Mack ®Service Ahead of the Pack

This issue of Bulldog focuses on service. Not the service you get from your dealer but thekind we provide to our communities. The kind of service Mack® Trucks knows by heart, since we’ve been practicing it for more than a hundred years.

We’re talking about military, municipal, fire and rescue service. Taking care of thesemarkets is such a priority for Mack that we’re devoting this issue to them to make youaware of the company’s great tradition in these important sectors.

Since the early days, Mack Trucks has provided the kind of safe, rugged and reliabletrucks that people have come to expect from us. Back then, the things we now accept asroutine didn’t exist. Take snowplowing. In the early 1900s, municipalities didn’t clear theroads. The Mack brothers helped to pioneer the service by mounting a wooden plow ona Mack municipal refuse truck.

Mack entered the military arena in World War I when the company sold AC chassis tothe British government. Because of their toughness and reliability on the battlefield, theAC became known by soldiers as the Bulldog — and a legend was born.

We’ve always been proud to serve fire and rescue services but never more so than after9/11, when firefighters used a 1955 B85 model to squeeze through the narrow tunnelsleading to the Pentagon. Mack also provided six trucks free of charge to New York Cityfor use in the round-the-clock cleanup efforts at the World Trade Center site.

Which brings us to the present. For the military, Mack is launching a new vehicle thatpromises a greater degree of reliability and longevity for our troops — the M915 line-haulchassis. To help municipalities keep the highways clear we’re offering new specs for theGranite® snowplow that should provide greater control and easier maintenance, even whenthe plow is attached. And listen to the firefighters in Loch Sheldrake, New York, talk abouthow their new Granite pumper can bring life-saving water to even the most congested places.

There’s more. In this issue we announce our U.S., Canadian and International Distributorsof the Year. We profile fleets hauling the biggest cargo and distributors employing someof the most dedicated workers. And we feature customers who use Mack to deliver hopeas well as materials for the disabled.

Enjoy the ride.

The Bulldog got its name during a time of war. Now a truck famous forits rugged durability is returning to service.

Mack® trucks has honorably served the armed forces of several countrieswith dedicated vehicles. In 1955, the Mack M125 model became theArmy’s 10-ton prime mover, providing decades of support to themilitary. In 2005, Mack President and CEO Paul L. Vikner suggestedthe company should re-enter the military-vehicle market, a place it hadoccupied with acclaim since 1911.

To that end, Mack is continuing the tradition of service by creating theM915 prototype, a new generation of military line-haul vehicles.

Built on the Granite® platform, the M915 features a 480 HP MP8 non-EGR engine. The power unit is compatible with the military’s highsulfur jet fuel (JP8) and can produce 1,800 lb.-ft. of torque. The unit isoutfitted with a Mack PowerLeash™ engine brake, Allison® HD 4560 6-speed automatic transmission with a Mack 6-rod tandem springsuspension. The cab is welded galvanized steel with an optional armorkit. Safety and communications systems include Hawker® Armasafe Plusbatteries with battery disconnect switch, GuardDog® active maintenancemonitor system, Mack Road Connect™ communications system withGPS, LED blackout lighting and an Eaton® VORAD® collision warningsystem. Central Tire Inflation (CTI) system is an option. The truck has arange of 695 miles.

The M915 is the newest member of an all-American family that includes6x4 vehicles for hauling tankers, flatbed and lowboy trailers and 6x6versions that can handle large construction equipment. The trucks willbe assembled in Macungie, Pennsylvania, with engines manufactured inHagerstown, Maryland.

While Mack provides the vehicle, its partners, Forschler & Associatesand VSE Corporation in Alexandria, Virginia, have provided many ofthe military adaptations.

Last year Mack built two prototypes of the M915. This year the companyintends to bid for an Army contract. The Army’s total inventory of thesetypes of vehicles is about 12,000.

With wars in Iraq and Afghanistan generating a need for safe, reliabletransportation, Mack is re-entering the market at the right time, according to Ron Rajsky, vice president of government sales with theMack Military Group.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to support our troops insupplying the military with the best solutions in transportation,” he said.“The M915 combines a rugged, durable vehicle with state-of-the-artcrew protection and fire suppression systems.”

To build a vehicle capable of both on- and off-road use, Mack startedwith the Granite® model construction chassis, incorporating 46,000 lb.Meritor® tandem rear axles and a Mack 6-rod tandem spring suspension.Despite the extreme temperatures in which the trucks operate, rangingfrom 135 degrees Fahrenheit in the deserts of Iraq to 20 below in themountains of Afghanistan, Mack engineers needed only a slightmodification for cold climates — a diesel pre-heater for quick starts.Granite’s cooling system was already equipped to deal with the stress, since Mack already builds commercial vehicles for South America andthe Middle East.

While the M915 rides on a tried-and-true platform, it’s the crewprotection system that makes it ideal for the military, according toHarold Welsh, director of engineering for government sales at MackWorld Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

“Historically these kinds of trucks were designed to haul supplies to thefront line. They were not designed to go into battle. But now that theyare used in places like Iraq where there are improvised explosive devicesand no front lines, the Military needs armored line-haul vehicles.”

One of the most important features of the M915 is crew protection. Thecab is built from layers of hardened steel and aluminum, special ceramics andfabrics. Even the 3-inch-thick glass is armored. The Military requires a fire

suppression system with heat and infrared detectors that can automaticallyextinguish a fire while allowing the crew to breathe. Mack also uses fueltanks that are coated with fire-suppressant material.

The Army has several other requirements that make the Mack product idealfor service, Welsh said. The truck must start on a 20 percent grade and achievecruising speeds of more than 65 miles an hour. The M915 is compatiblewith JP8, the same fuel the Military uses to power its jet helicopters.

The vehicle also has to have dual voltage, 12-volt for lighting and 24-voltfor operations such as starting the vehicle and running military accessoriesthat include chemical agent alarms and sensors. The Army will mount allsecurity-sensitive equipment like the chemical sensors.

Mack has devised two systems that deal specifically with the harsh conditionssoldiers face on the modern battlefield. The first is a front axle with sealedwheel bearings rated at 14,600 lb. The second is a pre-cleaner that blowsdust from the air intake before it gets through the ductwork to the filter.

But the biggest advantage of M915 is its ability to get troops out ofdanger quickly.

“The soldiers say speed equals safety,” Welsh said. “They just put thepedal to the metal and go.”

Bulldog Serves with Distinction

Nearly 100 years ago soldiers relied on Mack® trucks to provide thetransportation and construction infrastructure that is crucial to thesuccess of a nation’s armed forces.

The company began selling to the military in 1911 with contracts withthe U.S. War Department. The first AC prototype, the E-2, was loanedto the federal government and driven to the U.S. Army camp inPlattsburg, New York, in 1915. In 1916, Mack built its first armored caron an AB model for the Armored Motor Truck Battery of the New YorkState National Guard.

