Rube Goldberg (1884-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, best known for his nutty chain reaction inventions. The popularity of these cartoons made him a cultural

touchstone, an adjective in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, and a term that today is invoked daily in American media.

WHAT IS A RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE?

A Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM) is a crazy contraption which accomplishes a simple task in the most complicated – and funniest - way possible! Based on the “Invention” cartoons of the famous Pulitzer Prize-winning American cartoonist, Rube Goldberg, actual machines are at the heart of the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. They use everyday items (mostly junk!), they tell a story and, most important of all – they make you LAUGH.

But millions of tinkerers, makers, inventors, “mad” scientists, and DIY’ers make Rube Goldberg Machines all the time. They can’t help it! While they’re having fun creating kooky solutions to simple, everyday tasks they also happen to be incorporating elements of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (with Art and design thrown into the mix!). People who make Rube Goldberg Machines – whether for fun or to solve an actual task – are innately curious problem-solvers who often say, “I can fix that!”

The word “rube” has been now redefined as someone who loves to make Rube Goldberg Machines. Are you a “Rube”?

WHAT IS A RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE CONTEST?

A Rube Goldberg Machine Contest (RGMC) is an event where students of all ages compete with the machines they have imagined, designed and created in a fun and competitive forum. The competitions encourage teamwork and out-of-the-box problem solving, in a fresh learning environment and level playing field. Remember, to compete in a RGMC all you need is a good imagination and a pile of junk!

CONTEST OPPORTUNITIES

There are 2 types of contests:

n Live

n Online (no Host needed)

Any team, no matter what their location, may compete in either the Live or the Online contest. Teams may not compete in both. n A team may compete in only one Contest.

n A school/organization may register multiple teams, in multiple contests, each with a unique machine.

COST AND REGISTRATION

There are costs involved with forming a Rube Goldberg team.

n Registration fee for ALL CONTESTS is $395.00 per team payable directly to RGI. ($50 off, for team registrations received by January 1st, 2017!)

n There is a Finals fee of $395.00 to RGI for all Live teams attending Finals.

n Teams are encouraged to seek out local sponsors. In addition to registration fees, costs may include transportation of the machine and the team, food and overnight accommodations.

DIGITAL SCORING

For contest scoring and determination of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, Contest Hosts MUST have access to Microsoft Excel, or an iPad/Laptop that is capable of accessing the internet and rube@rubegoldberg.com during the contest.

THIS IS A STUDENT COMPETITION

n Only students may build the machine.

n Only students may set up the machine.

n Only students may touch the machine (e.g., do interventions, fix the machine, etc.) during the competition.

n People who are not on the team may help transport the machine.

Thank you for Hosting a Rube Goldberg Machine Contest®.

There is no fee to RGI to become a Host...but there are responsibilities in Hosting. Once you register as a Host, the 2017 Rule Book in its entirety is downloadable from your Host page. The Host will have sole responsibility for organizing and running their competition.

There are 3 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest divisions:

DIVISION I: Ages 11 – 14 Team Eligibility

DIVISION II: Ages 14 – 18 Team Eligibility

DIVISION III: Ages 18+ Team Eligibility

The key to a successful competition is communication. The Host Chairperson is responsible for:

• listing their contest

• recruiting teams

• community outreach (contest sponsorship)

• promoting and marketing your contest

• updating their Host Page

• communicating both with the Teams that register for their contest and with RGI

• running the contest, including judging, as prescribed in the Rule Book

All hosts register their contests on our web site and create a Host Page. (See how on page 8. ) There is no fee to become a Host.

Use your Host Page to:

• download the complete 2017 Rule Book

• access official art work and the Rube Goldberg logo

• access sample PR material and solicitation letters/emails for perspective sponsors and invitations to teams. We have also included a “How to Get Press Attention” and a sample Press Release.

• view and download all Team info - including Team Leader email, phone number, etc.

• update any contest changes - venue or time changes, snow date, contest cancellation, etc.

• to order trophies

• upload pics and videos of your competition.

• denote all contest winners: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams and Rube Goldberg Creative Spark, Spirit of Rube Goldberg and Rube Goldberg Teamwork Awards.

