DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

LARA BERNDES

Page 2: Magazine codes and connections for double page spread

Image- this image acts as the main focus point of the double page spread. She looks rather upset and serious. She is wearing black which reinforces this serious feeling which links the masthead ‘wounds’.

Dropped cap- this indicates the start of the text. It is a very popular technique in double page spreads. It makes the double page spread seem more aesthetically pleasing to the eye

Headline- this acts as the title of the text. Allows the audience to gain insight about what the main text is about. ‘lykkings her wounds’, suggesting the mag is using her last name and turning it into a language technique

Columns- Neat columns for the text – small font, house style font that the brand will repeatedly use throughout the magazine. Allows the reader to read the text at ease without confusion

Pull out quote- A quote from the article that breaks up the text and leads the reader through the article. This technique makes the double spread seem more interesting

First stand/grey box- Leading you into the article, information related to what it’s all about. Allows the reader to have more interesting background information

Page number-I have noticed that this double page spread does not include a page number may cause confusion to the readers as they may not be able to find the page that this info on the double page spread correlates to

Negative space-negative space is the space that essentially blank and that is not used by the main focus point. In this example the negative space is dark which correlates well with the subjects facial expression and the overall message of the double page spread

This particular pull out quote is deep and meaningful talking about a vision yet we should not lose ourselfs

Intertexual reference- this grey box refers to other articles on other pages throughout the magazine. It will also include their page number so the reader can find the article easily

Pull out quote-this pull out quote is an excellent example of how articles choose interesting statements the subject has made and turned it into a quote to grab the readers attention. A very popular technique to make the reader flick through the magazine and buy it.

Headline-acts as the title of the text. The fact that this particular double spread uses the word ‘gospel’ then refers to famous artist Nicki Minaj suggests that Nicki is almost God like

Colour scheme-the colours chosen in this double page spread are considered very feminine, the dominant colour being pink (using different shades of pink too). This pink theme is also reinforced by Nickis lip colour. This also suggests this magazine is targeted at girls/women

Dropped cap-this dropped cap indicates the start of the text. It makes the long text seem more appealing to read and the fact the dropped cap and numbers are also in pink reinforces this feminine theme

Columns-neat columns for the text – small font, house style font that the brand will repeatedly use throughout the magazine. Allows the reader to read the text at ease without confusion

Negative space-in this double page spread there is a of ‘negative space’ which also reinforces this feminine theme with the background colour being light pink. The amount of negative space allows our attention to focus on the main subject which is the purpose so therefore meaning it is effective

Main focus point-in this particular two page spread the subject being nicki minaj acts as the main focus point. Her costume is very different and unique which could represent her very out there personality, which links with extravagant jewelry. The fact her ring says ‘icon’ suggests nicki is publishing her fame for publicity. Her make up is quite excessive with her bright pink lipstick sticking to the feminine theme

Intertextual reference-this particular double page spread does not contain a section of intertextual reference. This does not necessarily mean it is not of a excellent standard as this spread is rather bare as it is focusing our attention on this feminine type theme

Sub headings-sub headings are not particular popular in double page spreads in comparison to cover pages. However they either give a brief introduction to the rest of the text or highlight a key point throughout the text

Main focus point-the main focus point in this double page spread is the subject, being Beyoncé. She is wearing minimal make up compared to most artists nowadays representing her natural beauty. It is a close up head shot with direct eye contact. Her face looks determined and ready yet calm at the same time. This connotes with the main headline ‘fiercely creative’, Beyoncé is looking fierce and ready

Headline-the headline on this double page spread is particularly clever as it links to the image. Beyoncé looks like a strong independent women (the image Beyoncé always tries to portray) and this links to headline ‘fiercely’. Beyonces unique hood like feature is very different and urban which also links back to the headline ‘creative’

Columns- neat columns for the text – small font, house style font that the brand will repeatedly use throughout the magazine. Allows the reader to read the text at ease without confusion

Image-image is very striking and eye catching. This reinfo9rces the magazines advertisement as the reader will remember this picture and when flicking through is more likely to buy
