An urban development plan was carried out with the aim ofwidening the city towards the River. To that end, about 350 hectares on the banks of the river were refilled. However, this project was finally called off, and the lands gained from the River were abandoned. Duringthe next decade, numerous species of plants, trees and animals began to settle in the area, which becamea rich natural reserve for the local flora and fauna. In 1986, the Deliberative Council of the City of BuenosAires decided to turn these lands into a preserved area, open to visitors, thus creating the EnvironmentalReserve.