In the spring of 1917 the British government ordered 150 of the 5-tonAC chassis for quick delivery to their military forces. Because of thetruck’s pugnacious front and the way it helped British troops completedifficult tasks under tough conditions it was dubbed Bull Dog Mack byBritish engineers. The U.S. government ordered 4,000 Bulldogs.

In 1942, Mack was again asked to build trucks for the war effort andreceived the Army-Navy E Award for outstanding production.

By 1955, the Mack M125 model had become the Army’s 10-ton primemover, providing decades of military support. Throughout the 1970sand 1980s Mack continued to supply the Air Force with fueling trucks.

In 2005, the company made the commitment to develop the MackGranite M915 line-haul truck, which uses the most advancedtechnologies to transport and protect both cargo and crew.

Full Steam Ahead for Mack Military Group

With a crucial request for proposals due, the Mack Military Group hasstepped up its efforts to capture the hearts and minds of Army personnelkey to deciding the eventual recipient of the contract, worth in excess of$300 million.

To this end, the Volvo Powertrain plant in Hagerstown and Mackmanufacturing facility in Macungie recently played host to Col. Jeffrey Helmick,U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) system managerfor transportation. He is stationed at the U.S. Army Transportation Corpsheadquarters at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Col. Helmick’s previous assignment was battalion commander in Iraq, where he gained firsthand insight into the Army’s current and futureheavy-duty truck needs. In fact, you may have seen him on televisionnews during the initial invasion of Iraq as he had NBC News embeddedwith his unit during the drive toward Baghdad.

During his two days with Mack Military Group representatives — includingRon Rajsky, group vice president, and retired Gen. George P.A. Forschler, authorized representative to the federal government for Mack — Col. Helmickwas impressed with all he learned about the advanced protective and safetytechnologies placed on the Mack military prototype M915 line-haul trucks.

“He has been instrumental in pushing the Mack team to strive to providethe best vehicles ever made to protect and serve U.S. servicemen in harm’sway — wherever they are,” Rajsky said. Col. Helmick and Harold Welsh.

Mack ® Plows Ahead with Granite®

P R O D U C T S

It used to be the mailman who could get through weather conditions ofany kind, from snow to sleet to freezing rain. Now it’s Mack’s turn.

With the new specifications for Granite snowplows, Mack is making iteasier to keep the roads open during the roughest weather.

“The new Granite makes for the ultimate snowplowing machine,” saidDan Wickline, director of government and municipal sales. “The parentfront framerail extension offers exceptional strength when mountingplows and other equipment. And the new engine hatches will enablemaintenance personnel to check critical fluid levels without having toremove the plow.”

The models also offer a number of snowplow-specific options, includingthe Road Watch® temperature gauge that reads the road surfacetemperature, automatically adjusting the amount of chemicals to spread

for the conditions.Auxiliary lampprovisions have beenmade for dash controland power supply forinstallation of asnowplow light.Keeping the enginewarm is a Phillips®

120-volt heater.Granite also offers heated, tinted mirrors and windshield for clearvisibility in all conditions. For greater visibility, a one-piece windshieldwill be available in September.

The Granite models are available in axle-forward and axle-backconfigurations with either the MP7 or MP8 engine.

The streets of New York City might have been clogged with snow wellinto the 20th century if it hadn’t been for the garbage collectors.

In 1910, five years after they started their company, the Mack brothersstrapped a plow on the front of one of the city’s sanitation vehicles andcleared the way for the collectors — and a whole new industry.

If you could call it a plow. The first one consisted of a large boardconnected to the vehicle with a 2x4 that was lifted by a chain hookedto a lever inside the cab.

“The Mack brothers never set out to clear the streets,” said Doug Schumaker,co-curator of the Mack Trucks Historical Museum in Allentown, Pennsylvania.“But they couldn’t collect the refuse until they could get the snow off thestreets. That’s how snow removal got started in major cities like New York.”

Many cities also put snowplows on fire trucks so they could get throughthe streets, he said.

The business of plowing took a huge leap forward with the introductionof the Mack AC model in 1916. The AC combined six-wheel tractionwith six-cylinder power. Equipped with snowplows, the AC servedmunicipalities from Delaware to Wisconsin. Mack continued to makesnowplow versions of its best-selling construction trucks.

Mack further refined its line withthe introduction in 1973 of theRM model. The RM was designedas an all-wheel-drive unit for heavysnowplowing and roadmaintenance work. It featured asteel butterfly hood, center-mounted R series cab andextended front frame.

Today, Mack works with highway departments to build trucks to theirspecifications. The company’s newest product, the Granite snowplow,is just such a cooperative effort with the Pennsylvania Department ofTransportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

“The trucks are developed specifically for snow removal,” Schumakersaid. “They have special gear speeds, hydraulic devices to raise and lowerplows and access doors in the hood. We even make special vehicles formunicipalities with all-wheel-drive.”

For years Mack has participated in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’sClimate Leaders Program, a partnership between industry and governmentthat works with companies to develop long-term comprehensive climatechange strategies. Partners set a corporate-wide greenhouse gas reductiongoal and inventory their emissions to measure progress.

Mack is using a combination of proven exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)technology and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to satisfy the newrequirements, which reduce allowable levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by a minimum of 50 percent and particulates (soot) by a minimum of 90 percent from previous already clean levels.

“This milestone further confirms the effectiveness of our ‘07 solution and the fact that we are ready to deliver the performance and value that our customers expect and demand from Mack,” said Paul Vikner, president and CEO.

Since 1988 when the EPA started mandating clear exhaust emissions fromheavy duty diesel trucks, Mack has improved emissions by up to 99 percent. But the company didn’t stop there.

“Just about anybody can come up with a technological solution to tailpipeemissions,” said David McKenna, Powertrain Sales & Marketing manager.“The art is having a commercially viable solution. From a customer’sviewpoint, that means we answer the question, ‘Will this technologydisrupt my duty cycles? Will it affect the weight of the truck or the life ofthe engine?’ The answer to all of those questions is ‘No.’ We’ve been goodstewards of the environment, we have good technology and we have acommercially viable application for it. That is the key to this business.”

Mack Trucks will use a combination of proven exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) technology and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to satisfy thenitrogen oxide (NOx) portion of the federal diesel engine emissionsregulations scheduled to take effect in 2010.

The regulations, developed by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA), call for NOx emissions levels to be reduced more than 80 percent from the standard that took effect in January 2007.

The base engines for Mack’s 2010 solution will belong to its MP series, which utilize high-performance EGR to meet 2007 NOx standards.

