God’s grace welcomes you, no matter who you are or where you are from—and so do we. We

believe that Jesus Christ is the true Savior of all people. By his perfect life, innocent death, and

triumphant resurrection he saves all lost sinners even without our help. Jesus Christ makes us

special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible, God’s authentic

message of grace and guidance for us. Whether you are a first time visitor or a returning guest,

we are delighted to share our worship with you. You are always welcome here. If there is

anything we can do to make your visit more comfortable, please let us know. The restrooms

are located down the hall opposite the sanctuary, and there is also a cry room with toys across

from the coat racks. Please worship with us again soon!

God’s Own Child, I Gladly Say It Christian Worship Supplement 737 This hymn is printed on the previous page.

Service of the Word

P: Our Savior Jesus Christ commanded baptism when he said: “Go and make disciples of all

nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” All of us are born into this world with a deep need for baptism. From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus took away our sin by giving his life on the cross. At our baptism he clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and gives us a new life. Our sinful nature need not control us any longer. We recall what baptism means for our daily lives as we speak these words:

C: Baptism means that the sinful nature in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and

repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death. It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

1 The greeting between the pastor and congregation is a reminder that we worship the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is also a reminder that we became members of God’s family through our baptism in the name of the Triune God.

2 Both the pastor and the people admit their guilt to God. The declaration of forgiveness to believers is as valid and certain as if Jesus himself stood before us and declared our sins forgiven through faith.

P: The grace of our Lord 9 Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship

of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you.

Please remain seated during the baptism which opens our service.

P: As baptized children of God we confess our sins: C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have

disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the

atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son 9 and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Addison Grace Kanis

P: In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have brought

this child to be baptized. Jesus told us: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” It is in baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children. By the power of God’s Word, this gracious water of life washes away sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.

P: Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart 9 to mark you as a redeemed child

of Christ. P: Addison Grace Kanis, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit. The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you are born again and made a dear child of your Father in heaven. May God strengthen you to live in your baptismal grace all the days of your life. Peace be with you.

P: Dear parents, our Lord Jesus Christ, in instituting Baptism, not only commanded that

children should be baptized, but that they should be taught to obey everything he has commanded us. I therefore ask you:

Do you sincerely intend to bring up Addison in the way of the Lord and to instruct her in

the truths of God’s saving Word so that she may grow in faith, serve God with a Christian life, and remain in her baptismal grace unto the end? If so, answer: Yes, and we ask God to help us.

Parents: Yes, and we ask God to help us. P: Dear sponsors, Addison has been baptized in the name of the triune God. It is your

privilege and responsibility to remember her in your prayers, to remind her of her baptism, and, as far as possible, to give your counsel and aid that she may be brought up in the true knowledge of God according to the teachings of the Scriptures as confessed by our Lutheran Church. If you intend gladly and willingly to do this, then answer: Yes, and we ask God to help us.

Sponsors: Yes, and we ask God to help us. The congregation may please stand.

P: Brothers and sister in Christ, our Lord commands that we teach his

precious truths to all who are baptized. Christian love, therefore, urges all of us to assist in whatever manner possible so that Addison may remain a child of God until death. If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, and we ask God to help us.

C: Yes, and we ask God to help us.

P: This white garment shows that Christ has taken away your sin and put on you his perfect robe of righteousness.

P: Let us pray: Merciful Father in heaven, we thank you for the gift of Baptism by which you wash away

sin and give us a new and eternal life. Help us each day to remember that through Baptism you clothe us with Christ that we may stand holy and righteous before you. Look with favor on Addison Kanis that she may be kept safe by the gift of your Spirit, grow daily in your grace, and live forever by the power of the risen Christ. Make us willing to carry out our responsibilities to all the baptized, so that all may finally come to the blessed joys of heaven, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen.

P: Behold, to us the Christ is born. O come, let us worship him!

1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26 18 Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. 19 And his

mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the Lord.” So then they would return to their home.

26 Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man.

Please be seated.

P: Let us pray: Almighty God, in mercy you sent your one and only Son to take upon himself our human

nature. By his gracious coming deliver us from the corruption of our sin and transform us into the likeness of his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Please stand.3

(Colossians 3:15a) P: Alleluia. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. Alleluia.

Hebrews 2:10-18

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying,

“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”

And again,

“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 2:10-18

Following the sermon, please stand for the Creed on the next page.

Luke 2:41-52

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and when they did not find him, they

returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

P: This is the gospel of the Lord.

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

4 Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. In the early church, Christians recited a simpler version of the Apostles’ Creed to confess their faith in the same God in whose name they were baptized. It still serves today as a reminder of our Baptism into the Triune God.

5 The members of Grace Lutheran Church have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. Guests need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

Following the offering, please stand to sing stanzas 1 and 5 of CW 40, “O Jesus Christ, Your Manger Is.”

P: During this festive time, dear Father, we rejoice to hear the good news of great joy that

a Savior has been born for us. For fulfilling your prophecies and in the fullness of time sending your Son to be our Savior, we give you our heartfelt thanks and praise.

C: Unto us a child is born! Unto us a Son is given! P: What a great mystery of our faith this is: that God has become fully human for our

salvation! Even though he is the all-powerful Lord of all, he is wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.

C: Help us always believe that this precious child was born as our substitute to be our

Savior.

P: In the midst of our joy, we grieve for the many people in our world who do not know that Jesus has come to bring them forgiveness and healing. As the shepherds spread abroad the good news of the birth of the Savior born for all the world, may we also make use of the unique opportunities this holiday presents to tell others of what we have seen and heard concerning the child.

C: Grant that the true peace between God and fallen mankind may comfort all people. Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer.

P: As the angels sang out their praise, move us also to sing out our praise to you, today and

every day, as the joy of Christmas remains in our hearts. C: Glory to God in the highest! Amen. C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
