    WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

From cover to cover, this issue highlights connections we have at Hunters Run—to the club and to each other. With the introduction of our new Facebook Page, there is a new way to interact on a regular basis. At this time of year, many members travel to various places—and our specially designed global map shows their connections in various states as well as around the world. One example is the number of families who reside in the same three-building complex in New York during the summer. And, here, we continue to find personal connections at the various venues, enjoying Karaoke nights and the special Terrace setting for dining and entertainment. But the epitome of connections to Hunters Run is the dedication and commitment of our longest serving employees, some of whom have been part of our daily life for more than 15 years. Our special photo spread pays tribute and thanks to them. — S.W.

Dear Members,We live in the information age. Media constantly reminds us of that fact. It’s no different at Hunters Run, but many members are unsure of how much information is provided for their use and edification or may not know how to access it. As your families and friends communicate and connect with you and each other through a variety of means (face-to-face conversations, postal mail, house phone, cell phone, texts, email, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), Hunters Run communicates and connects with you through the same and additional methods:• board meetings, their meeting minutes, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, committee

leadership and meeting dates, and other board actions, etc. posted on our website,• monthly postal mailings containing your monthly statement and flyers, • frequent emails about upcoming dinners and events, golf, tennis, bridge, Special Interest

Clubs, etc., and when some facilities are open or closed,• our website with membership directory, calendars, and the capability of allowing you to

perform all sorts of tasks, such as golf and tennis reservations, dining reservations, dress codes, event lotteries and other reservations, etc.

    • digital signage in the Main Clubhouse and Tennis Center containing information about current and upcoming activities,

    • Media Centers with flyers in the Main Clubhouse and Tennis Center• our Hunters Run Magazine published every other month, showcasing events that have

occurred, as well as unique stories about members and our various activities, • the new Hunters Run Facebook Page highlighting recent news and upcoming events, and• conversations with our Lobby Front Desk personnel and other staffAnother way to get information about goings on at Hunters Run, including course conditions, tee times and other happenings, is by watching the two Hunters Run TV channels (9001 & 9002) provided by Hotwire. Our goal is to ensure that you know what is happening in our country club and that you know how to get information you want and how to take advantage of the amenities we provide. To paraphrase a famous slogan: “A well informed member is our best member.”Best regards,

    MW’s Terrace

From the time it opened, the Terrace was designed to be a focal point for members to use in many different ways. Now we can have breakfast, lunch, or dinner overlooking the beautiful pool area. Enjoy Happy Hour outdoors as well as all kinds of entertainment. And, a new addition to our Coffee Bar, with a variety of hot and cold specialty coffee drinks. All year round, the Terrace is the perfect setting. And, new wind screens have just been ordered, which will “protect us from sunlight, winds and light rains, enabling even greater use by members,” according to Steve Perlmutter, chair of the Food & Beverage Committee.

Where are you going this year? Will it be the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour (see article on page 9). Or, some of the places and experiences you shared with us last summer: playing golf in Wales or Westchester, taking a Danube River cruise or boating on Long Island Sound. Or, just getting together with other Hunters Run members---old friends, new friends, golf buddies, tennis teammates, in all kinds of fun and memorable settings.

We hope you will send photos and short descriptions to [email protected]. Have a great summer!

    HERE, THERE

    & EVERYWHERE

WHERE DO WE COME FROM?? B y Susan BraitmanWe are a diverse group from various parts of the world. Snowbirds think of Hunters Run as their home away from home. They hail from 19 states and the District of Columbia, as well as five foreign countries. Most come from states east of the Mississippi — others from as far away as California and Brazil.

According to Dena Pedrick, our Director of Membership, over 45% of our residents only have one address, making Hunters Run their year-round home.

But wherever we call home, we always look forward to meeting up again for another fun season at Hunters Run.

Brenda and Arnie Turok live on the 30th floor of Building 2 at North Shore Towers.

Brenda and Arnie are enthusiastic about the facilities that surround them. The arcade contains two coffee shops, a drug store, a supermarket, a dry cleaner, a movie house and a gym. There is the beautiful golf course, and a tennis pro available. One of the best things is the fine maintenance staff, ready to help with any problems. Also, the doorman is very friendly, ready to take packages and messages at all times.

