Fun with a Purpose

It is not easy to sit here and compose this article as the temperature is above freezing, the sun isshining and you can hear the snow melting, what a beautiful day in our part of the world. It has been a very busy time since the elections, getting use to my own position and working with

my fellow Divan members as they adjust to their new duties, all has worked well and we are allgetting along and things are progressing.

The first few weeks of my tenure was a very busy time. I installed 10 Clubs, each with a great mealat their Banquet. Lady Helen managed to stay slim and trim and me, I’m still trying to shed a fewpounds.

As a point of interest, Port Colborne, Welland & District Shrine Club have contributed $100,000 toour Canadian Hospital in Montreal over the past year.

Nobles and Ladies, Lady Helen and I would like to sincerely THANK YOU for all your hospitality, support and friendship as we travel around Rameses territory, God bless!

Rameses’ new home has gone out for tenders.

PAST IMPERIAL POTENTATERecorder

RECORDER’SMESSAGE

To reach out and change a child’s life, we have learned inmarketing it takes more than one approach to getsomeone to react. It takes Shrine Circuses, articles in the

news, hearing a patient presentation, listening to a Shriner andseeing the red Fez of a Shriner at sporting events. You can’t dojust one thing and say it doesn’t work.

It could be the silent sellers that keep talking after you’veleft. Shriner’s brochures, posters and booklets are excellent toolsbecause they can be shared with others. They also contributecredibility to givers who want to reach out and change a childand as Most Worshipful Brother Donald A. Campbell says “We,with that one-on-one contact, can be a better advertisement forFreemasonry than all the brochures, open houses, mall displaybooths or other programs currently in use.”

“No one has ever become poor by giving” From the diary of Anne Frank.

Once a person is convinced and feels that “they are whatthey give” and it’s a Shrine child that they want to help to givea better life and future to, they may feel this responsibility if it’sa financial gift that is dealt with correctly.

In that case Potentates, Treasurers and Recorders aredirected to immediately notify and send full particulars to thelegal department at International Shrine Headquarters in Tampaof all bequeaths, gift or monies known to them which may beintended for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Shrine Clubs and Units follow this same procedure as a

conduit for bequeaths, gifts and monies to Shrine Hospitals forChildren for charitable intent. Such information is necessary sothat the legal department may take proper steps to protect thisinterest in our philanthropy.

Since court receipts referred to charity may be executed byonly authorized officers of Shriners Hospitals for Children toinsure legal related language.

In the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children,Potentates and Recorders of Temples are to see that theirTemple attorneys review accuracy relating to ways of makingcharitable gifts to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

It is important to be prompt. We don’t want ShrinersHospitals for Children to be the last beneficiary to respond to acontract.

You may ask, “Why do I need to send in original envelopesto our legal department?” Sometimes this is the only contactinformation provided, as well as the postmark on the envelopeshowing the date the clock started running. Also, the coverletter may provide information, which allows staff topersonalize a thank you letter, as the legal department needs toprovide a thorough and complete response. Envelopes maycontain information regarding Shriners Hospitals for Children’stax determination.

We are all on the same team, with the same goal to benefit, protect and enhance our great philanthropy which is ShrinersHospitals for Children and as we reach out and change a child’slife, we continue to keep the red Fez smiling.

“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed” From Maya Angelou

Deanna and I recently returned from the Recorder’s Seminarin sunny Florida, we now look forward to sharing a fun timewith you at the Spring Stated Meeting and the SpringCeremonial in Sudbury from June 13th-15th, 2014.

DAVE’SNOTE PAD

Nobles, as I write this article, I would ask each and everyone of you, when you talk with your friends, neighboursand business acquaintances, ask them “Why are you not

a Mason”? Most often the answer is “No one has ever asked me”. We must be a little more aggressive and ask these good men

to join our fraternity. Once they join the Masonic Lodge, we need to get them

involved doing some part in a degree to keep their interest. Ifwe let them sit on the sidelines and be ignored, they will soondisappear. Talk to your Masonic friends; ask them to become aShriner. Invite them to any of the social events, show them thefun side and make them feel they want to be part of the Shrineorganization.

A lot of members say they are too busy to chair or sit on acommittee for an event or fundraiser. The truth is, the busier youare the better job you do. There can be a lot of hard workplanning a successful event, but there can also be a lot of funand fellowship. The next event you plan you may be surprised athow many more members are willing to be involved.

