Nobody likes war. But freedom-loving
people must ght them and win. Thats
been the mission o the U.S. Marine Corps
since 1775, when it was created by the Continental Con-
gress to execute amphibious assaults.
Combat has changed since then, and so has theCorps. Yet as the war on terrorism continues, the Ma-
rines arent just keeping pace with the techniques o
the modern battleeld. Theyre leading the way. Case in
point: The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.
Established in mid-2000, MCMAP (pronounced
mick-map) is a comprehensive close-combat system
that gives practitioners equal doses o ghting skill and
character development. Sound amiliar? It should. Most
traditional martial arts have similar goals. But MCMAP
skips the anare and olklore and cuts to the chase. With
Marine Corps martial arts, its literally do-or-die on 21st-
century battleelds.
MCMAP creates synergy among the mental, physi-
cal and character development o all United States Ma-
Deadly DisciplinesThe moves o the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program all into our ghting categories:
Rife and bayonet: Techniques include vertical and horizontal rife-butt strokes, xed-bayonetthrusts and slashes, and rearm-retention techniques.
Edged weapons: Students learn vertical slashes and thrusts, reverse slashes and thrusts, and knie
de-enses.
Weapons o opportunity: Training emphasizes blocks, ollow-ups against thrusts and improvised
weapons. (A standard-issue entrenching tool is the avorite improvised weapon o 2nd Lt. Beatriz
Yarrish, who is 5 eet tall and weighs 100 pounds but can wield one with deadly accuracy.)
Unarmed combat: The repertoire includes armbars, come-alongs, wrist locks, takedowns and
countermoves.

rines, explains Sgt. James Shadle, a martial arts instruc-
tor trainer at Camp Pendleton, Caliornia. The program
draws on our existing core values, leadership and war-
ghting training programs, and combines them with a
new weapons-based martial arts system. Our intent? To
develop every Marine into a ully capable warrior andto enhance the warrior ethos o our Corps. In short, MC-
MAP prepares all Marines or the challenges o modern
warare.
EAST MEETS WEST
Because MCMAP is rooted in the traditional martial
arts, Marines are amiliar with many o its components.
The traditional arts demand rigorous study, training and
discipline. MCMAP does, too. Ancient ghting systems
help practitioners subdue enemies quickly and eec-
tively. So does MCMAP. And traditional martial arts instill
honor, courage and commitment. Those are also top
MCMAP priorities.
There is a connection between the traditional mar-

tial arts and MCMAP, explains Capt. Arturo Her-
nandez, commanding ocer o Instructional Train-
ing Company at San Diegos Marine Corps Recruit
Depot. Every year, his unit teaches the program to
20,000 recruits and hundreds o Marines stationed
at the 388-acre base.MCMAP is composed o several ghting arts, in-
cluding judo, jujutsu, karate, kenpo, even boxing, he
continues. But we use only techniques that work on
the battleeld.
COMBAT READY
Like Hernandez, Sta Sgt. Eric James sees similari-
ties and dierences between MCMAP and the
traditional arts. A ormer drill instructor, James now
teaches at the Recruit Depot.
During combat, Marines have one overriding pri-
ority, and thats to kill the enemy not merely get
him o our backs, James says. We want to renderhim useless so he cant hurt anyone. Many civilian-
run martial arts schools teach students to tap out.
But against the enemy, we break it, choke him with
it, beat him with it, leave him or dead and keep go-
ing. It sounds brutal, but Marines train or combat.
Thats our job.
MCMAP works so well because its simple, says
Gunnery Sgt. Orlando Diaz, an instructor at Camp
Pendleton. He joined the Corps in 1981 and saw the

mbat. Here, James Shadle uses an aikido
mbar to control his oe. Ater securing
e technique, he has three options: hold
e other man stationary until help arrives,
ove him in a specifed direction or break
elbow.
Many o the techniques that mak
the Marine Corps Martial Arts Prog
are indistinguishable rom those o
traditional Asian arts. Here, a Ma

