MACOM II ® Active Magnetic Field Compensation System

Ensures excellent imaging for research, development, quality assurance and medical engineering – with no magnetic interference

Page 2: MACOM II - Active Magnetic Field Compensation System

By compensating magnetic interference, MACOM II ® enables precise imaging for research, development, quality control and medical diagnostics.

Electron microscopes, highresolution

medical diagnostic equipment and elec

tron beam lithography systems for scan

ning the smallest of structures (such

as in semiconductor manufacturing

for example) require optimum environ

mental conditions to achieve the best

possible results. Research, development,

quality control and diagnostics are the

main applications for highlysensitive

technologies. In addition to a constant

temperature, minimum vibration and

quiet acoustic conditions, a magneti

cally quiet environment is also crucial

for achieving optimum performance.

Magnetic interference fields of just a

few 10 nT already affect the resolu

tion of sensitive systems, while typical

sources of interference such as trams

and trains, power cables and electrical

installations in buildings often create

magnetic interference fields of several

100 nT. Passive screening of these fields

is usually very expensive. MACOM II ®,

the active magnetic field compensation

system from MüllerBBM, creates the

optimum magnetically quiet environ

mental conditions for your systems with

the minimum of effort.

Optimise your imaging output and ex

ploit the performance of your systems

to the full. By enabling more reliable

and meaningful imaging – without in

terfering magnetic fields – MACOM II ®

ensures that your investment in the

latest analytical and diagnostics techno

logy will pay dividends more quickly.

Our experience – your success

For more than 40 years MüllerBBM has

been a leading engineering company in the

field of technical acoustics and vibration

control, and for the past ten years we have

also been acting as consulting engineers for

electromagnetic compatibility. All three fields

are accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC

17025, and the quality management system

of MüllerBBM is also certified according to

ISO 9001. As a result of our wideranging

experience, we are able to provide our

customers with a comprehensive service by

performing a site analysis and/or identifying

sources of interference prior to the installa

tion of a sensitive system. Our goal is to cre

ate complete, fully functioning solutions that

deliver perfect results for your work.

The product we offer for magnetic field re

duction is the state of the art MACOM II ®

magnetic field compensation system. Easy to

operate and maintenancefree, this system

automatically creates the optimum working

conditions for you.

Patented technology

All the knowhow we have gathered over

decades of experience from our develop

ment and consultancy work in the area of

magnetic fields has gone into MACOM II ®.

The result is a patented system successfully

used worldwide which helps scientists, re

searchers and physicians analyze and docu

ment their work better. MACOM II ® actively

helps you obtain better results.

The applications of MACOM technology are as exciting as they are wide-ranging:

Material analyses / metallurgical structural investigations

Nanoparticle research

All scanning electron microscope applications

Semiconductor technology / chip manufacture

Medical diagnostics (especially magnetic resonance tomography)

Userfriendly, maintenancefree operation, perfect results – MACOM II ® is bound to convince you of its benefits.

Maintenance-free operation

MACOM II ® automatically neutralizes

interfering magnetic fields. Once it

has been set up correctly during com

missioning, the system requires no fur

ther maintenance. For operating the

system and monitoring its functions

MACOM II ® has a display on which all

parameters can be viewed and adjusted

if necessary. During operation the dis

play shows either the remaining magne

tic field in all three coordinate directions

or the coil current required to create the

opposing field. For optimum support

MACOM II ® is equipped with one serial

and one Ethernet port, allowing it to be

controlled from an external computer

over an intranet or the internet.

The system also supports optional

re mote control or monitoring by

MüllerBBM. The advantage is obvious:

perfect service anywhere in the world

– without incurring unnecessary travel

expenses.

As vector fields, magnetic fields can be

cancelled out by another field of the

same magnitude in the other direction.

MACOM II ® automates this process. In

practice the superpositioning does not

provide full cancellation, but it does

considerably reduce magnetic inter

ference fields. The prevailing magnetic

field is measured and a corresponding

opposing field is created by means of an

arrangement of currentcarrying coils.

Since magnetic fields change quickly

or slowly depending on the particu

lar source of the interference (e.g. DC

electric trains, electrical switches or mo

ving metallic objects such as lifts, steel

doors or motor vehicles in the vicinity),

MACOM II ® operates across a wide fre

quency range.

The heart of the system is the patented

sensor which measures interference

fields from 0 Hz (constant field) to over

100 kHz. The sensor signal is processed

in an analogue automatic control unit

with a stable control range between

0 Hz and 50 kHz. A broadband power

amplifier generates the current for the

opposing field. The system works as a

closed control loop, with the oppo

sing field instantaneously following the

changes in the interference field.

The coils for the opposing field are

placed at the edges of the space to be

compensated; depending on the size of

this space, a selfsupporting alumi nium

construction may also be used. The sen

sor is mounted at the point where the

maximum field reduction is to be at

tained. If this is not feasible it can also

be placed outside this area, so to some

extent it is possible to utilize the symme

trical properties of the coil arrangement

to freely select the point of maximum

field reduction.
