21st Century Library Learning Environment• The Library is about
– Teaching– Learning– Engaging– Collaborating– Motivating– Empowering– Chatting– Networking
• Video of what may be the most technologically advanced college library in the United States: http://bit.ly/1cnE2S3
21st Century Library Learning/Teaching Tools
Learning Theories (See notes)
Emerging Technologies
Assessment and Evaluation
Emerging Technologies &Tools to Help Increase
Learning Cloud Computing Mobile Apps &Technology Social Media Chat/Digital Reference Blogs RSS feeds QR Codes Slideshow and Multimedia Tools Screencasting Tools Webinars and online courses
Library Web Site• Information evaluated and organized• Learners can use Library web site from any Internet-
connected computer• Librarians can assist in person or by chat reference
Access to: databases, eBooks, journal articles, digital tools for teaching and learning, and citation/bibliographic management tools
• Useful links to tutorials, videos, and resources (by subject)
Mobile Apps for Libraries
• Mobile devices can help create learning by enabling students to:
– search the library catalog– check his/her library account– chat with a librarian– check upcoming library events– call ref or circ desk from mobile app– renew a book or place holds on a book– access the Library’s social media page
Library Databases on Mobile Devices
Example: the EBSCOhost app provides access to numerous EBSCO databases, such as:• Academic Search Complete • Education Research Complete • Teacher Reference Center • ERIC • Computers and Applied Sciences • Complete • Business Source Complete• and others
Why Libraries Need/Want to Use Social Media• Library news and events• Solicit feedback from library users• Respond to library users• Add pictures to make library more interesting• But also to build a base of fans and advocates – who support our library
• See notes for additional reasons
Some Useful Social Media Tools for Libraries Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Flickr YouTube TeacherTube Second Life SlideShare Diigo Wikipedia
Library Digital (Chat) Reference Online personal reference service Reference/research purposes Informational:
questions about hours phone numbers which department to contact
Instructional: non-research Helping people to:
log into resources to use some library search tool

Library Blogs• Librarians can share information with
library users/learners about:– Books and periodicals– Library web site– Tutorials and library videos– Subject information– Upcoming library events– Information literacy instruction– Library issues
• Librarians can also receive feedback from library users
Information Literacy Learning Environment• A classroom computer lab• A computer for every student• A Smart Board for the Instructor
Six Pillars of Cognitive Apprenticeship1. Modelling2. Scaffolding3. Coaching4. Articulation5. Reflection6. Exploration
Emerging Technologies Tools for Information Literacy
• Veletsianos (2010) suggests emerging technologies may or may not be new technologies:
1. Smart Boards2. Instructional Videos (from YouTube)3. Blogger (used for examples, links to other resources, etc.)4. Games, simulations, and virtual worlds (immersive and
interactive) used for a variety of learning purposes5. Tablets with apps (used for a variety of learning purposes)
Instructional Videos
• Teachers might: – create a presentation to guide student learning– or incorporate a video to illustrate a new concept
• Students can:– tell digital stories – create movies

Improved Learning Outcomes from Using Emerging Technologies in the Classroom
• Learning technology alone does not necessarily advance learning.• Important to remember:
– even traditional technologies, when implemented with pedagogically sound practices, can result in significant learning gains.
• Well-integrated learning technologies and practices often do. • Applications working together within the structure of the learning process will
produce the best results. • Value of apps becomes apparent as the apps:
– demonstrate the ability to connect to other useful applications.– provide feedback to the user and instructor.
Conclusion• Library and Information Literacy Instruction are
increasing using emerging technologies• More and more: there is an app for that!• Technology by itself does not advance learning• Technology must be utilized consistently with
accepted and approved learning theories• Information literacy in all its forms leads to an:– improved learning process– improved learning outcome
