First Reading — Hannah gives her son Samuel back to the LORD, leaving him in the temple at Shiloh: “As long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD” (1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28) or Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14. Psalm — Blessed are they who dwell in your house, O Lord (Psalm 84) or Psalm 128. Second Reading — We are children of God when we believe in the name of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us (1 Jn 3:1-2, 21-24) or Colossians 3:12-21 [12-17]. Gospel — Joseph and Mary find the lost Jesus in the temple in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking questions (Luke 2:41-52).

T oday we continue our Christmas celebration with the Feast of the Holy Family. The feast of the Holy Family makes sense now because it continues the focus’ on Jesus, Mary and Joseph. As I say every year, I believe this feast is

also celebrated now because for most of us the holidays are a time of family celebrations. These celebrations often are a mix of wonderful blessings and stress all rolled up in one. Time together with family and friends remind us of the things we love in them as well as the things that annoy or anger us. Families are messy. And that includes the Holy Family, as well as our own. Yet the Church sees family as the first church, the place where each of us are introduced to God. At its best, the family is where we learn caring, sharing, and forgiveness. It is also the place we feel secure and loved. Families ground us. They give us a history and a place to launch the future. But sometimes families fall short of our hopes and expectations and can even cause us pain and sorrow. The Holy family reminds us that our individual families are rolled up in the Holy family. What might be lacking in our own families we can find in Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Today we celebrate our Holy Families. A thank you to everyone who helped decorate the church for our Christmas celebration. Joanne begins work early on preparations and makes sure that flower

and greens are ordered. Thanks to all of you who gave to the flower collection. This year besides the flowers we also bought a few new Christmas trees. Thanks to the liturgy team and parishioners who help make our environment so festive and give their time each holiday. Thanks also to all the choirs and musicians who make all of our celebrations a time of joy and thanksgiving. This week we will also celebrate the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. This feast falls on January 1st and reminds us of our Blessed Mothers role in God’s plan of salvation. Mary is the first disciple and her “yes” to God is an example for all of us. We will have a Mass on New Years Eve at 5:00 PM and a 9:00 AM celebration on New Years Day. Please join us for one of these celebrations as we ring in the New Year and like Mary recommit ourselves this year to be Disciples of Christ. Next Sunday, January 3rd as we celebrate the Epiphany, we invite you to join us for the St. Kieran Coffee Shop. We will begin the New Year with a Latin twist. The hours will be extended so everyone can enjoy a simple brunch with some of your Latino favorite dishes. Join us as we start the new year right. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who have financially supported the parish over the past year. Your gifts and generosity keep the parish strong and are a sign of your living faith in Jesus Christ. Thank You.

Dear Friends, Merry Christmas! It has been another amazing year at St. Kieran, thanks to all of you. From where I sit, I see Jesus at work, through all of you, in our parish and our community, and it is a wonderful view. Your generous response to the monthly Food Drive, the annual Giving Tree, the R.E. Birthday Bag project, and the Pet Supply Drive, truly makes a difference to people. Please know that the recipients of your loving generosity are ever grateful, and they keep you in their prayers, as you have them in yours. May God bless you. I have one more devotion to share with you this season, from “A Thrill of Hope!” by Janet Schaeffler, O.P. It touched my heart because of my penchant for worry, and I hope it touches yours as well.

“The author John Jay Chapman remarked: ‘People get so in the habit of worry that if you save them from drowning and put them on a bank to dry in the sun with hot chocolate and muffins they wonder whether they are catching cold.’ “The admonition to not be afraid, to not worry, is the most frequent caution in Scripture. In the Advent and Christmas readings alone, it is mentioned four times—to Mary, Zechariah, Joseph, and in [the Christmas Day] reading, to the shepherds. “No one is afraid of a newborn child. Most people want to take a newborn into their arms. God has chosen to come to us as a newborn child so that we would approach God without fear. There is nothing to fear because God, in becoming one of us, has made a home for us. “The mystery of Emmanuel (God with Us) is God’s surprising everyday presence with us, totally and constantly, amid our fears and joys, in ordinary ways and in surprising ways. “DAILY PRACTICE: During these twelve days of Christmas, what one fear can you let go of? How might you reach out to someone who is afraid of their life circumstances? “CHRISTMAS PRAYER: God who dissolves all fears, thank you for providing a safe home. In these Christmas days, empower me to trust in your protection—and share that shelter with others.”

Begin the new year celebrating the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ with a Latin flavor. Join us at our next Coffee Shop where we will have the common Latino pastries, including the traditional "Rosca del Dia de Reyes".

To continue with the celebration, we will extend our Coffee Shop hours. During our regulars hours from 8:30 to 11:30 AM we will be serving Brazilian, Puerto Rican, and Mexican coffee. From 12 to 1:30 PM, in addition to our regular and Latino pastries, we will be adding a limited variety of Latino appetizers. Come gather and enjoy us for some coffee, sweets, and fellowship as we honor the coming of the three kings to the infant Jesus Christ.
