FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

February 7, 2016 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (ISAIAH 6:8) Every day – in little ways and in big ways – God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry or just someone to open a door for a stranger, God con-stantly provides doors of opportunity. The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

LIVING LENT Our faith groups start this week. You can still join if you are interested. You can attend any of the 6 sessions. Call France at 908-307-7879 to get the book and join a group.

THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY Cannot attend a Lenten Faith Group but want to learn how to explore mercy in your life with the Pope’s help? Contact France or the office to purchase The Holy Year of Mercy and read it on your own. Cost is $10. It is a self guided program with scripture, reflections and prompts for your own contemplation.

LENT, RECONCILIATION AND THE EASTER TRIDUUM Ash Wednesday is upon us! Tradition has us thinking about what we will “do” for Lent. Traditionally we think in terms of “giving up” some-thing: TV, food of some sort, cigarettes, wine, cursing, etc. To break a habit is difficult especially to make and keep the sacrifice for the entire season of Lent. Rising above the difficulty is what brings us closer to God if we recall the temptations of Satan that Jesus had to overcome during his time in the desert. This year instead of or in addition to “giving up”, think about “doing” something which can be equally as challenging. We have heard these suggestions before: extend a random act of kindness daily; be vocal in thanks and appreciation of our classmates, co-workers, family and others; sign up for “Best Lent Ever” at www.dynamiccatholic.com, and more. Another possibility is to think about participating in the parish-oriented Lenten activities that are listed in the bulletin, in particular attending the Community Rec-onciliation Service and actually making a confession. Wow! That’s really a hard one! A family member who had been away from the church for a very long time decided he needed to return to full participation. He entered the Confessional, blessed himself, and told the priest to “hang on; it’s going to be a bumpy ride”. It was worth his effort and he has been very active in his parish for more than a dec-ade now. Personally, I had been away from confession for some time and decided to end that drought in my life. Why? Because each time I left a Community Reconcilia-tion Service I felt incomplete. But, my justification was always that while I might take the Lord’s name in vain or occasionally miss Mass, I haven’t killed anyone or cheated on my husband. None of the biggies. Finally, though, I gave into the nag-ging whisper. Believe me, my mouth was dry and my palms were wet as I entered the Reconciliation Room, but I lived and felt refreshed when I left. Fr. Abraham is a kind Confessor and has helped me. At the Advent service, he had a visiting priest assist with confessions so that parishioners who were uncom-fortable seeing him could go to a stranger who doesn’t know their name. So, think about it. Regardless of your decision, though, I highly recommend participating in the Easter Triduum, the 3 days before Easter Sunday: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday (the Easter Vigil Mass). At St. John Neumann we commemo-rate the Triduum with the beautiful Mass of the Lord's Supper on the evening of Holy Thursday, continue on Good Friday with the Living Stations of the Cross in the afternoon and a solemn service with Holy Communion in the evening, and con-clude with the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday when the parched darkness of Lent ends with the blessings of fire and water as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and again sing “Gloria” and “Alleluia”. Church Center The next session for the First Eucharist students will be on

Saturday, February 20, at 3:30 p.m. in the Church Center. There will be a Parent Meeting held in the Church Center at 9:00 a.m. on February 21st.

2016 SOUPER BOWL OF CARING WEEKEND February 6 & 7 MORE THAN 25 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring be-gan with a simple prayer from a single youth group:

“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat." Since that day, more than $110 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. Be part of this movement that is sharing God’s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Weekend as you leave Mass. Our youth will greet you in the Narthex to collect your $ donations and cans of soup. This year we are collecting money for a food-related service project and St. John’s Social Ministry holiday food baskets. A local food pantry will receive the cans of soup collected.

JR HIGH SUNDAY SESSION & BAGS OF LOVE

Jr. High Sunday Session on Feb. 7, 2016

will begin after the 10:30AM Mass. The students will participate in “bags of love” brown bag food packing. These lunch bags will be donated to SHIP. This will include regular Sunday catechesis and the session will end at 1:30PM.

SHIP'S GALLEY SOUP KITCHEN

Our next service to the SHIP's Galley Soup Kitchen will be this Monday,

February 8. We have enough volun-teers to serve but are in need of cas-seroles and other food items. Please contact Anne Germino if you can as-sist at [email protected] or call the office. Thank you.

SOCIAL MINISTRY On February 7 we will begin our Easter food collection of grocery items. You, as Community were extremely generous during the Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives and we greatly appreciate it as do the clients we serve. Please continue this generosity through Easter. We also want to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who participated in these events. We have collected $354 in our Change for Change program, which we will continue after the Easter Season since we would like to see full participation in The Rice Bowl Project run by Religious Education. We believe that running both of these programs at the same time is asking too much of The Community. Please pray for the needy that we serve and for us in Social Ministry so that we may follow the direction of the Holy Spirit.

