EDITOR’S LETTER

I celebrated my freedom day with a heavy heart, after witnessing fellow South Africans kill, assault, torch and steal from our foreign brothers and sisters. As we celebrate our own freedom we should remember that our forefathers were accommodated by our foreign neighbours. I don’t agree with justification to kill because people are taking our jobs and our women. We need to reflect and make up our minds about the South Africa we want to leave for our children. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) convened a special sitting to debate the recent spate of violence against foreign nationals in the province. This follows last week's peace march where the legislature, alongside other sectors and Premier David Makhura, joined in to show a united front against attacks aimed at foreign nationals. Expected to attend the special sitting are diplomats, high commissioners and ambassadors from all African countries represented in Gauteng. “The debate is intended to unpack the incongruities emanating from these acts and other related incidents,” said the GPL. – SAnews.gov.za

CAREERSAre you proud of your online footprint?

Why Is Advertising so Important to Business?

It’s no secret that employers and recruiters take to the internet to find out more about you, but do you know what they’re looking at when they Google you? Take a look. Like what you see? Read through our checklist below and ensure you avoid these rookie mistakes: A picture says a 1 000 words If you searched for your online profile right now, what picture would come up? Employers and recruiters prefer to hire someone with a professional headshot; someone who looks as if they take work seriously. The picture doesn’t have to be from a photoshoot, you simply need to be dressed for success and ensure it's taken under good lighting. And pay attention to the background!

Your work Employers and recruiters go online to find out if you have a great portfolio. They look at things like your accomplishments, your credibility, and

how your work can benefit the company and bring value to the team. Make sure they are able to find something they like. The way you carry yourself online Many employers want to know if you’re the right fit for the company. Yes, your work and skills matter, but they also need to know if you’re a team player, for example. By doing online research on you they’ll gain a better understanding of your personality and the way you behave and interact with others online. If you constantly speak badly about your previous employers and colleagues, for example you won’t be a favourable candidate.

Your online profilesWhen employers and recruiters are researching you, they’ll want to know how you present yourself on professional online networks. An online profile is where they’ll likely start. How complete are your profiles – did you bother to fill in previous work experience, skills and

other important factors that could hook employers? If not, you probably don’t mind missing out on top job opportunities. Join a reputable platform such as Who's Who or LinkedIn and spruce up your online profile. Why do they bother doing all of this? They want to see if your CV and cover letter have any substance or if you’re just all talk. Take the time to build up your online profile and top recruiters and employers are more likely to find - and hire you. -careers24.com

As far back as Ancient Egypt, advertising has served a critical purpose in the business world by enabling sellers to effectively compete with one another for the attention of buyers. Whether the goods and services your company provides are a necessity, a luxury or just a bit of whimsy, you can't rely on a one-time announcement or word-of-mouth chatter to keep a steady stream of customers. A strong commitment to advertising is as much an external call to action as it is an internal reinforcement to your sales team.

PromotionThe primary objective of advertising is to get the word out that you have something exciting to offer, says George Felton, author of "Advertising: Concept and Copy." It can be anything from an upcoming entertainment event you're promoting, a new product line you're selling, a political campaign you're managing, the expansion of an existing platform of services or officially hanging out a shingle for your first business. Whether your promotion takes the form of print ads, commercials, billboards or handbills, the content adheres to the rules of journalism by identifying who, what, when, where and why.

AwarenessAdvertising helps to raise your target demographic's awareness of issues with which they may be unfamiliar as well as educate them on the related benefits of your product or service. A popular example of this is the health care industry. If, for instance, a consumer watches a television commercial in which someone describes aches and pains that are similar to those experienced by the viewer, the ad not only identifies a probable cause but suggests a potential remedy or treatment option to discuss with her doctor.

ComparisonsAdvertising invites your target audience to evaluate how your product or service measures up against your competitors, says Gerard Tellis, author of "Effective Advertising: Understanding When, How, and Why Advertising Works." Demonstrations of household cleaning products are a good example of this because they provide compelling visual evidence of which product does a faster and more effective job of tackling stubborn stains.

RetentionAn ongoing advertising campaign is essential in reminding your existing customers that you're still around, say Kenneth Roman and Jane Maas, authors of "How to Advertise." In a troubled economy where so many shops, restaurants and companies are going out of business, maintaining a strong presence through regular ads, fliers, postcards, events and a dynamic website is invaluable for long-term relationships.

MoraleWhen people ask your employees where they're working, the latter will likely feel better about their jobs if the reaction to their reply is, "Wow! I've heard a lot of great things about that store" instead of "Nope, never heard of it" or "Oh, are they still around?" Investing in an advertising plan keeps your business an active part of the conversational vocabulary and community buzz. This, in turn, gives your workers a sense of pride and emotional ownership in an enterprise that's generating positive feelings and name recognition.