David and Marion April have been enjoying the life at North Shore Towers for 25 years. They live on the 27th floor of Building 3. Marion enjoys playing mahjongg and canasta with friends in the complex, and David is president of The Computer Club. He is the leader and founder of “Nextdoor Social Network,” bringing residents together in this large community, just as he has

you get on the elevator and go downstairs to buy them. If you need a podiatrist, drugstore, bank or dry cleaner, just get onto the elevator.” The location makes it easy to visit friends, children and grandchildren in the area.

Roz Wells/Newburgh has lived on the 31st floor of Building 3 for the past five years. She moved there from her home in Sag Harbor, L.I., because she was impressed with the many amenities the complex had to offer. She says that in some ways it mirrors Hunters Run because of the swimming pools, golf and tennis. Shortly after moving, Roz met Ralph Wertheimer, who was renting at Hunters Run and who also lived at North Shore Towers. After moving in together at Hunters Run, they recently bought a larger apartment together in The Towers, and now Roz and Ralph live on the 21st floor of Building 2. They both feel they are enjoying country club life in Hunters Run as well as North Shore Towers.

SUMMERTIME IN THE TOWERSNorth Shore Towers in Queens, New York, is home during the summer months to a growing number of Hunters Run residents. More than 40 members currently have apartments in The Towers, as it is called—a three-building residential cooperative which sits on 10 acres of property located on the highest point of land in Queens County.

The buildings contain 1,844 apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. The complex has an 18-hole golf course, its own power plant and an indoor shopping concourse that connects the three residential buildings, along with indoor and outdoor swimming pools. It is the only gated residential community in New York City. Several of the Hunters Run residents residing in The Towers have plenty to say about this unusual residence.

done at Hunters Run. Up until recently, he was a frequent player on the beautiful golf course on the property. Their stay during the summer months enables them to visit often with their three children living on Long Island.

Norma Grill has lived on the 20th floor of Building 2 for the past six years. She enjoys the easy access to Manhattan to spend the day at museums and Broadway shows. Convenience is the word for Norma to describe North Shore Towers. “The best thing is that when you need some bananas

Marilyn and Jack Agin have lived on the 27th floor of Building 3 for the past eight years. They decided to move there because the apartments were so spacious and the views so beautiful. They realized that there were not that many condo developments so close to the city, and the apartments have no stairs. They love living in The Towers and feel that it is just like living in a hotel. If anything goes wrong they just pick up the phone and the maintenance crew appears. They love their terrace which has a beautiful view of Lake Success. Golf, tennis - this has it all. Marilyn says, “It is also very nice to see so many people enjoying their lives.”

Leonard and Marilyn Kresch have lived at North Shore Towers for one and a half years, and enjoy the beautiful view from their large two-bedroom apartment on the 25th floor of Building 2, encompassing the Atlantic Ocean on the south to Connecticut in the north, with a good view of the entire city - the bridges and Long Island Sound. Socially there are many activities and Leonard enjoys the Men’s Club. There are duplicate bridge tournaments at local temples. The ease of getting into Manhattan is just wonderful. Leonard and Marilyn feel lucky to be living in such a unique and pleasurable place.

Loretta Katz has been living on the 25th floor of Building 2 for the past 37 years! Her residence first began as a rental, and then The Towers started operating as a condominium. Her grandchildren come often and they loved to swim in the kiddie pool when they were small. She enjoys having both indoor and outdoor pools easily accessible. She

says that so many friends are lately moving into The Towers, even friends from her old kindergarten days. The maintenance is fabulous - no worry about arranging for plumbers or electricians - all just a phone call away and they almost immediately arrive to do the job. Loretta says a typical day might include golfing on the golf course, having lunch, seeing a movie in the beautiful large movie house, and then having a lobster roll up in the dining room with friends. In the evening, Loretta loves to look out upon the beautiful view of the New York City skyline and feels very lucky to have been able to live such a beautiful life for so many years.

Mel Fox has lived in The Towers for almost 30 years. He also has been a resident of Hunters Run, first as a snowflake and now as a snowbird, for close to 20 years. He resides on the 27th floor of Building 3, where he enjoys seeing many Hunters Run residents and that “makes it all feel like home.” Mel says, “I look forward to coming here to join up with the friendliest folks ever.”