HOST 2017

For each team that attends a regional contest, RGI will remit $45.00 per team to the regional Host organization at the close of their contest. Once your contest completes, please email us (rube@rubegoldberg.com) and let us know how many teams attended. Include your Host name as it appears on your listing, the date of your contest, the number of teams and the name and address of the organization to which payment should be made.

Hosts may no longer charge an additional fee.

Hosts that pay for all or a portion of team fees, need to email rube@rubegoldberg with the number of teams they will underwrite and what portion of the fee they are covering for each team.

- RGI will invoice the Host for prepayment.

- Once the payment is received, your contest will be published so that Teams can register.

- Funds for teams that do not show up will be refunded to the Host organization once the contest completes.

Teams whose registration fees have been underwritten but do not participate in their regional competitions will be prohibited from participating in future contests for the next three years. Teams are defined as a specific combination of a teacher/ leader and school/organization.

All Hosts will receive a 2017 RGMC Host pin.

All organizations/schools of Teams that place 1st at a regional will receive a personalized digital banner to use on their web site or any digital material.

Judging is ALL NEW. There will be REFEREES and JUDGES. Please see page 7, 11 and 12 in this Host Manual and pages 20-27 in the Rule Book.

Scoring will be done digitally via an Excel spreadsheet or the Rube Goldberg website. At the competition, judges and referees will make notes but actual scoring will be done electronically. Please see page 7 for a brief of Judging and Scoring.

• For larger competitions, teams will be assigned into “pods” of no more than 9 teams.

• Teams and machines will be evaluated by two distinct sets of contest officials: Referees and Judges.

- REFEREES use specific criteria to quantitatively evaluate your machine.

- JUDGES use their personal judgement and point of view to evaluate your team and machine.

• Machines will be run once, reset, and run a second time for the referees.

• Machines will be run continuously throughout the remainder of the competition for the judges.

• There are 6 possible awards to win.

- 1ST, 2ND, & 3RD place will be weighted on 40% of the referees scores and 60% of the judges scores.

- RG CREATIVE SPARK - SPIRIT OF RG will be weighted on 100% of the judges scores - RG TEAMWORK

THE FOLLOWING 10 STEPS HIGHLIGHT HOST RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Choose a Competition Site Chairperson

Each Host site must have ONE Host Chairperson that will:

• register their contest on our web site and take care of posting information, photos and videos on their Host Page.

• be the contact person for RGI and for any teams that have questions about your host site

• familiarize themselves with the 2017 Rule Book (download available on the Host Page)

• running the contest, including judging, as prescribed in the Rule Book

• be responsible for marking all contest winners: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams and Rube Goldberg Creative Spark, Spirit of Rube Goldberg and Rube Goldberg Teamwork Awards.

2. Choose a Competition Site

The site should be a large open room or area that accommodates teams, machines, judges, audience and refreshments. Suggested sites for competitions: gymnasiums, ballrooms, science or children’s museums, convention halls, Armories, etc.

Suggested Guidelines: • Host will provide a table (approximately 27” high) or elevated palate for each team to accommodate the presentation of their machine. • Seating Area: Based on the maximum attendees allowed by the facility.

3. Pick a Date for your Competition

Regional competitions need to be held before Finals for their Division. All competitions need to be held between November 1st, 2016 and March 19th, 2017.

All Division Finals locations and dates will be announced in October 2016.

Dates will likely be late March or early April, 2017, over a weekend.

4. Register as a Host with RGI

Host registration opens August 2016.

All hosts register their own contests on our web site.

5. Fill out your Host Page completely. (Hosts need to fill out a Host Page for each Division they will Host. Be sure to include doors open and contest start times, site specific info in the Details section such as Load-in requirements: height/width of doorways, any stairs, elevator, etc

6. Once your Host listing is approved, it will appear on our web site.

(Once you set up an account, you can use that account to register as a Host and/or register a Team.)

TEAMS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REGISTER FOR YOUR CONTEST UNTIL THIS INFORMATION IS POSTED ON OUR SITE.

5. How to use your Host Page

From the drop down menu you may download the complete 2017 Rule Book, find marketing materials, sample PR material and sample solicitation letters/emails for perspective sponsors, team invitations, official contest artwork. (See #6. on page 10)

As teams register for your contest, you will be able to: • View and download info of each team by downloading the csv file at the top of the page. This info includes Team name, Team Leader name, email, phone number and address.

