident of the development past the last property of the plot i.e. the show house, which from there on is a private road.

Mobile Fish and Chips Van

15

The Parish Council had been approached by Nomads Fish and Chips Ltd and has agreed to them selling fish and chips one evening a week from a mobile van in the Village Shop Car park, for a trial period of three months. At the time of writing, the day of the week had not been confirmed but will be from 4.30pm - 8.00pm, on either Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday.

Vodaphone Coverage in the Village

It was noted that the Vodaphone coverage in the village had not been working for about three weeks. Mobile phone coverage is of major importance to parishioners and it was noted that the problem with the mobile phone coverage was causing significant disruption. Subsequently, the Clerk has written a formal letter of complaint to Vodaphone requesting that the situation be rectified.

New Arrivals in the Village

Graffham Parish Council aims to welcome new arrivals to the village by delivering to them a copy of the Village Directory and informing them about the Graffham Parish News. It would assist the Council if you would kindly notify the Clerk (Tel: 867 020 or [email protected]) of anybody moving into the parish.

For the full draft meeting minutes of the GPC meeting held on Monday 4 November please refer to the website www.graffham.info or the Parish Council notice board outside the Empire Hall.

The Next Graffham Parish Council meeting is on Monday 13 January 2014 Empire Hall at 6.30pm.

News from Seaford College New Scholarship Scheme

A new scheme being introduced by Seaford College is offering a number of new sixth form scholarships for students expected to get straight As and A* grades in their upcoming GCSEs.

The scholarships, worth up to £500, mean successful students would gain the opportunity of tailored sixth-form tuition in small tutor groups, gearing them up for that all-important university place, as well as all the other advantages an independent education has to offer.

The College hopes to give support to scholars in specialist areas, particularly in Sport, Art, Music and Drama.

Seaford College’s academic standing has risen dramatically in recent years and it is no longer a rarity for students to gain Oxbridge places. In recent times, local students Will Avery and Oliver Hancock were both offered places at Oxford and went on to graduate in Management & Economics and Music. Oliver is now an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and has worked with the Jesus College Chapel Choir and Ely Cathedral Girls Choir. Christina Gladkova, from the Czech Republic, went from Seaford to read Natural Sciences at Cambridge while scholarship student Profir-Petru Partachi last year attained a four-year scholarship to King’s College, Cambridge, to read a master’s degree in Computing and Mathematics.

Most sixth form students at Seaford College succeed in obtaining a place at their first choice university - quite an achievement for a school with a non-selective intake and where a large percentage of students have learning support!

Applications are now being invited from Year 11 students predicted to get top grades in next summer’s GCSE examinations. Admission tests will be conducted on November 28.

For further information, please contact Admissions Secretary Julie Mackay on 01798 867456.

For Your Diary …

Midnight in Paris Saturday 25th January, cert 12a, 92 minutes

Graffham Empire Movies are taking a break over Christmas … we resume in January with Midnight in Paris, written and directed by Woody Allen. The film gained Allen an Oscar for best original screenplay in 2012 and is also the most commercially successful film in his entire career.

The film is about a Hollywood screenwriter, Gil Pender (played by Owen Wilson) who is struggling to finish his first novel. Visiting Paris, Gil gets lost in the back streets and finds himself transported back in time to the 1920’s where he meets famous characters including F Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway ...

French Menu at the White Horse

To complement our film night, Adam and his team at the White Horse have planned a French Menu for a pre-film supper of Chicken Chasseuer or Boeuf Bourguignon followed by Tarte au Citron or Crème Brulee.

A ticket price of £20 includes your meal, entry to the film, and a coffee and chocolate brownie in the interval. Please book in advance with The White Horse on 01798-867331 before 9 pm on Sunday 20th January. Supper will be served from 6pm, but arrive early so you don’t miss the start of the film.

It was the best of years, it was the worst of years

We've reached the end of another year and what a year it's been! The first six months of 2013 were chaotic for weather, wildlife....and me! Because I have to write my monthly articles for the Graffham parish magazine a few weeks before the magazine is printed I have to take a leap of faith and predict the weather and wildlife for my upcoming article. Looking back over 2013 I think I started three articles by saying "Spring's finally here" only to have the article appear in the magazine while England continued to be battered by rain, freezing temperatures and even snow! You must have all thought I was crazy! Winter seemed to drag on and on - it was the coldest spring since 1962. Even in mid-June, when I was out walking around Graffham Down with Paul Dimmer and Dianne Hardcastle, the Sussex countryside was like a ghost town - no butterflies or other insects, no birds singing. It was spooky and rather worrying. And then at the end of June it was as if someone had flicked a switch and summer suddenly appeared. And what a summer it was!

