Magazine Cover Analysis
Main target audience is pre teen girls,
Using a colour scheme of pinks and
purples as stereotypically young girls like
these colours.
A lot of readers of this magazine watch X
Factor, interest people into buying this
magazine by having an X factor star on
the front cover, being the largest thing on
the page to get the reader’s attention
Many of the readers probably have
Facebook and Twitter and so frequently
use language such as “OMG”. They have
put this on the cover so the magazine can
relate to the reader. Also it makes it see
more exciting and dramatic and so more
people would want to buy the magazine
to see embarrassing photos of Rihanna.
Persuasive text “MUST” gives a
sense of urgency and the use of
italics puts emphasis on it directing it
straight to the customer that they
need to know about this.
As the target audience is pre teen girls,
they are interested in “fit lads” such as
One Direction or Justin Beiber, so putting
them on the front cover will persuade
customers to purchase this magazine.

For adult magazines, the female cover star would
usually be wearing minimal clothes as she is
objectified due to the target audience being mainly
males. In contrast to this the target audience is young
girls and so we are focusing more on her clothes, hair
and makeup than on her body.
Images of the celebrities, they are all smiling: links to that target audience as
because it is aimed at younger readers the tone of the magazine is more
positive and light hearted, this would be different to an older aged magazine
where they would feature more serious faced celebrities.
Alliteration: catchy and memorable phrase
which would interest the reader
Young audience, most likely get pocket
money from parents and so it would
appeal to them that they could be a “style
sensation” for just £1.
Stating the names of celebrities and “&
more” at the end grabs the reader’s
attention and makes them want to read
the magazine as they want to find out
about the other celebrities in the
magazine.
As the readers are typically around the
age of puberty they would start having
experiences with the opposite gender,
and so they would be interested into
knowing if they could “kiss with
confidence”.
There is not a set layout to the cover and
just has different subheadings and topics
all over the page. This makes it seem
more exciting and dynamic as if the
magazine is filled with interesting articles,
thus persuading the customer in
purchasing the magazine.
Use of rhetorical question engages the
reader on a personal level so they feel
involved in the magazine, and drawing
them into the article.
Cover model is wearing minimal
clothes. This is because the
primary audience of this magazine
is early 20 year old males and so
Lady Gaga has been objectified to
appeal to them. This would grab
their attention and would also
persuade them to buy it.
Colour scheme of black, white and
red as the colour of the banner is
red so it links to the banner. This
makes it familiar to the reader as
the colour scheme is consistently
the same.
“100” and “shocking” stand out to
the reader by being in bold and
red. This grabs their attention and
persuades them to buy the
magazine as they want to find out
about the 100 most shocking
moments in music.

Her body is covering up a part of
her name so you cannot read the
whole thing, this doesn’t matter as
because she is so famous and well
know people immediately know
who she is and so she doesn’t
need her name behind her.
Covering up a bit of the banner at the top,
showing that Lady Gaga is the centre of
attention.
Costume: The gloves she is wearing are very much like claws, creating the impression of her being
dangerous and powerful which is the opposite to how a typical female would like to be presented. The
theme of power links to the colour of her clothes, as black creates connotations of power and evil and
even death. What she is wearing and the colour of the clothing combining with her body language and
eye contact makes her out to be a temptress, enticing the reader into reading about her.
Madonna is a big name in the
music industry and is known by
everyone. The phrase “Move over
Madonna” tells the reader that
Lady Gaga is a huge star and will
be influential towards the music
world.
Simple organised layout, helps the
reader to easily navigate their way
around the front cover. This differs
from a magazine aimed at a
younger target audience, for
example Top of the Pops where the
layout is very disorganised to make
it look exciting and dynamic.
The verb “RISEN!” is in capitals
and has an exclamation mark to
represent the definition of the word,
as well as stating how Lady Gaga
is becoming a domineering figure in
the music industry. As the most popular indie
magazine, readers would not listen
to and would most likely dislike
Jedward, and so the readers would
relate and agree with the
magazine, identifying it on a
personal level.
