Costa Rica, Norway, Belize, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Holland and Vietnam are some of the happiest nations on earth. While a leading nation in arts and sciences, France is not a happy place. Its citizens are constant complainers. Not surprisingly, Syria and Afghanistan along with the Democratic Republic of Congo are the saddest countries. It is with great pleasure that I share an open secret with you. Healers of the medical sciences will not cease in their quest for a healthier and happier society. Over the ages the secular medical sciences have adopted practices from ancient religions such as male circumcision from Judaic tradition. When an advantage of a certain practice to humanity is proven, it is prudent to study it further. Meditation has made

successful inroads in the secular medical world and is a subject of worthwhile interest. The overall health of society has a lot to do with the mental state of its members. We New Yorkers do not live in Park City, UT. Our city is a built, overbuilt and constantly rebuilt super city. Early morning the big rigs start rolling into the boroughs. Ten, twelve, sixteen wheelers and above generate constant noise and vibration. Ambulances and fire engines add their music to the mix. There is constant underground transport tremor. New York City had miles of beach but our aggressive real estate developers haven’t left much of it untouched. Community Medicine teaches us there is a minimum number of trees which should be recycling air per person. That number can be off in many metropolitan areas of the world. Hospital. This new research data endorses the positive effects of meditative practice on the human mind.

MeDitatiOn Has tHree Parts:1. Focused Attention2. Mindfulness3. Compassion

FOcuseD attentiOn:This process teaches to focus all attention at a single thing. The process is begun by stretching followed by controlled breathing which lowers the heart rate. Early mornings are the best time as there is little distraction. This improves attention and focus, hence results. In the beginning the process can be frustrating, which is a positive

What would be the value to your life of such an ability?

Harvard and Emory University scientists have researched the process of meditation and its effect upon the human brain. Emory’s research data has been carried further with fMRI studies done by Harvard Medical faculty at the Massachusetts General

For this let us be grateful to them. The point being that our city can over stimulate our senses and add to life’s stressors. Big city stress phenomena started in London as a result of the industrial revolution. William Blake, one of my favorite poets of the romantic era wrote in his poem “London”:

I wander thro’ each chart’d street

Near where the charter’d Thames does flow

And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of

woe.

Notice how many happy people are walking to work with a coffee? I think it is a worthwhile suggestion for all of us to pay some attention to Meditation techniques. Meditation is an ancient practice with Asian roots.

Buddhist monks are the leading exponents of the art. These practitioners of meditation have given the world the martial arts. This alone should be enough to take those timid monks

A gift of nature: SalmonA natural Salmon Run, such as still occurs in Aslaska is a bountiful gift of nature that is truly awesome. The U.S., Canada, Scandinavia, Scotland, England and Germany are the beneciaries of salmon spawning rivers. It must be noted that these regions of the world contribute greatly to humanity and have a huge positive impact on the globe. Salmon is a supreme food for the mind and the body. It is a folly of immeasurable magnitude not to avail oneself of fresh wild caught sh, especially, salmon.

sign. By Focusing on breathing, the frustration dissipates into success. An overall feeling of well-being and calm engulfs the meditator.

MinDFulness: This eastern concept is the step which follows focused attention. Mindfulness applies to all parts of our life. It raises individual and collective levels of existence in a society. Littering is an un-mindful act. An easy way to start looking into mindfulness is by eating. When eating an orange or an apple, breathe in and out as the

Dr. Kate Neumann and Dr. Herman Selzer were Jews born and educated in Europe. Upon graduation from medical school in Italy, they moved from Italy to Lahore, Pakistan in order to avoid religious persecution. There they established a thriving medical practice and became part of the social elite. Their children, Hazel and Michael, were born in Lahore and grew up in a magnificent stone mansion which few European Jews could ever imagine. During

flavors burst into the mouth. Be mindful of that explosion of tastes. When that taste ends be mindful of permanent changes and that taste only lasts while the food is in the mouth. After swallowing, what food makes you feel like is a much longer lasting feeling. Mindfulness is the best way to eat well. It is also a great mindset to have when interacting with fellow human beings and all forms of life.

cOMPassiOn:The third step of meditation is compassion. The next time

the Second World War, the family was declared stateless citizens upon revocation of their passports by Poland and Germany and forced into internment camps by the British authorities. After the war and the creation of Pakistan, the family resumed their residence in Lahore and held property until 1971. The growing political chaos of the Middle East made Pakistan an unsafe place for Ashkenazi Jews and the family had to move to Israel. Drs. Neumann and Selzer had intended to devote their lives to the free medical treatment of the poor but their generosity of spirit was not kindly received. In 2011, their daughter Hazel Kahan returned to Lahore to visit her place of birth. Hazel now lives in Long Island, NY and like myself, remembers her country of birth from the pre-Islamist era as a splendid and hospitable place.

Now comes the most wonderful time of the year in New York. In my opinion Thanksgiving is the greatest American holiday. This holiday illustrates the generosity and spirit of sharing of the people of this vast land. We who are blessed to live in the greatest country in the world have a lot to be thankful for. We cannot be thankful enough to our civil servants and defenders who keep us safe from enemies, both foreign and domestic. I am thankful for living in our great city of cities. I am thankful for the gifts of life, health, offspring, family, friends and last but not least of all, my wonderful team members and our outstanding pool of patients like you who are a joy to render care to. You inspire my burning desire for constant improvement.

you hear an ambulance or a fire engine’s wailing siren think of the needy being served and feel compassion for those who are providing rescue and being rescued. Feel grateful to live in a society which has the resources and compassion to cherish human life.

Feel compassion even for those who think Wyoming is a country. Meditation ends with feelings of gratitude and appreciation which are the building blocks of happiness.

Excuse me while I touch the SkyAyesha Farooq is a fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force. An air force equipped and trained by the RAF initially and the USAF since the beginning of the cold war. What a Himalayan task for a female to earn her wings in a male dominated organization. Perseverance commands success. Ayesha is a role model for women in societies which have to wake up to equality between sexes. Imagine her in an F16 run showering the Taliban with greetings and gifts from all of us. The best payback, we will send our women to sort you out.