These Hunters Run members, and others who live in North Shore Towers, all agree that they have the best of both worlds: they have all the amenities of a country club lifestyle in Florida and then when they head north for a few months, many of the same activities and services are available to them in a different setting.

Rowena Melman was a longtime resident of Long Island. When she recently sold her home, she moved into North Shore Towers, on the 20th floor of Building 2. She loves to tell her story. “I recently returned from Florida and my car was packed and loaded up. All I could think about was how was I going to get all of it up to the 20th floor? When I arrived at the building my doorman greeted me…'Welcome Home, Mrs. Melman. Go right up. The porter will unload the car and bring it all up.' Everything was in my bedroom in minutes. It was lunchtime and there was nothing in my apartment...I can get almost anything I need right downstairs - groceries, fruit, pharmacy, cleaners, art studio, movie theater, cleaners. Even a patch of land if you enjoy gardening. Any problems in the apartment - maintenance will be right up. And - everyone is so nice. Is it a good place to be? For sure!”

Barney and Harriet Masnick moved from their home in Merrick, L.I., and North Shore Towers was their best choice for many reasons. They are on the 14th floor of Building 2. There are always events taking place ranging from lectures to shows to dinner dances. It is a very friendly and welcoming community and they are happy

to be a part of it. The concierge is on 24 hours daily - good security. The parking is underground. They are centrally located between their three daughters and enjoy all of the many amenities North Shore Towers offers. It is a pleasure for Barney and Harriet to close their door in the winter, come down to Hunters Run, and know that their apartment up North is safe and secure. Barney says, “This place is like a self-contained city, and even has its own zip code!”

Bruce and Linda Savid have been residents for the past 15 years, on the 28th floor of Building 1. Bruce likes to say that the Towers is a vertical country club. He has served on the Towers Board for two years. They enjoy participating in all the activities that North Shore Towers offers.

    F E A T U R EBRAVING THE WILDERNESS: ADVENTURES OF

A KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL TOURHOW DOES A DRIVING VACATION FROM HUNTERS RUN SOUND? WELL, WE’VE DONE IT AND IT PROVIDES LOTS OF FUN AND INTERESTING SITES. SO LET’S TAKE A JOURNEY…

    By Reneé Pravda

There’s nothing better than a good ol’ classic. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour is an experience that keeps visitors sipping, strolling and savoring their way across the Bluegrass on this Bourbon Distillery adventure.

DAY 1 – Head north to the town of Helen, GA. (10 hrs from home) set among the Appalachian foothills. Helen has deep Native American roots, a rich history as a logging town and is now known for its Bavarian-style food and culture. Exploring the town and the surrounding area gives you a glimpse into this town's rich history.

DAY 2 – Drive towards Louisville, KY (6 hrs/45 min) with a stop at Buffalo Trace Distillery, a 400-acre National Historic Landmark, located in Frankfort, KY. Walk amidst the path of rolling bourbon barrels. You will be captivated by the atmosphere and alluring smell of bourbon inside the aging warehouses. When entering the renowned Blanton’s Bottling Hall (limited production bourbon) you will see signature bourbons being filled, sealed, labeled and packaged – all by hand. View how bourbon is made up close.

Twenty minutes of travel provides viewing scenery that doesn’t get much better than the Lexington area, home of several Kentucky Derby winners, dozens of beautiful thoroughbred farms and even a genuine castle! A breathtaking drive past some of the world’s fastest horses will bring you to another to the historic Woodford Reserve Distillery provides a very

interesting history of the distillery along with a bourbon tasting that consists of more than 200 flavor notes from bold grain and wood, sweet aromatics, spice and fruit along with florals. Lexington has long been known for its legendary racehorses and its great bourbon. Together with excellent cuisine and shopping, Lexington, the Horse Capital of the World, is the perfect place to recharge for your next day of bourbon adventures.

DAY 3 - An hour and 20 minute drive today brings you to Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby. Experience the exciting and colorful spectacle of Thoroughbred racing at this legendary venue. Stroll through its historic grounds, watch the horses as they work out and enjoy the ambiance of one of the most renowned spots in American sports.

