A port is a connector at the back of a computer where you plug in an external device such as a printer, keyboard, scanner, mouse, modem, etc. this allows instructions

and data to flow between the computer and the device.

the computer ports are also commonly referred to as the Input/Output ports(I/O ports).

Most connectors are polarized.this permits the cable to be plugged in only in the correct direction. Computer ports have numerous functions and connectors of varying designs.

Serial Ports most commonly used for connections to mice and modems.

Parallel Portsmost commonly used for scanners and printers.

also called the “printer port”.

P.S. the basic difference between serial and parallel ports is that of the speed. Parallel port is needed  for high speed connection like printers.

P.S.S. serial and parallel ports are now replaced by USB interface.

PS/2 Ports small, round-shaped ports consisting

of 6 pins. both ports (for mouse and keyboard),

look the same. The only difference comes in their color. The purple one is for keyboard and green is for mouse.

P.S. nowadays we have USB ports for mouse and keyboard.

VGA Port used for connecting a computer to a monitor, or the CPU to the computer monitor.

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) ports on computer to transmit High Definition (1080p+) Video from the computer video card to the monitor/TV.

Ethernet/Internet Portsfirst introduced in 1980 to standardize the local area networks (LAN).

used to connect to internet and intranet networks at high speed.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Ports used to connect many external devices including keyboards, scanners, external hard drives, USB/flash drives (also sometimes called thumb drives or portable USB drives), cameras, iPhones and many other peripherals and devices.

E-SATA found on the latest computers. These let you plug in the newest breed of portable hard drives with extra speed and larger capacity.

One reason why people prefer e-Sata over USB is that the transfer rate is really fast.