Criminal justice system ready to deal with perpetrators

End April 2015

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, says the criminal justice system is ready to deal with the perpetrators of attacks on foreign nationals. Minister Radebe is chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) appointed by President Jacob Zuma to deal with the attacks on foreign nationals. “Perpetrators of these crimes can expect that prosecutors will ask courts to impose sentences of direct imprisonment,” he said on Tuesday. Addressing the media in Pretoria, Minister Radebe said to ensure speedy prosecutions in these cases, the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority have set up dedicated courts with magistrates, prosecutors and interpreters to address the situation in KwaZulu-Natal. Minister Radebe said the dedicated courts have been put in place in Chatsworth, Umlazi, Ntuzuma and Durban. “We are not taking a business as usual approach. We want to ensure that the perpetrators of these vile acts are dealt with as speedily as possible,” he said. With regard to the 2008 attacks on foreign nationals, the Minister disputed media reports that only one person was convicted for the attacks. “We would like to categorically place it on record that these claims are far from the truth,” he said. A NPA list of serious cases following the 2008 attacks on foreign nationals -- dated 28 July 2009 – shows that 79 cases

recorded led to the convictions. These included convictions for public violence, robbery, housebreaking and theft, malicious damage to property, murder, assault, intimidation and possession of dangerous weapons. Minister Radebe called on communities to continue to work with government to ensurethat there is lasting peace. People with information on plans to cause violence or those who have witnessed acts of violence have been urged to call Crime Stop on 086 0010111 or SAPS Emergency number 10111 – SAnews.gov.za

Movie: Black or WhiteCast: Kevin Costner, Octavia Spencer, Jillian Estell, Bill Burr, Jennifer Ehle, André Holland, Gillian Jacobs, Anthony MackieDirector: Mike Binder

"Black or White," a domestic drama about a custody battle over a mixed-race child, is the kind of movie you root for, because it's clearly coming from a sincere and honest place. But it's often painful, and not in a good way; it's painful because of the roads it doesn't explore, the shortcuts it takes, and the special pleading it can't stop itself from indulging in. Written and directed by Mike Binder, and bankrolled by star Kevin Costner, it wants to illuminate and heal through straight talk, and if you look at it purely as a commercial venture, there's no denying its specialness. There are no superheroes, no robots, no dinosaurs, no guns, nothing that producers would consider exploitable elements. There's no easy marketplace slot into which it can be placed and nurtured. It's what used to be called, in the 1950s and '60s, a "problem picture." In this case the problem is racial distrust, and how it's perpetuated in a country that likes to think of itself as post-racial, and that's filled with people who think they're not racist, not at all, no sir, no ma'am. The film starts strong in a hospital waiting room, dropping you right into the worst moment of Elliott's life: learning that his wife (Jennifer Ehle) died of injuries sustained in a car wreck.

A grandfather is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When her paternal grandmother seeks custody, the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply. With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding. Based on real events, this is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

Athletics in SA alive and wellFor the past six years Athletics South Africa (ASA) has always seemed to be either emerging from a scandal, headed for one or slap-bang in the middle it, while the athletes played second fiddle. But times are changing. According to the supersport.com website, this past weekend, Stellenbosch played host to a well-supported, fairly well-organised and highly-successful South African Athletics Championships, where the narrative changed from a focus on the boardroom shenanigans at ASA to the solid performances of the athletes themselves.A new generation of talented athletes delivered promising performances at the Commonwealth Games last year and the past weekend proved that they’ve continued to build on that success and are looking good for the challenge at the World Championships in Beijing from August 22-30. The new administration cannot take credit for the athletes’ success - president Aleck Skhosana and his Board were only elected in June last year, only a month-and-half ahead of the Commonwealth Games - but the stability at the top certainly hasn’t hurt anyone associated with the sport.

End April 2015

“When we were elected we said

“The athletics has been very good and this week

coaches must coach, athletes must run and all of them must stay out of the politics. They listened to us. South Africa is back as a powerhouse on the continent. We are back. Athletics South Africa is back. It shows that wherever there is peace, there will always be progress,” Skhosana said in Stellenbosch this weekend. He had reason to be optimistic as 10 athletes made the qualifying standard for the World Championships this weekend, overshadowing news earlier in the week of sprinter Simon Magakwe’s two-year ban for a doping offence. Anaso Jobodwana (200m), Wayde van Niekerk (400m), Sunette Viljoen (javelin), Orazio Cremona (shot put), Jaco Engelbrecht (shot put), Ruswahl Samaai (long jump), Stephen Mokoka (5000m, national record), Lebogang Shange (20km walk), Wayne Snyman (20km walk) and LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles) all booked their places in Beijing, while the likes of Akani Simbine (100m and 200m) and Wenda Nel (400m hurdles) travelled to Stellenbosch having already qualified.

and that is what the public has been waiting for. It’s no longer about (boardroom) individuals, it’s about the athletes. It’s about Caster Semenya winning the 800m title again, it’s about Anaso Jobodwana and Akani Simbine and their times in the sprints, it’s about LJ van Zyl’ s 49.29 after he was written off – a good week all round,” Skhosana explained. “Other countries would have taken years to recover (from years of mismanagement, but we’re recovering quickly. This weekend justifies that point.” Skhosana is not naïve, though. Athletics on the track may be in a fairly healthy position, but financially the body is still struggling after a string of bad decisions. Pole-vaulter Jan Blignaut sued ASA for R12 million for the head injury he suffered during a sanctioned meet in 2009 and won a default judgment after ASA failed to defend the case. Sports24.com
