INSTALLING THE SPEAKERSBefore Installation: IR Knockout (M6 only)Moderno M6 speakers have a knockout for instal l ing an IRreceiver into the speaker’s frontbaffle. This allows you to aimremote controls at the front ofthe room instead of at the electronics, in systems where the electronics may be placed inan inconvenient location.

To remove the knockout, drill itout from the rear using a drillwith a ½” bit (there is a sleeveguide directly behind the knock-out).

After inserting the IR receiverthrough the hole, seal it into thespeaker using si l icone caulk(make sure that there are nogaps around the receiver thatcould create air leaks) and dressthe cable behind the speakeralong with the speaker wire.

NOTE: THE SPEAKER’S GRILLE MAY

REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE

IR RECE IVER. I F TH IS OCCURS,SLIGHTLY ENLARGE THE HOLES IN THE

GRILLE THAT ARE D IRECTLY IN FRONT

OF THE IR RECEIVER.

Installing the SpeakersStep 1. Determine the location

for the speaker (seeSpeaker Placement onpage 1). Center thespeaker between the wallstuds or ceiling joists. Tapthe wall or ceiling and lis-ten for a “hollow” sound,or use a stud finder tolocate studs.

Step 2. Position the includedcutout template where thespeaker is to be locatedand trace the outline onthe wall or ceiling with apencil.

• Make sure the speakersare even with each otherand level.

NOTE: READ STEP 6 ABOUT RUNNING

SPEAKER WIRE BEFORE DECID ING ON

THE FINAL SPEAKER LOCATIONS.

Step 3. Drill a small hole in thecenter of the outline youjust traced.

Step 4. Insert a coat hanger wireinto the hole to feel-around for possibleobstructions. If there areobstructions, patch thehole and select anotherlocation for the speaker.

Step 5. Carefully cut the outlineof the mounting holeusing a keyhole or dry-wall saw. Remove thedrywall from the cutout.

IMPORTANT: Make sureyour amplifier’s power is turned off before performing Step 6.

Step 6. Run the speaker cablefrom the speaker outputsof your amplifier to thespeaker locations. Usehigh-quality cable suchas HomeTech HTC10016/4 cable. Pull thecables through themounting holes you cut inthe wall.

• Allow a few extra feet ofcable, and leave enoughcable slack so you canstrip the insulation fromthe conductors when you’re ready to connect to the speakers.

NOTE: IF SPEAKER CABLE IS TO BE RUN THROUGH WALLS OR CEILINGS, THE

CABLE MUST BE UL- AND CL-RATED FOR YOUR SAFETY AND BUILD ING CODE

COMPLIANCE.

Step 7. Speaker performance can beenhanced by insulating the wall orceil ing cavity with f iberglass insulation. When insulating speakers,it is best to use a sheet of unfacedfiberglass insulation behind andaround the sides of the speaker.

Step 8. Connect the positive (“+”) wire fromthe amplifier to the speaker’s red terminal. Connect the negative (“–”)wire from the amplif ier to the speaker’s black terminal.

• The speaker’s connector posts arespring-loaded. Push the top of each connector post down toopen the connector and insert the exposed wires into theholes in the posts.

IMPORTANT: Be sure not to let any stray ‘+’ and ‘–’wires touch each other. Touching wires can cause ashort-circuit that could damage your amplifier.

• Double-check that you connected amplifier “+” to speaker“+” and amplifier “–” to speaker “–”.

MODERNO IN-WALL/IN-CEILING SPEAKERS

Step 9. Make sure all the RotoLock clamps are in the full clockwiseposition so that they are tucked within the mounting hole’sborder. Insert the speaker into the mounting hole.

Step 10. Tighten the four screws onthe front of the speakerbaffle evenly until thespeaker is seated snuglyand evenly against the wallor ceiling.

IMPORTANT: If you areusing a drill or electricscrewdriver to tighten thescrews be sure use thelowest torque setting.

Step 11. Install the grilles by placing them into the speaker baffles.Powerful magnets on the grilles and on the speaker baffleswill hold the grilles firmly on the speakers.

PAINTING THE GRILLESModerno grilles may be painted to color-match their surroundings.First, remove the grilles from the speakers then remove the scrimcloth that is attached to the backs of the grilles. (The adhesive thatholds the cloth in place is reusable.) Paint the grilles with very thinpaint (5 parts thinner to 1 part paint), being careful not to plug theholes. When the paint has fully dried, re-attach the scrim cloths to thebacks of the grilles and re-install the grilles on the speakers.

SPEAKER ADJUSTMENTSPivoting TweeterModerno M6 and M6R speakers have a pivoting tweeter that allows you to directsound towards or away from the listening area, depending on how the speakers are beingused:

• If you’re using the speakers in stereo or asthe front left/center/right speakers in a hometheater, pivot the tweeters directly towards thelistening area. This will help the sound fromthe speakers blend into a solid soundstageeven if the speakers are widely separated.

• If you’re using the speakers as surroundchannel speakers in a home theater, you cancreate a more diffuse, spacious surroundeffect by pointing the tweeters towards a wallor window, away from the listeners.

To pivot the tweeter, apply light pressure to theplastic ring around the outside edge of thetweeter. Do not touch or apply pressure to thetweeter dome.

Tweeter Level ControlThe Moderno M6 and M6R havea tweeter level control switchthat lets you boost or cut thetweeter’s level by 3dB. Thisallows you to adjust the speak-er’s brightness to better matchyour listening room or personaltaste.

Once you have instal led thespeakers, listen to a variety ofmusic that you are familiar with.If the music all tends to soundtoo bright or dull , use theTweeter Level Control to com-pensate. If some recordingssound dull and some soundbright the speaker is accurately reproducing differences in therecordings, and you shouldleave the control in the middle(0dB) position.