Mack also confirmed that its EPA ‘10 solution will feature the dieselparticulate filter (DPF) being deployed for 2007, as the requiredparticulate matter emissions levels remain the same for 2010.

SCR is an after-treatment system that involves injecting a liquidurea solution into the engine exhaust stream to break down NOx.Manufactured primarily from natural gas, urea is a readily-available,soluble nitrogen-based compound widely used in agricultural fertilizersand considered a non-hazardous substance by the EPA.

Mack Easy on Fuel and EnvironmentThe Mack commitment to saving fuel and the environment didn’t start in 2007.

For Patsy Herman, the phrase “putting on the dog” has taken on newmeaning since she founded Denver-based SPS Design LLC. The company, known as Mack-Duds, sells novelty clothing for hood ornaments.

The outfits let drivers dress their Bulldog as a superhero (blue body suit withred cape), as a biker (black suit with silver studs), as a woman (pink suitwith rivets) and as Santa (you get the picture).

The line made its debut in the Mack Shop catalog in 2006.

“Mack-Duds outfits are fun and will give a hood ornament or paper weighta character all its own,” Herman said, adding that they are also as rugged asthe icon they clothe.

“The outfits being sold today are ornate, durable and will stand up to mostweather conditions. They are made of high quality marine vinyl or Naugahydethat is resistant to mildew, stain and cold up to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.”

Herman got the idea for the company from her late husband Jerry, whowanted to buy a Mack for his livestock trailer repair business but could onlyafford the gold hood ornament. When her son Shane started a truckingbusiness in 1998, he used the gold Bulldog as a tribute to his dad.

The two of them felt pleased but thought something was missing.

“What I did not realize while driving home, glancing at the naked Bulldog, isthat what I thought was a silly idea would soon become an obsession,” she said.

At first Herman draped material over the Bulldog. She then designed fiveprototypes, got permission from Mack Trucks and found a manufacturer.

You can see Mack-Duds merchandise at the Mack Shop (www.mack-shop.com)or by visiting Herman’s site at http://www.mackduds.com.

Newest Firehouse Dog is a Mack

Tight Fit the Right Fit for Mack ®

For firefighters at the Pentagon after 9/11, an antiqueMack truck became the little engine that could.

On September 11, 2001, after a hijacked Boeing 757 slammed into partof the 29 acre complex used by uniformed and civilian employees of theU.S. military, a mutual aid call went out to firefighters in the region.Crews were having trouble getting equipment through the tunnels thatled to the Pentagon and needed vehicles that could reach the scene.

Woodsboro, Maryland, Volunteer Fire Chief Micky Fyock thought he hadthe answer — a 1955 Mack B85 model open cab ladder truck.

“All we were worried about is getting down there and getting the job done,”Fyock said. “I told the crew that’s all that mattered. I didn’t care if we hadto tow it back or bring it back in pieces.”

Driver Robert Compton said the trip down I-270 was harrowing. “Theinterstate was empty. I think the truck maxed out at 68 mph and that wasgoing downhill.” Once in the tunnel, Compton found the clearance especiallytight at places where firefighters had placed planks for hoses. When theyemerged into the courtyard, they found another harrowing scene: thewreckage of a portion of the Pentagon surrounded by body bags. Fyocksaid as he looked at the damaged building lit up by the flashing lights,

he realized his rural, volunteer fire company was playing a historic role.“We were called by these career people because they needed our little truck.”

Throughout the night, the crew took turns on the 65 ft. ladder, directinga curtain of water on the undamaged portion of the building to stop thespread of fire. By mid-morning, their job completed, the volunteers wenthome, proud to have been part of the operation.

“This is our company’s legacy,” Fyock said. “We had the little truck thatcould — and did.”

From the moment he climbed into the new Granite® pumper, Harry Barrettwas fired up about Mack.

“I drove the truck from Four Guys Fire Apparatus bodybuilders inMeyersdale, Pennsylvania, a distance of 350 miles,” said Barrett, firstvice president of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association.“We put on the cruise control, put the PowerLeash™ brake on low andplayed country tunes all the way. We hardly touched the gas or the brakeall across Pennsylvania. It was a beautiful ride.”

That ride started in December 2006 when the department put its formertruck, a 1985 Mack with a 1953 tank, out to pasture. The company’sservice territory, Loch Sheldrake, is like many areas of New York State.

It’s a small community, about 2,000 people plus another 20,000 touristsduring the summer. It’s mostly rural and only 15 percent of the district’s25 square miles is covered by hydrants.

“When we spec’d the truck we wanted 3,500 gallons of water with a1,750 gallon-per-minute fire pump and plenty of hose,” he said. “Ourchief engineer, Lem Austin, is a tractor-trailer driver and he said Mackwas the only way to go for superior performance.”

They got that and more with the Granite axle-back chassis, whichfeatures a 427 HP engine and an Allison® automatic transmission. The district bought the chassis from Mack Trucks through a grant from theU.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency and even before it wentinto service, the truck started turning heads.

“Several neighboring departments have inspected the truck and are veryimpressed. Our mutual aid companies did not believe what this truckwould do until they saw it in action.”

Even Barrett, who had driven the rig, was impressed when the Mack gotits first call.

“This truck is unbelievable. The maneuverability is awesome. We’re allrural with small driveways. That truck can get in anywhere.”

Members of the Hummels Wharf Fire Department were stars of thecinema in a recent Walt Disney movie but their new Granite® fire truckis stealing the show at exhibitions from Virginia to Indiana.

The axle-back Granite features a 427 HP ASET™ engine with an Allison®

4500 EVS 5-speed automatic transmission, 18,000-lb. front axle and44,000-lb. rear axle. Its biggest feature, however, is excitement.

“It is a dream to drive,” said John G. Grove, deputy chief of the departmentin Hummels Wharf, Pennsylvania. “It has a great deal of torque on thelow end making acceleration a breeze. You have to watch the speedometerclosely as you can easily go a lot faster than you want to. Top speed is 65 mphbut you get there very quickly. When you stand beside it, you feel dwarfedby its size. When you get behind the wheel, you feel like you are drivinga pickup truck due to its great ride and handling characteristics. You candrive it all day long and feel great when you get out.”

“It’s fully loaded,” said salesman Christopher Boucher at SusquehannaMotor Co. in Milton, Pennsylvania. “It has a premier interior, windowmirrors, power locks, keyless entry, automatic traction control andAlcoa’s Dura-Bright® aluminum wheel rims.”

The department ordered the Granite from Susquehanna Motor and had itshipped to Semo Tank/Baker Equipment in Perrysville, Missouri. Semobuilt the stainless steel body and tank and installed the 1,250 gallon-per-min.Hale pump on the Mack frame. The tank can carry 3,000 gallons of waterand dump its load in about a minute using three 10-inch automatic chutes.

