COMPLETE CUSTOMIZATION

PAGE BUILDING

Customization can be done in an instant with features that allow you

to make your device your own with ease. These features include:

• The User Setup Wizard, which will create a user prole that

will serve as a personalized communication environment

for the primary software user. It asks the user for personal

information (name, address, family names, hobbies, etc.) that

will be integrated into the existing or new pages. Series 5

Software will also pose a series of questions about the user’scommunication needs, and will recommend sets of existing

InterAACt pages based on the responses.

• Drag-and-Drop editing to allow users to select images,

sounds and video from a computer, external drive or the

internet and assign them to pages or buttons.

• Preprogrammed InterAACt pages that exist so new pages

only need to be created if the user chooses to create them.

• Both DynaSyms and PCS symbol sets, preloaded on

every device.

• The Mayer-Johnson Boardmaker Bridge®, which allows

you to import Boardmaker pages you have created into your device.

• Content from the DynaVox 3100, MiniMo, MightyMo, MT4,

DV4 and M3 devices can be imported into the Maestro using

the User Setup Wizard.

• Support multiple users on the same device, and allow each

of those users to customize the device to suit their personality

and communication needs by providing:

 – Slot ller options for the My Friends, My Medical Needs

and My Activities slot concepts for faster communicationin social or personal care situations

 – Sample images of the pages that are available in the

user’s chosen page set, allowing them to preview what

is being created so that they can apply changes before

a new user is created

 – Automatic button grid settings (used for slot llers) and

the Page Editor so that these settings match the page

layout of the user’s choice

• The Ask Yes or No Before Proceeding option can be used

to conrm that a user wants to continue with the remaining

behaviors.

All of these settings can be easily changed at any time.

There are approximately 25,000 pre-made pages in the Maestro.

The customization of these pages and the creation of new pages is

simple and can be done on the device itself or on a computer with

the free page sharing software that ships with each device. Novel

pages can be created from scratch and personalized based on the

user’s age, ability and personality. Page-building methods range from

introductory to advanced, giving each user full control over pagecontent, layout and design. Customization options include:

Modify Button

The Modify button, located in the title bar, enables users to

immediately customize any property of a given page. It displays a

menu of tools specic to the elements that are being edited, and

works with onscreen keyboards. With the Modify button, a user can

change and customize:

• Button labels, symbols or colors

• The background color and/or image on a page

• The color of the Message Window

Drag-and-Drop

The Drag-and-Drop feature can be used to incorporate text les,

sounds, pictures and videos into pages. With the Drag and Drop

feature a user can:

• Change the background of a page by dragging an image

of his/her choice from an Internet search or other source,

and dropping it onto an open page

• Program a button to play a sound or video le by simply

dragging the le onto the button

• Create a custom symbol set by dragging a folder of pictures

into the Symbol Browser menu

Software Tools for Page-Editing

• The Page Wizard enables users to create a new page by

answering a series of questions about the desired layout,

content and overall design of the page

• The Page Editor features a complete graphical layout and

editing environment that provides the user with full control

over page design

Fill from Searches

A user can create any number of empty buttons on a page, and

later ll them with symbols and text found though a custom search

of a variety of topics in the Series 5 Software dictionary.

 Vocabulary Clipboard

Users can populate buttons with selected words and phrases from

a variety of sources for quick inclusion on a page. Sources include:

• Word processing documents

• Web pages

• Series 5 Software

• Dictionary

Symbols

DynaSyms, PCS and other symbol sets can be copied into a

custom symbol set and modied to suit the user’s needs and

desired page layout.

Sounds and Videos

Users can program buttons to play sound and video les in moments.

Tab Controls

Designed to provide immediate access to more vocabulary than is

normally available on a page, tab controls can contain up to six

panes. They allow users to place buttons for varying topics on a

single page, reducing the amount of navigation required to locate

and use the desired vocabulary.

Hiding Buttons

Hiding buttons enables communication partners to design more

advanced buttons that the user can “grow into” as literacy levels

develop. Buttons can be hidden initially, but exposed later when theuser has reached certain educational goals or milestones.

Freeform Buttons and Active Areas

A user can create custom-shaped buttons and active areas, drawn

to any desired size or shape.

Importing Content

(Intellitools, Boardmaker and DynaVox Software)

Content created using the DynaVox 3100, MiniMo, MightyMo,

MT4, DV4, and M3 platforms, along with content from the

Boardmaker Software Family (including Speaking Dynamically Pro)

and the Intellitools Classroom Suite, can be easily imported into the

Series 5 Software.

