New machine to print ticketsbooked online

Very soon, commuters onChennai’s suburban railnetwork can book a ticket ontheir mobile phones and get aprintout of the ticket from adevice at the railway station. TheSouthern Railway is installingmachines at stations across thecity that will make ticketprocurement simpler for dailycommuters. Currently, thosebooking mobile tickets throughthe UTS application on Androidneed to show the digital ticket tocheckers at various stations. Butthat has limitations, especiallywhen the phone runs out ofcharge. Also, the app allows acommuter to book a paperlessticket only when he is within aradius of 50 m. to 2 km. from thestation. This is where the newmachine, designed by Centre forRailway Information Systemsand which uses OpticalCharacter Recognitiontechnology, comes in handy. Themachine lets a commuter book aticket from inside the station.

In the mobile-ticketingapplication, the user has tochoose the option ‘book andprint’. After booking the ticket,an SMS will be sent to the mobilenumber on which the bookinghas been made. The new devicehas a slot where the phone can

be inserted for the machine toscan the ticket code. Once read,a paper ticket will come out of aseparate slot. Currently,Southern Railway has installedthree machines, each costing Rs.50,000, in Chennai Beach station.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

MARGAZHI MUSIC - MOVIES MUSINGS - 1(In this new series, film songs with Carnaticraga base which

became popular hits - and still continue to bepopular- will bediscussed and their ‘back story’ - a familiarHollywood expres-sion- will be narrated.)

Tamil Film Music in the early decades, and more preciselyfilm songs, were based on Carnatic Music and HindustaniMusic and somesong-tunes were ‘lifted’ from popular Hindi andBengali film tunes, copyright laws be damned! If film music ispopular today, a goodpercentage of the credit should go to thecomposer par excellence, revered to this day as ‘ThamizhThiagaiyah’, Papanasam Sivan.

Interestingly, his name is a misnomer. He was neither fromPapanasamnor was his name Sivan! He was PolagamRamaiah and that was why heused the name ‘Ramadasa’ ashis signature (or ‘muddhirai’) in his kirthanai compositions.

‘Maa Ramanan Uma Ramanan…….’ in ‘Hindolam’ raga issung even todayregularly in music concerts by the top of thecream musicians of bothsexes. The song, written and composedby Papanasam Sivan, was first sung by him andhis discipleand relative S. S. Mani as off-screen - background songagainstthe credit titles in a 1936 movie K. Subramanyam’s‘NaveenaSathaaram’. During the early thirties the commonpractice andconvention of such a song in a stage play seepedinto movies. In astage-drama, before the curtain goes up, thecast and crew and othersassociated with it stand behind thescreen and sing an invocation songseeking the Almighty’sblessings. This convention made its way intoearly Tamil filmsand the lyrics of such prayer song included wordsseeking theblessings of the Lord to be showered on the director, producer, and production company and all the king’s men and women!

‘Maa Ramanan’ was sung in such manner in the 1936 moviebehind thescreen by Sivan and Mani. During that period therelease of film songsas gramophone discs was not yet in vogueand consequently the 78-rpm disc could not be made. Sadindeed but so true…. Papanasam Sivan had this song againrendered excellently in K.Subramanyam’s musical box-officehit, ‘Seva Sadanam’ (1938) by M. S.Subbulakshmi, in hermovie debut, in her own inimitable way. Her ‘MaaRamanan’.became a hit song like many other songs in themoviecontributing to its box office success.

During those days this song became so popular thatprospectivebridegrooms calling on eligible girls’ homes, ‘viewmatrimony’, used toask the girl to render it. Well, there wasonly one ‘MS’ and theoften poor rendering of the song by theaspiring girls was used as aconvenient excuse by thebridegroom’s party to reject a girl with theboy whispering to hismother or sister, ‘’ MS madhiri illayey…!” Well, those were thedays, but the song is being rendered to this day by menandwomen at many concerts of Carnatic Music around the world...

LORD KRISHNA AND SAGE NARADA SINGTHYAGARAJA SWAMI’S COMPOSITIONS!