It was amazing to see how quickly our wildlife responded to the glorious hot weather. Our woods and meadows were filled with butterflies, bees and birds. In many cases some of our butterfly species had a great year. I had reports of gardens filled with peacocks and small Tortoiseshells. It seems that our wildlife has an amazing ability to withstand poor weather and to bounce back . However, what wildlife can't withstand is loss of habitat and so it was great to see that in 2013 wildlife-rich habitats like the downland of Graffham Down and the heathland of Graffham Common are continuing to extend and improve.

Page 21: Magazine printed by Sarum Graphics Limited - · PDF fileMagazine printed by Sarum Graphics Limited Cover Photo : ... I AM very thankful that the “Great Storm” of November 2013

19

Over on our Graffham Common reserve we've been pleased with how the habitat has responded to our heathland restoration work. Graham Ault, our volunteer reserve manager, has been monitoring the work at Graffham Common. The foresters have been busy and we are thrilled to see the heather is returning and we were especially thrilled by Ginny's report of nightjars returning to the area. Graham recently led a group from the Apuldram Centre in Chichester around Graffham Common. The centre offers meaningful daytime occupational activities to adults with learning disabilities and the group were able explore the common and collect branches from the recently felled pines to turn into festive reindeer Christmas decorations which they sell to raise money for the charity.

So here's wishing you all a very Merry Christmas from Jane, Graham and myself. Let's hope 2014 is more predictable!

It’s been another busy few weeks across the Federation with Forest School Halloween celebrations and visits from local magistrates.

Our Year Five children (Kestrel class) have just finished an enjoyable stint in the forest. Once again, the forest has provided many life long memories with the chance to consolidate old forest skills as well as learning new ones. Kestrel class have been experimenting with different knots, including square lashing. They have been using their new skills to build different shelters. Marta, Poppy and Mishka decided to build a ‘non bus stop’ for the animals of the forest, apparently no buses ever turned up! Another highlight for many of the children was learning how to light a fire safely using fire steels, cotton wool and kindling from the forest. These skills were later put to the test when a rabbit was cooked on the fire; all were very brave and tried a little bit! With the forest having a rest from us for a while, the children spent their last session returning it back to its natural state ready for the animals during the colder months.

Congratulations must go to our PTA who organised a spectacularly successful and spooky Halloween party which was held at Graffham’s recently refurbished Sports Pavilion. This was a great opportunity for our infant and junior children to come together. The Infant children were particularly enthusiastic about this party and have had plenty to say about the event:

“It was very dark and a green light was shining on a huge tree. When people walked past it their shadows looked like a ghost” Furse Simpson.

“We waited at the entrance and hid behind the pumpkins, then, we made people jump!” Sam Holland and Ethan Jackson

Lottie Hayes had fun with all her family “my brother got soaked doing apple bobbing!”

Peregrines (year six) have been visited by some local magistrates from Chichester. Time was spent discussing how a court works, the role of a jury and why you might end up there in the first place! The children particularly enjoyed the drama element of this learning experience with many of them assuming the roles of criminals! The class felt that this had been a valuable way to help them make the right choices as they grow up. They also now understand that the consequences of crime can be quite serious.

Duncton is now the proud new owner of many junk models. Inspiration has been taken from the WEEE man (a 3.3 tonne sculpture, representing the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment thrown away) and the story The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This work has supported our current theme of Eco warriors and all of the models have been made from recycled materials. We think you’d agree that all the models are spectacular.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy Christmas and healthy New Year.

Kind Regards,

Helen Martin (Headteacher)

A Successful Conservation Trust established 30 years ago in 1983

When the Trust was first established in 1983, it started to manage a 5 acre area of chalk grassland and meadow known as Long Meadow. It now manages 5 reserves of 76 acres; an area of high diversity and interest within the South Downs National Park.

During these 30 years, the number of species of plants and butterflies has increased significantly, many of which are rare and unusual. More birds and other wildlife are now attracted to the area and the Trust has worked with other conservation groups, and has organised work parties, picnics, events and talks over the years.

