The acceptance of the M 32 C long-stroke engine series in the marine industry is a success storywhose equal is hard to find in this power class.

Since its introduction to the market in 1994, more than 780 engines have been sold.

80% of the engines commissioned are marine propulsion engines, 20% are in electrical generator sets.

The M 32 C series is a genuine heavy oil engine. 75% of all the engines commissioned burn the economical heavy fuel oil.

Sales development

The M 32 C long-stroke engine series, with a bore of 320 mm, has continued the market success of itspredecessor in this bore size, the M 453 C.

Decisive factors in the development were the requirements for maximum benefit to the customer,i.e. economy and operational reliability, but environmental aspects were also important.

The operational results have fully confirmed thedesign objectives.

The further development, leading to the M 32 C version with 500 kW, provides even more benefit to the customer.

M 32 C V-engine: compact and powerful

The M 32 C series V-engine was introduced to the marketin 2000 in the 12 and 16 cylinder versions. With a bore of320 mm and a stroke of 420 mm, the engine covers apower range between 5,760 and 8,000 kW in the 700 and750 rpm speed ranges. The engine is designed to meet both the demands of themarine engine market and the requirements of the station-ary electrical power generation and petroleum industrymarkets. The consistent application of the design and developmentphilosophy of the MaK long-stroke engine generation, together with the use of as many components of the in-line engine version as possible, is clearly and impressivelydemonstrated in the external configuration - a compact, simple and clean design.

The modular construction of the engine, the integration ofvarious functions in one component, the robust design andthe employment of components already proven in the in-line engine form the basis for the high availability level ofthis engine.Reliable heavy-oil operation and low fuel and lubricatingoil consumption, together with simple maintenance andlong maintenance intervals, lead to outstandingly econom-ical operation.

On-board electricity generation for diesel-electric propulsion and electrical systems

13

M 32 C as generator driveThe M 32 C is outstandingly suitable as thegenerator drive for electricity generation on ships. The robust design and moderate speed permits unlimited, continuous operation with heavy oil.

Before delivery, in-line engines - complete with generators - are mounted on a common base frame.

Engine and electrics are tested prior to delivery. This measure ensures installationand commissioning on board without any problems.

Economical operation with diesel-electric propulsionThe company has extensive experience inthe design of diesel-electric installations. This applies to both pod propulsion systemsand propulsion by fixed-pitch propellersdriven by electric motors. The combination of the most modern diesel engine technology, at the primaryend of the propulsion train, and the most modern diesel-electric technology, at thesecondary end, provides low operationcosts and better space utilization, which inturn lead to improved economy overall.

Exhaust emissions

Advantages:Large stroke/bore ratioOptimized compression pressureHigh injection pressureLower exhaust emissions due to measures internal to the engineLow fuel consumption and low CO2 emissionsEnvironmentally friendly at low operating costs

The catalyst

SCR catalysts were employed in power stations inthe Eighties already. As part of the Clean Shipresearch project an essential contribution wasmade to the employment of this system on ships.

The legal requirements for low emission figureswill become stricter and stricter. Due to its longstroke, the M 32 C is well suited to meeting thisrequirement. At fixed engine setting and without exhaust gastreatment, its emissions are below the IMO limits.