Use this info to reach out to your Teams and cheer them on. Remind them that they must complete their Team Page prior to their competition.* No videos or photos are required at that time.

• Update any contest changes - venue or time changes, snow date, contest cancellation, etc.

• Order trophies.

• Upload pics and videos of your competition.

• Denote all contest winners: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams and Rube Goldberg Creative Spark, Spirit of Rube Goldberg and Rube Goldberg Teamwork Awards.

*Rube is going digital! Online Teams have had the benefits for years. Now Live teams will have the same. The benefits of creating a Team Page are:

1. See your scoring and judges comments on your Team Page.

2. Put your Step List on your Page - no need for paper for refs and judges.

3. Put your Machine Volume Worksheet on your Page - no need for paper.

4. Your video will be up for the world to see–share your Team Page on your social media.

6. Get the Word Out About Your Competition

Publicity is the key to building a long term successful program. Once your Host registration is approved, log in to your Host Page where you will find the Marketing Materials for Hosts drop down menu which includes:

• Samples of PR material and solicitation letters/emails for perspective sponsors and invitations to teams. We have also included a “How to Get Press Attention” and an example of a Press Release.

• The 2017 Rule Book

• The following art work:

- Official Contest Poster

- The Rube Goldberg logo

- Badge Artwork

These may be used in any form: print, on the web, on clothing, banners, posters, etc

These materials are provided to you for use in marketing/advertising your contest.

Any materials developed by the Host should be forwarded to RGI for approval prior to distribution.

7. Fund Your Competition

• Use the sample Sponsorship letters in the drop down menu on your Host page to reach out to manufacturing and engineering companies, local businesses, local colleges, educational supply stores, etc. Get your community involved in supporting your RGMC.

• Expenses may include: - Facility Fees - Refreshments at competition - Awards / Prizes - Printing of Program Agenda

8. Recruit Judges and Referees for Your Competition

Teams and machines are now evaluated by two distinct sets of contest officials. Referees and Judges.

REFEREES are contest organizers, contest veterans, teachers, or engineers who fully understand the contest rules.

What they do: Referees use specific criteria to quantitatively evaluate your machine. Referees will score your machine at specified assigned times. At this assigned time, the team will introduce their machine, complete run #1, reset, and then complete run #2. The referees will evaluate the team & machine on the items found on the sample Referee Form on page 22 in the Rule Book.

JUDGES are industry engineers, sponsors, celebrities/local personalities, and contest veterans who team’s should work to impress based on their Team Spirit, Communication, and their Whimsical Machine.

What they do: Judges will walk the floor and pods freely while teams run their machine continuously for the audience and referees. The team’s job is to demonstrate to the Judges the items found on the judging form. The Judges use their personal judgement and point of view to evaluate your team and machine in the three judging categories. These categories and their explanations can be found on the Judging Form, page 24 in the Rule Book.

9. During the Contest

• Teams will be broken into “pods” of not more than 9 teams. Each pod will be evaluated by a group of at least (2) referees and at least three (3) judges.

• Each pod will operate in parallel to other pods for larger competitions containing two or more pods. This means that one team in each pod might run their machine at identical times.

• Teams will be assigned a time to compete. This is their time to shine for the referees who will be scoring both the team & machine.

• Prior to the teams’ scheduled time slot, teams are encouraged to continuously run their machines for the audience members and Judges. Judges will stop by at unassigned times to judge a team’s machine.

HOW THE JUDGING SYSTEM (POD) WORKS

Teams will be assigned into pods of not more than 9 teams. Round rankings (1st - 9th) will be determined based on the referee and judge scores.

For competitions with 9 or fewer teams, the top 3 ranked teams will be the top 3 winners of the competition.

For competitions with 10 - 18 teams, the top 3 ranked teams from each of the two pods will advance to a second round of judging, where a panel of judges will judge the round 2 teams again. The referee scores from round 1 will be used in round 2 final scoring. Then, the top 3 ranked teams in round 2 will be the top 3 winners of the competition.