It is now home to national and international rare species and rare communities of chalk heath, chalk grassland and scrub.

After the particularly good year in 2013 for butterflies, the work parties have been enthusiastically clearing areas and tidying up and it has been great to welcome new members who are helping with

the work on the Reserves towards part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Having been keen to develop good working relationships with other organisations including The South Downs National Park, Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Sussex

Branch of Butterfly Conservation, these groups have been visiting the reserves, providing assistance and advice and working with our members during the year and we look forward to this continuing in 2014.

Paul Dimmer’s work parties are going on throughout the winter period – the next one being 7th December. Please contact Paul on 01798 867454 for more information or just turn up at 10am at the steel gate near Ladywell Cottage. No experience needed, just willingness to join in. Bring strong gardening gloves, bow saws, loppers, hooks or tools suitable for scrub bashing and if you’re staying for the afternoon, bring a drink and something to eat.

……….and as for Christmas presents for the person who has everything, why not consider a gift of membership to help provide a better future for our wildlife and rare species here in Graffham.

If you would like to find out more about what we do or perhaps would like some ideas on how to encourage a greater variety of butterflies in your own gardens, please join us at the White Horse for the Parish Breakfast in December which is open to ladies as well as men and you will be assured of a warm welcome. (Please book with the White Horse in advance)

Another season over and time for everyone to embellish their achievements of the previous summer. It was another successful season. Thanks to Simon Mitchell for organising the fixture list, Piers Barrett for his dedication to preparing a superb wicket and outfield, Bill Barrett for co-ordinating the tea-roster and to everyone else who played a part in keeping Graffham Cricket club alive and kicking. The life time achievement thanks goes to our departing Chairman Sam Ward who worked tirelessly for decades in making Graffham Cricket club what it is today.

In 2014 we will have a wonderful new pavilion to enjoy. The efforts of Simon Mitchell and Ginny Barrett, as well as, no doubt, many others, have created a venue that any sports club would be envious of. So a special thanks from everyone at the cricket team for their efforts.

So on to my review of 2013. The season started with a victory against Steep, a strong team, which were blown away by a blistering century from Leon Fourie (107) and some miserly bowling from new signing, Chris May (7 overs for 3 runs).

Next up was Fernhurst. On a bitterly cold day in early May there was nowhere to escape the elements. The game was shortened to a quick 25:25 game due to the weather and at the end Fernhurst could not quite get the runs and fell short by 10 runs. The target we set them of 115 was largely due to Mark Dally’s 58 not out. Another new signing, Dan Joseph, bowled a devastating 4 overs for 9 runs as well as removing their two star batsmen for very little.

West Sussex Wanderers arrived at the end of May for their annual thrashing, which meant that Richard Riddell scored his first 50 for the club. Amongst other contributions we amassed 221 runs. In return they managed just 67 runs where the pick of the bowlers was Geoff Coulsen bowling 5 overs taking 3 wickets and only conceding 8 runs.

With 3 wins out of 3 we were to miss out on a forth win by coming up against a strong Kirdford team. We only arrived with 9 players, which was always going to make defending whatever total we could achieve difficult. Mark Dally top scored with 63 helping us to a total of 169 and although we managed to take 6 wickets our score was

never going to be enough.

With a week to go before the Festival of Speed we were invited to play at Goodwood, a real privilege as one can imagine; hopefully we did enough to merit another invite next year. We bowled and fielded very well to contain their score to just 159. We thought this was competitive but with both our openers Joe Pink and Bill Barrett removed for just 1 run the pressure was on. Leon Fourie, Chris May (65) and myself lead the fight back by adding 128 runs for the next 3 wickets. In sight of victory the final 5 wickets fell in classic Graffham style (4 ducks and 1 scrambled run) meant we fell 9 runs short.

Lodsworth came to Graffham the following weekend and were simply outclassed and beaten quite handsomely by 136 runs. Iain Stevenson (76*) and Ryan Lewis 3 overs for 6 runs and 4 wickets were the pick of some fine performances by everyone.

It was another month before we played again. A hot day visiting Bosham in what appeared to be an oval pitch roughly carved out of a field of wheat. The pitch was lethal for the batsman to play on and so the bowlers were restricted to just a few paces. With a lack of opposition numbers (they arrived with 6) the game had to be a reduced 20:20 format where Bill and Kenny kindly agreed to play for the oppo. We won quite easily with Josh Cowell top scoring with a thumping 31 including 3 sixes.

