About the ChamberEstablished in 1959, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce is the largestnon-profit organization in Madison County. It is an organization that is by and for itsmembers, meaning that each of its 300+ member businesses and their employees havethe empowerment to shape the organization and make a difference in Madison County.

Madison County HistoryOn February 16, 1810, the Ohio government authorized thecreation of Madison County. The county was named in honor ofJames Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Thecounty began to flourish during the 1830s, with the completionof the National Road through Ohio.

The Madison County Historical Society, located at 260 E.High Street in London, has preserved or recreated manyMadison County landmarks for display:

Jonathan Alder Cabin, c. 1806Jonathan Alder was born in 1773 in Virginia. He was thefirst white settler in Madison County. In 1806, he marriedMary Blont, and they had 12 children together. He diedin 1848.

Florence Switch Railroad Station, c. 1840This station was established as a weight station around1853 due to its halfway location between London andSouth Charleston, Ohio.

CabooseThe caboose was a gift to the Society from the BordenChemical Company.

The Elizabeth Kitchen House, c. 1824One of the early log homes built in London, the housewas moved to the museum grounds in 1994 and wasopened to the public in September 1996.

FarmMachinery Display BarnOn display are many examples of farm implements that havebeen utilized throughout the history of Madison County.

National RoadThe National Road was America’s firstfederally funded highway. Beginningin Baltimore, Maryland, and crossingsix states, the National Road travelsover 700 miles total, including15 miles in Madison County andthrough 10 other counties in Ohio.The road provides a rich history thatincludes historic landmarks, forestedmountains, industrial towns and modern cities, richfarmland and pastures, on its way to the MississippiRiver and the Eads Bridge at East St. Louis, Illinois. TheRoad entered Ohio from the east in 1825. The NationalRoad immediately attracted travelers and commerceand opened Ohio and much of the old Northwest Ter-ritory to settlements and access to Ohio products. The

National Road has been designated as an All-AmericanRoad and a National Scenic Byway. Madison County’sportion has been recognized with an interpretivemarker that can be seen at the Red Brick Tavern inLafayette, just north of London.

Natural Resources: Lakes and Parks�• Cowling ParkCowling Park is located on North Main Street inLondon and offers a family atmosphere with playgroundequipment, picnic shelter facilities and open green spacefor afternoon activities. • Deer Creek Lake & State ParkDeer Creek Lake is a manmade lake and its deepest pointis 40 feet near the dam. The US Army Corps of Engineersbuilt the dam for flood control. Construction began in1965 and it was completed in 1968. Today, there are morethan 1,290 acres of water behind the dam. The Deer CreekLake feeds into the Scioto River, which is more than 231miles in length. The river is mainly used for recreation anddrinking water.

Located in the heart of Ohio's agricultural country, DeerCreek State Park is central Ohio's vacation showplace. Acollage of meadows and woodlands surround the scenicreservoir. • London State Fish HatcheryThe London State Fish Hatchery is located onmore than 80acres in western Madison County, just west of London. Thefacility was built in 1896 by the Ohio Fish Commission. Thehatchery has 34 ponds containing almost 10-water acres.The facility also has one large outdoor raceway and nineindoor rearing troughs. Water is supplied by several wells,which can deliver 2,000 gallons per minute. This cold-water supply and spring-fed ponds allow the hatchery toraise muskellunge, rainbow trout and brown trout. Thehatchery is involved in fish production year round,maintaining its own brown trout and rainbow troutbreeding adults and is the main production facility forbrown trout. Muskellunge production starts in the spring,while trout production starts in the fall. London State FishHatchery also maintains several species of fish for displaysat the state fair, county fairs, and sports shows. The visiting