The more events your Club or Unit is involved in, whether itbe a BBQ, fish fry, golf tournament, Circus and of course theparades, the stronger you will become as these events willattract the new and younger Masons. These are the people theShrine needs to grow our membership.

Don’t forget our senior members; we don’t want them to feelthat they have been forgotten. If you know a Shriner who hasnot been out to your meetings in a while, call him up, ask himwhy, maybe he just needs a reminder, ask him if he would like aride to the next Club meeting.

Membership is the most important part of the Shrine today. We must all work together to retain our existing members andattract new. It should be every Shriner’s goal to sponsor onenew member in the up-and-coming year.

JIM’SON THE RUN

As I sit here on this last day of February realizing that wehave had an old fashion winter, I begin to think about thewarmer weather that is ahead, and the fun we as Shriners

can have by visiting other Shrine Clubs and Units, enjoying theirhospitality at their BBQs, golf tournaments and picnics.

I would like to thank all the Nobles and their Ladies forattending the Potentate’s Ball at the Holiday Inn. I know that Ill.Sir Terry and Lady Helen enjoyed it very much. It was nice to seefriends that you have met before and also to make new ones.

Events coming up in the future are Potentate’s GolfTournament on May 15th and also on May 25th the SpecialLadies Luncheon at the Temple.

Nobles, do not forget about the Spring Ceremonial inSudbury. The Nobles in Sudbury have done a great job in

arranging this event so let’s go and support them and havesome fun; that’s what it’s all about.

Now is a good time to go out and get new Candidates forthe Spring Ceremonial in Sudbury. You know that we lose about200 members every year.

The Circus is coming to the Greater Toronto Area in June andit is a different venue this year. There are shows during theweek and also on the WEEKEND. We will need ALL the HELP wecan get! We all know that the Circus is a big fundraiser for theShriners and our children so please come out and help.

All of the above information you can find in the Papyrus oron the web site.

I was at the Daughters of the Nile Tea on February 23rd andEmmanuelle Rondeau spoke on the progress of the ShrinersHospital for Children - Canadian Unit in Montreal and it soundslike the roof is on and that they are on schedule for the ribboncutting in August 2015, opening in September 2015.

Nobles, do not forget to visit beashrinernow.com and visitShriners Village.

Nobles remember our Ill. Sirs Motto: “Fun with a Purpose”.

AL’SALMANAC

As I write this column, Lady Jackie and I have just returnedfrom the Assistant Rabban Seminar held in Tampa,Florida. As you may be aware there are two separate

seminars, one for the Ladies and one for the Nobles. The contentof both seminars are similar material(s) with the main item onthe agenda being “Membership”.

We are not, unfortunately, the only Temple to be losingmembers. In fact, most Temples are losing members at analarming rate. A number of the seminars covered membership, retention and recruitment. In spite of rather dismal figuresthroughout the organization there are a few Temples that areincreasing membership.

There does seem to be a common thread which identifiesthese Temples. These characteristics seems to be:

1) a strong relationship between the Shrine Temple Clubs and the Masonic Lodges within their jurisdiction;

2) active participation in the Craft Lodges by the Shrine Masons;

3) as many of the Lodges do not offer many “family” activities these Temples are offering a wide range of family based activities designed to attract Masonic and non-Masonic families (this is not a new approach,as the Independent Order of Foresters, which is a fraternal insurance company, has for many years promoted the social activity benefits to attract customers for their insurance);

4) the Temple encourages all Clubs to run as many family events as they can and to invite all members of the Craft Lodges (and their non-Masonic friends) by lettersor email sent to their homes so the wife sees the invitation (each Club and Unit should work to develop a mailing list or email list to invite families to these events);

5) active participation by the Temple and Shrine Club members to ensure that all visitors have a good time;

6) have the Shrine Ladies spend time with the visiting Ladiesto discuss the benefits of their husbands joining the Temple, please don’t leave the new Lady sitting by herself or she will never return (Tampa has material for our Shrine Ladies to aid in recruitment).

This may seem somewhat simplistic but remember, we are afamily fraternity and we should offer to our members a balanceof activities that is “men” only events; menand ladies events; and full family eventsincluding children.

