m-z gratitude report
TRANSCRIPT
We continue our “gratitude report” with the letter “M” as
we share ways we have been blessed through the efforts of
parents, teachers, staff, kind supporters, and our students.
This is an opportunity for us to highlight well-known and
obscure facts about the Christ-filled education we provide
our students. Sharing news with you would not have been
possible without the support of local advertisers who
allowed us to provide six issues of this publication —
without cost to BRLS or TLCDC.
We will always be thankful for the support of__

M-Z Gratitude Report
Mixin’ & Fixin’ is a cooking club, meeting twice a
month after school, and open to students in grades 3-
5. Under the watchful eyes of club sponsors, students
rotate responsibilities as they master food handling
and cooking skills. Skills they are eager to practice at
home! (It’s a win-win situation for students and their
families.)
Music is fun for everyone! Preschool-grade 8
students are exposed to a variety of instruments,
choral arrangements, and styles of music to enhance
their educational experiences. Music education has
been found to improve academic performance
because it teaches the important lessons of discipline,
perseverance, and work ethic.
Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is
the greatest treasure in the world.
Martin Luther
Easily our most active
campus organization, NJHS
members (grades 6-8) are
involved with organizing
school-wide events, as well
as those just for their junior
high classmates. Whether
it’s Red Ribbon Week or
our school-wide recycling
program, NJHS members
take charge!
Over 2,400 schools of the Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod celebrate God’s gift of Lutheran Schools
annually. At BRLS, we fill NLSW with special
activities, dress up days, and other events. The theme
changes each year, but the overall focus is on
celebrating in fun ways. We are truly thankful that
God has blessed a Christian school system that dates
back to the 1840’s.
Plan to celebrate with us: January 31-February 5!
If we are having classes, we are having an Open
House! Invite your family, friends, neighbors, and
co-workers to drop by. They will receive a personal
tour of our campus, visit with students and teachers,
and a full packet of information about our school.
We will tell them all about TLCDC, too!
Outdoor Education is a great team-building
experience for 7th grade students — no matter the
weather. An overnight trip in the fall to Twin Lakes
at Florence, Mississippi (near the city of Jackson)
allows students to participate in activities that
develop their leadership skills.

Trinity Lutheran Child Development Center’s mission is to actively nurture, support and encourage children and their families in their walk with Christ. We view each child as a unique, precious Child of God.
You don’t need to be a professional photographer to
send us any photos you take of students, parents or
teachers at school, on field trips, at sporting events,
and more! (Don’t be shy. We will crop and correct
any photos before use.)
We post photographs on our two school and eight
other public-access websites, on Facebook, in print
ads, in our BRLS yearbook, and include them in
thank you notes and letters to school supporters. E-
mail photographs as you take them to
[email protected]. We truly
appreciate all of the photographs received!
According to research, Physical Education has
become even more important to all children.
Physically active and educated children are more
likely to thrive academically and socially. And, P.E.
at our school teaches Kindergarten-grade 8 students
how to incorporate safe and healthy activities into
their lives.

Need Holiday Childcare?
Playgrounds can be as important as physical
education classes for student health! Undirected play
has been shown to help children adjust to the school
setting and even to enhance children’s learning
readiness, learning behaviors, peer interactions, and
problem-solving skills. Volunteers helped to make
our BRLS and TLCDC playgrounds safer for this
school year. Thank you!
Plus Portals is where a parent can find specific
information about a child, his/her classmates and
classroom, and other restricted-access information.
Class newsletters and messages are e-mailed to BRLS
parents, but we all find parenting simpler when we
know everything so regularly visit Plus Portals.
Older students, in particular, can keep up with
assignments and deadlines by accessing the site.
Need an answer now? BRLS can provide a quick
answer if you…
1. Check one of our websites. We regularly post
information and documents for referral.
2. E-mail or phone your child’s teacher. Each
provided contact information to families at the
start of the year.
3. Want an answer right away? Phone BRLS and
use your child’s classroom extension to leave a
message for the teacher. The phone won’t ring,
but a message light will blink and teachers will
return phone calls, when they can, during or at the
end of the school day.
4. Phone the school office, send a fax, or send an e-
mail. We will contact a teacher on your behalf.
TLCDC can provide a quick answer if you...
1. Phone their office (direct line) phone number.
2. Send an e-mail.
3. Check the website or the bulletin board in the
main hallway for posted information.

