PDHPE Faculty
New PDHPE Syllabus Implementation in 2019
and 2020
The new PDHPE syllabus has been implemented
for Year 7 and Year 9 this year. Years 8 and 10
will be implemented in 2020. The new syllabus
focuses on providing students with opportunities
to enhance their own and others’ health, safety,
wellbeing and participation in physical activity.
Students develop self-management,
interpersonal and movement skills to become
empowered, self-confident and socially
responsible citizens.
Year 11 Life Ready
Life Ready is a mandatory 25-hour course
designed to prepare and support senior students
as they encounter situations related to health and
safety as they become more independent and
gain more responsibilities. It focuses on offering
opportunities for students to build the functional
knowledge and skills for life post school.
The content of the Macquarie Fields High School
Life Ready program is based on the needs and
interests of students. This means that students
are engaged in a program that is relevant to this
cohort of Year 11 students.
This program will run during Week 10, Term 3. It
will include workshops, guest speakers and year
meetings. Life Ready is divided into six relevant
and contemporary learning contexts including
Independence, Respectful Relationships, Safe
Travel, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sexuality
and Sexual Health, and Drugs and Alcohol.
Year 10 Road Safety bStreetsmart Excursion
On Tuesday 10 September, 2019, Year 10
attended the annual bstreetsmart Road Safety
Forum at Qudos Bank Arena at Homebush, an
initiative of the Trauma Service at Westmead
Hospital. The purpose of bstreetsmart is to
reduce the fatality and injury rates of young
people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers,
riders and passengers. The students engaged
with interactive and real life road safety scenarios
among approximately 5,000 other students from
all over NSW.
NSW Premier's Secondary School Sport
Challenge 2019
The NSW Premier's Secondary School Sport

and physical activity and encourages them to
lead healthy, active lifestyles.
At Macquarie Fields High School, all Year 7 and
Year 8 students are participating in class teams
in a 10 week sport and physical activity

challenge. Students in the elective Year 9 and 10
PASS classes, have been leading the challenge
as part of the Event Management unit.
The Challenge is designed to encourage and
engage students and staff in a 10 week program
of sport and physical activity. Participants are
challenged to accumulate time in physical
activity, aiming to achieve Bronze, Silver, Gold or
Diamond Awards at the conclusion of the
Challenge period. Students were provided with a
log book to record their physical activity levels.
To achieve a Premier's School Sporting
Challenge Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond
Award, teams must accrue the following average
time in sport and physical activity over a 10 week
period:
Awards Daily average activity time per student
Average time in minutes per week
per student
Bronze 30 minutes per day
210
Silver 45 minutes per day
315
Gold 60 minutes per day
420
Diamond 80 minutes per day
560
Any physical activity of moderate to vigorous
intensity can be used to accrue time for the
Challenge.
Moderate activities can be as simple as brisk
walking, bike riding with friends, skateboarding,
yoga and dancing.
Vigorous activities are usually associated with
activities such as football, netball, aerobics,
soccer, running, fitness circuits, swimming laps
and training for sport.
Opportunities for moderate to vigorous activity
are also provided by:
incidental activity
playground games
organised sport competitions and physical
education activities
outdoor adventure and physical recreation
programs
dance associated with the Performing
Arts.
Good luck to everyone participating in the
2019 Challenge!
Love Your Body Week is Butterfly's national
awareness campaign supported by Sportsgirl

Ultimate Frisbee
At Macquarie Fields High School, Ultimate
Frisbee has seen an increase in student interest
and has become an exceedingly evolving sport
within our school. Ultimate Frisbee is an
unconventional sport with unique opportunities
for students, such as, competing in the South
West Ultimate Frisbee Championships and
trialling for the NSW State Ultimate team. This
year, not only was our school proud to announce
that one of our very own Year 10 students had
successfully made it into the NSW State Ultimate
Frisbee team, but also that, a group of our Year 8
students had the opportunity to travel to
Rushcutters Bay Park to participate in the Youth
Ultimate League for the very first time in our
school’s history. The Youth Ultimate League
provided our students with the opportunity to
train with and learn from the best in the league,
including current and former Australian team
representatives. Our students represented our
school with great dignity and maturity as they
were held with high regard from both the Youth
Ultimate League organiser as well as all the
trainers. We cannot wait for our students to
participate in the Junior South West Ultimate
Frisbee Championships in November. With their
new found skills and enthusiasm for the sport,
they are sure to make our school and community
proud.
Year 11 SLR Go Karting
As part of the teaching and learning program at
Macquarie Fields High School, Year 11 SLR
students had the opportunity of participating in
the Go Karting Driver Awareness Program. On
Tuesday the 13th of August Students from the 1
unit and 2 unit SLR classes were accompanied
by Miss Worthington and Mrs Buxton to the Go
Karting centre at Minto. It was a fantastic day
which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The day
consisted of numerous sessions around the
course, at first there was some hesitation but by
the time everyone got to their second session the
safe competition had kicked in. The aim of this
excursion was to provide students with the
opportunity to participate in practical driving
courses. Students learnt about navigating
courses, passing and being overtaken,
maintaining proper speed and keeping a safe
distance from other karts on the track. Once
again, this was a fantastic day out for all
involved'.

