Dear Parents, Staff and Students

The school has a strong reputation for providing a quality learning environment, a caring welfare structure, fantastic facilities and great achievements in the school program. This is further enhanced by the school providing the best education including a focus on academic achievement and excellence. It is not about lessening any focus on the performing arts, sport or a broad curriculum, but rather enhancing what we have to truly cater for the needs of all students. Open Day 19 February and Open Evening 21 February Our Open Day for Years 5 and 6 with their parents and the Parent Information Evening were held recently. Primary students discovered more about the excellence of their local girls’ high school and participated in school activities and parents discovered the high quality education that we provide at Mackellar. Applications for Mackellar’s 2019 Gifted &Talented programs were due by 22 February; enrolment forms for Year 7 2019 will be issued by primary schools this week and are due to be returned to them by 19 March 2019. Local Catchment Area for Mackellar Girls The Department of Education has determined that now all government schools need to have a local catchment area. This has not previously applied to single sex schools. Mackellar Girls now has a local area, with all girls living within that area entitled to attend Mackellar Girls. It is predicted that there will be scope for a small number of out-of-area students to also be enrolled into Year 7 at Mackellar Girls. There is an online tool to locate NSW public schools and their designated local areas. The School Finder is at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/schoolfinder Safe Driving Please drive safely in the vicinity of the school. Do not double park outside the school to drop off or pick up your daughter. Do not stop near the pedestrian crossings so you block the vision of students and other drivers. Do not do U turns in front of the school. All of these actions make it dangerous for our girls and we are concerned about their safety. Adolescent vaccinations Please be aware that free catch-up vaccinations are available for all young people under 20 years of age, including the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine. Full details are available on the NSW Health website at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/young-adult-vax.aspx. Student Merit Award System At Mackellar we have an extensive award system designed to acknowledge achievement and encourage effort and improvement. Every student is encouraged to give of their best, and every student is eligible for these awards. Personal Best Assemblies Each semester students who are achieving their personal best, as indicated by their School Report, are acknowledged. In Years 7-10, a Gold Merit Award indicates personal best in all subjects on their semester report; a Silver Merit Award indicates personal best in all but two subjects. In Years 11-12, a Gold Merit represents 5 subjects of personal best and a Silver Merit all but one subject. Mackellar Merit Certificates Merit Certificates are issued by teachers for academic excellence, sport, school service, leadership and extra curricular programs. Points from 1 - 5 are assigned to each certificate, depending on the excellence of the achievement. Merit Certificates are issued for successes such as outstanding assessment tasks or tests, commitment to homework, excellent organisation, representing the school individually or in a team, school service, consistent punctuality, fundraising, band, debating and rock eisteddfod. Merit Certificates are tallied by the Assistant Year Adviser and may result in the award of Merit Banners, Medallions and Plaques that are awarded at the end of the year on Presentation Day. Upon receiving 3 or more Merit Banners, a student receives a Merit Medallion; upon receiving 6 Merit Banners a student receives a Merit Plaque.

W@M Report This term the prefects organised the Year 12 skit for our last swimming carnival, which included dancing to Miley Cyrus and dressing up as something that reminded us of our childhood. On Friday the 1st of March, the prefects ran the Year 8 sleepover, where girls from Year 8 slept over at school in the hall and participated in fun activities that enabled them to bond with their fellow peers and to get to know the Prefects better. Some of the fun activities included Just Dance, treasure hunts, team work and communication games, trivia and physical activities on the oval. The night ended with a movie, The Greatest Showman which we all sang along to. We hope the Year 8 girls had as much fun as we did!

The prefects also volunteered at the Days for Girls workshop, where we helped to make reusable sanitary pads and kits that will be sent to girls in developing countries. These reusable sanitary kits will allow young girls to attend school and will also help to educate them on menstrual health. The hygiene solutions will assist women and girls in breaking the cycle of poverty and living their lives with dignity.

Coming up, the prefects will be attending the International Women’s Day Breakfast at Manly Golf Club and prefect Leilahni will be participating in the UN NSW Youth Conference.

LIBRARY UPDATE -

We have had another great start to another school year at Mackellar! With some bright new faces, the Library is busier than ever.

Year 7 has completed their Library inductions. Each class had 2 double lessons to learn the ropes about borrowing books, finding resources and utilising all that the Library has to offer. The girls have been borrowing items en masse and we hope this continues!

Book clubs have also begun again this year, with Year 7 meeting on Tuesday at lunch with Miss Mailey. Any new recruits are welcome! Year 8 will continue with Miss Langford on Tuesday at lunch as well. Miss Marshall takes the Year 9 Book club on Monday and Miss Reed is heading the seniors on Fridays.

On February 14th we held the annual Library Lovers Day. Students were asked what they loved about the Mackellar Library and answers were posted on our great display. At lunch, it was time to start the blind dates! Blind Date with a Book is a lucky dip for readers. Books are covered in paper so the reader does not know the novel they will be taking home. Our books were all borrowed in record time, with only one left after 10 minutes of being on offer. We hope the students all enjoyed their blind dates.

As the term progresses, the first assignments of the year are starting to be due. We encourage all students to ensure that they: Check the stand for information sheets regarding printing, uploading printing credit and connecting to the Wi-Fi. Be timely with their printing: you cannot begin logging on and printing once the bell has gone. Please come at

the beginning of lunch, or before the last 10 minutes to ensure any issues can be resolved before it is time for class.

Buy printing credit from the Library. The office no longer sells printing credit. Cards can be bought for either $2 or $5. Please check you have the correct amount for your printing needs!

One half of the term is done and dusted and a busy second half awaits us.

Mrs Reed and Miss Langford

These programs reflect a stronger educative and strengths based focus on Health, Wellbeing and Relationships, Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles and Movement Skill - through development of self-management, interpersonal and movement skills. Year 7 has started their learning program on “My Health and Wellbeing” that looks closely at a holistic view of health and wellbeing and supportive strategies. Year 9 is investigating varied approaches to improving and strengthening Mental Health.

SPORT - We held our Swimming Carnival in week 3 at the Manly Boy Charlton Swimming Centre. It was a fantastic day with record attendance and participation. The Zone Carnival will be held at the Aquatic Centre on Friday 8 March, and the Regional Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday 21st March at Homebush. Swimming Carnival Results as follows:

LANGUAGES -

Language classes are off to a great start with students speaking in various languages, writing Valentine’s day cards, eating sushi, learning about verbs, listening to podcasts/radio announcements and participating in Karnevale activities.

Students who are not currently studying a language in Years 9 and10 but wish to do so have an opportunity to choose Beginner level languages (German, Japanese and French) for Years 11 and 12. The course assumes no prior knowledge and covers content on travel and tourism, daily routine, food and socialising.

Language teachers are busy preparing for the upcoming Year 8 Language Day that will be held on Friday 24 May. It is a wonderful opportunity for all Year 8 language students to experience a whole day immersion program. More information will be included in the permission note.