Q is for QUICK ANSWERS R is for
“READING, ‘RITING & ‘RITHMETIC
..AND RELIGION”
Did you know that the original phrase “the Three
Rs” (reading, writing and arithmetic) came from a
speech made by the Lord Mayor of London in 1795?
Back then it was believed that mastering the three
R’s was the essential foundation of education.
The colonies of New England had a different view.
In the 1800’s the curriculum in common schools
(elementary) was summed up as “the Four Rs.”
Religion was added as an all-important subject.
Learning from, and about, the Bible was recognized
then, as it is now, as the foundation for a solid
Christian life.
Lessons based upon the Bible are taught formally and
informally on a daily basis on our campus. Prayer is
an important part of those lessons as well. We teach
even our youngest children to sincerely (and joyfully)
pray before snacks and lunch.

It’s different for every student. The annual Science
Fair is… Uhh, fun? Uhh, a challenge? Uhh, a
wonderful learning experience? Uhh, preparation for
high school?
Actually, it’s all of the above! Learning about
science is at the heart of any science fair project. A
student chooses a scientific question to answer. After
using the library and Internet to search for
information, the student performs an experiment and
draws conclusions. Then he or she presents his or her
results to teachers and classmates using a display
board and a written report. Next, it is all about
communication — presenting the project, and
answering questions, in ways that will impress a
science fair judge. Our fair judges? They are
community volunteers, with science backgrounds —
many from Albemarle Corporation, a chemical
company, as well as knowledgeable BRLS parents
and TLC members.
Scouting is alive and well at Baton Rouge Lutheran
School! Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
meet at either BRLS or the Trinity Oaks property for
their meetings and activities. Sponsored by Trinity
Lutheran Church, these scouting groups include, but
are not limited to, BRLS students and BRLS parent
leaders.
Sports are available nearly the entire school year for
3rd-8th grade students. Volleyball, flag football,
basketball, cheerleading, and track-and-field athletics
exist for girls, boys, or both. BRLS teams compete
against other Christian or small private school teams,
playing both home and away games. Student athletes
rely on parent volunteers to serve as coaches and for
transportation to and from games.
Technology is, at times, both a gift and a challenge
for BRLS and TLCDC. We use the technology tools
we have at our disposal to record vital information
and communicate important messages. We don’t
always get it right, but we do keep trying!
More than a few trees have been saved by increased
technology use. We aim to save even more — and
you can help.
Let us hear from you if an address or phone number
changes, when a child needs to start riding “our”
school bus, or you need to share any news about your
family that we should be aware of or challenges we
can help with. Accurate information is an absolute
necessity when it comes to technology — and we
don’t want you to miss anything!
Computers and other devices are amazing, but
nothing is as amazing as the power of prayer.
Prayer is pure communication with our Father in
Heaven.

United in many ways
to reach many goals
through the year,
parent volunteers and
school staff work
together on the annual
auction. This great
social event and major
fundraiser helps fund
far more than tuition
alone makes possible.
Bringing parents and supporters closer together, there
are always many, many opportunities to get involved.
It takes everyone contributing auction items and
working together to have a financially successful
event.
Save the date and plan to attend our 12th auction!
Walk through the school and check out our hallways
and classrooms. Student-created visual art is
everywhere! It is what makes our school appear to be
what it is: full of joy and learning! Preschool-
Kindergarten students experience art throughout their
regular school day, linking art to classroom themes.
First-eighth grade students experience art as a
separate class. Working with different media and
studying art history helps students appreciate the
beauty they can find everywhere they look.
Volunteers rock! They make our copies, trim our
laminated art, drive for some field trips, submit our
coupons and UPC’s for bonus funds, assist with our
book and science fairs, make our take-home reading
programs possible, and generally help get everything
done. If you have any spare time, please consider
offering to help. There are tasks that must be
complete on campus, but there are also things you
can do at home to support teachers who strive to
provide an “Education Anchored In Christ” to all.

We can’t say it enough! You are always welcome at
Baton Rouge Lutheran School and Trinity Lutheran
Child Development Center. We ask that you pray for
our ministry, that we may serve Him to the best of
our abilities and to His Glory.
If you ever have any questions about our programs or
processes, don’t hesitate to ask. We believe in open
communication!
The BRLS yearbook is meant to record, highlight
and commemorate the school year. School staff and
junior high students work throughout the year —
gathering photos and information — to make each
edition memorable and meaningful!
All the other “xtraz” just signifies the end — of this
newsletter, our creativity, and (you may think) our
ability to spell “real words.” We truly hope you
can appreciate just how blessed BRLS and
TLCDC continue to be. We are truly grateful for
the blessings He provides — and for your
continued involvement and support.