Girls 9’s Wests tournament
On Wednesday June 19th, Wests Tigers Rugby
League held the annual Secondary Girls League
tournament at Eschol Park Sporting Complex,
Eschol Park. Macquarie Fields High School had
a strong showing of 2 teams for the under 14’s
and under 16’s. The tournament was a great day
with some fantastic results across the two age
groups. The under 16’s girls team just fell short
of making the finals, however, the under 14’s
girls showed strong teamwork and energy to
finish second overall in the Wests region. A
fantastic effort from all girls with plenty of talent
to develop for upcoming tournaments.

Under 16’s Rugby League
On Wednesday 26th June, 2019, Macquarie
Fields High School were invited to participate in
the Secondary All Schools Tigers Cup at Eschol
Park. The team demonstrated excellent
enthusiasm in the lead up to the competition by
training several times a week in preparation for a
tough competition. The team was eager to wear
the new rugby league jerseys that were
purchased earlier in the year.
In the opening rounds, the team had strong
performances against Lurnea HS and Mount
Annan HS. They unfortunately went down to the
competition leaders Elderslie HS who went on to
win the competition, which was arguably the
toughest and closest match of the day. All the
students displayed excellent sportsmanship and
represented the school impeccably.
The team were invited to compete in the NSWRL
All Schools Cup as the Wests/Macarthur
representative team. However, due to
unforeseen circumstances they were not able to
attend the event.
‘Leadership, it’s not rocket science!’ Selected students from Years 7 to 8 were invited
to attend the ‘Leadership, it’s not rocket science!’
excursion held by the GWS Giants in conjunction
with Western Sydney University. The day was
held at the Giants Headquarters/training facility
at Sydney Olympic Park.
On the day we were split into year groups. My
group started off with the physical component of
the day. We had five different activities that
tested our physical abilities. The vertical jump
test which tested how high you could jump off the
ground was a crowd favourite, as was the
spirometer peak flow test which measured how
much air our lungs can inhale and exhale.
All of the activities were scientifically tested and
are the same that GWS players also undertake
when testing their abilities.
The groups swapped over and we were given a
tour of the GWS headquarters. We were shown
the roles people have in the day to day running
of an AFL club. We were lucky to be shown the
state of the art gym that the players use for
fitness training and rehabilitation from an injury.
At the end of the day, both groups came back
together and were shown a presentation on
inspirational people.

LAWN BOWLS LAUNCHED AT MAC FIELDS
HS
That’s right you read it correctly – Macquarie
Fields High School entered the Sydney South
West Knockout Lawn Bowls competition for the
first time in their history. We not only entered 1
team but two in the competition.
Mr Luc and I took a keen group of year 10 boys
down to the Ingleburn bowls club for trials, as we
had too many players for the 2 teams of three.
After some tough competition (and a few
wayward bowls that went across to the next
green – a few of the boys got the bias on the
wrong side) we selected a team who got some
vital practise before the big day.
I then took the boys to the event that was held at
a massive lawn bowls venue at Saint John’s Park
(pic 1 below). The boys represented the school
with pride, passion and great sportsmanship and
they got lunch provided for them (so they were
happy). One of the teams made it through to the
finals the following week but unfortunately they
could not attend the day because of other school
commitments – what could have been!!
Thanks to Mr Luc for helping me provide this
unique opportunity for our students.

Year 7 Gala Day 2019
On Friday 9 August, 2019, five competitive
schools battled it out in various sports to see who
would be crowned Gala Day champions for 2019.
The day brought us some wild and windy
weather, however, that did not stop our students
participating enthusiastically. The Year 7 Gala
Day was successfully organised and hosted by
Ingleburn High School.
Macquarie Fields, Holsworthy, Casula, Hurlstone
and Ingleburn participated in Touch Football at
Milton Rugby League Park, T-Ball at Milton
Softball Complex, Ultimate Frisbee at Bob
Prenter Reserve and Soccer and Netball at
Coronation Park. Students from all schools
thoroughly enjoyed themselves, showing
excellent sportsmanship and exemplary
behaviour across all sports. Some great results
from our Year 7 teams. Hopefully next year we
can win the title and be crowned ‘champions’.
A huge thank you to the following teachers for
their wonderful assistance; Mr Day, Ms Tangerli,
Mr Luc, Mr Wood, Miss Bell, Miss Er, Ms
Davidson, Mr Robertson, Ms Wano
The Year 8 Gala Day is scheduled for
Tuesday 24 September, 2019 (Week 10A).