Don’t forget that the people we arelooking to attract both in the Masonicfraternity and non-Masons alike havelimited time. In most cases both familymembers are both working and it would befair to say the working wives do notappreciate their husbands going off bythemselves, they want to spend their limitedsocial time together. Let us give them theopportunity to have a pleasant evening out ingood company along with their families andsee the benefits of joining our greatfraternity.

So please, when planning your activity calendar, keep thismix in mind and get the word out to your friends and familyand show them what it is to be a Shriner.

Lady Jackie and I look forward to visiting with you over thesummer at the various activities throughout the jurisdiction.

Have a safe and happy summer.

In spite of dismalfiguresthroughoutthe Shrine,a fewTemples areincreasingtheirmembership

CHAPLAIN’SCORNER

As we leave behind what has been a long, rough winter, Iam hoping for a great spring and summer. Hopefullyeveryone had a Happy Easter.

We will soon be into our new Temple and looking forward toour Spring Ceremonial in Sudbury.

For now winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowersappear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the

voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. If I can be of any help, I am just a phone call away.

The year 2014 is off to a good start financially, however ifyou have not paid your dues, please do so ASAP. If at anytime you have any question with the financial statements

of Rameses Shriners, please do not hesitate to contact me. I know your Divan is working hard to stay within budgeted

amounts and in addition is very receptive to any newfundraising ideas you may have. Any ideas please let us know.

A question I am asked from time to time by non-Masons is“what benefit do you get out of being a Shriner”. My responseis varied, but one of the biggest benefits is the many, manyfriendships I have made not only in Rameses but the Shrine allover North America. You have many friends you have yet tomeet. In this regard please get out and visit one of our Clubssometime soon.

Just remember our Ill Sir Terry Fulton’s motto “Fun with aPurpose”.

Oriental Guide

WOODY’SWISDOM

Hello Nobles, apparently it’s spring, but you won’t know itup my way! Anyway, I’m sure it will come. Nobles, I haveattended the Oriental Guide School in Tampa and I don’t

know if I’m smarter or just a better “smart ass”, that’s for youto decide.

Nobles, on a serious note, we all must work harder atbringing in New Members. In 2011 Rameses brought in 118new members, in 2012 we brought in 75 members and in 2013we brought in 48 members. As you can see this is not thedirection that we want to take. It’s time to get busy withmembership, I mean everyone!

I believe in Rameses and am very proud of our efforts to takecare of our Hospitals. There was a great tradition in Ramesesand we all need to bring it back. I know that words alone

cannot make it happen. We have to roll-up our sleeves together. Membership is not just your Divan’s problem; we all must

share in solving the problem. Think for a moment, we haveapproximately 3,300 Nobles and if we split into groups of 25,could we come up with at least one good Candidate? If we didwe would create 132 new Nobles for 2014. Now don’t misreadme, I not talking about just anyone, I’m talking about goodCandidates. Someone that you would be proud to call “Noble”.

Please give membership some serious thought and takesome action. If you have never sponsored a Candidate perhapsit is time. Together we can make great things happen, we provethis everyday in our Hospitals.

Nobles, the Spring Ceremonial is in Sudbury, let’s make thatthis is a very special time.

Don’t forget the Potentates Ball on April 12, Ill. Sir Terry hasworked very hard for membership over the past years, let’sshow our appreciation!

Remember the quote of the month, “Hands that help areholier than the lips that pray”.

By Noble Tom BrooksMUSKOKA SHRINE CLUB

The Executive Installations for 2014,commanded by Ill. Potentate Terry Fultonmoved the gears to forward, very positive

with relatively young Nobles on board, an air of eagerness permeated the room anda booming spirit for fun and fellowship was evident. Yes, a good blastoff and hardto ask for better than that.

The first Shrine event loomed large as a bit troublesome, the February DorsetSnowball Winter Carnival, in which our Unit of Hillbillies was catering. Dorset is asmall village set in the heart of the Lake of Bays territory, a long drive from the coreof Muskoka, only a one day event but for 8 hours of very steady activity and a lot ofour members are of the snowbird type that migrate to the southern climes to easetheir aching joints.

Past year’s catering had shown this event as a good one day fundraiser, wealways liked the warm and friendly atmosphere, we knew that a good number ofpeople from far and wide congregated there and besides, we would have a chanceto visit that well known ‘Robinson Country Store’. Another year of participationseemed cloudy especially with the issue of enough help but those never really giveup. The founding Hillbilly had established a very good infrastructure but just couldnot be available for this year.

