A city shrouded in monuments, historical relics, myths and legends that seem to appear whenever one crosses its streets, is a must stop for every visitor to Peru. A visit to this old city, nestled in the south-eastern Andes of Peru, at 3.360 metres above sea level, is an unforgettable experience that transmits some of the mystique surrounding the Incas. Cusco was earmarked the “navel” of the Andean world.

Machu Picchu Altitude: 2430m – 7,973ft Most people will agree that no matter how many times you have visited Machu Picchu, it will never seize to amaze you. Since it was discovered in 1911, Machu Picchu has been considered as one of the most important architectonic and archaeological monuments on the planet because of its incredible and naturally harmonious features. Until now there are many controversial theories about how and why it came to be. Whatever the case may be, the mystery surrounding Machu Picchu will only be understood once experienced personally. It is not surprising, therefore, that it is considered as one of the few man-made wonders of the world.

Sacred Valley of the Incas Altitude: 2,850mts- 9,350fts The Sacred Valley of the Incas was undoubtedly a key area of settlement to the Incas. Its agreeable climate and fertile plains make a rare and fruitful combination for the high Andes. It was also the route to the jungle and therefore an area with access to the fruits and plants of the tropical lowlands. The Sacred Valley served as a buffer zone, protecting Cusco from incursions of the Antis, the fierce jungle tribes who from time to time raided the highlands. Today the Sacred Valley remains a lush agricultural region supplying the city of Cusco with much of its produce such as maize, fruit and vegetables.