The rest of the department’s all-Mack fleet consists of three fire trucks —a 1951 L model, 1974 MB model 1975 MB model — plus a 1984 MRmodel tanker.

With a new, attractive Granite, firefighters can’t help but show it offaround the country. They exhibited at a fireman’s expo in Virginia Beach,Virginia, last February and displayed the tanker at the Fire DepartmentInstructor’s Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, in April. FDIC isconsidered the premier event for fire apparatus manufacturers and drawsabout 25,000 firefighters. The truck is also touring expos in Pennsylvaniaand Massachusetts.

This isn’t the first time the men and equipment of Hummels Wharf havemade the news. In 2003, six of the volunteers showed up for a castingcall for firefighters to be used as extras in the Disney move “Ladder 49”starring John Travolta.

Mack firefighting apparatus has always been available as a commercialchassis but from 1911–1990 Mack also offered a complete line of customchassis and units built specifically for fire service, according to Harvey Eckart, writing in 2005 in Mack Fire Trucks.

“During the 1910s the American fire service was rapidly converting tomotorized equipment, and Mack, like many others, was supplying apparatusin increasing numbers,” Eckart said. “Much of the apparatus delivered onthe early Mack… lines were chemical engines and hose wagons.”

The first Mack pumping engine was built in 1911 for the Union FireAssociation of Lower Merion, Pennsylvania, where it served the Philadelphiasuburb of Cynwyd, now known as Bala-Cynwyd, writes John B. Montvillein the 1981 book Mack: A Living Legend of the Highway.

Introduced in 1914, the AB was the first standardized high volumemodel. It was followed in 1916 by the heavy duty companion to the AB series, the AC.

Mack fire apparatus proved popular with the New York Fire Department, which took delivery of its first units in 1912. By 1913, the department wastesting a combination chemical wagon and squad car that Mack had built.

Mack fire apparatus took a big step forward in 1919 with the introductionof an improved rotary pump, which was designed by Mack engineers onan AC model chassis and built by the Northern Fire Apparatus Company.

Small communities found an ideal firefighting unit in a 500 gallon pumpercalled the Mack Type-50 while the Mack Type-70 pumper met the needsfor a medium-capacity pumping engine.

Mack also made several hook and ladder trucks, including the Type-90with a 99 HP engine and the Type-19 tractor-drawn aerial ladder truckwith a Mack-designed and built engine-driven power hoist.

During 1944 and 1945 Mack fabricated bodies for many of the Class 155high-pressure fog foam crash trucks.

The Mack B series fire apparatus, with gasoline engines, was introducedin 1954. The C series cab-forward line of Mack fire apparatus wasintroduced in 1957.

In the early 1960s, Mack offered the Aerialscope elevating platform toprovide a versatile firefighting unit that could act as both a manned watertower and highly maneuverable aerial rescue device.

In 1967, the CF line of cab-forward apparatus offered a radio controlled pump.

As Harvey Eckart wrote, “All Mack chassis are available as commercialchassis for another manufacturer to build as a complete fire truck.”

A Century of Fire Service

The first Mack pumping engine, based on a Senior chassis, was built in 1911.

After working for a waste disposal company for years, the husband-and-wifeteam went solo to create a pair of companies that remove and recycleconstruction debris.

Starting in 1997 with a single truck and about 10 roll-off containers, the couple has grown Shamrock Disposal to 35 employees, a fleet of 18trucks and more than 700 roll-off boxes. They serve the Twin Cities ofMinneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, a broad market that ranges fromsmall homebuilders to large general contractors to specialty concrete androofing contractors.

“We’ve grown through word-of-mouth and by building relationshipswith contractors,” Rich Gersdorf said. “We provide a good service at agood price and cater to the contractors’ needs.”

But it was the creation of a 20,000-sq.-ft. facility in 2003 called ShamrockRecycling that put the company at the head of a growing national trend.

In 1978, about 20,000 U.S. landfills accepted construction waste, according to This Old House® magazine. By mid-2006, that number hadplunged to 3,091. As construction in the Twin Cities area continued toexpand, the Gersdorfs saw an opportunity to increase profits whiledecreasing waste.

“By starting the recycling facility, we were able to minimize what youhave to take to the landfill,” Gersdorf said. “Obviously that’s any hauler’sbiggest expense, although fuel is a close second. The more product we’reable to recycle to generate revenue, the less we have to pay to a landfill.”

While some construction debris is still trucked to landfills, Shamrockcan condense more than 100 yards of miscellaneous debris into 25 yards

of landfill waste. The facility processes more than 100 million pounds ofconstruction and demolition debris each year.

By doing good for the environment, the Gersdorfs have found theycan do well for themselves. “Everyone wants to do what’s best for theenvironment but you’re going to do what’s most cost-effective. We’vecome up with a solution that does both.”

So has the Gersdorfs’ technology partner, Mack Trucks. Shamrockruns an all-Mack fleet from Twin City Mack. The roll-off trucks areGranite® models with 370HP Mack ASET™ engines, Eaton® Fuller®

transmissions and air ride suspensions. The tractors are Mack Vision™

day cabs spec’ed with ASET AC 380 engines.

Shamrock recently took delivery of nine Granite Axle-Back models andordered four Vision DayCabs. The company anticipates moving to thenew Pinnacle™ highway tractor sometime this year.

Greg Nuss, owner of the Nuss Truck Group/Twin Cities Mack, admiresthe couple for their hard work and innovation. “You can always talk tothe owner, and they stay in touch with their customers.”

Gersdorf said the feeling is mutual. “They’re always able to deliver thetruck the next morning, so we don’t have any downtime.”

That’s essential in today’s competitive environment, he said. “In ourbusiness, we’ve got to be there when the customer hangs up the phone. If the trucks aren’t dependable, we’re not dependable. That’s why webuy Mack.”

Take a look at what a little elbow grease accomplished at a concrete materialsoperation on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. That Granite you’restaring at is the pride of Mayco Mix Ltd. of Nanaimo, a company thatshines as much as the 45 units in its fleet, most of which are Mack. Thetruck features the new MP7 engine.

Part of the Heidelberg Cement Group, Mayco Mix provides concreteproducts for building contractors and homeowners. In business for morethan 29 years, the company has three locations in the Central Island areaand services Vancouver Island as well as several of the local Gulf Islands.

Each year Mayco buys several Granite chassis for those locations from NanaimoMack. The units are outfitted with Fuller® 11-speed transmissions, 18,000-lb.FLX18 axles, 46,000-lb. Meritor® rear axles, Hendrickson® Haulmax rearsuspensions, spring front suspensions and Alcoa® aluminum wheels.