The thinking seemed to be, “Do we or don’t we” or “Can we”? Shriners beingShriners gave encouragement to come up with answers. The good news was thatour Ambassador Noble Carl Hawthorne and his fine Lady Vera agreed to organizeand plan the event. We were in motion. The problem of rising food costs, the heavyload of helping, the pressure of short order cooking on demand, the smooth flow ofpreparation and the suitable delivery of the foods were some of the hot topics. What a job they did! A Friday night session of planning and readying wasestablished, the 8 hour day was divided into 2 shifts of 4 hours and they enlistedthe help of the Club’s phoning committee to muster as much as would be possiblealong with any Shriner’s Lady that would volunteer.

Twelve Nobles and eight Ladiespresented along with five Hillbilliesfrom Stouffville. It was, as statedbefore, a steady flow of hungrypatrons, all the helpers were stillstanding at the end and the patronfeedback was exceptionally positive.

Net event fund $1,600, not muchfood left over and the workers oftencommented on the good fun andfellowship that they had enjoyed.

Many congratulations and thanks toyou, Noble Carl and Lady Vera for thewonderful job and success. Yes, Shrinerscan do it and our Ambassador said thatit will again be an event for 2015.

By Noble Jim Thornton MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Membership retention andmembership recruitment are stillour two most significant

challenges. The Nobles of themembership committee are your resourcefor materials, ideas, talks and support.Call any of us when needed.Geographically the Rameses is wellcovered. Most importantly remember, allNobles in Rameses are responsible formembership.

Right now, many of you are sayingwhat can I do? There are many ways tohelp improve the 7% loss of last year.

Number one is to get more Masons tojoin our fraternity. Talk about the Shrineto your Lodge brethren not in a formalsetting but rather conversationally. Tellthem about why you joined and the funyou have. Talk to the brethren more thanonce, invite them out to a function andhave an application with you. Maybe weneed to help to make Masons. This is theconcept behind “beashrinernow.com”.

The second way you can help is to letyour Club Secretary, the Recorder, or amember of the Membership Committeeknow when a member is in physical orfinancial hardship and cannot pay theirdues. The office has a number of differentoptions that can be offered, but we needto know.

On behalf of the MembershipCommittee, thank you to all the Clubsand Units who have invited us into theirmeeting. We appreciate the courtesiesshown to us, even when we just appear. We also appreciate the conversationabout membership and hearing yourideas.

The committee along with the Divanare working on contacting the Nobleswho have forgotten to pay their dues andeasier ways to pay. If you need resourcescall us! With your help we can become aGold Temple (membership gain).

Remember “Fun with a Purpose”, thefirst word being fun. If you are not havingfun, figure out why and change what youdo by getting more involved.

Finally let us know what you think.Contact a committee member by email orphone call.

Nobles of the Realm dressed in some of the cutest outfits. The festivities started Friday at the Comfort Inn Hotel. The

hospitality room had a full supply of spirits but the Nobleswanted something more than munchies!

Scotty Hamilton and his Scottish Clan came to the rescue. The sound of the piper and the pounding of a drum could beheard coming down the hall. They entered the room followed bysome want-to-be Scotsmen carrying the Haggis on a stretcher.Scotty said a few words about the Haggis that none of usunderstood. Steve Muir tried to give an English explanation buthe also had a speech problem. The Haggis was beaten, stabbed, cut and sliced. Those of us that were really hungry ate it whilethe rest of us stayed close to the Bar.

After we put away what ever we could put away we madeour way to the Curling Club. (Transportation was supplied, bythe way).

The usual and unusual opening ceremony took place at theBarrie Curling Clubwith Mr. Whitefishpulling the carvedWhitefish (which issymbolic of all fishstories) around theice. In hot pursuitwas The ShebaColour Party, dressedin their finest attire,

the Piper… making the noise of a true Scotsman and theDrummer, keeping the one beat rhythm. A procession of sobercurlers brought up the rear.

