Summer 2015

Page 4: MA Now Vol.1

This year, Madison Academy celebrates 60 years of providing a quality education in a Christian environment. Much has changed over the years - even our name. Although our faces, facilities, and methods have changed, our mission has remained consistent. We are devoting time and resources to spiritual formation as we prepare our students for the uncertainties of the world in which they live. We are giving them more opportunities to live out their faith, both locally and abroad. Our goal is to produce young men and women of exemplary character who are prepared to make a difference in the world.

Wayne Gretzky once said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been.” We cannot be limited by preparing students just for the jobs of today; instead, we must prepare them for the emerging careers of tomorrow. We are modernizing our delivery methods, creating new tracks of study, and offering exciting new electives. We are developing new spaces for collaboration, reimagining libraries and media centers, redesigning our gymnatorium to better support the creative arts, and building new fitness facilities and classrooms.

Good and exciting changes are on the way! Madison Academy’s future is brighter than ever as we prepare for the next 60 years of quality education in a Christian environment.

ACADEMICS

72 seniors celebrate their milestone together, joining 2,300 graduates since the school began 60 years ago

How do you measure the class of 2015? There are many metrics that might be considered - academic awards, scholarship offers, state championships won, the number of Twitter followers (the student with the highest number comes in with just under 28,000). Forty percent of the class were MA “lifers,” having attended our school since Kindergarten.

This was a project-based class, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They were a collaborative class, learning communication and cooperation skills. They were creative in the way they solved problems and refined critical thinking skills by discovering new concepts. They were a digital class, having attended Madison Academy during its first four years of Apple Distinguished School recognition.

They were one of the most accomplished classes in the history of Madison Academy, affirming our commitment to 21st century learning skills as the way of the future.

CLASS OF 2015 CHARTS THEIR FUTURE

“Madison Academy has provided me with an academic platform from which I can achieve future success. I will always be grateful.”

- McKenzie Rosek, MA Class Of 2015 National Merit Scholar

MA’S FIRST NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAROver 1.5 million students attempt to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship during their junior year of high school. Only 50,000 make the initial cut. Of that number, 15,000 will become finalists, one percent of the students in the original pool. Only half of that number will be selected as National Merit Scholars. Both finalists and winners are highly sought after by universities, because of their accomplishments and potential for success. MA has produced several finalists over the years, but McKenzie Rosek is MA’s first winner.

Madison Academy’s rigorous academic offerings and varied quality electives prepare students to excel in a variety of challenging career fields. The class of 2015 is one of the strongest in MA history.

ATHLETICS

They said it couldn’t be done. Since the establishment of The Alabama High School Athletics Association in 1921, no school had ever won the “triple crown” - winning football, basketball, and baseball state championships in the same academic year. When our basketball team brought home the trophy in March, the Mustangs were reigning champs in all three, though in two separate school years. As the baseball playoffs commenced, media began talking up the potential for making history.

Mustang coaches will tell you discussions of things like triple crowns are more of a distraction than a goal. Each coach is focused on the next opponent; the next game. Each has a process of preparation. Nevertheless print, television, and radio began to advance the story, and the buzz began to spread across campus and the community at large. When the baseball team lost the first of three games in the championship series, expectations slowly came back to earth. There is a reason it had never been done before. It’s hard! But the boys of MA came back and won the last two in convincing fashion.

This feat is challenging for 3A schools because of the size of the student body. There was a significant talent overlap among the three teams, though only one athlete played on all three. It is fair to say that Madison Academy has created a championship culture. Student athletes have embraced the expectation of being a factor in the post season. There is an acute sense of school pride. Volleyball, girls basketball, golf, tennis, boys soccer, girls soccer, and softball all extended their seasons in 2014-15.

Winning begins with inspirational leadership. The Mustang winning tradition is a tribute to the coaches and student athletes who are driven to give their best effort year after year. There is great anticipation as the Mustangs approach another exciting season.

“It’s something I’ll never forget, Being a member of all three championship teams was a great honor, especially playing with such a great group of talented athletes and coaches. I’m happy we could do this for our school.”- Cole Tomlinson, Three Sport Champion

Five-Time State Champion Sydney Homan Signs With Wingate University

“The balanced education my daughter

recieved at MA created an environment where she was

happy and thrived. Best of all, her education was consistently

based on a strong spiritual foundation.” - Jill Homan

CHAMPION ON AND OFF THE COURTSydney Homan (MA Class of 2015) has left her mark on MA, having won four state championships in singles and one in doubles. The school wasn’t exactly known for tennis before she enrolled. There were other schools she could have chosen for the purpose of competition, but her family was looking for much more. They wanted Sydney to have balance - good athletics, a supportive school community, a quality education, and lasting spiritual values. She’s not known as an athlete alone - her friends know her as a humble servant leader with a strong and compassionate spiritual core.

