What’s the point?

The relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind

Few of us are aware of how these two parts of the mind influence each other and how important that is in relation to success.

Failure to understand this relationship will affect your ability to achieve your goals.

Specifically, what are they?

The conscious mind:

Immediate gratification/ information/ in-the-present thinking

The unconscious mind:

Refers to previous history/ beliefs/ pre-conditioned emotions

Here’s an example

Mary in sales for 10 years, earning £30,000. Tom earns >£100,000. How does Mary relate to this? She wants to earn the same as Tom. Her unconscious mind refers to her past and finds no supporting evidence to convince it that she really does want to achieve this goal. This causes conflict within. Mary might consciously say she is on goal, however, with negative internal dialogue her enthusiasm lapses. A self-fulfilling prophesy.

Explanation

• Conflict occurs between the conscious and unconscious minds when they have different opinions on the outcome of a set goal.

• You can say that you’re working towards a goal, but your unconscious minds looks at previous experiences and you develop a negative internal dialogue.

• A lack of alignment and clarity between the two halves of the mind creates problems.

Increasing alignment and congruency

So, your unconscious mind refers to the past, and your mind needs regular proof.

Therefore... to increase alignment…

you’ll need to create a history of actions, thoughts, behaviours, feelings and conversations to prove that you want what you say you want.

Four ways to increase alignment

1. Intention = Outcome

2. Affirmation – are you on purpose?

3. Visualise your desired outcome

4. Anchor your energy

1. Intention = Outcome

• Take ownership of making it happen.• A committed sales person will find multiple

ways and do whatever it takes to get the result and make it happen. They know that they cause their results.

• Intention and outcome increase congruency between the conscious and unconscious mind.

2. Affirmation – are you on purpose?

• Affirmations: statements intentionally created and repeated to align oneself to the purpose of the sales appointment.

• Are you making a sales appointment for you or the client? The client.

• Be present with the client by re-aligning yourself with an affirmation so that you rid yourself of random thoughts.

3. Visualise the desired outcome

• See your goals clearly and specifically before you set out for them.

• Hold them in your mind until they become part of you.

This reaffirms the importance of your goal to your unconscious mind, and your conscious/ unconscious minds will begin to work together.

4. Anchor your energy

Anchoring is a movement that triggers an emotional response.

Tennis star of the ‘80s Ivan Lendl tapped his racket on his heels when he won a major point. When receiving he tapped his racket on his heels again to elicit responses of all the previous great performances.

Carry your good performance from one successful sale to another.