It was quite a sight to see with everyone slipping and slidingbut always refraining from any foul language, after all, this isThe White Fish not The Turkey Shoot. The procession finallystopped and the people of importance gave their speeches; thatbeing the Mayor of Barrie, our Potentate, our Sheba Presidentand the Mayor’s five year old Daughter who got the mostapplause. The cameras flashed, the news cameras were rollingand everyone smiled. Then the rock throwing, broom-sweepingevent was Declared Open. The audience clapped to signify theirapproval while trying to warm their hands at the same time.

Nobles from all over the Rameses Realm came to displaytheir ability to slide on one knee while holding a broom andthrowing a stone. Age and experience does not help but it

Sheba Shrine Club Happenings seems the crazier the outfit and the more liquid spirit you have, the closer you THINK you came to the bull’s eye.

The next morning saw everyone enjoying the OfficialWhitefish Breakfast put on by Noble Joe Malak and his Crew.Starting with an eye opener and ending with a lot of grease. Itwas a great spread! It helped to get all those cobwebs out ofyour body and keep your mind clear for a day of curling. Andcurl they did!

The two-day event capped off with the Banquet and Awards. Most of the awards were for gallant efforts that should beremembered, and timeless memories that should be forgotten.

It seems every year one group of these Would Be Curlersstands head and shoulders above the rest; there are some reallytall Nobles out there. This year was no exception. The 49th yearwinners of the Whitefish Trophy were The Patrol with PatMonkman, Damon Smith, Glen Polinger and Ian Davidson.

The 49th year winners of The Minnow Trophy were TheWoodstock Shrine Club with Bob Elliott, Jim Elliott, AndrewElliott and Dave Robertson.

Congratulations to Steve Whitley of Avening, Ontario, whowas the Ring Draw Winner. Remember Steve that $1,000 ringshould go to your Wife and not your Girlfriend. (Only kidding)

Our Master ofCeremony Noble PaulFockler paid tributeto every Noble inattendance. In trueShriner fashion eachone of us wasroasted, enlightenedand bathed inhumour. Some of uswere bathed more than others (Roy Milligan was inattendance).

Every team received prizes thanks to Noble Cal Madill andhis list of donors. The event was a great success and everyone islooking forward to next year, which will be a Sheba Milestone.

The 50th Anniversary of the Terry Harris Whitefish Bonspielwill be one to attend. All of the Nobles of Sheba are preparingnow to make this a monumental occasion. We ask all theNobles who have participated before to get their teamstogether. We also want to call on all virgin curlers who havenever attended to come join this bicentennial bonspiel.

50 YEARS is a long time… be part of a weekend of fun andfellowship. Space will be limited so call Noble Stuart Crockattand get registered early.

Remember what happens at the Whitefish stays at theWhitefish. ...I have only touched on the Highlights.

Toronna folks tapped to HillbillyBluegrass at St Pat’s parade

Howdy Cuzzins and neighbours. Thanks for being here withus here with our Hillbilly News. We are sitting on theporch of J. Johnson’s General Store with the single gas

pump, down here in the Appalachian Mountains at our villageof Burning Sands.

We want you to mark your calendar for Saturday August 23,cause everybody is welcome, non-Masons and our wives,Shriners, Hillbilly’s and our Divan who never miss it. It is ourAnnual Hillbilly Chow Down at Beth and Jim Johnston JR’sspread and their wonder dog Yankee and is located west ofStouffville, north of Markham. We will be putting on our Grandand Glorious Order of the Hillbilly Degree to Shriners and theirladies. What an honour. What fun it will be. Coz everybody willleave full of our chow.

Cuzzin Annie-Mae is serving fast food now at the Road KillCafé. That’s where you run over an animal or bird driving atleast 65 MPH.

We hope everybody is getting ready for our SpringCeremonial in Sudbury from Friday June 13 to June 15 with theparade on Saturday June 14. We need Candidates for initiationso ask the members in your Lodge if they want to have funwhile belonging to the largest philanthropic organization in theworld as we support 22 children’s hospitals in North America.

The Circus is coming to town. They will need a lot of helpfrom Shriners because the Spring Ceremonial is on at the sametime as the weekend that the Circus opens. Please come out asoften as you can to the Circus and not just when designated. Some are designated to come and none show up. What ashame.

The dates are June 13 - June 22 Woodbine Shopping Centre,Rexdale, June 26 - July 6 Brampton Powerade Centre, July 17 -July 20 Oakville Sheridan College, Trafalgar Campus, July 24 -July 27 Markham Fair Grounds and July 31 - August 4, MiltonFair Grounds. Noble Rik Kubiak, our Circus Director would reallyappreciate you being there.

