DATE: 01/09/2015 Hello Students, Parents, Carers and local Community members,

Attendance Attendance remains one of the major reasons why many of our students are not succeeding with their education. Missing lessons breaks the learning cy-cle that is in place and most students find it difficult to understand the lesson content or assessment when they have missed crucial foundation lessons. Unfortunately, the attendance barometer is still fall-ing this Term and is currently sitting at 80.1%. Our expectation is that every Student

Senior Schooling News Queensland Core Skills Test The Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS) is a set of four exams held over two days for year twelve students. This test is compulsory for students wishing to attain a QCE and optional for students who are not OP Eligible. This year we have five students sitting the test, two OP Eligible with University Pathways in mind and three non-OP Eligible students who are keeping university op-tions open whilst focussing more on a trade, appren-ticeship pathway. It is great to see our students taking on this challenge and really taking the time to consider their futures. I wish them the best of luck.

QCE and SET Planning Evening Also taking the time to consider their futures are our year ten students. On Tuesday 25th August our annual Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan Evening was held. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students, parents and family members who attended on the evening. If you were unable to attend with your year ten student please contact the school to make an appointment to complete your child’s SET Plan. These plans involve developing a plan for each student to enter into year eleven and twelve with a career focus. The plan in-cludes subject selection for 2016 and is vital for every year ten student to complete this term before work ex-perience. Verification of Authority Subjects Term three sees our year twelve Authority Subject stu-dent’s work be sent away for verification. This process is where panellists look at the work of our students and

compare it to the standards set out in the syllabus and ensure that we are matching our standards to those of the region and the state. It is vital that our students put their best work forward this term to support the grades awarded and allow them to achieve the best standards for their Ops. Assessment Time We have again reached that time of the term where many students are working on their assessment tasks. Please ensure that if you have any concerns about your child’s progress you contact the teacher or myself. There will not be a report card for term three but teach-ers can provide feedback to you over the phone or in a meeting if you wish. Argus Junior Writer Congratulations to Claudia Brooks (Year ten student) who has taken up the opportunity to be a junior writer for The Argus. Look out for her first article which gives a student’s view on assessment. You may be surprised at the perspective she presents and I think all will find it a good read!

It is a very busy time for our school and students and I wish all students luck and encourage both students and parents to use this time to consider and discuss your future options and set yourself some goals for positive future. Kylie Stanger Head of Department – Senior School

School Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning

Being a Learner in All Settings Being in high school means that students are learning in a range of environments and in different ways. Throughout the school we have a number of specialist rooms that students work in, including the Kitchens, the Science Labs, the Agriculture Centre, Manual Arts and the Drama Room. We also have a number of outdoor areas where students learn and, of course, classrooms. Changing environments can be a very positive thing and allows students to learn things in different, often more practical and engaging ways. It is therefore very important that students remember to be a learner in each of these settings to ensure that they can get the most out of each opportunity and allow their fellow stu-dents to learn as well.

SETPLAN EVENING

Helping out at the Show At the Mount Morgan show, eight Year 12 students woke up extra early to be at the show grounds by 7:30 am. They took time out of their day to help in the ring, handle prize money, collect tickets and work around horses to hand out 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons. These students volunteered their time to help the community and secure a donation towards the school formal.

Football Results Week 7 Rockhampton High defeated our 7/8 team 34-32. 9/10 team was defeated by St Brendans.

On Wednesday 19 August 2015 Miss Webb’s Early Childhood Studies class visited the local Red Frog 4 Early

Childhood Education Centre. While there MMSHS students conducted action research as part of their assess-

ment task. They interviewed centre staff which resulted in students developing an informed view into the many

facets involved in the Early Childhood industry today. Students also got involved in some of the activities and

experiences that make up a day in the life of a childcare worker.