Another fun spot to visit is the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, making baseball bats since 1884. Walk through the factory and watch the bats being made. Louisville Slugger baseball bats are a part of our American history.

DAY 4 – Today’s drive (I hr/15 min) is to Lebanon, literally the “heart” of Kentucky… the Bluegrass State. There’s a lot of history in this small town with the Civil War Trail. One of Kentucky’s most remote and charming distillery properties is well worth the trek.

While at Maker’s Mark you will see the barrels aging sweetly beneath the Chihuly blown glass. Two college friends who later married began this distillery in 1953. Bill Samuels used his 170-year-old family recipe, and his wife Margie designed the bottle, label, its signature red wax top and even the name. She was the first woman elected to the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. Don’t forget to dip your own bottle in the gift shop.

Drive 20 minutes before ending your day with a different take on bourbon. At Angel’s Envy, they age their bourbon in ruby port wine casks giving it a subtle depth of flavor. Experience the distillation process from beginning to the finished spirit.

Continue your journey (45 min) to historic Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World. Heaven Hill is the nation’s largest family-owned spirits producer since 1935. Taste brands such as Elijah Craig, Larceny, Henry McKenna and many others. This tour shows you how they age and produce some of the world’s finest bourbons.

  • 10 JULY/AUGUST 2019 Hunters Run Country Club

DAY 5 – Head for Nashville, TN (2 hrs/20 min) and listen to legendary country music at the famed Grand Ole Opry. Also, visit The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Live honky-tonk music fills the streets and the barbeque is delicious.

DAY 6 – (2 hrs/45 min) This trip could not be complete without visiting Lynchburg, TN, the home of Jack Daniel’s whiskey. Small town values and perfect Americana living are alive and well in Lynchburg, a small town of about 5,000 in the rolling hills of Tennessee. It might be small, but it’s home to one large industry – the Jack Daniel Distillery – which is the oldest registered distillery in the United States. Every ounce of Jack Daniel's whiskey is produced here. Have a behind-the-scenes look at how “Jack” is made with a memorable stop at historic Barrelhouse 1-14, where you will sip a flight of five “Jack” products.

    THE WHISKEY’S FREE!

It is ironic that even though the operational distillery is a major tourist attraction, Lynchburg’s home county of Moore is a dry county. During the tour, you can buy Jack Daniel’s whiskey at their shop or in the distillery general store in town, a short distance down the road. But, they cannot technically sell the whiskey in either place, so there is a bit of a loophole—they will sell you a souvenir bottle…and the whiskey comes in it for free!

DAY 7 – This is when you head back towards Florida and Hunters Run. A terrific stop on the way is the Lakeridge Winery, located in Clermont, FL, producing fine Florida wines. View the production area and the spectacular view of the vineyards where the grapes are grown and harvested. The Wine Tasting is held at the large tasting counter. A selection of award-winning wines ranging from dry to sweet with sparkling are usually offered.

You did it! You’ve now joined the ranks of thousands of other bourbon lovers, or those wanting to learn more about this all-American drink, who have gone before you into the brave wilderness of Kentucky and Tennessee. Congratulations!

Fishing At Hunters Run: That’s A Big One!Can you guess how many lakes there are in Hunters Run?* I suspect you will be surprised at the number. They beautify the grounds and offer the added benefit of providing the community fisher-people with a convenient opportunity to pursue their hobby. These lakes are sustained by an intricate weave of culvert pipes that originate from the canals on the north and south sides of the property. Weekly maintenance to treat for algae and invasive grasses is required to keep them looking beautiful and allowing them to serve as a breeding ground for the many varieties of fish that make their way into the ponds from the canals and through the pipes. Our fishermen strictly catch and release their trophies as the surface runoff from the roads, individual communities and the golf courses render the fish inedible. Among the fish inhabiting our waters is a species known as Peacock Bass, part of the Cichlidae family. Because of their proclivity to eat just about anything, these fish were originally imported from South Africa in the 1980’s to eat the many fish dumped into Florida’s canal system. Since the Peacock Bass have very indiscriminating feeding habits, they are desirable to local fishermen both because they will eat just about any bait offered and because they consume predatory fish, including piranha. *ANSWER 59

Day in and day out, year after year, they have been here wherever we go, for whatever we need, to make our lives more comfortable and fulfilling as members of Hunters Run. WTD-18 By Diane SorokaSummer is all about sunshine, dinner on MW’s Terrace, swimming in the Hunters Run beautiful pool, pizza in the Atrium, and GOLF. Although the temperature and humidity soar, you can still find our WTD ladies having fun playing in the league. If you are not a member of the WTD, you can join us for the summer. We’d love to have you. Just stop in the Golf Shop for a form.