program implemented. It ts all skill levels and is kept
simple because in the heat o combat, youre tired and
need to overcome opponents quickly, Diaz adds.
TRADITION OF INNOVATION
Line training ormerly prepared Marines or hand-to-
hand combat. They periodically assembled in ormation
to practice basic techniques. But as the 21st century
dawned, Gen. James L. Jones, commandant o the Ma-
rine Corps, visualized something better.
When Character CountsThree core values are crucial to the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and to the Corps itsel. Theyre
vital to every Marines physical, mental and moral development.
Honor: For Marines, this means honesty, integrity, respect, accountability and trust. Its a tall order,
but it is one that more than 200,000 Marines ll daily thanks largely to the MCMAP.
Courage: It includes mental, moral and physical strength. It helps Marines do whats right no matter
the circumstances. And it helps them deeat the enemy wherever hes ound. MCMAP cultivates
courage.
Commitment: It breeds proessionalism, discipline, pride and mastery o the arts o war. Without
commitment, there would be no MCMAP and no Marine Corps.

Recruit Depot in San
Diego, a drill instructor

punch with maximum
orce during the combat
conditioning exercise.
Highly trained warriors ... are not enough to ensure
victory on tomorrows battleelds, writes Jones, the 32nd
general to command the Corps. Marines need fexible
and robust weapons platorms and equipment, as well
as an organizational structure that supports operational
concepts designed or uture threats and mission require-
ments. Consequently, the Corps has earned great divi-
dends rom its institutional tradition o innovation.
This tradition is a driving orce behind MCMAP, says
Sta Sgt. Ernest Cardenas, an instructor trainer at the

Recruit Depot. The commandant wants Marines to be
known as erce ghters. He realized that i we earn black
belts, the rest o the world will see us as a orce ready to
deend itsel, whether with weapons or hand to hand.
MCMAP was developed so we could train and ght hard,
even when tired. The moves are simple and easy to re-
member, but very eective.
Sta Sgt. Rodney Mitchell, a ormer close-combat
instructor, believes MCMAP is a huge improvement
over line training, which he used to teach. We taught
chokes and throws that dated to World War II, he says.
Being on the ground
under the enemy is a real
possibility or Marines.
These men at the Marine
Corps Recruit Depot are
training ull contact or
such an eventuality.
They worked, but this is much better. It includes mul-
tiple techniques so Marines can enter any situation and
whup it on.
BOOT-CAMP BASICS
Until MCMAP, only select Marines like Mitchell were
thoroughly taught the martial arts. But now everyone re-
ceives such training. Boot-camp graduates in San Diego
and Parris Island, South Carolina, have earned their tan
belts, which is MCMAPs initial rank. So have newly com-
missioned ocers.
Most Marine hand-
to-hand combat
ends on the ground.
Consequently,
MCMAP emphasizes
grappling techniques
such as this secured
wrist-lock pin.

The combat conditioning exercise (CCX) is the re-
cruits ultimate martial arts challenge. It is taught on an
oval course near the bases sprawling physical-training
eld. Most people ght best when resh, so the real chal-
lenge or them becomes deeating the enemy when
theyre hungry, sleepy or physically exhausted. The CCXtests this ability using stations or knee strikes, sparring,
breakalls, body drags and other close-combat tasks.
Ater boot camp, all Marines are schooled in a military
occupational specialty such as inantry, intelligence, mo-
tor transport or operational communications. They seek
higher MCMAP belt ranks at the same time. When they ar-
rive at their feet assignments, they train in MCMAP within
their units, which have their own martial arts instructors.
They receive ree training throughout their careers.
Sgt. Josh Erlien, a MCMAP instructor and counter-
measures technician, is inspired by the programs high
standards. It is evolving, he says, and as better ghting
techniques become available, they are incorporated into
the program.
EVERYTHING MARINEAlthough MCMAP is new, its here to stay. In act, its
already a pillar o Marine Corps training.
Marines are advertised to be warriors who are capa-
ble o deending the nation, the Corps and each other,
writes Lt. Col. G.H. Bristol, director o the Marine Corps
Martial Arts Center or Excellence in Quantico, Virginia,
the programs headquarters. MCMAP gives [us] the
mental, character and physical disciplines to be what we
are advertised to be.
MCMAP draws rom the Western martial art o boxing, as well as rom the Eastern arts. Instructor trainer Ernest Cardenas
corrects a Marines arm position during a right-hand hook punch.