NOTE: The judging and referee forms shown in the Rule Book are primarily for reference and to illustrate the computations involved in scoring. In a new development for the 2017 RGMG Competition, scoring will be done digitally via an Excel spreadsheet or online application. At the competition, judges and referees will insert values but actual scoring will be done electronically.

10. Hold Your Competition

• No competition will be held for any location with fewer than 3 entrants. Should a location have fewer than 3 teams, the Host should inform RGI and the location will be cancelled for that year.

• Mark your team spaces with a Team Name and Team Number sheet that judges and refs can clearly see. Print out page 14 for each team you have competing.

EVERY TEAM AUTOMATICALLY GETS A UNIQUE TEAM NUMBER WHEN THEY REGISTER IT IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THEIR TEAM PAGE.

• JUDGING is all new this year. Please see details in the 2017 Rule Book.

- This new judging format will insure that forms are completely filled in and that scores are added up correctly.

- Scoring will be done digitally via an Excel spreadsheet or online application. At the competition, judges and referees will make notes but actual scoring will be done electronically.

• Provide a designated room, with wi-fi and refreshments, for the judges and referees to evaluate teams and scores.

11.Trophies and Awards

Regionals:

Each host is required to purchase official Rube Goldberg trophies for the winners of the following categories:

- 1st, 2nd and 3rd place - Rube Goldberg Creative Spark Award - Spirit of Rube Goldberg Award - Rube Goldberg Teamwork Award

Trophy orders must be placed A MINIMUM of 30 days prior to your competition to ensure that you receive them in time for your contest.

To order trophies, go to your Host page and click Order Trophies. That link will take you to our Store. Click on the blue header of the listing to see a description. Add to your cart. Payment is via Paypal.

All trophies are plaques.The cost for all 6 trophies is $250.00 + $25.00 shipping and tax.International shipping will be quoted once trophies are ordered.

12. After Your Competition

• Please post photos and videos of your contest.

• Inform the winning team that they must register with the Finals Host and pay the $395 per team fee, on our web site. This should be done ASAP to secure their place at Finals.

• Encourage teams to post photos and videos on their Team Page.

• After the winners of a Regional are announced, teams advancing to Finals have to register for Finals and pay the $395.00 Finals fee at rubegoldberg.com.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL RGMC

1. Share details with teams ahead of time:

a. Load-in requirements: height/width of doorways, any stairs, where to park, etc.

b. Audience info: where student’s parents can enter, what time, etc.

c. Time line of the day.

d. Teams may not start breaking down their machines until awards are presented.

2. Example Timeline:

a. Setup night before: If your venue allows, a few hours of setup the night before helps make the competition go smoother. Share this time with your teams.

b. Setup morning of: Post the “doors open” setup time with teams and make sure to delineate an end time for setup. Eg. Doors open for setup to begin at 8am, Setup ends at 10am, Judging starts at 10:30am. About 2-4 hours works for setup. While teams are setting up, meet with the judges/ referees to go over the procedures and rules, then collect step lists.

c. Intro: Between setup and the beginning of judging is a good time to make welcoming announcements to your audience, such as review the order of events, boundaries for machines, etc.

d. Judging time: Generally, judges/referees need about 1 1/2 hours per POD (presuming there are 9 teams in a POD

e. Announce end of judging/time for awards: When judges are finished watching the machines, let the audience know what time the awards ceremony will be. Judges usually need at least a half hour to deliberate, more time if there are numerous teams.

f. Awards Ceremony: The awards ceremony does not need to be long, but a few words of congratulations from the event organizer or an MC is always nice. Then the speaker can read off the awards and hand out prizes. Don’t forget to leave time for group pictures!

g. Breakdown: Close the day with at least an hour of breakdown and load out time. Try to stagger the teams exits or have them use different exits.

3. Ideas for hosting a larger event, ie. STEM Fair or Engineering Expo

a. Tie in your RGMC to an event already taking place at your school/in your town: such as an art show, a concert, a street fair, science fair, etc.

b. Add to your event: To gain a larger audience or extend your event day, add a section to your event for a college recruitment area and invite engineering schools to have tables. And/or invite local engineering firms and businesses to display and talk about their current projects. Ask local Scout groups to host activities like Rube Goldberg Machine Speed Builds, or invite other STEM clubs to display their projects.