Kirdford came for the return match in early August. Guest captain Richard Riddell was perhaps a little too generous with our bowlers as the oppo were allowed to score 215 runs for the loss of just 2 wickets. The batting order was swapped around and the gamble almost paid off as Richard Riddell opened (47) and Josh Cowell featured a lot lower in the order (40*) meant that we fell short by just 4 runs.

West Sussex Wanderers returned for the testimonial of retiring Chairman, Sam Ward. Graffham batted first and achieved an unassailable score of 262. Leon Fourie top scoring with (73), Mark Dally (65) and young Thomas Creed achieving a personal best of 38 not out. Due to the occasion we perhaps lacked the ruthlessness to finish them off during their innings and so the match ended in an enjoyable draw.

Stansted Park beat us rather comfortably by 64 runs in our penultimate game with Greg Jansz offering the only resistance with

Page 32: Magazine printed by Sarum Graphics Limited - · PDF fileMagazine printed by Sarum Graphics Limited Cover Photo : ... I AM very thankful that the “Great Storm” of November 2013

30

a swashbuckling 36 from just a couple of overs.

We also came up short in our final game with Singleton. Some tidy bowling from Graffham and 3 wickets from Thomas Creed meant they had set us a target of 149. New signing ‘M’ Patel dazzled the rest of us with a confident debut score of 70 before the rest of Graffham collapsed to all out for 121.

And so there we have it a mixed season where honours were even 5 wins 5 losses and 1 draw. On a personal level I would like to thank the committee for the opportunity of skippering for the last three seasons. I am now moving on to pastures new in East Sussex but will always remember with fond memories everyone in Graffham.

Graffham Festival 2013 Our beautiful downland village of Graffham and its surrounding countryside have long been an inspiration to artists. Victorian naturalist painter H.H. La Thangue lived here from 1898 to 1926, painting scenes from Sussex rural life. Ivon Hitchens, one of the “London Group” moved from London during the second world war to live in the woodlands at East Lavington where he too painted mostly outdoors. Many other artists have lived here in the past.

Graffham continues to draw artists in the twenty-first century. Today there are around a dozen different painters, potters and other artists living in or within a very short distance of our village.

Our contemporary Graffham artists are getting together next year to arrange an “Open Studios” event where villagers and outsiders can come and see their work. “Open Studios” will be a celebration of local artistic talent. This item has blossomed, however, into a more ambitious project and the aim is now to incorporate the event into a wider artistic and community programme - a Graffham Festival celebrating visual and performing arts and some community and social events which we also do so well here in Graffham!

The provisional Festival dates are 19th to 26th July - put them in your diary now so you can be part of the celebration.

What would YOU like to see at our First Graffham Festival?

The programme may include:

Open Art Studios Open Gardens A Flower Festival A Festival Service A Jazz Night A Quiz Night A Public Lecture

A Concert A One Act Play A Poetry Reading A Children’s Circus A Dance A Village Picnic

If you have an idea you think would work at the Festival, if you would like to help in the organisation, or, if you are an artist or craftsperson who would like to open your studio to the public please contact Richard Davidson on 01798 867 232.

Foodbank for Petworth Area Petworth Area Churches Together are opening a satellite of the Chichester based Trussell Trust Foodbank to serve the Petworth area.

Chichester Foodbank provides 3 day emergency food parcels to families and individuals who are struggling to put food on the table because of low income or a sudden crisis - redundancy, benefit delays/changes and unexpected bills. Their Distribution Centre is in Chichester, but they aim reach out into the rural areas and set up satellite centres because clients cannot always afford to come into Chichester to collect their food parcels.

The Foodbank only started in September 2012 and has already fed over 700 people who due to an economic crisis have found themselves with no money for food. In partnership with 55 front line agencies, who hold food vouchers, they have been able to identify those who are in crisis and help support them through a difficult time. This is a community project that has received an amazing amount of public support through volunteering, food donation and financial gifts.

If you would like to volunteer to help with this project there are several ways to do this.

Helping at a food collection point Helping to sort food for distribution Meeting clients and giving out food Donating food (Please ask for list of appropriate items first) Fundraising or monetary donation Chichester Foodbank

To volunteer to help locally please write or email John Riddell, contact details below. The Petworth initiative is being run by PACT but there is no need to belong to PACT or attend Church to help!