RATE ENHANCEMENT

A variety of rate enhancement features help users communicate more

efciently. These features reduce the number of selections needed to

create a message or perform a given task:

Dictionary

With the concept-based dictionary, which includes over 35,000

words, names and phrases, the user can easily add custom

vocabulary, names and common phrases to their dictionary for

easy access.

Dynamic Pages

The InterAACt page sets include pages that provide dynamic

vocabulary options. These pages are designed to encourage

natural, real-time communication by minimizing the required

navigation for gathering the desired vocabulary. These pages

include “Quickre” phrases that can be instantly adapted to casualor formal situations, as well as groups of phrases that can shift from

past to present or future tense using a single button.

Prediction

Prediction features support the natural, efcient composition and

communication of messages by reducing the amount of navigationnecessary to compose a message. A number of prediction options

are available to aid users in prediction customization. Three types

of prediction are available:

• As the keyboard is used to create a message,–word–

prediction will attempt to anticipate the word the user is

typing, presenting options for quick selection. Words can be

predicted with or without symbols.

•– Character–prediction attempts to predict the next

character most likely to be used when a user is spelling out a

word. Character prediction is particularly useful to scanning

users.YK

• With phrase–prediction, your device will provide options

for entire phrases that match any part of the current message,

not just phrases from the beginning of a sentence. Predicted

phrases come from users’ “My Phrases” collection, and may

be restricted by concept.

 Abbreviation Expansion

Abbreviation expansion allows users to dene specic abbreviations

for long words and phrases. With the abbreviation expansion

feature, users can send messages that are frequently composed

and shared (e.g. greetings, introductions and questions, etc.) to theMessage Window with just a few selections.

My Phrases

The My Phrases menu allows the user to dene specic phrases for

use in a variety of situations (greetings, quick questions, changing

the subject, etc). Phrases can be sent to the Message Window as

part of a longer message, or can be spoken directly as stand-alone

messages. They can also be sorted by concept and accessed

from the title bar at any time so that they are always immediately

available.

Quickres

Quickres are short conversation interjections (e.g. “I know”, “waita second,” etc.) that are available for use in any setting.

Slots

Slots are a rate enhancement feature that allow for message

construction using common phrases (e.g., “For breakfast I want…”)

that are paired with a placeholder (the slot) and can be lled with

another phrase or a single word.

Slots provide users with easy access to words associated with a

particular concept. Users can select a slot and choose to replace the

word that is currently lling the slot with another word from the same

concept. This offers users access to a plentiful source of vocabulary,

while eliminating the need to navigate to locate it.

By selecting the slots and changing the ller text, phrases can

quickly and easily be changed to suit the given context of the

interaction. Slots suitable in different contexts include:

•– Speak–Random–Text–Using–Slotscan make

conversation more spontaneous and engaging. For example,

you can program a Slot with the “best friends” concept, and

call the button “Greet Marilyn”. When this button is selected,

it will use the name “Marilyn” in a randomly chosen phrase

from the best friends concept list, such as, “Hey, Marilyn,

what’s up?”; “Marilyn, how’s it going?”; “Hey, Marilyn, how

are you?”, etc.

•– Nested–Slots allow users to include a slot within another

slot. For example, a user may compose the text, “I want meal

for lunch”, where “meal” is a slot. The ller options for meal

could include, “soup“, “salad” and “sandwich”, all of which

are slots. If, for example, “sandwich” is selected by the user,

options such as “ham”, “turkey” or “peanut butter and jelly”

could be selected llers.

•– Universal–Access–to–Slots is an accessible feature using

any selection method, including switch access, joystick and

Morse Code.•– Slot–Filler–Keyguard–Alignment–allows users to optimize

the Slot Filler menu to match the desired page layout or

keyguard conguration.

•– Slots–Tab–Pane enables you to select the symbol placement

and button size settings for the Select Slot Filler menu.

•– Concept–Slot–Fillers simplify the procedure for modifying

the ller (word or phrase) options associated with a slot.

Users can add or remove llers, change the order in which

the ller options appear, change the ller text or change the

symbol associated with a slot ller.

•–  Active–Labels enable you to embed an active label in aslot. When in use, the slot will display and speak the current

value for the active label.

INTERAACT

InterAACt is a language framework that supports functional

communication and language and literacy development. Based on

the concept that language and literacy should be supported by a

solid framework, structure, vocabulary and appropriate symbol set,

InterAACt is specic to three factors:

• Communicator’s age

• Communication ability

• Context of the interaction

The InterAACt framework is based on a visual spectrum of

communicators that are classied within different age groups.

For each age group, the spectrum includes Functional (Emergent),

Situational (Context-Dependent) and Independent (Creative

communicators. Each area of the InterAACt framework relates to a

focus on user needs, and is specic to that particular age group and

communication level. Pre-programmed InterAACt pages are included

on every Maestro.
