Using MALT
This section describes how MALT finds models in SPECTRUM.
The MAC Address Locator Tool (MALT) helps you locate devices and their connectivity to other devices on your network when you know the Physical or Media Access Control (MAC) address. MALT’s main purpose is to find devices that are modeled in SPECTRUM that hear the MAC address that is entered in the MALT Find dialog box.
MALT first attempts to find a model with the designated MAC address in the SpectroSERVER database, and if successful, will present the model name along with hub connection information. It then interrogates intelligent hubs in the SpectroSERVER database to determine the hub and port where the address is connected. Since there can be several paths to the same device, MALT presents a list of hubs and ports, arranged with the most likely port first.
Accessing MALTAccess MALT from the Topology view by opening the Tools menu and selecting MALT (see Figure 1). The Find dialog box as well as the MALT’s Main window will open.
Note:Note:
Occasionally, if a target is on a multiple access segment and another hub hears the target across a MAC-layer bridge, that other hub may, in fact, hear fewer addresses on its port than the directly connected hub. This is due to the bridge’s address filters. This happens very rarely since hub ports connected to bridges typically hear many addresses, but to handle these cases, the list provided by MALT should be considered a list of most likely hubs and it may be necessary to sort it manually.

Finding Devices with MALTTo find devices that are heard from the MAC address that you enter in the Find dialog box, highlight the device and open the Attribute Browser dialog box to find the MAC address for the device. (For more information on the Attribute Browser, see the SPECTRUM Views documentation.) Open the Find dialog box, as shown in Figure 1 on Page 8, and enter the MAC address. Figure 2 shows the result list of devices that heard this address.
Figure 2: MALT: Find Result List
If you do not have a MAC address, click on the Vendors button in the Find dialog box. Select a vendor from the Vendors list. The MAC address for the vendor that you select will appear in the Find dialog box.
The Find Result list shows both the device searched for (Modeled) and all Hub and Repeater ports where that device’s MAC address is currently being heard. If you set the Bridges/Switches option, these ports will also be shown.
The columns that are displayed on the Find Result List are described below:
CategoryThe Category column shows you if the MAC address is Modeled, Heard on, Connected to.

MAC Address Locator Tool User’s Guide Page 10
Heard On: The hub and port where the designated MAC address is connected. Since there can be several paths to the same device, MALT presents a list of hubs and ports, arranged with the port closest to the MAC address first.
Connected to: The connections between the model with the desig-nated MAC address and hubs modeled in the SpectroSERVER data-base.
Modeled: The Model Name and Model Type Name of the model with the designated MAC address.
Model NameThis column shows the model name for the found device.
Model TypeThis column shows the model type for the found device.
Network AddressThis column shows the IP address SPECTRUM uses to communicate to the SNMP agent of the device.
PortThe Port column shows the board number and the port number of the port.
Active No.The Active No. column shows zeros unless the Port Activity option is set when your Find is launched. If you do set this option, this column shows the total number of MAC addresses currently being heard on each found port. The only time a number will show up in this column is when a device is heard - the lower the number, the closer it is to the MAC address.
Click once in the Active No. heading box to sort the entire list by this numerical data; ports showing the smallest total number of heard addresses will be nearest in proximity to your entered MAC address.

The MAC Address Locator Tool (MALT) Find dialog box is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3: MALT: Find Dialog Box
The Find dialog box opens over the MALT main window.
MALT accepts MAC addresses in six hexadecimal bytes separated by delimiters (e.g., 0-1d-01-02-fe-df) or vendor name followed by three hexadecimal bytes (e.g., Cisco-0.23.ab). The following conditions apply:
Task – To Find a Device Using MALT
1. Select MALT.
2. Enter the MAC address for the device being sought and click on OK.
Using MALT F inding Devices wi th MALT
MAC Address Locator Tool User’s Guide Page 12
A hexadecimal byte can be specified by one or two characters. For example, a (0a) can be specified as: “0a” or “a”.
Valid hex digits are 0-9 and a-f. The digits a-f can be specified in either upper or lower case (i.e., “A” or “a”).
MALT accepts the following delimiters for hexadecimal numbers; “.”, “:”, and “-”. The period “.”, and colon “:” , and dash “-” separa-tors may be mixed in a given string.
The Manufacturer ID (for example, 00-00-1D) is written to the Find dialog box when a Ven-dor is selected. You must then enter the Sequential Address (for example, 00-26-A3) for the MAC address that you want to find. The complete MAC address would be “00-00-1D-00-26-A3”.
By default, MALT will only query the repeaters/hubs mod-eled in the SPECTRUM database.
3. If you do not have the MAC address, click on the Vendors button to display a Vendor list. When you select a vendor, the Manufacturer ID for the MAC address for that vendor will appear in the Find dialog box.
4. MALT executes a search for the designated MAC address, with the results of the search displayed in the MAC Address Locator Tool: Main window (Figure 1).
Using MALT F inding Devices wi th MALT

5. To expand your search, click on Bridges/Switches to include all layer 2 devices, and/or click on Port Activity to list the total number of ports heard on a given port.

SortYou can modify MALT to best suit your needs by selecting a column category (Model Name, Network Address, etc.) by which to sort models. You can sort on up to three columns at a time and order models in ascending or descending order.
Figure 11: Sort Dialog Box
You can sort by selecting View > Sort or by clicking the Sort icon button. The Sort dialog box, shown in Figure 11, appears.
You can also sort by clicking in a column header. This automatically makes the selected column the primary sort as indicated by the small triangle next to the right column separator. Clicking this same column will reverse the sort order and the triangle will invert its position. Ascending and descending order are indicated by a triangle pointing up and down, respectively.
Click in another column header and this becomes the primary sort, shifting the previously selected primary column to secondary.