Mayco then sends the chassis to London Machinery in London, Ontario, where the company mounts a 14-yd. McNeilus Bridgemaster III mixer. With some of its units, Mayco is pioneering the use of composite mixerdrums. These drums are a full 2,000 pounds lighter than an equivalentsteel drum, enabling drivers to carry up to an additional half yard ofpayload on every trip.

That innovation is only one of the reasons that makes Mayco “a greatcompany to deal with,” according to Cory Chisholm, who is in charge ofparts and operations for Nanaimo Mack. “Everybody who works there isamazing. They are very friendly and very understanding and cooperative.”

Chisholm said for Mayco, the real beauty of the trucks is in the service. “Ifthey have a problem with one of their older trucks, it’s in, it’s fixed, it’s out.”

Mayco Mixers Picture PerfectOK, let’s be honest. There are a lot of sayings about Mack trucks that ring true. Like “Built like a Mack”or “If it’s a dump truck it needs to be a Mack.” But “She’s a beauty” isn’t usually associated withthe brand. Until now.

To visitors, the inside of the Basic Group’s new truck-dispatching facilitylooks like a NASA ground station. To management, the advancedtechnology looks like money.

Dispatchers sit at four computer stations and monitor a projection screenthat covers one wall. As the sales office takes orders, three dispatchersrelay them to drivers. The fourth, a logistics manager, tracks the drivers’progress via a global positioning system on the giant screen.

“Truck 127 is at this location, going 25 miles an hour, northbound atthis latitude and longitude,” said General Manager Wes Taylor as hepointed to one of the icons. “There’s a GPS unit in every truck and thetrucks get pinged by the satellite every minute. The dispatchers can pullup tracking screens. They can also pull up a map to see all of the truckswithin a 100-mile radius.”

Taylor said the system can produce a “snail trail” that shows where thetrucks are, when they’re unloaded and how long they remain empty.

“Dump trucking is more complicated than over-the-road long haultrucking,” he said. “Products, pick-up locations and drop locations canchange with customer demands at any time. We want to deliver theproduct in the fastest and most efficient way. This is the most helpfulway to maximize profits as well as satisfy our customers.”

The system also helps drivers organize their time.

“We have almost zero deadhead,” Taylor said. “Once we drop a load, ascreen inside the cab displays the next dispatch. We can’t give them their

entire daily itinerary so they stay focused on their task. The schedule canchange, too. Ninety-nine percent of the time we deliver the same day. This is a workflow tool.”

Owner Gary Combs agreed. “The GPS station has brought a new levelof efficiency to the operation. As orders come in, the closest truck to theproduct is the one you dispatch. There’s no more calling trucks andasking ‘Where are you?’ It probably adds a minimum of 10 percent tothe bottom line.”

That efficiency has helped the Springdale-based business serve one of thehottest sections of the country, northwest Arkansas, home of the world’slargest retailer, Wal-Mart.® Since its founding in 1975 as Basic Construction, the company has grown from a single employee to more than 500 people.

Over the past 30 years, Combs has expanded to four divisions. BasicConstruction is involved with hotel, convention, single- and multi-familydevelopments. General Trucking hauls the company’s construction materialsto all job sites and road projects. Basic Block and the Mining Divisionround out the business units.

To achieve that growth, the Basic Group counts on both equipment andservice. The company runs 160 units, including more than 100 Mack®

Granite® dump trucks. Service plays a big part of that equation, Combssaid. “We’ve had great service from Shipley Motor Equipment Co. inLowell. I’m a personal friend of the dealer, Carl Shipley. If we have aproblem, they take care of it.”

The hardware is just as important. “If it’s a dump truck, it needs to be a Mack.”

“I am a hands-on bossman,” said Richardson, the president ofDonald Richardson & Son, a site work company based in Conway,South Carolina. “If a bulldozer has to be run, I’ll do whatever it takes. It shows the employees you can do it, too. They know if they ain’t doingit right, I’ll run their butt off that piece of equipment.”

Richardson has been getting the job done since he turned 16 and joinedhis father Donald in the family business. When his dad started the company45 years ago he landscaped yards by hauling dirt in a single Mack dumptruck. Since he bought the business in 1991, Richardson has expandedthe workforce from 5 to 25 employees and the fleet from 3 to 9 trucks. He now installs water, sewer and storm drains and subcontracts pavingfor developers and restaurants in Myrtle Beach.

The business has grown because Richardson isn’t afraid to hop on thatpiece of equipment. “Get the job done just as quick as you can and you’llhave work all of the time. That’s my motto.”

One example of that is the March 25 episode of “Extreme Makeover:Home Edition,” when Richardson bulldozed the run-down trailer of theWilson family of Longs, South Carolina, to make way for a new home.

“They needed help and the developer who I do a lot of work for approachedme,” he said. “I operated the equipment. We hauled in dirt and put rockin the driveway. I wore the blue shirt and the white hardhat like everybodyelse. Yes sir, it’s kind of amazing.”

To do that work Richardson relies on Mack® Trucks and his local salesman,Joey Boykin of Florence Truck Center in Florence, South Carolina. Thecompany’s nine Mack trucks consist of seven Granite® tri-axle models andtwo CH tractors. The Granite models sport a double frame, 18,000-lb.capacity front axles and 44,000-lb. capacity rear axles.

Boykin described the tractors as “dressed out” with dual exhausts andaluminum wheels. “If it’s chrome, Ricky’s got it all over his tractor.”

“I’ve been all Mack since the early 1980s because Mack has always beensuch a good truck,” Richardson said. “They are just real dependable. We’ve tried every brand there is nothing that tops a Mack.”

He also likes the dealer. “They are really good to me. They are the onlyones who touch the trucks.”

“Whether we are doing over-the-road transport or heavy cartage, Mackcan stand up to the abuse,” Smith said. “The cabs are superior. And thetrucks retain their value, if you spec them right and keep the mileage low.”

G.M. Smith Ltd. is an open-deck transport company hauling heavy, specialized and over-dimensional freight. Headquartered in Toronto, thecompany and its U.S. subsidiary State Motor Haulage Inc. transport cargoto and from all provinces, territories and states in Canada and the continentalUnited States. In addition, the company provides storage, cranes, rigging, logistics and mechanical services tailored to customer requirements.

Founded in 1957 by Warren Smith’s father Gerry with a single truck andtrailer, the company now operates an all-Mack fleet of more than 30 powerunits. Some 90 percent of those units are Vision™ tractors. Smith’s truckshave carried everything from large earthmoving equipment and heavyautomotive presses to oversized concrete beams and industrial equipment.

To bear those heavy loads, the tractors are spec’d with 14,000-lb. frontaxles, 46,000-lb. rear axles, 18-speed manual transmissions and 460 HPMack engines. The company’s trailer fleet is equipped to handle loadcapacities up to 350 tons.