HUNGERING FOR THE JOURNEY “A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just.” Pope Francis

Join our parish community—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Throughout Lent we will pray, fast, learn and give as a way to reach out in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. Rice Bowl packets will be available in the Narthex and will be distributed at all catechetical gatherings this weekend. Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.

MONTHLY FAMILY CATECHESIS

THE CATHOLIC SPIRIT The annual drive to support our diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Spirit, is taking place during the month of February, National Catholic Press Month. Please sup-port their good work by using the envelope in your packet. Any amount you contrib-ute will show your support for the ministry of The Catholic Spirit and will be greatly appreciated. And please remember to take home a copy of the paper – it has a special role to play in your life as a practicing Catholic.

LENTEN INSTRUCTIONS – 2016 Lent allows each of us to let our Catholic tradition of fasting and abstaining be an important reminder of what it means to suffer or to be without. This liturgical season is a blessed opportunity for us to unite with our brothers and sisters who are hungry, poor, homeless, or living on the fringes of society and to draw near to all those who suffer from illness, affliction, addiction or other serious burden. The following is a reminder of the Lenten instructions to use as a guide as we unite with those who suffer, near and far. So that the Church of Metuchen may be spiritually one in a common ob-servance of Lent, the following days of fast and abstinence are to be observed by all Catholics of the Diocese who enjoy the blessings of good health.

1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. 3. From the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday until the cele-

bration of the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter fast is suggested so that, with uplifted and welcoming hearts, we may be ready to celebrate the joys of the Resurrection. This ancient tradition, intimately con-nected with the Rites of Holy Week and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, is encouraged, especially in those places baptizing catechumens at the Easter Vigil.

The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat. The obligation of fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them with-out good cause, would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other peni-tential act, or to abstain on another day. My faithful brothers and sisters, in our fasting and abstaining this Lent, I pray that we each may choose to embrace this small suffering rather than accept it with misery or complaint. For, if we are joyful in our Lenten observances, we will be granted an opportunity to more fully understand the true sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for all humanity by accepting death on the cross in order to gain our eternal salvation. +Most Rev. Paul G. Bootkoski Bishop of Metuchen

Parish News SUNDAY REFLECTION: Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

"Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch." ROMAN LECTIONARY: Luke 5: 1-11 And while [Jesus] was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. COMMON LECTIONARY: Luke 9: 28-36 (37-43a) Think big - but act small . . . The newspaper comic strip Dilbert is cartoonist Scott Adams' take on the ab-surdities of the work place. In a recent episode, the slow-witted, incompetent, "pointy-haired" boss is trying - unsuccessfully - to give a pep talk to his cynical engineers: "I want you to think like entrepreneurs," the boss coaches. "Should we take huge risks?" the engineers ask. "No, the stockholders would hate that," the boss responds. "Should we act as though we have no boss?" one engineer suggests. "No," the boss warns, "that would be chaos." "Will we become billionaires if we succeed?" the engineers want to know. The boss shakes his head. "Raises are capped at 3% this year." Trying to regroup, the boss says, "I'm just saying you should be more creative." "And then we should act?" the engineers counter. "No," the boss warns. "That's when the problems happen." [Dilbert, August 30, 2015.]

We often operate that way: thinking big, but acting small - if we act at all. Following the conventional wisdom, we avoid the "deep water": we recoil at the thought that we might be capable of doing something great or even something different. But only by risking our nets in the unknown "deep wa-ter" can we transform our lives and our world in the Gospel values of com-passion, justice and reconciliation. The "deep water" is the risking of our own security and comfort and the putting aside of our discouragement and exhaustion, continuing to "fish" despite the ridicule and doubts of those dis-couraged souls who have returned to shore. Confident of God's grace and wisdom, we can transform our own Gennesarets by setting our small boats and fishing nets - despite the long night already - to the work of bringing in the "catch" of God's forgiveness and peace.

A STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITY This last weekend took us by surprise. Although we were expecting snow, it’s doubtful anyone expected as much as we got. We are putting together a list of names and phone numbers of some who would be able to help out when we get these big snow storms in the future. We have someone to plow the parking

lot of the Church and the driveway of the Residence. That still leaves a lot of area for one person to cover, the sidewalks, front plaza and clearing the doorways of the Church as well as a path into the Neumann Residence. It would help to have a list of people we can call on during or just in advance of bad weather to help to clear these areas for Masses and other functions. Please contact the office if you can help with this. 908-832-2513.

MILITARY PERSONNEL If you have someone in the military that you would like us to remember in our prayers, call the office or drop the name into the collection basket. As military personnel leave the Service, please notify us so that we can remove them from the list. Please remember the following in your prayers: Captain Baumann, Katherine, U.S. Army