A big Thank You goes out to Emily Singer and Sue Layton, who chair our Charity Events. This year we were proud to make donations to three outstanding charities. Emily and Sue loaded up their car with golf related items and headed straight to the First Tee and Junior Golf of The Palm Beaches. These wonderful organizations were also presented with a check so that they can continue to offer educational and golf programs for young people and veterans. The WTD also collected toiletries and baby items for AVDA (Aid to victims of domestic abuse). The Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen provides healthy and nutritious meals to all those that are in need. Our collection of canned goods and non-perishable food went a long way in helping these families. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our WTD members who helped fill our collection bins. THANK YOU.

Stay cool, drink plenty of water and take a refreshing wet towel. See you around the green.

With our 2018-2019 season behind us, we can reflect on the successes of our League. Beginning in November 2018, we welcomed previous members back from their Northern clubs and acquired new members to Hunters Run. We are involved in charity work for The Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen. We collected for Thanksgiving and Christmas for the many families that rely on The Soup Kitchen for meals and Christmas gifts that bring joy to the little ones. Our WTD9 Luncheon was held in January and our Club did a wonderful presentation. It was enjoyed by all. In March, the Nine Hole Ladies Member Guest was held and Doris Margulies and Lorraine Siedman wove their magic again this year.We are in the process of organizing next year’s events and would love to hear from you. Please call to join our committees:Dee Altman. 561-336-2959 or 513-317-2725Maddy Stern. 561-752-2090In closing, we would like to wish you all a Healthy and Happy Summer! Looking forward to your return or the beginning of League play in October.

H O N O R I N G J E R I E W I N GHunters Run member Jeri Ewing was honored this year at the annual “Jeri Ewing Eclectic” tournament, named for her, which is organized by the Palm Beach County Women’s Golf Association. Jeri has been involved with the association since its inception in 1963. A group of very happy Hunters Run golfers participated in the sold out event, which attracted players from all over the county. “It was a wonderful day honoring our dear friend and fearless leader---The One and Only Jeri Ewing,” says Jodi Kaplan. According to John Oyler, our Director of Golf, “Jeri is loved by everyone in our community. She won the club championship in 2000 and 2001 and has competed on a high level in many amateur events throughout her career. Jeri has been an active member of our golf committee for many years and her knowledge of Hunters Run and its history is unsurpassed.”

Marathon Golf Tournament The 2019 Marathon Golf campaign turned out to be a banner year for “Team Hunters Run.” Marathon Golf is an annual fundraiser sponsored by the Seminole Region of the Club Managers Association of America, where clubs play as many holes of golf as possible in one day – collecting bids and donations to raise money for South Florida children’s charities. On Friday, May 31st, “Team Hunters Run” played a record 550 holes of golf in the heat on the East Course! Overall, the nine-player team averaged nearly 68 holes of golf per person – led by Director of Golf John Oyler with 100 holes played. Other members of the team were: Ray Nalbandian, Graham Cordrey, Todd Stanchfield, Gary Tschaepe, Mike Franke, Dave Cordrey, Jared Bear and John Freeland.

The team also collected a record-setting $6,500 from generous Hunters Run members – easily topping the previous high of $5,000 set in 2017. Overall, Marathon Golf raised more than $400,000 this season – and has collected more than $1.9 million in the past nine years. On behalf of “Team Hunters Run,” thank you, Hunters Run members, for your generous donations to help children who need – and deserve – our help.

The four of us happily finished playing in the WTD Tuesday Golf tournament and headed for lunch in the Main Dining Room. First, we talked with vigor of our positive and supportive team efforts and the ongoing challenge of the game of golf. Muriel Datloff had just checked with the professionals and reinforced the rule; a practice tee shot that mistakenly hits the ball is a do-over, but hitting the ball on a practice shot anywhere else on the course is counted as a stroke.