Even the older rigs see action. G.M. Smith Ltd. has hauled loads of upto 400,000-lb. using a Super-Liner with a Mack E-9 - 8 cylinder engine.

In addition to building a successful transport company, Gerry Smithacquired one of the largest collections of antique Mack trucks in Canada.G.M. Smith’s collection of 25 vehicles includes a 1921 AC chain drivewith 1927 hard-tire Rogers® trailer, a 1927 chain drive AB rigging truck,a 1935 BM tractor, a 1947 LJ tractor, a 1947 LJSWX heavy-duty dumptruck and a 1954 B73LT tractor, to name a few.

Smith respects the power and durability of the product but likes theservice even more. “The people at Mack Canada and associated dealershave done a great job for us over the years. If you have a problem, youcan pick up the phone and they’re going to help you.”

The respect is mutual. “They are one of the finest and most honorablecustomers I have ever dealt with,” said Sean Whelan, sales manager atCambridge Mack in Cambridge, Ontario. “Warren Smith has the samevalues as his father and he is continuing the Mack tradition.”

Luckily his community and customers don’t mind. They actually lookforward to it.

The truck in question is a 1971 Mack® CF611F-1390 operated by thecity of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, for nearly 30 years before its retirement. The Nuss Truck Group restored the vehicle and added a barbeque grillthat slides from the back of the vehicle.

“We’ll go right to a customer’s shop and do a cookout for them,” saidNuss, the dealer principal. “Some people won’t take the time to cometo an open house but if you take the barbeque grill to a gravel pit ahundred guys will show up.”

The Nuss Group has used the fire truck for open houses at all six of itslocations in Minnesota and Wisconsin, special events like the Minnesotalogging show and Wisconsin dairy industry show and specializedcustomer events.

Last June, Eau Claire Mack & Volvo team members cooked for just suchan event sponsored by Schreck Trucking of West Salem, Wisconsin. Thatcompany held a charity function at the LaCrosse race track to supportthe Salvation Army, local food shelf and women’s shelter.

“All of our truck sales and outside parts sales group have individuallytaken the truck to a few customer locations each for a cookout,” Nusssaid. “We use a team approach, like volunteer firemen, to demonstrateour equipment and service.”

Nuss does other community work. For years his group has providedtractor and trailer transportation for the Rochester Community Bandduring the Rochesterfest Parade. It does other restoration work as well.

It recently brought back to life a 1951 LF tractor for Joe Becker, ownerof Becker Hi-Way Frate in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Becker is a chapterpresident of the American Truck Historical Society.

The current Mack restoration project is a 1939 FJ tractor that son Greg, vice president of operations, acquired two years ago. But most of theNuss Group efforts are spent showcasing the latest Mack vehicles.

Case in point: a new quad-axle Granite® purchased by McNeilus Steel, a family-owned company that stocks more than 3,500 different metalproducts, including hot and cold roll steel. The firm delivers more than a million pounds of steel each day with its fleet of 50 Mack trucks.

“It’s one of the nicest steel-hauling straight trucks running anywhere,”Nuss said of the recent sale. “They put a tarp over the steel. Going downthe road, it’s like a covered wagon.”

And then there’s the group’s bulk milk demonstration truck, a natural forthe dairy lands of Wisconsin. The 2007 Granite features the new MP7engine with a 6,000-gallon Walker stainless tank.

Which brings us back to fire trucks and food. Just what kind of grub dothe guys at gravel pits go for?

“They like hamburgers and a bratwurst,” Nuss said. “It’s just a fun deal.”

Putzmeister ® Buys 400th Mack ® ChassisSales are booming at Milwaukee Mack, where this member of theKriete Group just sold its 400th chassis in a year to its biggest customer,Putzmeister America.

“This is a milestone for Putzmeister and Milwaukee Mack,” saidsalesman Jim Lovering of the purchase by the U.S.-based subsidiary of Putzmeister AG.

Putzmeister manufactures a variety of concrete- and material-placingequipment for the construction industry including boom pumps to conveyconcrete to heights, telescopic belt conveyors for placing a variety ofmaterials from gravel to backfill at high volume and ultrahigh pressurewater cleaners.

The latest chassis is a Mack® TerraPro™ cabover concrete pumper, a tri-steer,tri-drive chassis spec’d with a MP8 460 HP engine and T318LR manualtransmission. It uses three standard Mack front axles that together cansupport 60,000 lbs.

Lovering delivers a bare chassis to Putzmeister in four configurations —three-, four-, six- and seven-axle models. The company then mounts eithera concrete pumper or a telescoping conveyor system called Telebelt® on thechassis. Telebelt can move concrete, gravel, rock and backfill in and out oftight spaces.

The 400th chassis will house a 61-meter concrete boom pump with avertical reach of 197 ft. Like all Putzmeister pumps, this four-section roll-and-fold unit features a free flow hydraulic system for smooth andcontrollable pumping. The units are used in everything from bridge tohigh-rise construction.

Lovering started selling the chassis to Putzmeister in 1994 and averagesbetween 250 and 400 units a year. He’s proud of that volume but he’smore impressed with the cooperation between his customer, hisdistributorship and Mack Trucks.

The dealer also relies heavily on Bill Heffentrager in Mack SalesEngineering; Vic Sherbrick at the Mack New Vehicle Option Center(NVOC) near the Macungie assembly plant; and Joe Billie, the Mackregional fleet service field representative who studied at the Putzmeistertechnical school for pumper operation and maintenance.

Without that daily assistance and expertise, he said, it would be extremelydifficult to give Putzmeister the service they require.

“No one person could service this account. Believe me, this is a team effort.”

Employees Built to Last at Colorado Mack

That’s Bill Kruger’s opinion after working with some staff members whohave served for 29 years. As parts manager with Colorado Mack Salesand Service in Denver, Kruger can speak directly to the qualifications ofhis four employees.

Loretta Primozich was hired in June 1985 as a parts driver and promotedto the parts counter in 1987. She helps to train new hires and is marriedto Sales Manager Tom Primozich, who has worked at the distributorshipsince 1980.

Aaron Mclucas started in October 1992 behind the parts counter andmoved to outside sales in 2000.

Steve Greenmyer was hired as a parts driver in October 1980, workedin Class 8 truck sales and moved to the parts counter in 1993.

Lynn Harnly was hired as a parts driver in 1978 and became partsmanager in 1990. After 12 years, he returned to the parts counter, where he works today.

“These four have seen more than 30 parts personnel and 6 parts managerscome and go over the past 29 years,” Kruger said. “They take pride intheir work because they know it makes a difference to the customer. They really listen to what the customers want. I think they all followthe golden rule in retail, ‘How would I like to be treated?’”

