The Memorial Rose Garden
The Rose Garden looked a picture for Remembrance
Day this year. There was an additional bed, ready for
the dedication of seven roses and, if Peter Cundall, for-
mer presenter of Gardening Australia, had been there he
would have declared it “Blooming marvellous”.
It became obvious last year that an extra rose bed
was required so a grant was applied for and received
from the State Government.
Their Restoring Community War Memorial Grants
Program provided the funding needed to construct the
new garden bed. Brendan Gay was contracted to do
the work but the weather held up the work for some
time. Brendan had promised to have it ready in time for
Remembrance Day so as soon as he had a few days of
fine weather forecast he set to and completed the job.
Thank you to Brendan for a job well done.
The Rose Garden is kept looking good thanks to a
dedicated group of people. Pruning is done by Moyne
Shire gardener Gerald. No easy feat given the large
number of roses. Take a walk through the garden and
you will see what a great job he does. The roses bloom
right on cue for Remembrance Day and this year looked
absolutely stunning.
Cheryl Hill and her trusty group of helpers look after
the general maintenance, weeding and dead heading to
keep the area looking good. This has been a labour of
love for many years and their efforts are much appreci-
ated.
Joe Mooney can be seen accompanied by his faithful
four legged friend (and works supervisor) mowing the
area around the War Memorial and Rose Garden on a
regular basis. The grass is never allowed to get out of
hand.
Last but not least is Bernie Warren who helps out when
and where help is needed. Thank you and a big “well
done” to all of you and anyone else who has or does
help to keep this area looking so good. It is a credit to
you all.

Parks Victoria Update
I am very pleased with the amount of work that
has been happening at Mount Eccles and Mount
Napier recently to prepare for the fire season. The
major work that has been undertaken is the spraying
of tracks that were the subject of discussion with the
local CFA and agreed to be sprayed every year by
DEPI prior to the fire season. The traditional owners
also provide some funding for the Budj Bim bike
trail at Mount Eccles to be sprayed annually and this
has just recently been completed. The end result is
that a majority of tracks in the park have been
sprayed. Slashing of Dunmore Road and some other
private property boundary tracks in the south of the
park is also planned. Mount Napier will also have
some of its tracks sprayed and the usual track clear-
ing of other tracks there will occur soon.
The traditional owners have also been busy with
land management on their land that borders Mount
Eccles; they recently had several small aircraft drops
of spray on their land to deal with the variegated this-
tle infestations, it was pleasing to see some of these
large thistles looking very sick when I patrolled out
near Lake Condah recently.
The two project fire fighters commenced at
Mount Eccles in late October, they are both returnees
from last season, Daniel Howard-Jones and Colin
Harrop, apart from fire season preparation works
they have attended a few burns and have been good
value with walking track and campground works.
Doug has been on the job with a few loads of gravel
and assisting with his loader to replace a couple of
BBQs, he loves a cuppa and a chat at the office and
will eat the biscuit tin dry if I don’t keep an eye on
him !!! I have also been very fortunate to have some
extra dollars to employ a casual for seven weeks to
help with pest plants; Hayden Banks who worked as
a project fire-fighter at Eccles last season has been
busy spraying and hand pulling weeds.
The community service workers have been to Eccles
a few times in the past month or so and have been
hard at it cutting back walking tracks.
I am looking to take a couple of weeks off just
prior to Christmas and will be back a couple of days
before Christmas and working over the break. On
behalf of Parks Victoria I would like to wish the
community a happy and safe Christmas.

Fundraising Auction
a Huge Success
The Breakaway Creek/Knebsworth Social Club has
outdone itself with the success of the major fundrais-
ing event it held this year, generating necessary funds
to ensure the continued usage of the local hall for
social activities.
On Saturday 19th October an auction of donated goods
and services was held at the hall and attended by a
strong crowd of both locals and people from outside
the district. The evening started with a pot luck dinner
with the catering up to usual standard of high class
country cuisine. Following dinner, the auction was to
start and thirty six registered bidders ready and wait-
ing.
The 70 lots to go under the hammer were all donated
goods and services which locals had sought out to
have donated to this cause. There was something for
everyone, ranging from store vouchers to bags and
hats; assorted containers of engine oils to garden
ornaments; cheese and wine hampers to truck loads of
crushed bluestone roading chip; buckets of laundry
powder to a heap of cut firewood. There were also
items of tasty country baking such as jars of yoyos,
packs of sausage rolls, plum puddings and powder
puffs. Two local plumbers also donated two hours of
their time to be auctioned off and these services were
hotly contested. Aaron Malseed of Elders was the
auctioneer for the evening, keeping the crowd both
entertained and bidding hands working furiously to
secure the lot they wanted. Neighbour bid against
neighbour, friend against friend, until the top price
could be achieved for each lot.

A highlight of the evening was the bidding war
between Margaret and Brenda, friends for 50 years
or more, battling it out over lot number 60. Who
knew a chicken garden ornament would be in such
demand!
The auction finished well, all lots off to new homes
and the buyers happy with their new purchases.
The evening raised $4139 in total, of which the
hall committee will keep $3639 to maintain the
hall and fund future social events. A further $500
raised from the evening has been donated to
Peter’s Project to help in the funding of an
Integrated cancer centre here in the south west.
The Breakaway Creek/Knebsworth Social Com-
mittee would like to sincerely thank all those who
contributed to this event which was a very success-
ful fundraiser. We would like to acknowledge the