Creative and Performing Arts Faculty
The CAPA faculty in 2019 consists of Mrs
Davidson (Visual Arts), Ms Langley (Visual Arts),
Miss Tran (Music), Mr Bozzetto (Music) Head
Teacher Mrs Metcalfe (Visual Arts & Dance)
Deputy Principal Mrs Costa (Music). We also
have had the privilege of having
Paraprofessional Mrs Aprea (Visual Arts &
Graphics) working with us for the past two terms
and Miss Shakespeare helping out with Dance
Ensemble.
In Term 3 our Year 12 students have devoted
many hours completing their Body of Works in
Visual Arts and for our Music students rehearsing
and refining their performance pieces in
preparation for their Higher School Certificate
Examinations to be held in September. Students
have had the opportunity to take part in extra
Music practice sessions and Visual Arts
workshops both before and after school. We
thank both Mr Bozzetto and Mrs Davidson for
their support and dedication to these students.
This time of year for our year 12 Creative and
Performing Arts students can be a little stressful
as deadlines approach for our practical subjects,
but with the enormous amount of encouragement
and support these students have been given
everything has been going along nicely and we
are on track.
Our Senior Showcase evening, held back in
August displayed fine examples of students’ hard
work and passion for our practical subjects. This
year the CAPA faculty joined forces with the
Technologies faculty and displayed works from
our Graphics, Woodwork, Visual Arts and Music
students. The night was a wonderful success.
Students in these key learning areas have spent
hours of time, researching, experimenting,
sketching, building, practising and refining their
skills. It was a wonderful celebration. It was
marvellous to see so many parents, family and
friends attend as parents have travelled along
this journey with their children and have seen the
effort and dedication along the way. It was great
to see the relief and the smiles on students’
faces as they moved around and proudly showed
off their works and confidently performed their
musical pieces. We wish all our students the best
for their upcoming examinations and the future.
Dust of your disco shoes, get ready to move and
groove! We are extremely excited to announce
we will be holding our very first dinner and show
concert to be held in our school hall on Friday 6th
December. This is a new concept and all of the
dedicated CAPA staff along with the help of Miss
Shakespeare, Mrs Gonzales and Ms Lawson
have been working behind the scenes since early
in the year to create our 70’s Super Show. The
night will involve, Prizes, Fancy dress, dinner,
dancing and performances by our talented Music
and Dance students.
Dance ensemble students from year 7- 10 have
been rehearsing every Tuesday under the
guidance of Mrs Metcalfe and Miss
Shakespeare. Miss Shakespeare and Mrs
Metcalfe have been busting out their disco
moves and have choreographed two dynamic
disco numbers. We are sure some of you will
dancing in your seats when you hear the
following songs Boogie Wonderland, Disco
Inferno and September.
Page 13
October 2019
Issue 5- Term 4 October 2014
Year 9 and 10 elective dance will also be
performing. They have been working on
Contemporary and Disco Jazz dances in their
classes.
During recess on Mondays’ our Contemporary
dance ensemble which consists of students in
year 7, year 9 and year 12 have been
rehearsing a beautiful piece choreographed by
Mrs Metcalfe and written by Elton John called
‘Your Song’.
Our rock bands have been pumping out groovy
riffs and are gearing up to a spectacular finale
item under the guidance of the music guru Mr
Bozzetto.
Mrs Davidson, Mr Bozzetto, Miss Tran have
been rehearsing every Wednesday morning with
our 40 plus piece orchestra and strings
ensemble. All members are getting ready to
impress you with the amazing sounds of the 70’s.
All of these amazing extra-curricular groups are a
fabulous way each week for our students to
socialise, to form strong connections with staff
and students, to build skills, to enhance their own
focus and self-discipline as well as a place to
express their creative talents! We really are
looking forward to presenting this amazing show
to you. It is the perfect opportunity to showcase
the talents of our Creative and Performing Arts
Students as well as giving our inspirational
Principal Mrs Dolstra an amazing musical send
off for her retirement. Tickets for the show will be
on sale through our school administration office
next term. The cost including dinner, which
includes a delicious antipasto platter for each
table and dessert is $40. Seats are limited for
this event, so organise your table of 8 and get in
quick. You don’t want to miss this amazing show!
CAPA Excursions & Opportunities Update
We have been out and about on a variety of
excursions to date! It is a case of where haven’t
we been in 2019. Excursions in our faculty are
always valuable, authentic and often a hands on
experience for our students. Students have made
strong connections to the real world.
Early in the year Mrs Davidson and Mrs Metcalfe
took a group of 50 students to Fox Studios to see
the recording of the show ‘This time next year’.
This was a fun experience for all students to see
what happens behind the television screen.
Students were taken on a behind the scenes tour
and shown the editing and sound suites. Some
students were a touch star struck, when they met
host of the show Karl Stefanovic. All in all it was
a long day but great experience.
Mrs Davidson and Mrs Metcalfe took year 11 and
year 12 Visual Arts to the Hurstville Museum and
Gallery back in April. Museum and Gallery
curator Renee Porter spoke to the students
about the amazing art exhibition called Beyond
the Bowl. Renee enhanced the students’
knowledge of specific tasks and processes,
which happen behind the scenes when curating
the show. The exhibition displayed works from
Page 14
October 2019
Issue 5- Term 4 October 2014
both national and international artists, 5 of whom
work with clay and 5 who work in glass. The
exhibition demonstrated to students how the
mediums of glass and clay are manipulated and
pushed beyond the imagination. Thank you Mrs
Davidson for organising this enjoyable day!
Mrs Aprea and Mrs Metcalfe took Year 11 Visual
Arts students to visit the Art Gallery of NSW and
to the University of New South Wales Galleries
on the UNSW campus in Paddington. The day
involved lots of walking. We all had a bit of a
workout tackling the hills from the Art gallery of
NSW to the Paddington Campus of UNSW. At
the Art Gallery of NSW students viewed in the
flesh the famous works of Picasso, Monet, Olley,
Preston, Whiteley, Olsen, Smart, just to name a
few.
Many of our students had not previously visited
The Art Gallery of New South Wales before, so
this was a great day out. It was also a very
special visit as the students in year 11 visual arts
were able see their class mate Aysha Huq’s
Young Archie portrait hung in the Art Gallery of
New South Wales. Aysha and her class mates
had their photo taken next to her work. It’s not
every day you to get to stand with your peers and
proudly experience your work up on display!
After our hike from the Art Gallery of NSW to the
UNSW Galleries, students were given a tour of
the gallery space by the gallery public
engagements and events officer Julia Mendel.
We then viewed two contemporary art
exhibitions. Material Place: Reconsidering
Australian Landscapes displayed the works of 12
young artists who present artworks and
installations with various subject matter including
land rights to environmental degradation. The
other exhibition, ‘Art should make life more
interesting then art’ by artist Debra Porch was a
quirky look into her childhood and explored the
potency of memory and it’s ability to transform
the ordinary into the extra ordinary. The Year 11
students found both of these exhibitions valuable
and helpful in terms of class content and talking
about the conceptual framework. A big thank you
to Mrs Aprea for organising the UNSW
component of this excursion.