Following graduation, Sydney served on the MA Dominican Republic mission team, putting the exclamation point on her MA experience. Her kindness and empathetic heart left a lasting imprint on the children there.

A mark of success is to leave something better than you found it. Sydney accomplished this, not only in tennis, but through a Christ-like example that will last a lifetime.

ORLANDO

Jesus said, “What you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” To that end, we offer unique and diverse options for our students. There are two days of planned local volunteer service each year, but many of our students make long term commitments to Lincoln Village and other service organizations. We travel to Kissimmee, Florida each fall to volunteer with Give Kids The World, a program designed to serve children with life threatening illnesses and their families. Internationally, the Hacienda of Hope in Ecuador is our longest standing relationship. It is a life-changing trip to the equator where students, teachers, and parents build relationships with children at area schools and the Hacienda’s orphanage. An amazing new adventure in the Dominican Republic was introduced this summer with students engaging in humanitarian and teaching ministries.

These experiences open the eyes of our students to the reality of pain and poverty in the world and plants the seed that they are empowered to effect change.

CREATIVE ARTS

“We want to provide an environment where students can find satisfaction

in discovering their unique gift or talent, be challenged to give their best, and experience the joy that

comes from performance.” - Jessica Snell, Band Director

NEW ADVANCES IN CREATIVE ARTS

Angela Shin is an extraordinary talent who comes to our Creative Arts team from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Though she was born in Oklahoma, Angela grew up in South Korea. She holds a Masters degree from MICA in Illustration Practice and is passionate about teaching younger children. In addition to being skilled in traditional art forms, her expertise in Environment Design, 3D Modeling, Stop-motion Animation, and general illustration offer a unique fit with our new technology offerings. She has illustrated two books and worked as a freelance illustrator in South Korea, engaging in commissioned work for children, like paper-toy design and character design for 3D animation.

Angela’s fervent faith plays an important role in her love of teaching art. “I envision my students finding joy in creativity by exploring the beauty of their daily life with God the Creator. I will provide art activities as a healing/uplifting tool for students to find their true identity in Christ.”

There is a renaissance of sorts emerging at Madison Academy with more options for discovering and honing creative gift sets. We are reassessing the role played by the creative arts, and our administration is committed to its support. Schools should be incubators of new ideas. They may be expressed in a painting, on a stage, through animation, through music, and many other creative avenues.

Our Academy of Music is in place to help our younger students discover their musical talent, with individual and small group instruction.

New facilities and gifted faculty additions are evidences of Madison Academy’s commitment to this important facet of education. Whether the student is an aspiring artist or envisions a career in medicine, law, or business, we want to exercise and educate the whole mind.

Could a British flair be coming to MA Theatre? Terri Rowe (MA class of ‘75) has won international awards in the United Kingdom for acting, set design and direction, and joins our faculty this fall. Her education pedigree includes Freed-Hardeman University, The University of North Alabama, and the University of Wales/City and Guilds of London Institute.

Terri’s career has included stints in community, educational, and professional theatre. She has written for theatre and television, has had seven books published and performed on stage across Europe. Coming home to Madison Academy, Terri has proposed comprehensive changes to our theatre curriculum that includes an improvisational troupe using student-developed material based on traditional fairytales, fables, and contemporary stories.

“Our teachers are invested in us. It’s a supportive learning environment where students help each other and teachers have the personal touch and connect with us.”- Jack Fulkerson, MA Student Ambassador

Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement classes are a great way for students to get college credit while still in high school. Madison Academy currently offers five of each in the core disciplines of English, math, science, and history. The University of Alabama Huntsville, Calhoun Community College, and Faulkner University are participating with us in our Dual Enrollment program. This program allows a student to earn high school credit while also earning college credit, subject to approval by Madison Academy and meeting the requirements set by the college.

Advanced Placement (AP) students are required to take the AP exam. According to The College Board, “Universities in over 60 countries outside the United States recognize AP in the admission process.” Colleges participating in the AP program give college credit for a passing score. Since each school has unique requirements, students should inquire with their choice of college for details regarding acceptable scores. Even though there are additional expenses to consider, this is a great way to fast-track a college education in a financially advantageous way.