Cuzzin Zeke went into a bar and asked the bartender for abottle of Less. The bartender said he never heard of it. Cuzzin

Zeke said, “All I know is my doctor told me to drink less.” You’re a Hillbilly if it is common for people to say in your

house, “Go jiggle the handle.” I hear that there is a delay in the opening of our new Temple

due to revisions and getting Planning Board approval theopening should be at the end of June now.

Our Divan is a bunch of busy guys. I hear that they aresometimes out eight nights a week.

Cuzzin Betty-Lou was walking down the road with a big jugof moonshine. Cuzzin Billy-Bob asked. “What have you got themoonshine for, ”She said,” I got it for my husband. ”CuzzinBilly-Bob said, “Good trade.”

The Hillbillies had a great St. Patrick’s Parade down Yonge Stin Toronna with lots of people laughing, smiling, tapping, andgiving us the thumbs up as we pass with our Bluegrass music.

If you are not in a Unit or Club then you are a Shriner inname only. Meet fellow Shriners and have a lot of fun. You willnot have more fun than in the Hillbillies. Consider joining us aswe meet the last Monday of the month at 7:30 at the Temple.Don’t forget to bring your Fez. If you are out of town, we haveHillbilly Outhouses in Hamilton, Sudbury, Muskoka, North Bay.

I notice our Shrine emblem or logo is being butchered bysome regalia manufacturers. They have the scimitar going underand over the claws. There is no such thing as artistic licensewith our emblem. You will see it several times in our Papyrusmagazine.

The crescent was adopted as the Jewel of the Order. Thoughany materials can be used in forming the crescent, the mostvaluable are the Claws of a Royal Bengal Tiger, united in theirbase in a gold setting. In the centre is the head of a Sphinx andon the back are a Pyramid, an Urn and a Star. The Jewel bearsthe motto “ROBUR ET FUCOR” which means “Strength andFury. “ Today the Shrine emblem includes a Scimitar, an ancientcurved sword, from which the crescent hangs with a five-pointed star beneath the head of the Sphinx. Make sure you buyand use the correct Shrine emblem.

You’re a Hillbilly if you paint wearing two heavy coats ‘causeit said on the can, “It is better to paint with two coats.”

They asked Cuzzin Wilbur if he knew the difference betweenignorance and apathy. He said, “I do not know and I do notcare.” They said, “Correct.”

Well Cuzzin Billy-Jack is here to pick me up in his 1938Chevrolet truck as my 1939 Dodge is in need of repair.

On behalf of the entire Hillbilly’s, we want to say, “Howdy”to all our Shriners and friends and hope you are enjoying thebest of health. May the G.A.O.T.U. bless you and keep you well.

If any readers have a favorite Hillbilly joke, pass it on and Iwill mention your name. Cuzzin Noble Tom Norris did. I am [email protected].

NN ot that I wish anyone ill will; but a bunch of highlytrained, motivated and eager Nobles are itching to tryout their skills with our new AED’s (Automated External

Defibrillators) after a CPR and AED course was completed at theClub March 1st. Don’t even think about catching 40 winks at adinner meeting or they will be all over you with a pair ofscissors cutting up your shirt, crushing your chest, messing upyour makeup with mouth to mouth, givingyou a body shave, then electrocuting you.Seriously though, two new units are now inthe Club; one in the jewellery room and theother on the Maid for when she sails thehigh seas. The Club was able to purchasethese two AED’s courtesy of “Sleep Cheap”;a tourism driven promotion by our hotels inNiagara benefiting local charities. NobleGreg applied for a grant and we wereawarded enough cash to purchase the twoAED’s. Keep up your healthy regimes andcross your fingers so hopefully we neverhave to use them on our membership. For all parading RamesesNobles let your fellow Units know if you have an AED unitavailable for emergencies.

A few of us braved the cold weather to go shopping over theriver; an expression we from Niagara call going into the UnitedStates. This time for a meat raffle held at Ismailia Headquartersin Buffalo.

Arriving there almost an hour early we spotted lots of eagerticket holders waiting out in the cold for the doors to open. It’sa good thing we had our Rameses Ambassador to Ismailia onboard to sneak us in the back door.