While Kruger is a relative newcomer to Colorado Mack — he’s workedthere as parts manager for 3 years — he has more than 11 years’experience under his belt. And that experience has taught him torecognize good service when he sees it.

“I have not seen another parts department that sticks together like thisone. Some dealerships have high turnover but not here. These peopleknow the product and know how to get along with customers andother employees.”

At Colorado Mack, the employees last almost as long as the trucks.

Akron Bookkeeper Never Tires of Trucks

After celebrating 50 years as a bookkeeper with Mack® Trucks distributorR & R Truck Sales in Akron, Ohio, Maxine Chapman retired. The 73-year-old Akron promptly cut her work hours to 32 a week.

“I get up at 5 a.m. every morning and I know I gotta get dressed andthat I’m needed,” she said at a retirement luncheon in her honor earlierthis year. “When I get up and this body says you can’t do that anymore, then I’ll quit.”

That attitude has kept her going since her days as one of nine siblingswho helped to run her family’s produce farm in West Virginia. Afterworking as a housekeeper and at a wholesale furniture company inCharleston, she married a shipping clerk by the name of SanfordChapman and followed her husband to Akron.

There she became an office clerk for the Mack Trucks branch on TriplettBoulevard. Everything worked well until 1976. At the time, Mack wasselling its factory stores to independent distributorships. When her ownbranch was slated to be closed, “I thought my life had ended,” she said.“Mack had a 30-years-and-out [retirement policy] and I had only[worked for] 20 years. I was looking forward to working 10 more yearsand retiring.”

But thanks to two brothers in Youngstown who decided to open theirown Mack branch in Akron, Maxine never lost a day of work. Even afterher husband died in 1999, she decided not to retire. “If I would havequit work, I’d probably be dead now or in a wheelchair.”

Her employer is glad she stayed.

“She’s from the old school, very dedicated, and I don’t have to follow upto see what she’s doing,” said George Ralich, the current owner. At age82, he understands Maxine’s sense of responsibility more than anyone.“It’s as if she owns the business.”

New MP8 Has Pull

F R O M T H E R O A D

Since completely rebuilding its engine line to meet EPA’07 requirements,Mack Trucks has been saying the MP8 has the power to handle the mostdemanding jobs. But it took a head-to-head test by Bruckner Truck Salesin Fort Worth, Texas, to back that claim with solid numbers from the field.

The test subject was a 2008 Pinnacle™ axle-forward tractor powered by anMP8 415C engine with a 13-speed Fuller® transmission and 11R24.5tires. It was hitched to a 3-axle trailer housing an oil field services pumpwith a combined weight of 97,000-lb.

The 13-liter MP8 is rated from 415–485 HP with torque levels from1,540 – 1,700-lb.-ft. As with the MP7, the MP8 is offered in theMack-distinct Maxidyne,® Econodyne® and MaxiCruise® performancefamilies. The test Pinnacle belonged to the latter family.

Competing against the Pinnacle was a Mack Vision™ tractor sporting aMaxiCruise 410 ASET™ AC. Its transmission and gearing were exactlythe same as the Pinnacle.

The customer was Frac Tech Services Ltd., a Cisco, Texas, based companythat provides stimulation services to oil drillers. The frac pump forceswater, sand and chemicals down the oil well to cut into, or fracture, the surrounding rock formation so natural gas and oil can flow upthrough the casing.

The goal of the test was to see how efficiently the Pinnacle’s MP8 couldhaul its load up Ranger Hill outside Fort Worth, according to Thomas Tenseth, salesman with Bruckner Truck Sales in Fort Worth. The hill offers achallenging 4-mile stretch at a 6 percent grade.

“This was the first MP8 truck with the diesel particulate filter (DPF)that we received,” Tenseth said. “Everything was identical to the trucksFrac Tech purchased from us last year. We wanted to see how the Pinnaclewould perform prior to delivering it to the customer. We decided tohook it to the trailer they normally pull — a heavy frac pump thatcatches a lot of air.”

The results, Tenseth said, were impressive. “We put the Pinnacle throughthe most torturous test you can get in this area. There were no faultsduring operation, no soot or anything for that matter on the inside ofthe stack. The lowest speed reached by the Pinnacle was 27 mph. TheASET™ model would go up at a maximum of 18 mph pulling the sameequipment. Now we’ve got verifiable information on MP8 performance.”

Frac Tech’s Maintenance Supervisor Danny Jones was also impressedwith that performance — and with the new interior of the Pinnacle cab.At 6' 6" and 210 lbs. he liked the new dash — as well as the extra 4 inchesof cab room.

Tenseth said the performance is impressive given the new pollutioncontrol equipment required to meet U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency regulations for 2007 emissions.

“The MP8’s power is much greater than previous engines. Even with thenew technology the engine is more powerful, and there is absolutely nosmoke coming out of that stack. Even our mechanics are excited aboutit. This is bound to be the strongest 13-liter engine produced.”

Mack ® has been saying its new MP8 engine has pull. This spring, a Texas distributor proved it.

In Montréal Good Trucks Make Good Neighbors

That’s what Stephane Berry discovered when he moved his business,Services Routiers Unipro Ltée, across the street from Montréal’s Mack®

distributorship Camions Montréal.

“Mr. Berry developed a new hobby: doing the Mack inventory yard checkevery time he had a chance,” said Claude Gravel, sales coordinator atCamions Montréal. “After the first visit, Camions Montréal’s ownerJohn Limbardi got to meet Mr. Berry and found out that the man hada serious need to adopt a Bulldog.”

That brought Mack salesman Fabien Lessard into discussions to finalizethe specifics needed to prepare a 2007 stock Granite® to receive a 50 tonNRC Industries’ heavy duty sliding wrecker unit. The Granite joinsmore than 20 units at Services Routiers Unipro Ltée that range fromlight-duty towing platforms to heavy-duty recovery units.

“This is Montréal’s first in a Granite application and it is raising eyebrowsin the towing community,” Gravel said. “It will surely bring additionaladoption from Montréal’s kennel.”

For some, the grass is always greener on the other side of the street. In Canada, the wrecker is always bigger.

Boral Bricks Delivers for Group HomeWhen an organization that builds group homes for people with mentaldisabilities won a grant from the government, its executive director waspleased. But not as thrilled as when a driver for Boral Bricks showed upwith a Mack truck loaded with hope.

“While the funding [from the U.S. Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment] is incredible, it’s not quite enough to build the house ofour dreams,” said Jerrie Paschal, who runs the Cobb Association forRetarded Citizens Inc. (Arc Cobb) in Cobb County, near Marietta, Georgia.“HUD expects that we will find community support for the projectthrough donations and contributions.”

Arc Cobb found that support in Boral Bricks, the largest producer ofresidential and clay bricks in the United States.

