Steps are being taken toenable customers to booktravel and movie tickets insome post-offices in the city.

One of them is AshokNagar Post-office on AshokPillar Road where a specialcounter was opened lastweek to enable customers torecharge mobiles of privatetelecom service providers.The same counter will offerbooking of travel and movietickets.

The new services are be-ing offered through a tie-upwith Delhi-based Beam Ser-vices.

biles, both pre and post-paid, of

private telecom service pro-viders at the special counteropened last week in AshokNagar Post-Office, Ashok Pil-lar Road.

The Post Master told Mam-balam Times that the PostalDepartment has tied up withBeam Services, a Delhi basedorganization, to offer the facil-ity.

A tie-up with BSNL is alsoplanned, he added.

Customers can also obtainDTH recharge coupons.

All the services offered arefree of charge.

The Post Master said thatthose who become membersof Beam Service can pay util-ity bills and shop using the fa-cility as a debit card throughSMS.

The special counter is openfrom 9.30 a.m to 4 p.m on alldays except Sundays and Gov-ernment holidays.

Every evening, when I switch on the TV, I straightawayland on Asianet in spite of its generous lard of the goodthings of the market without which one feels lost in thisbountiful and beauty-filled world and feel honoured that thegoodies of life are brought before me as though I am in afabulous supermarket which I have heard of but nevershopped in.

One paint company has made a vow to spread sunshineand colour in the lives of the viewers by showing an olddecrepit man, a retired teacher, going to seed sitting on thesteps of his house, when an old student approaches him.The chap bows and touches his feet whereupon the oldiesays, “I am old and so is my house”. The rich-looking youngman immediately promises to take care of both. And hedoes it with the special brand of paint which makes hishouse sparkle. The oldie, overwhelmed by happiness, trav-els back 20 years. How wonderful! He must have been ahumane, loving teacher who had made even the mostfractious student attend his class.

I did not have such a good fortune in my 8th standard inthe rural high school where I studied before defecting toMadras. Chandu Mash, my class teacher with a gruffexterior, was the biggest customer of cane sticks, in thewielding of which he was miles ahead of the rest of theteacherdom.

One bad morning he threw a challenge, “What is theopposite of big?”. After 20 petrified mouths gaped and thecane did yeomen service by its swish proving its worth, hehad a ghost of a smile as though he had won a bet that noteven one of the students deserved to be in his class.

My turn came and, after a silent vow to break tencoconuts at the local Bhagavathi temple, I took a dozenbreaths and spluttered “Small”. He appeared shocked, butthe cane did not meet my palm and continued its sway until39 other palms were seared.

Bhagavathi got her 10 plus 2 coconuts as bonus thatevening and Chandu Mash became my hero. When, at theend of the school year, I joined the M.C.C. in Madras, his wasthe only face I remembered and still remember at my 78-plus age. He must have gone to his Maker without the helpof a paint company or a once beaten student.
