FROM THE PASTOR…
As you know we're into the Year of Faith...I'm
sure you have been reading in the bullen and spe-
cial inserts about the acvies available for you at
the parish and the Mission. On a personal level, if I
look deep within my heart and am completely hon-
est with you, I haven't quite figured out exactly
what more or diff erent acvies I’d like to do for
this Year of Faith. I am supporve of this endeavor
by the Church, and who would ever be against the
Year of Faith? It's like living in America and being
against apple pie, baseball and Fourth of July pic-
nics. Sll, the call from the Holy Father to deepen
our faith is really necessary. So I guess, for me per-
sonally, I am going to try to make me for more per-
sonal prayer. I am also going to try to plug into as
many events and acvies as I can to deepen my
knowledge of the faith. Even though I am a priestdoesn't mean I don't need to grow educaonally in
my faith.
I heard a priest not long ago last year give a talk to
other priests, and he said it dawned on him that he
was talking more about Jesus than talking to Je-
sus. It was a humorous line, but it made me look at
my own prayer life. His words called me to task for
a deeper relaonship with Christ. We all know from
scripture that God’s mind is not our mind. For God,all things are possible. I have this experience over
and over again, where I suddenly realize that God is
doing for me what I cannot do for myself. I cannot
give away what I do not have. So on a personal lev-
el, I am going to make a commitment to try to have
more prayer me with God. I want to work on a
closer friendship and love of Christ. So, that's my
year of faith bale plan. Now, if any of you faithful
parishioners have any ideas or suggesons for me in
this Year of Faith, I am more than willing to lis-ten. Now I ask you, what is your plan for this Year of
Faith?
God bless!
Fr. David Gaa, OFM
Pastor

FINDING GODThe splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity,
march right up off the pages of Mahew's Gospel and
into our churches today. Mahew alone tells us this
grand and seducve story so that we might see the light
and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfill-
ment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to
the magi's home country and beyond, right down the
ages to us.
We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our
patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child
the king of the universe and light of the world. Like themagi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like
them, we return to our home by a new route.
We are asked to come away from this fesve season
ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God
among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be
found, to be aenve and surprised and ready to bow
down in adoraon and to off er our gis.Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

he descubierto exactamente qué acvidades adicionales o
Aunque yo sea
Padre David Gaa,
Párroco

ENCUENTRO CON DIOS
Los espléndidos Reyes Ma-
gos–destellantes, majes-
tuoso y solemnes–, salen
hoy de las páginas de Ma-
teo y van rumbo a nuestra
iglesia. Solamente Mateo

The Community of Mission San Luis Rey
The Mission San Luis Rey Community is rooted in the values andspirituality of St. Francis of Assisi. The “Year of Faith” gives all of us apraccal opportunity to be truly present to one another by listeningwithout judgment, speaking in kindness and addressing diff erences withcare. Faith is a verb that can be demonstrated in our day-to-day acons. Aquote aributed to St. Francis sums it up: “Preach the Gospel and if necessary use words.”
The Year of Faith is a “call” for a full Church year to examine, proclaim, and commit to a public witness of our faith. This call is the very mission of the Church. Pope Benedict, in his proclamaon of the year states:
“All people have a right to know Jesus Christ and his Gospel: and
ChrisƟ ans, all ChrisƟ ans – priests, religious and lay faithful –
have a corresponding duty to proclaim the Good News.”
Pope Benedict, Synod on Evangelizaon closing 10/26/12
The Community of Mission San Luis Rey is formed from these six communies:
• Franciscan Friars of Old Mission San Luis Rey
• Mission San Luis Rey Parish
• The Retreat Center of Old Mission San Luis Rey
•
Old Mission Montessori School• The Cemetery of Old Mission San Luis Rey
• Franciscan School of Theology (September 2013)
Each of our communies makes up the greater Catholic Faith Community of Mission San Luis Rey. Each of ourcommunies has a place in our process of understanding what the Year of Faith can mean for us.
For each liturgical season, we will publish a calendar of the Year of Faith celebraons and events that are going tobe held in our communies. Other events and celebraons not part of the Year of Faith will be listed separately.
The Tau Cross, the Year of Faith logo, had a strong appeal for St. Francisof Assisi. He aended the IV Lateran Council called by Pope Innocent IIIin 1215. The Pope made a dramac call for a general mobilizaon of Christendom for conversion and penance. Obedient to the Pope, St.Francis signed the Tau Cross on his tunic with a piece of chalk. The shapeof the Tau Cross reminded St. Francis of the Cross of Jesus Christ. Itwould become his favorite symbol, reminding him and his friars of theirvocaon to preach penance and conversion to Christ.-P. Julian 11/8/12