CHANGING THE ACADEMIC PARADIGMIntroducing “Project Lead The Way” and “Zulama”Advanced tracks of study are being introduced in the 2015-16 school year, with pre-engineering and entertainment technology taking center stage. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) will be the catalyst for engineering. Students “focus on the process of defining and solving a problem, not on getting the “right” answer. They learn how to apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation.”

Zulama is a four-year track of study in gaming and 3-D simulation, a burgeoning career field. Careers in this field are not limited to creating consumer software. Companies in Huntsville’s Research Park are utilizing virtual reality simulation with gaming graphics to train military and government agencies for everything from changing a part on a piece of equipment to preparing a special ops team for a mission. Both PLTW and Zulama are widely recognized as the frontrunners in their respective fields. A pre-med track will be added in 2016 to better meet the needs of the high percentage of students declaring majors in medical careers.

The new modified block schedule made it feasible to create our Career Field Studies program, providing interested seniors the opportunity to gain real work experience in their areas of interest by being matched up with business mentors in our community.

There is great excitement among students as they anticipate additional electives in the arts and practical electives, such as Driver’s Education, Interior Design, Fitness and Nutrition, Introduction to Independent Living, and Leadership with Public Speaking. Our students have more opportunities than ever to express their creativity, explore new interests and engage in practical studies while preparing for collegiate success.

Little Madison Academy is getting a facelift, on the surface and underneath. First grade is moving to the little school this fall and plans are on the drawing board to expand the facility to make room for second grade as well. What was once our pre-school and kindergarten is becoming our primary school. The interior has been refreshed with a beautiful color palatte. The life-sized paintings of the animals of the Ark look as though they could literally come to life - especially in the imaginative minds of our children.

Making the transition from home to school is easy and fun at LMA. Our nurturing environment provides an atmosphere where students feel safe and loved in a Christ-centered community. The curriculum aligns with the academic standards that span all grades at Madison Academy. Improvements are being made to our technology infrastructure to support learning initiatives consistent with our Apple Distinguished School status.

Come see the changes - the “Happiest Place In Huntsville” keeps getting better!

Cassidy Lamm, Lauren Lambert, and Joshua Wolfe are three friends who graduated from Madison Academy and chose to continue their educations at the University of Alabama. They were among the first students to participate in our Apple learning initiative. The three were featured recently in a story published by the University of Alabama Engineering News because of a collaborative effort to merge their understanding of technology with their compassion for children with learning disabilities.

Cassidy and Josh were pursuing degrees in computer science, while Lauren was studying psychology and childhood development. The three would come together under the oversight of mentoring professors to produce an app to help children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). “Children with autism spectrum disorders generally have trouble recognizing facial expressions and emotions in others,” Lambert said in the UA Engineering News story. “The basic assumption is that you learn emotions from the people around you but, with autism, you’re not interacting socially in the same way, so your visual patterns don’t focus on the same places. It’s kind of random and disorganized.”

Their research was published at a level envied by PhD candidates. “Improving Socialization and Emotion Recognition for Children with Autism Using a Smartphone App” was published in “Innovative Technologies to Benefit Autistic Children” by Nava Silton, professor of psychology at Marymount Manhattan College. The book was released in spring 2014.

Cassidy Lamm (class of ‘11), Josh Wolf (class of ‘12), and Lauren Lambert (class of ‘11) developed a smartphone app for communicating with autistic children

“During my years at MA, I was given the opportunity to serve children with special needs. This ignited my passion for helping children with

disabilities, and eventually led me to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy.”

After 60 Years, Our Mission Remains The Same:

As an institution, we have grown over the years - wiser, larger, spiritually stronger, and more engaged in our community. Much has changed in our world since our founding, but our mission has never been more relevant. We continue to mold students in the image of Jesus Christ who is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Though times may change, our mission will always be distinctively Christ-centered.

“And Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, and in favor with God and man.” - Luke 2:52

Become a lasting part of our future.

Madison Academy is looking toward new horizons by preparing students academically and spiritually for the challenges of the 21st century. We are modernizing and enlarging our facilities. We are strengthening our curriculum and delivery methods, while helping students clearly define their personal faith and providing relevant ways to express it. We are producing doctors, engineers, merit scholars, and world class athletes with a biblical worldview. Whatever their gift, talent, or accomplishment, Madison Academy is providing a Christ-centered perspective in a distinctively Christian environment.

Become a lasting part of our future. Your generosity will help us produce tomorrow’s young men and women of exceptional character.