1934... Movies had begun to talkand singTamil, only threeyearsearlier in 1931 with ‘Kalidas’ produced in Bombay byArdeshir Iraniand directed by the sadly forgotten ‘Grand OldMan Of South IndianCinema’, H. M. Reddi. Tamil Cinemabegan to put on hues and colours after the phenomenalsuccess of ‘Valli Thirumanam’ (1933) whichfeatured the firstSouth Indian female movie star T. P. Rajalakshmi.jj

The Prince Charming of Classical Carnatic Music, a legendduring hislifetime, the legend that still lives after his saddemise, G. N.Balasubramaniam immortalised in his iconicinitials ‘GNB’ took his bowin movies in 1934 playing SageNarada, the patron saint of ClassicalMusic in ‘Bhama Vijayam’.Produced in Calcutta by Pioneer FilmCompany at Rs. 50,000,it had a revenue of ten lakh rupees! It wasdirected by theHollywood-trained Punjabi filmmaker Manik Lal Tandonwhodirected Tamil movies during those years.

‘My appreciation too for columnists’Sir, In a letter published in Mambalam Times

last week, a reader has deservedly appreciatedthe two long-time columnists Randor Guy andJ. S. Raghavan. They are no less than legendsfor the readers of Mambalam Times.

I would like to shower my share of appreciationon the columnists.

Not many would know that Randor Guy hadworked closely with M. S. Viswanathan (MSV)in writing English song lyrics for his Tamilmovies such as ‘Thavaputhalvan’, especiallythe song, ‘Love Is Fine Darling When You AreMine!’, which created history in Tamil cinema.

He has also produced a good number ofdocumentary films such as ‘Evils of drink’. Hisrich association with stalwarts in the filmindustry made him a full-time film historian. There was great joy in listening to his lectures, the privilege of which I had when I did my coursein journalism. His mellifluous flow in language, accent, modulation of voice and the art ofpresenting the subject in a chronological orderstill linger in my memory.

The seasoned humour writer J. S. Raghavan, chose the music season as the theme for hisfun-filled article last week. I look forward to hiscolumn every week. N. Vijayaraghavan, 18thAvenue, Ashok Nagar, Ph: 99626 64766

When will we learn?Sir, Thanks for publishing my letter ‘Junction

converted into garbage dump’ in MambalamTimes last week. It had an immediate impactas the accumulated garbage from Arcot Streetand Krishna Street (T. Nagar) junction wascleared immediately. Also, some GoodSamaritan has placed a couple of garlandedGod’s photos at the junction to deter the publicfrom dumping waste at the spot again.

But to my dismay I find that residents havestarted to dump garbage a few meters awayfrom the junction. I again reiterate that we soeasily complain about the inefficiency ofChennai Corporation when we ourselves areresponsible for lapses in our civic duties.

When will we learn? I appeal to the public todump garbage only in designated garbage binsas it is a major heath hazard to residents livingnearby. Muthiah, Vasanth Apartments,Krishna Street, T. Nagar

Weekly holiday will aid civic worksSir, The Chennai Fruits Commission Agents’

Association stated that the Anna FruitsMarket in Koyambedu will henceforth be closedon Sundays for maintenance. This is a welcomemove by the Association.

Fruits being perishable, proper maintenanceis a must to keep the market in a hygieniccondition. With the volume of rubbish generateddaily, a day’s closure for cleaning is indeed awelcome decision.

While the example set by the FruitsCommission Agents’ Association must beemulated, we urge that all shops and othercommercial establishments in T. Nagar mustclose for a day in a week to enable the civicagencies to undertake repair and other relatedwork in the area.

At present, the agencies are unable to carryout the work like removal of blocks in thesewer lines and the storm water drains duringday time and are forced to do the same duringnight. The work so done leaves much to bedesired. As a result, the residents bear thebrunt.

The closure of markets for a day will providethe much needed relief at least for a day in aweek to sort out civic problems. T. NagarResidents’ Welfare Associaction, 30,Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Barricades unneceesaary in UsmanRoad service lanes

Sir, Barricades have been placed along themargin close to the pavement in the servicelanes of Usman Road T. Nagar.

The barricades are further narrowing thealready narrow service lanes hampering thesmooth flow of traffic.

The space between the barricades and theplatform is misused for parking 2-wheelers.Further, they also provide space for roadsidehawkers to spread their wares thereby blockingthe way for pedestrians.

If the idea of placing barricades is toinconvenience pedestrians, it has beenachieved. K. Harihar, T. Nagar
