By Our Staff ReporterThe construction of a storm

water drain along Giri Street(T. Nagar) is affecting the day-to-day life of its residents.

Soil that has been dug outfrom the 6-foot deep and 3-footwide trench has been dumpedon the roadside thereby block-ing the carriageway and caus-ing hindrance to pedestriansand motorists.

A nearby resident said that,

Giri Street residents affected by ongoingstorm water drain work

though the officials had prom-ised to remove the debris, ithas been lying there for a longwhile.

The road is a thoroughfarefor school students and officegoers who are the most af-fected.

When this reporter spoke toa Chennai Corporation officialoverseeing the work, he saidthat the debris will be clearedas soon as the digging work is

finished.‘Since we are digging deep,

care is being taken to ensurethat telephone cables, EBcables and sewage lines pass-ing underground are notdamaged during the work’, hesaid.

He further said that an av-enue tree accidentally got cutdown while operating a JCB.

The work is expected to get

What sort of a person was M. L. Vasanthakumari? Hermuch-talented multi-lingual movie star daughter Srividyaspoke about her mother ‘on camera’ in the 60-minute TV film‘Thirai Vaanil Oru Isai Thenee’ made by this writer during theearly 1990s and telecast over two weekly installments byDoordarshan Kendra, Madras.

In it Srividya said, “My mother was highly supportive andappreciative of other musicians and film singers, especiallywomen, even though she did not know them at all. If she hearda song sung well on radio or TV or anywhere else, she went outof the way to trace the singer and talk to her on the phone inthe most encouraging and endearing terms. She also spoke insuch glowing terms to young and new film music composers.’

This writer found MLV warm, friendly and humble. She toldhim how once she and her husband Krishnamurthy went toAVM Studios in Kodambakkam by a ‘jutka’ (horse carriage) fora song recording. What a far cry from today’s singers who insiston air-conditioned cars and similar sound recording studios!

M. L. Vasanthakumari is no more but her songs shall liveforever. Life may be short but art is eternal …

NADHASWARAM LEGEND T. N. RAJARATNAM PILLAIWhen movies began to talk Tamil in 1931 with H. M. Reddi’s

‘Kalidas’ and when ‘Valli Thirumanam’ (1933) directed by P. V.Rao (today totally forgotten) featuring the first star of SouthIndia, T. P. Rajalakshmi, became a super hit, Tamil filmproduction began to run on top gear.

Many moneybags ventured into movies for quick profitsbesides the attractive fringe benefits. Tamil filmmakers madea beeline to the world of classical Carnatic music for actors whocould sing in their own voices. The system of ‘behind the screen’voice-lending - ‘play-back’ singing – did not come into vogue untilthe end of the 1930s. That was how noted musicians like MusiriSubramania Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam, V.V. Satagopan,M. M. Dhandapani Desikar, Kalakkad Ramanarayana Iyer,Vidwan Srinivasan, Nagercoil K. Mahadevan, KothamangalamSeenu, Mysore T. Chowdaiah, M. S. Subbulakshmi, N. C. Va-santhakokilam, C. Honnappa Bhagavathar, MathirimangalamNatesa Iyer and such others acted in films.

Not many are aware that the Sangeetha BhishmaSemmangudi Srinivasa Iyer was first contracted by the moviemogul AV. Meiyappan to play Nandanar in a film he hadplanned, but Semmangudi Mama withdrew because his fatherthreatened to jump into the family well if he ‘demoralized’himself acting in movies!

In the list of the great musicians who acted in movies was thenagaswaram maestro Thiruvavaduthurai N. RajaratnamPillai. He appeared in a solitary Tamil film ‘Kalamegam’ (1940)directed by the American Tamil filmmaker, Ellis R. Dungan.

