TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 19‘Madurai Veeran’ was one of the major milestone movies in

the career of the Tamil Movie Music Charmer, G. Ramanathan. Many consider this musical as the next best ofRamanathanafter he had broken into the front rank of TamilMovie music composers with ‘Thookku Thookki’.

‘Madurai Veeran’was made in 1956 and directed by the notedTelugu-Tamil filmmaker D. Yoganand (original name‘Yogananadam’) who had his training under the Indian moviemaestro L. V. Prasad. (A good friend of this writer, the two metoften and discussed the making of his movies including thismovie under review.). He passed away in 2006 at the age of 84.

‘Madurai Veeran’ is a Tamil folk hero popular in southernTamil Nadu. His name was derived because of his associationwith the city of Madurai as a protector of the City. His worshipis also popular amongst the Tamilians in other lands likeMalaysia.

‘Madurai Veeran’, also known as Muthu Kumaran or Veeran, rose through his exploits of valour. Thirumalai Nayak, the rulerof Madurai, acknowledged his skills and appointed him hisGeneral in his fight against the Kallars(A tribe of robbers, alsoa community.)

Madurai in those days was troubled by armed robbery by theKallar tribe and the King ordered Veeran to quell themenace.Veeranmeets with the royal dancerVellaiyammal(The fair one) and she is attracted to him andrequests him to teach her ‘Natya Shastra’.

The King, who was also attracted to Vellaiyammal, did notappreciate this development and viewed this as an affair. Onone occasion, some of his other Generals who hated the close-ness of Veeran to the King, used the opportunity to inform theKingthat the delay in suppressing the robbers was deliberateas Veeran was himself in connivance with the robbers. Furi-ous, the king orders a traitor’s death to Veeran. He is taken tothe gallows and his limbs are chopped off. Hearing this, his wifeBommiand Vellaiyammal reach the gallows to see the severedlimbs and chastise the King for his injustice. As the legend goes,Veeran is brought back to life by the virtues of both thesewomen and is vindicated by the presence of Gods. Veteranthereafter retires to a cave beneath the presentMeenakshiamman temple (The cave exists even nowthoughthe path is closed for people.)

A temple for him was erected at the south gate ofMeenakshiamman temple later by Thirumalai Nayak. Theballads praising Madurai Veeran have formed a folk tale sungfor many generations through rural songs (known in Tamil as‘Graamiya Paadalgal’) and traditional street theater, knownas Therukootthu in southern Tamil Nadu.

‘Madurai Veeran’, directed by D. Yoganand, and starring M.G. Ramachandran, P. Bhanumathi and Padmini was a big-budget production for its day and was released on April 13, 1956and completed a100-days-run at all the theatres it was screenedat.

(Not many are aware that there was an earlier movie versionof the story in 1939 which T.P. Rajalakshmi wrote and actedwith V.A. Chellappa as Veeran. Somewhat surprisingly, thiswriter, then doing research on his own for a book at the NationalFilm Archive of India (NFAI), found that it has a print of the1939 version. NFAI officials thought that it was the print of thelater MGR version. This writer was not convinced and, payingthe fee for screening according to the rules, he saw the full filmand, as expected by him, it was the T.P. Rajalakshmi-V. A.Chellappa version! It came as a revelation to many includingthe NFAI staff!)

LETTERS TO THE EDITORAuto-rickshaws continue to fleece customers

Sir, Tamilnadu Government a year ago regulated the auto-rickshawfares in the city amidst protests from auto-rickshaw unions. They fixedthe fare and announced that auto-rickshaws will ply only according tometer rate and offenders will be punished strictly. Chennaites had a sighof relief that they will no more have to haggle with the drivers. But oldhabits die hard and a number of auto-rickshaw drivers still continue todemand flat rates which are way higher that the metered fare. Theoccasional raids, cancellation of license and seizure of the vehicles havenot been helpful.—Tajy Prasad, T. Nagar

Rampant malpractice in ration shopsSir, I am a ration card holder and buy commodities every month

from my designated shop. I have noticed that the cardholders will beable to get their quota of commodities only if they go to the shop duringthe first week and if they fail to make it, they get deprived of theirquota. The Civil Supplies Department dispatches the goods to eachshop in accordance with the number of cards attached to it and thequota each card holder is entitled to. This in effect means that a cardholder’s quota of ration should be available to him throughout thatmonth. Since it is not so, it only means that the fair price shops areindulging in unfair practices. I appeal to the officials to take strictaction against such malpractices by fair price shops and ensure thatno ration card holder is denied of his rights. This will also avoid theunnecessary overcrowding in ration shops during the first week ofeach month. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Residences converted to mass housing for employeesSir, The owners of large multi-level commercial establishments in

T. Nagar are now on the prowl to rent/buy accommodations inresidential colonies to house their staff. One such establishment hasrented an independent house in Baroda Street, T. Nagar in which alarge number of its staff are living. It has made a number ofstructural changes to the building. One does not know whether it hasobtained the necessary permission to do so. The staff create lots ofnuisance thereby disturbing the tranquility of the neighbourhood. They even threaten the residents with dire consequences in caseof any resistance or complaints. The existing sewer system is unableto handle the discharged effluent from the house, and more oftenthan not, it gets choked. The authorities must act before the situa-tion goes out of hand as it is a rapidly proliferating problem in theresidential areas in T. Nagar and Mambalam. – K.S. Arangan, 12,Baroda Street, West Mambalam