We commandeered seats up front, close to a huge pile ofice-cold meat each of us holding a fist full of dollar bills in onehand and a cold one in the other. A full hall produced lots ofexcitement due to the hard work of Noble Bill on themicrophone, the army of $1 ticket sellers, some liquidrefreshment and the winners stampeding up to collect theirwinning steaks, roasts, turkeys, sausages and even bacon andeggs!

Our group came away with enough protein to feed ourVagabond group their next dinner. When I arrived at homewithout any booty I got the feeling my visits over the river maybe seriously curtailed in the future.

I finally got my “old man” lesson at the Whitefish when I

was given a stick for what I assumed was used to keep meupright. I think it was a prudent move by my teammate in hisbeer stein hat, and then he informed me it was used to pushthe rock. Seeing the contortions one must put on one’s body todeliver that stone, it would have been impossible for me torecover without it.

I felt like the Michelin Man bundled up against bitterly coldtemperatures and high winds but countered them withinternally warming beverages and the meeting of lots of newfriends.

The combination, of endless conversation, lack of sleep, morewarming beverages and lots of munchies made for interestingscoring results. Also for some creative ice dancing or footcontrol by our rink and the other jester hatted team fromNiagara.

I discovered a pleasant tradition however; when you lose, you get plied with more internally warming beverages by thewinners. This could be my new winter sport with a little morepractice on the internally warming beverages as long as I canfigure out how to cut back playing with that rock.

Wow! a story of ice and snow followed by spring fishing andCeremonial tales; we must be Canadian eh!

Speaking of fishing, that’s what we allshould be doing and it’s not a catch a releaseprogram. We need keeper Candidates to walkthe sands in Sudbury; to stem the over fishingof Black Camel visits and demits. We all knowa potential Shriner, bait your hook with the funwe have and the satisfaction received caringfor our kids. Reel in one or better two as theyschool in pairs and usually stick together inorder for them to experience the Fun with aPurpose of the Shrine. The Spring Ceremonial isshaping up to be a “Northern Experience” notto be missed. Our winning golf foursome from

Kingston who tied and lost out in the title draw is issuing achallenge to all the divot diggers out there.

They will be defending “their” win on the 5.5 stars ratedTimberwolf Golf Course and challenge any and all comers.

Looking for another good reason to attend the high jinx inthe “Mini Apple”? If you’re a ball fan, the Twins are hosting theYankees in a four games series ending on our Imperial’sopening day in Minneapolis. For your lovely Lady, the largestmall in the USA awaits the click-click of her credit card and forthe lovers of a foamy one; there are 26 craft brewers in town. What more could a Shriner wish for other than our usualcamaraderie, some pin trading, a great parade down HennepinAvenue welcoming our new Imperial Potentate and above allhaving Fun with a Purpose.

Don’t think about napping!

The Oshawa Shrine Club has been around for 70 years, making the Club one of the oldest in the Rameses area andwe are still going strong.

I guess we have some bragging rights. We have a wonderfuland functional building in Oshawa that is usually filled withClub Shriners and guests at our Regular Meetings on the thirdWednesday of every month. Five active Units to choose from,

including Mini Cars,Mini Bikes and Tractors,a Colour Guard Unit,an award winningOriental Band and ourClowns who have alsogarnered numerousawards.

We inviteprospective membersand fellow Shrinersfrom other Clubs tovisit with us at anytime. Our President,

Doug Somerville, has lined up some interesting speakers forRegular Meeting nights guaranteeing you a fun filled andinformative night.

We also have a calendar filled with fun events including anIrish Pub Night every March, the Mini Bike and Tractor UnitSteak Fry in April (normally May every year), a Mother’s DayBrunch at the Club that is very well attended, a comedy nightwith top Yuk Yuk performers in May and our ever popular GolfDay on June 6th at the Kedron Dells Golf Club in Oshawa. Folksare already marking down summer dates to attend at the Clubincluding a succulent Roast Beef Dinner in July and the MiniBike and Tractor Unit Corn Roast in August.