Issue 5- Term 4 October 2014
Dance Ensemble and Stage 5 Dance elective
were taken out to see the State Dance Festival
held at the Seymour Centre in Chippendale.
Students cheered on Year 10 Dance elective
student Braithan Kemble as he performed with
the NSW Aboriginal Secondary Dance
Ensemble. Our dancers enjoyed watching a
variety of dance styles including, Hip Hop,
Contemporary, Jazz and Classical Ballet. Our
aim of the excursion was to inspire and
encourage our dance students to get involved in
performing on stage. As a dance student it is
sometimes confronting to get up in front of an
audience. You are on show for all the world to
Page 16
October 2019
Issue 5- Term 4 October 2014
see and it takes courage and passion. Miss
Shakespeare and Mrs Metcalfe believe our
students are on the right path to display their own
courage and passion. We hope to take part in a
couple of dance festivals next year! Many thanks
to Miss Shakespeare for organising this
excursion.
Year 8 Visual Arts Gifted and Talented students
were going on an excursion the Campbelltown
Art Gallery in week 9. Students were to
participate in ‘En Plien Air’ painting workshops
within the Japanese inspired gardens.
Unfortunately this excursion was postponed due
to the wet weather. Mrs Metcalfe had also
organised this visit to see the showcase of
Indigenous Fijian Heritage called Marama Dina
on display at the gallery and experience a gallery
led talk and discussion along with specific theory
activities in response to the artworks. Sadly the
rain stopped this excursion from going ahead
and the students missed out on this learning
opportunity. But need the rain and these things
are set to try us! Stay tuned for a new note to go
home in term 3. As they say third time’s a charm.
Fingers crossed we will try again!
Characterising Creatures Sydney Sympthony
Orchestra
Music makes the world go round. It is part of our
every day lives and enriches humans in all parts
of the world. Miss Tran, Mr Bozzetto and Ms
Langley took year 8 to see Characterising
Creatures performance by the Sydney
Symphony Orchestra at the Seymour Centre.
Music often triggers our imaginations and this
menagerie of music sure inspired our students.
This excursion had strong links to our stage 4
and 5 programs and students were introduced to
composers Henri Mancini, Australian composer
Matthew Hindson, French composer Saint-
Saens. This performance inspired our students to
create musical images in their imaginations.
Students then created and were formally
assessed on their ability to compose a melody
using a Musescore a notation software program,
which represents the features and behaviours of
Native Australian animals as part of their Stage 4
class work.
School Spectacular
Once again this year we have our amazing vocal
ensemble performing in the 2019 School
Spectacular STARS. This major event will be
held at the Qudos Bank Arena on Friday the 22nd
and Saturday 23rd November. The School
Spectacular unites 5,500 students from across
NSW public schools. Each student and their
teacher plays a vital role in bringing the show
together.
Our talented vocalists have been attending
rehearsals with Mrs Davidson during their lunch
times in preparation for this world class
production. This production is an amazing
opportunity for our students to be involved in.
The event promotes, self-confidence and
students gain a stronger belief in themselves. We
are sure the students involved, will reflect on this
amazing event. We wish you all the best and as
they say in show business Chookas!

