tle Coliseum. Yet, I am far more invested in the

ordination of our clergy now than I was in my

own ordination in1992. To my surprise, my role

on the Board of Ordained Ministry has connect-

ed me to the anxieties, fears, frustrations and

finally joys of our Ordinands as I have had the

privilege of being a part of their journey.

I was surprised by melancholy as my home

church was included on the list of closed

churches. Christ changed my life through the

faithful witness of many in that congregation.

The story rightly ends with resurrection. Two

Decatur congregations will become one, relo-

cate, and use the proceeds from selling property

to begin a new work singing God’s song.

Those are not the only highlights from Annual Con-

ference, just a few reverberating in my heart and

mind this morning. Appropriately, I close here with

my favorite verse from the Charles Wesley hymn

often used to send us forth from Annual Confer-

ence.

To serve the present age, my calling to fulfill; O may it all my powers engage to do my Master’s will. – Charles Wesley (UM Hymnal, 413)

Grace and Peace, Lyle

From the earliest days, Methodists have sung their

faith. Charles Wesley’s “And Are We Yet Alive” be-

came the standard opening song of Annual Confer-

ence around 1780. In 2017, the North Alabama Con-

ference gathered in Huntsville around a theme re-

flecting our roots, “Singing God’s Song in Tune and

Rhythm.” God’s lyrics are the message of for-

giveness, love, and new life in Jesus Christ. How we

follow Jesus in the church and into the world is the

tune and rhythm of God’s song. From Sunday’s

opening worship to Tuesday afternoon’s sending

forth, we were reminded of the beauty when the

people of God sing God’s song in tune and rhythm.

Annual Conference has a familiar and welcomed

rhythm for me. Both the official, scheduled struc-

ture, and the informal, personal rituals serve to re-

connect me to my covenant community, the United

Methodist Church. What follows is less of a report

for Annual Conference and more a reflection on a

few personal highlights.

Annual Conference is my favorite “reunion.” My

appreciation for this covenant community has

deepened over the years. At ordination, we be-

come members of the Annual Conference rather

than a local church. There is a life-giving fellow-

ship in our itinerant tribe rekindled in the formal

and informal rhythms of Annual Conference.

Vacation Bible School

It’s not too late to register for Vacation Bible

School! VBS is for children ages 3 years old through

6th grade. Children must be potty-trained to partici-

pate in VBS.

Nursery VBS (for Two-Year-Olds)

We will be offering our Nursery VBS again this year

for our littlest friends. There are a limited number of

spots available in this class. The Nursery VBS will be

offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights

(6:00-7:30 each night). This class for two-year-olds

will give our little ones a chance to experience VBS

and learn about God in a way that is fun and exciting

for them.

Family Robots

If you have not brought your family robot to the

church, please bring it on Sunday.

VBS Work Day

This Saturday, June 10, we will have a VBS Work

Day beginning at 10:00 am. Please make plans to

join us!

Decorating Day

This Sunday, June 11, immediately after church, we

will begin to decorate for VBS. If you are available,

please come and help. If you signed up to help deco-

rate “when needed”, please come to the church

around 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Parents, please keep in mind that while decorating

there will be potentially dangerous situations

for children (hot glue guns, tools, etc.)

around. Please find alternate care for your 4

young child during decorating time.

VBS Mission Project

This year we are going to continue our tradition of

collecting items for Operation Christmas Shoebox

for our mission project. Our Children’s Ministries

participate with this program each year. We prepare

gift boxes that are sent overseas to children in third

world countries who do not receive anything for

Christmas. Remember, it has to fit into a shoebox!

Please send your child’s shoebox items with them to

Opening Session.

VBS Offering

Our offering this year will be going to our mission

focus: Water for Peru. We will be learning about this

project throughout the week at VBS. Please send

change (any amount) with your child to Opening

Session to place in the offering for the project.

VBS Music CD

We will have CDs available for purchase which in-

clude all of the music from VBS. The cost of the CD

is $5.00. You may pre-order it on your child’s regis-

tration form, or you may order a CD at registration.

Please make your checks payable to JFUMC with

VBS CD on the memo line.

Creation Friday

Be sure to join the fun on Friday night of VBS as we

show our creative sides! Everyone is encouraged to

dress in their best creative attire (wild and wacky,

robot, or create something crazy!) Have fun with it!

Please try to keep accessories to a minimum.
