The Joget is the most popular folk dance in Malaysia. In Malacca, it is better known as Chakunchak. This dance is performed at cultural festivals, weddings and other social functions. It was associated with the Portuguese in Malacca during the era of the spice trade. It is performed by couples who combine fast hand and leg movements. The music is played with instruments such as the Western violin, the Arab rebana and the south East Asian gong.

The Kuda Kepang dance is a very interesting dance from Johor. It has strong links with spirit possession, and often dancers go into a trance-like state. This dance is performed by 9 to 15 dancers who are seated astride mock horses. They dance to traditional music played with indigenous instruments such gongs, tambourines and angklung.

The Sumazau is a traditional dance from Sabah. In this dance, rows of male and female dancers face each other with outstretched arms. The arm gestures, likened to that of a bird as it floats gracefully, are performed at shoulder level with gentle bending of the elbow and wrist. The music is provided by gongs of different sizes. What do three hearts, eight arms and one huge brain add up to? An octopus, a creature that can do

amazing things.

Octopuses are very extremely intelligent. If an octopus is threatened by a predator, such as a

shark or a bird, it can use some incredible skills to get away. Octopuses don’t have teeth or sharp claws

to defend themselves. Instead, they use cleverer ways to fool their attackers. Octopuses like to hide

themselves in the sand on the bottom of the ocean floor. The octopus is like a chameleon because it

can change the colour of its skin to match the sand.

Some octopuses like to stay in shallow water where there are rocks and coral. Octopuses are

invertebrates, meaning they don’t have backbones, they can squeeze themselves into small spaces

between the rocks to get out of reach of their predators.

Another way an octopus escapes is by shooting ink. An octopus uses a part of its body called a

siphon to shoot ink into the water. The ink forms a cloud that hides the octopus. By the time the ink

clears and the predator can see again, the octopus has swum away. It’s very much like a magician

doing a vanishing act.

3. How are an octopus and a chameleon alike?

A They are both invertebrates.

B They both have sharp claws.

C They both like to hide on the ocean floor.

D They can both change the colour of their skin.