Celebrating Student Success
State Choir – We had 4 fabulous voices
represent us at the State Choir. Lizzie Watson,
Awen Davidson, Jordyn Maddick and Isabela
Rabling, all performed on the Opera house stage
to a sold out audience. Lizzie also performed
with the NSW State Singers who were part of a
premier performance of Electric Rain by
Australian composer Matthew Hindson who was
in the audience.
Well done girls! What a superb performance!
Young Archie Winner
Our talented Year 11 Visual Arts student Aysha
Huq was awarded the winner for the Young
Archie category 16-18 years. This is an
outstanding achievement for this amazing young
artist. This national competition had 2100
students enter this year. The competition was
judged by the art gallery of New South Wales’s
community engagement officer, Marikit Santiago
who is an artist in her own right and Archibald
prize finalist in 2016. Aysha’s portrait of her
grandmother is titled Helima. Aysha captured her
grandmothers’ love of nature and excitement of
visiting the beach and placing her feet in the
tranquil waters at Hymns beach on the south
coast. Aysha paid tribute to her grandmother who
taught her the love of painting and she was
encouraged to submit her painting by Ms Langley
when Aysha and some of the year 11 Visual Arts
girls participated in our lunchtime Archie
workshops. This is an amazing achievement for
Aysha who was also interviewed by ABC radio. I
am certain this is just the first step along an
amazing art journey for Aysha! You will see the
amazing talents of this student in the future.
Congratulations Aysha and thanks to Ms
Langley.
Our legendary Mac Fields Rock band The 902
played a blistering set at the YouthRock band
competition back in July. These students won
their heat and the School of Rock Award, before
moving into the final held at Bankstown Sports
Club on July 31st. The band consists of students
Alex Tallon, Sebastian Kruisheer, Nissa Cheong,
Petar Kolunzdic and former student Spencer.
The band performed, wrote and composed their
own set. They were sadly, beaten in the final by

guys did a captivating job representing our
school and gave it their best pumping out their
highly professional set. Well done to these
dedicated students and also a big thanks to Mr
Bozzetto for his encouragement, dedication and
guidance.

artworks created and individual art teachers
nominated students from each class. We were

Variety Night- In Harmony 2019
In Harmony this year was a long but successful
evening. This was a whole school event and is a
Macquarie Fields High School tradition. The
CAPA faculty have been organising this event for
over 20 years. The singers, dancers and
musicians love the supportive audience full of
their peers and parents. They are never shy to
get up and give it a go! The evening started at
6pm and finished at 10pm. Students had the
opportunity to display their very own performance
piece. The students had a fabulous time up in the
spotlight, performances included ballads through
to thrashing rock numbers. On the night there
were 32 acts involving around 90 students.
Thank you to all our dedicated students who took
the time out of their busy schedules to learn and
rehearse their performances! You were amazing!