Ellis R. Dungan came to India in 1935 as a young man in hisearly twenties and left in 1950. During these fifteen years, hemade many hits and classics without knowing Tamil, thelanguage or its culture. Interestingly his films were based onHindu mythology, epics, folk myth and folklore. The list in-cludes ‘Sathi Leelavathi’, ‘Sakunthalai’, ‘Meera’, ‘Dhaasi Penn’,‘Seemanthani’, ‘Valmiki’ (Telugu), ‘Iru Sahotharargal’, ‘Ponmudi’, ‘Manthiri Kumari’ and ‘Kalamegam’.

T.N. Rajaratnam was cast in the title role as Kavi Kalamegam,a legendary Tamil poet who had the gift of his words comingtrue. In the cast were the noted stars of those days SP. L.Dhanalakshmi, N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, singing starC.V. V. Panthulu, musician T. V. Namasivayam, K. R. VenugopalaSarma, Kali N. Ratnam, P. R. Mangalam and P. S. Gnanam.

SP.L. Dhanalakshmi hailed from a family of traditionalentertainers in Thanjavur and was active in movies during the1930s and early 1940s. She was the aunt of the latter-daycelebrated star T. R. Rajakumari. The noted movie-dancersJyothilakshmi and Jayamalini are her daughters.

During the making of ‘Kalamegam’, SP.L. brought herstunningly attractive 18-year-old niece Rajayee to meet Dunganfor a break in movies. However, he could offer her only a minorcomedy role in the film, which the aunt and niece politelydeclined. Within a year, the niece emerged as a top star of southIndia under the name T. R. Rajakumari with Indian film pioneerK. Subramanyam’s hit film ‘Kaccha Devayani’ (1941)!

Suicide is Good (Sometimes)Ram Singh a bus driver who was always on the run until Miss Delhi

got into his vehicle one night. He lost his sanity and the angel lost hervirginity in an act that stupid Macaulay called an offence of rapeunder Section 376 of his infamous I.P.C.

Ram Singh was, with his invited 5 guests on the rape-dream run, made a State guest in the capital ‘s Tihar Jail which, not having aprovision to pamper these guests with air-conditioned accommoda-tion, had a grilled opening to let the good air in and the foul air out.

Ram Singh did not like all the pow-vow going on in the courtand perhaps did not like the food or his other three cell mates andsuddenly decided to call it a night. He engineered a rope out of hisbedsheet or shirt and made a beautiful noose as recompense forwhat, a few months earlier, had led to the death of a good girl at thehands of a pack of beasts led by him.

Though, allegedly, both his arms had steel support because ofsome previous injury and though he had the iron will to deflower thetender helpless girl, the possibility of being hanged a la friend Gurudrove this driver nuts and he did one more foolish thing in life to endhis array of mistakes. How he climbed the 8-feet high grill is left tothe Sherlockism of the the investigator to unravel but since he hadto look up, the good old Sikh God must have helped him and our driverfriend must have reached the pearly gates in the haven of peace.

In a recent laugh column in the Times Of India, under the heading‘With the Times’, there was a gem which said that a chap like ourRam Singh died and, at the interview by the Reception Committee, the new arrival was aghast at a palace having been allotted to aparticular chap while, for the billions of others since life on earth hadbegun, mere one room tenements made of leaves and thatch hadbeen given.

The new entrant asked “Why the palace for him?”“Only one lawyer since time began deserved it and if you show me

another we will build another!”Ram Singh too was given a thatched shed because he cannot rise

to the challenge. Thank you TOI. The next palace will be for me, say 20+ years

hence when my tenancy on Mother Earth expires, according to anastrologer. I am in no hurry.

Manickam Street’s residents face ordealSir, Both ends of Manickam Street (West Mambalam) are used as

an open toilet by passersby and nearby vendors thereby posing ahealth hazard to the residents of the street.

There is a foul smell throughout the day, especially at the roadjunctions.

Further, street dog menace is also rampant on our street and itspopulation has been on the rise. Garbage bins are also not being clearedon a regular basis.

Repeated appeals from our Association to Corporation Ward 135have only fallen on deaf ears.

I request the authorities to take immediate steps to address theabove mentioned issues faced by the residents of our street.— T.V.Bashyam, 3, Manickam Street, West Mambalam.