Bobbi Nusbaum was enthusiastic as she told us of her upcoming trip to Israel to celebrate a family member’s milestone. That led to our speaking about different languages, home and border security and guns. What emerged were our strong connections, our stories, legacies, and similarities as well as different points of view. We bonded, we shared. Best of all, we made discoveries that led to knowing our team members in new and intriguing ways. So, it was with decided interest and surprise when we discovered that our teammate, Malya Scher was trained to shoot guns, three different types including an uzi. She spent one and a half years in the Israeli army. She was then an 18- year-old with a command of several languages, including Arabic. Malya came as a visitor to the U.S., went to school in California, married, had children and became a Hebrew School teacher. Now, at Hunters Run, she facilitates and runs the Yiddish and Jewish Culture Club which has weekly meetings and lists more than 100 members. We were surprised and fascinated by Bobbi’s revelation that her dad, A. Albert Eichler, a prominent New Jersey attorney, had been a gun runner

in the days of Israel’s War of Independence. It came as a shock to her as well when she first found an empty ammunition box in her basement as a teenager. Her dad told her he and other community members hid guns under the bimah (enclosed area under the altar) at their synagogue in Irvington, New Jersey.Guns were moved to Palestine and the Haganah, the underground military organization, in the late 1940’s, as part of a large clandestine arms-purchasing and smuggling network. Many of the synagogues collected guns. All worked under the radar—weapons mailed in crates marked as farm machinery, cargo ships filled with arsenals of weapons including tanks, marked as sugar. Businesses, metal scrap dealers, were involved and even the Jewish mafia may have lent a hand. Of course, these efforts helped in their way to bring about the founding of Israel and boost its military strength in the War of Independence. “I found an empty box and got an education,” Bobbi said.We didn’t want the conversation to end so we sat there and talked much longer than usual.Bobbi later exclaimed, “This was the best lunch conversation I’ve ever had!”Muriel said,” It was an enjoyable and meaningful lunch.”Malya added, “It was a wonderful conversation and it was great meeting and talking to these women.”Judie, “And the icing on the cake! We came in second!”

HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A GREAT SUMMER and practicing hard. Just remember, we have a reputation to keep up for next year’s league season. So, no slacking off!Summer tennis pool has started. Play is on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for both men and women at 9:00 AM. It is hot out there, so keep hydrated. If you get too hot, put one of the iced towels around your neck.Lots of work is being done on the courts. We are putting a high fence on the pickleball courts where the netting is now, which should keep the balls in and be a little safer for the players. All the tennis courts are getting resurfaced and 11 of them are getting re-lined and fence posts are getting painted. We have worked on the calendar for next year and made a few adjustments to it, so as soon as it is approved, will get all the dates out to you.Have a safe summer and stay healthy.

BIDDING BOXES LAWSWe sometimes feel that new duplicate players are intimidated using Bidding Boxes. The ACBL has strict laws on their use. We thought it may be helpful to discuss these laws. The best advice is never touch the box until you have decided on your bid. If you play with the bidding card it gives unauthorized information. The director may be called by your opponent.

When Is a Call Deemed to be Made? A call is deemed to be made when the bidding card is removed from the bidding box with apparent intent (it may be held face up, touching or nearly touching the table or maintained in such a position to indicate that it has been played.) Players should decide which call they are going to make before touching any bidding card. To hesitate between choices is UNAUTHORIZED INFORMATION to Partner.

Correction of Call - A call may be changed without penalty ONLY if it is inadvertent, i.e., a mechanical error, not a change of mind. You can correct it if your partner has not bid even if the left-hand opponent has bid. You can say stop, wait, I made an error and call the director. The player must change or attempt to change the inadvertent call without pause for thought from the moment that he REALIZES he has made the wrong call. If LHO made a call before the change was allowed, he may withdraw that choice and replace it with another without penalty.

At the end of the auction the bidding cards should remain in place until the opening lead has been made face down and all explanations have been obtained, after which they should be returned to their boxes. Lynn Berg suggests that when the auction is complete, it is a good idea for someone at the table to state the final contract, “3 in the East,” for example.

See Ya at the Bridge Table.