“We at Boral have been instrumental in donating and delivering bricksto some 12 assisted living homes in very nice neighborhoods that welcomeand embrace these unfortunate young and middle-aged souls and familiesinto their community,” said Dickson Lester, director of purchasing forBoral Bricks in Roswell, Georgia.

Arc Cobb runs the Arc Lighthouse in Mableton, a group home for peoplewith disabilities. The homes are specially designed to accommodate thehandicapped and are built with donations of materials and labor. Theyserve adult children with rare conditions and provide professional services24 hours a day.

“This has been one of my personal outreach projects over the past severalyears,” Lester said. “I met Jerrie Paschal at a bluegrass festival. She saidshe needed some bricks to build houses for the mentally challenged sothey could live on their own.”

The brick was delivered by driver Daryl Brown from Boral’s Carterville,Georgia, distribution yard.

“Our mission is to make this house a home that clients and neighborsalike will be proud of,” Paschal said. “A brick home is not in the HUDbudget but we really wanted the homes to fit into residential neighborhoodsand be low-maintenance. We are so pleased that Boral Industries has beena strong supporter of our program.”

Mrs. Jerrie Paschal, left, with driver Daryl Brown.

Jerry’s Kids Make-A-Wish

“I don’t know what came over me but when I saw the Make-A-Wish kids it tugged at my heartstring,” Kissinger said from his office at IndependentOperator Inc., a business he’s owned for the past 25 years in Cottage Grove,Wisconsin, outside Madison. “I know I have a future but these kids don’tknow what is around the corner. Their future is right now.”

To help make that future brighter, Kissinger bid $5,500 for the lead positionin the parade Waupun holds to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation,®

which grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. The next year he returned to Waupun with a check for $7,100 in fundshe’d raised from his employees and associates. He also bid $5,000 for thelead position and bought that and the third slot in a parade that features400 highly-buffed entries. In three years he’s raised more than $34,000for the foundation.

Kissinger had come prepared to compete: his Super-Liner sports a 100-inchbunk, 311-inch wheelbase, some 400 American SuperLite LED safety

lights and a V8 that generates more than 800 HP. The trailer’s graphicsdepict two horses charging past an American flag. But once again it wasthe Make-A-Wish children who stole the show.

“They brought those kids out there and we started talking to them,” hesaid. “Some of them have been dealt a bad hand. The only thing theyknow about life is pain and suffering. I talked to one kid with a false eyeand two heart operations and he’s only 6 years old. You don’t know iftomorrow they’re even going to be around. I didn’t know that thesechildren would have that much of an effect on me.”

Since then Kissinger has worked with several other charities, includingToys for Tots and the World’s Largest Truck Convoy, a one-day celebrationthat in 2006 helped raise more than $544,000 for Special Olympics.

A second-generation trucker, Kissinger spends his working hours haulingcheese for Green Bay-based Schreiber Foods. He bought his first Super-Linerin 1984 and has stuck with Mack® ever since. The company now has fiveMack models. His latest purchase is a Pinnacle™ with an Eaton® Fuller®

UltraShift 10-speed, a fully automated transmission and a sleeper. He buysall of his trucks from the Kriete Group in Madison.

His showcase 1991 Super-Liner was recently named Truck of the Monthat Chrome Shop Mafia/4 State Trucks of Joplin, Missouri, which sellsparts and paraphernalia.

Kissinger likes to show off his truck but says helping the Make-A-Wishchildren really makes him shine.

“That’s the biggest thing,” he said, “to put a smile on their faces.”

Truck or Treat in New JerseyLovers of historic Mack trucks got an extra treat at last fall’s Halloweenparade when the Petruzzelli brothers of Shrewsbury, New Jersey, showedup with a 1989 R model to pull the float.

The brothers, Dean and Nick, have been Mack fans for 30 years, eversince they founded their excavating business after graduating from highschool. They even have one of the first 1965 B67 model tandem tractorsthey bought.

“We’ve always been a Mack shop,” Dean Petruzzelli said. “We startedwith a B61 tractor and have six Mack trucks now.”

The parade was for the benefit of Red Bank (New Jersey) BoroughPublic Schools.

Jerry Kissinger came to the Waupun Truck-N-Show to display his 1991 Mack ® Super-Liner Thumper. Then he met a child who’d had two heart operations. The child was only 6 years old.

Low-speed Mack to the Rescue

Dear Editor,

One day last November, Certified Products Inc.in New Berlin, Wisconsin, a topsoil and mulchcompany, needed their screener moved toanother location on the property but did nothave a truck to pull it. I drive dump truck forthem, a 1993 Mack R-13 tri-axle, from aboutApril through December. So I brought my1959 B61 to work that day and it did a goodjob. My Mack is a little different than most.It was ordered with a Fuller® R69 low-speedRoad Ranger transmission.

I use my Mack for parades and car and truckshows where it has won some awards.

Big Plans for Big Truck

Dear Editor,

I bought my 2004 Granite® CL from my formeremployer. The truck has a AI-427 HP engine,T310M transmission and 4:64 Mack rears on44,000-lb. camelback suspension.

I am really into my trucks as you can probablytell and have made several changes and additionsto the truck to get the look I wanted. I amalmost done with this one. All I have left to dois a set of 6-inch stacks, some train horns andfour more cab lights to make it nine across thecab. I will probably put in some leather seatslater when the stockers wear out.

I have plenty to do on my new project, a 1984Super-Liner RWS 722 LST. I have got somebig plans for that one.

Promoting Global Trade

Dear Editor,

I am a big fan of the heavy trucks all over theworld made since the 1960s. I like very muchMack trucks. Although in my country thereare no Mack trucks registered except a 6x6model from World War II, a lot of them werecrossing through my city in the 1970s and1980s from as far away as Tehran in Iran andIstanbul in Turkey to ports in West Europesuch as Hamburg and Rotterdam.

I have a good collection of Mack truck photosfrom other countries such as France, Holland,Canada and Venezuela, where they are workingto date. I enclose a picture of an F 700STtractor from Tehran, Iran, taken myself in mycity in July 1993.

Boyhood Dreams Come True

Dear Editor,

Growing up the son of a trucker, being aroundbig rigs was a way of life for me. As a youngboy, I selected Mack as my favorite. At thetime, my father was not driving a Mack butmy love for the truck did not diminish. Mydad arranged for me to take a ride with oneof his buddies who drove a Mack. Boy, whata thrill that was.

In April 2006, my wife Laura and I werechauffeured from our wedding in a B model. The truck was driven by Rodney Mummertof Glen Rock, Pennsylvania. The truck had apassenger bench seat, which made the trippossible. Our family enjoys going to the truckshows each year. Dad is now semi-retired butstill drives a 2007 Vision.™

Boyhood dreams do come true.