Besides our busy social calendar we also participate in manyShrine events out of town. Recently a group of Club membersvisited our Shriners Hospital for Children – Canadian Unit inMontreal and delivered a cart filled with toys for the little ones. There were only six children in the hospital at the time and theybrought tears of joy to us as we listened to their stories of howtheir parents discovered the hospital and the help they weregiven. We all have fun at our numerous parades, BBQs anddances but nothing beats hearing from others just what Shrinerseverywhere accomplish.

The Club is mourning the passing of Noble Norm Lawton, one of our most active members. Noble Norm had been amember of our Club for over 63 years and even in his eightiesstill had the energy to take part in parades and other Clubactivities. Noble Norm’s smiling face and always-positivedemeanour is greatly missed.

The Club is also mourning the passing of Noble GerryJohnston. Noble Gerry put up a brave fight against ALS (LouGehrig’s Disease) and, unfortunately, there is no cure.

By Noble Don Thompson CREDIT VALLEY SHRINE CLUB

The Credit Valley Shrine Club ended the year with theelection and installation of the 2014 Officers. Noble MarkStoiko was elected and installed as President at the Club’s

regular meeting in November along with all the other officers.See picture above left.

A number of our Special Ladies attended the AnnualChristmas Dinner on December 10th and all were surprised by avery special visit from Santa Claus. Funny how all the Ladies getpresents from the Jolly Old Man but the Nobles get nothing. Iguess the Nobles will have to try harder to be good this year.

The Annual Christmas Lunch was held again this year at theMcGibbon’s Hotel in downtown Georgetown. Twenty-twoNobles participated in a turkey and roast beef lunch with all thetrimmings. George and Nick Markou, owners of the McGibbon’sHotel donated $100 to the Shriners Hospitals for Children -Canada. See picture below left.

The Noble Riders and the Smash Unit participated in theActon, Georgetown, Milton, Mississauga, Erin and CampbellvilleSanta Claus Parades. The Noble Riders won the best in show atthe Acton Santa Claus Parade. The Toys have now been put

away for the winter waiting for the Streetsville Parade in June. Christmas cake sales are finished for another year and the

totals are still being finalized and will be reported later. Cakesand Cookies were sold at 11 locations and the Committeehopes to add a few new locations next year. The Nobles put inmore than 300 man-hours to accomplish this task and a bigTHANKS go out to the Nobles that gave of their time.

A couple of cases of Christmas Cakes were sent to ourTroops still in Afghanistan and a few cases of ShortbreadCookies were donated to the Georgetown Food Bank.

The Credit Valley Shrine Club Masonic Degree Teamconferred a Second Degree for Credit Lodge #219 onWednesday, February 12, at the Masonic Credit Temple,Georgetown under the direction of our Shrine Degree TeamDirector Noble Greg Ferguson. See picture at top right.

Congratulations go out to Noble Reverend Peter Barrow onreceiving his 50-years as a Mason pin.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to raisingawareness to help prevent spinal cord injuries.

The health care system has created a brochure promotingsafe driving among teens, as well as additional materialsraising awareness of spinal cord injury prevention. Thebrochure is available through the website,shrinershospitalsforchildren.org, and the other items can beobtained through the online ordering system. Being aware ofthe risk factors that typically cause a motor vehicle crashand reinforcing safe driving tips – especially among youngerdrivers – may also lessen the risk of motor vehicle crashesand spinal cord injury.

Tips for Safe Driving:• Give driving your full attention.• Follow the rules of the road and obey speed limits.• Always wear a seat belt.• If transporting younger passengers, remember to

restrain children under age 12 properly in the back seat, and to place children in age- and height-appropriate safety or booster seats.

• Never get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.• Be aware of the side effects of prescription medications

you are taking before driving.• Use your side and rearview mirrors every five to seven

seconds.• Never write, read or send text messages while driving.• Always have a safety zone: a space to your left or right

to drive into during an emergency.• Your safety zone can also be the cushion of space in

front of your vehicle when a tailgater follows too closely.

• Scan the space you are driving in by moving your eyes left and right to get a sense of your surroundings. Use your mirrors frequently.

• Keep your eyes up. Look as far ahead as you can see. Do not focus only on the vehicle in front of you.

• Scan your surroundings.• Avoid distractions unrelated to driving.

Distractions Include:• Texting or reading• Talking on the phone – including using a headset,

earpiece or speakerphone• Eating• Fatigue• Arguing• An animal that is loose in the car• Disruptive passengers• Alcohol or other drugs• Loud music