The rage in all the movie theaters lately revolves around superheroes. Whether it is a single superhero like Superman or a group of them like the Avengers, kids and adults alike would love to have their super powers. Of course, with that super power comes vulnerability. Even Superman’s strength is stripped away by kryptonite. My personal favorite hero is Batman. Now, Batman has no powers. Can’t fly. Doesn’t leap buildings in a single bound. Isn’t invulnerable. As a matter of fact, in many of the conflicts he faces, he comes out battered and bruised. But he always prevails to take on the next fight. He wasn’t born that way; he had to train over a period of time, knowing he had obstacles ahead of him. What about you? I’m not getting at who your favorite fictional super hero is…I’m talking about any weaknesses you have and what you are doing to overcome them. What motivates you or what holds you back? If superheroes have weaknesses, then we surely have them too. If you are not willing to take the time to get bigger, better or stronger, then you aren’t going to improve. The place you can become stronger and more agile is here in the Fitness Center. The time is now! What are you possibly waiting for? You can either overcome your obstacles or be overcome by them.Think of Adam West walking up the walls. Seems impossible? Just change your perspective. "To the Bat-gym, Robin." Sorry, couldn’t help it. Results start when you do.

    Congratulations to Irwin Lebow!

On May 9, 2019, Palm Beach County Commissioner Robert S. Weinroth (District 4) toured Hunters Run. He had previously lived in a country club community, but was extremely impressed with what Hunters Run had to offer its members. The purpose of inviting him and other elected officials to our home is so that when they vote on the various proposals that are presented to them, they realize that close to 3,000 members live here and what they do and say impacts that many people.

Members of this Committee try to attend each Boynton Beach City Council meeting. We stay in close contact with our Mayor Steven Grant and Justin Katz, our district councilman. We have been advised that work has begun on the construction of the WAWA gas and convenience

Irwin’s diary of his 93 missions as a fighter pilot in the European Theater in World War II has just been published. Available on Amazon, the book is called A PILOT’S STORY. Irwin’s diary is included in the Library of Congress Veteran’s History Project archives and this book contains key selections written as a 22-year-old, starting from his enlistment in the Army Air Corps to the many memories and experiences flying the P47 Thunderbolt over Italy, France and Germany from July 1944 to the end of the war in Europe on May 8th, 1945. Irwin and Judy, his wife of 76 years, are long time members of Hunters Run and he is still playing tennis three times a week!

NOTE: Irwin has some of the books, so if anyone here wants to buy a copy directly from him, he will personally sign it.

Many members have complained about the timing of the traffic light at the corner of Congress Avenue and the extension of Summit Drive. That light is controlled by the County and not the City of Boynton Beach. We have reached out to the appropriate authorities and requested that the timing of this light be reviewed

Not only do the actions of the City and County affect us, but what our State legislators do makes an impact on Hunter Run. As a result, we stay in touch with both Florida State Senator Lori Berman and Florida State Representative Emily Slosberg.

    DAVID AND JODY RICKEL

Fond memories of vacations at Jody’s parents’ home in Hunters Run, along with a large dose of encouragement from their children, brought David and Jody to their new home in Southport. Jody’s parents were original owners and so the family spent a good deal of time enjoying the facilities here over the years. In fact, the memories were so positive that Jody’s brother, Gary Snyder, and his wife, Elaine, are also owners at Hunters Run. Now that’s family tradition! Jody and David will be dividing their time with their other home in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, where Jody grew up. She attended Cheltenham High School and Temple University, receiving a degree in elementary education. David grew up close by in Philadelphia, attended Roxborough High School and Temple University, having led the way for Jody. The two met at Fairview Day Camp when they were 15 and 16 and, at such a tender age, their fate was sealed. They also have a condo at the shore in Ventnor, New Jersey, so there’s always lots of packing and unpacking in the Rickel household.

Here’s another reason David is excited about his ownership in Hunters Run---he holds the honor of a hole-in-one on the 17th hole of the old North Course in 2007. So expect to see him going for number two! He also enjoys boating and fishing. Jody will be spending time in the card room playing mahjong and canasta and look for her on the pickleball courts as well.

