As the University starts a new academic year, delve into a diverse array of musical experiences this autumn.
Discover new music as machine-influenced American minimalism rubs shoulders with dramatic celebrations of British legends with piano and percussion duo Siwan Rhys and George Barton. Immerse yourself in vivid electronic soundscapes with BEAST and explore the deliberately idiosyncratic combination of instruments with the ‘meticulously nuanced, witty and chic’ The Hermes Experiment.
Celebrate the power of the human voice in concerts featuring internationally renowned singers and choirs. Join one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, Tenebrae in themes of travel and journeying, and glimpse into the musical life of Antwerp at the time of the painter of Jan de Beer with the Binchois Consort. Conjure up everyday magic with words by master poet Michael Donaghy in new songs by Martin Suckling performed by Marta Fontanals-Simmons. Join us in welcoming internationally renowned conductor, composer, and singer, Bob Chilcott to his new role as Principal Conductor of Birmingham University Singers in a performance
that evokes fresh falling snow and ethereal northern lights in Nordic music for Christmas and Advent.
What better way to enjoy world-class chamber music than in the intimate surroundings of the Barber Institute’s beautiful art-deco concert hall. Witness some of the world’s finest pianists and keyboard players with the return of the Birmingham International Piano Festival. Submerge yourself in a sensuous all French programme with the Primrose Piano Quartet, take time out of your day and spend a lunch hour with ‘the classiest brass ensemble in Britain’ Onyx Brass, and as Christmas draws near, deck the halls and attend lavish balls in music for A Georgian Country House Christmas.
Finally, as scores of new students arrive bringing with them a wealth of new talent to the city, see ensembles of all shapes and sizes, including scintillating jazz miniatures to orchestral greats such as Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and music that is guaranteed to lift your spirits in Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony.

The Hermes Experiment is a contemporary quartet made up of harp, clarinet, voice and double bass. Immerse yourself in their deliberately idiosyncratic combination of instruments and discover brand new music. Expect vocal acrobatics and cumulative patterns in minimalist works by Meredith Monk whilst Oliver Leith’s music sinks and melts as the harpist slowly detunes throughout. Music by Errollyn Wallen reflects the tragic nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016, whilst traditional and ancient is blended with the new in Misha Mullov-Abbado’s jazz infused take on an English folk song, and Robin Haigh's sugary and modern Kalimotxo.

The Sam Leak Trio perform contemporary jazz with a gospel-tinged and folk-inspired, freedom and abandon. Conjuring up the joy and emotion typified by Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett's 1960s trios, the ensemble maintains a sense of the tradition whilst performing music that is very much rooted in the present. Featuring Simon Read on double bass, and Will Glaser on drums, the band perform a mixture of Leak's compositions and lesser known works from their favourite musicians.

Music from Antwerp in the time of Jan de Beer
In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century Antwerp was home to an array of fine and distinctive painters including Metsys, Patinir and Jan de Beer. However, the town was no less distinguished as a musical centre, with composers such as Ockeghem, Obrecht, Barbireau, and Waelrant finding employment in the city at various points. Glimpse into Antwerp’s soundscape at the same time that de Beer was producing his refined and detailed panels, the focus of an exhibition at the Barber Institute this autumn.
