MEDICAL EXPOSURES

This course is designed to introduce students to medical themes, issues, topics, and careers. Each grade level (9-12) meets once a week to hear weekly lectures from guest speakers from the medical community. When applicable, students take field trips to medical and scientific institutions to get a firsthand look at how these facilities operate. Students are also provided opportunities to intern in after school and summer programs.

BE THE TEACHER Ex: Epilepsy   Today we looked over a slide show with Dr. Fine learning about

epilepsy. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that may cause a person to have repeated seizures. There are many different types of seizures that could be treated. The person could have staring spells or loss of conscious. Seizures may be caused by drugs, high fevers, abnormal levels of glucose, stroke, tumors, or brain damages. To determine if you have epilepsy you can take a neurologic exam, EEG or a CT. Doctors will treat you by the type of seizures you had. Three types of medicine the doctors would give is Phenobarbital, dialantin, and tegretol. These medicines may decrease the amount of seizures you have and can increase your health greatly. A new system the doctors developed is the ketogenic diet. This helps to balance the food you eat and for your body. If all the systems and methods fail you may need to get surgery to remove abnormal brain cells. This can be a large problem if not treated.