STEVE GREENE AND ELIZABETH (LIZ) SANTANDER

Never Say Never! This is what Liz reminds herself as she reminisces about the purchase of their new home in Westgate. For years she had refused Steve’s suggestion to acquire a home in Florida so they could join their many friends already enjoying the Florida lifestyle. Steve couldn’t even commit to

a weekend getaway at their vacation home in the Hudson Valley, so how was he ever going to make the trip to Florida? Fast forward to a much needed vacation that brought them to Hunters Run. Liz relays her first impression of driving into the club and seeing the beautiful manicured grounds and lush palm trees—she’s a sucker for palm trees. She began to rethink her original aversion. The deal was sealed when Mike and Chris Domenici and Sam and Rosemarie Conka, longtime friends from their days playing paddleball in New Rochelle, showed them the club and the many beautiful new facilities.

Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents from Spain, Liz and her family soon relocated back to Spain as her parents yearned to return to their home country. It was there that she attended boarding school and college before returning to the States to rejoin her parents who had moved back for better opportunities. Steve, living a more conventional life, grew up in the Bronx and went to Hunter College, where his studies served as a stepping stone to the life of a serial entrepreneur. Liz and Steve connected soon after her decision to pursue a career as an interior designer. Needing some additional income to better provide for her growing son and wanting to exercise her newly acquired talents, she sought work in Steve’s store, where he sold motorized window treatments. Several years elapsed and eventually they combined their talents and their lives.

    N E W M E M B E R P R O F I L E SBy DeirDre Kline

The two lived in Chappaqua, New York, while raising their son and then moved to Yonkers, New York, a few years ago after he moved out to raise his own family. Both are eager to learn to play golf.

    JAY AND ROZ WEISS

Roz and Jay came to Hunters Run after renting in the area for a couple of years. Prior to Florida, Aruba was their vacation destination, a tradition that began 50 years ago on their honeymoon, when hardly a soul knew of the island and only one hotel appeared on the shoreline. Many vacations with the family over that time brought much joy but, as life evolved, it seemed like the right time to explore new vistas. So, they sold their time shares and set South Florida as their next stop.

Jay and Roz are avid travelers, having visited South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia… and the list goes on. They are looking forward to their upcoming river cruise to Normandy and other parts of France. They both also enjoy all the cultural arts, ballet, theater, opera and museums. Roz hails from Brooklyn, attended Wingate High School and Brooklyn College. Jay grew up in the Bronx and attended Evander Childs High School. Summers for Roz were spent at the beach in Rockaway, where you can say she was a bit of a beach bum as she truly loved her time spent at the ocean. She was known then as Roz Stern. The couple spend summers at their home in East Northport, Long Island, where Roz still keeps her hand in real estate. Jay is happily retired from the men’s textile industry.

You will see them next season at their home in Stratford. Jay will be golfing and playing poker while Roz is in the card room enjoying canasta and mahjong.

    JUDY STEIN AND MARK SCHLESINGER

Mark, the “party animal” in the family, yearned for more social activities and had heard that Hunters Run just might fit the bill. Judy was not convinced, as she was quite content with her lifestyle and circle of friends at Valencia Isles. A day trip with a broker, the new facilities and our packed social calendar led to a showing in Essex. Much to Judy’s surprise and Mark’s delight, the very first home they saw convinced them to pack their bags.

You might say that making quick decisions is one of Mark’s strengths, as it played a prominent role in his fortuitous online encounter with Judy. Perusing a dating site, Mark saw a photo of an attractive woman holding a wine glass. A former Naval Officer, he enjoyed his libations and wanted someone who shared his interest. So he contacted the yet unknown woman and so it began.

Originally from Belle Harbor, New York, Judy (nee Raffman) attended Far Rockaway High School, later receiving her degree in elementary education from Cortland Teachers College and ultimately becoming an elementary school teacher. Growing up on the beaches of Far Rockaway fostered a love of swimming which still endures. Mark went the route of a camper at Camp Anawana in Monticello, New York. Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx was where he spent his teens followed by NYU, earning his degree in engineering. This led the way to a very successful 50+-year career in the building industry. He is currently responsible for turnkey operations of large construction projects at Feldman Lumber. The two have many hobbies, travel widely and enjoy volunteering. Woodmere, Long Island, is where these snowbirds spend summers.
