1.2. Student Conduct in designated areas

In Class Students are expected to be prepared (homework and materials), engaged (positive cooperation) and focused. As the last resort, the teacher may decide to remove or to detain a student and the following procedures may apply :

Removal from class The student must go immediately to the Student Life office on the fifth floor, accompanied by a student and with silent work to do. Students are not allowed to stay by themselves during an exclusion. The teacher will email the parents and cc the advisor and the Student Life Department. After three such removals, the student and his or her advisor must schedule a conference with the parents (possibly including the teachers who have removed the student and the Grade Coordinator) to implement more serious sanctions, such as a suspension. It will also be brought to the attention of the Director of Secondary School.

Detention A student may be assigned to the study hall for quiet work or reflection. Sports (including league games), along with all other after school commitments are not valid excuses for missing detention, nor may parents excuse a child from detention except for medical emergencies. If a detention is not respected, it will be doubled.

Students must also account for their presence within the premises, and the primary building in particular.

In Study Hall (Heures Vie Scolaire on EDT)

3. ABSENCES, LATENESS and HEALTH

The parents/guardians pledge to update their own and their children’s personal info on the LFNY Portal and inform the Health Office. This information will be found in the part of the website only accessible with a password (handed out by the IT department to each family upon arrival to the school).

3.1. Communication of Class Schedules (EDT), Absences and Lateness Schedule of Classes (EDT)

Communicated to students and their families in September, the first day of school. May be modified by the administration to meet with teaching requirements or respond to special or unforeseen situations. Any modifications will be given in a timely fashion.

Absences in Class

Attendance to every class on the schedule is mandatory, unconditional and nonnegotiable, including PE classes and all optional courses for which the student has registered. CheckIn, Advisory weekly Period, Dialog hours, Heures de Rencontre, are part of the regular schedule and no other activities must be organized during these hours.

A student may only be excused from class for exceptional reasons: Illness: If the student is ill before arriving at the Lycée, the parents/guardians should

keep the student at home or visit a doctor. If the student falls ill when he/she is already at the Lycée, the school nurse administers first aid, notifies the parents, and according to the gravity of the illness, decides whether to send the student home or to a hospital. The Lycée administration is notified when a student is sent home by the nurse or picked up by an ambulance at school.

Exemption from Physical Education: Determined and suspended only with a medical note provided to the school nurse. Possible exemption by the nurse only for one day in case of sudden illness or injury. Injured/ill students must attend class in the case of an exemption of less than 15 days. In case of an outside PE class, the teacher must email the attendance and inform that injured students will remain in the CDI. Repeated unexcused absences could impact the student’s grades, as Physical Education is evaluated continually throughout the year.

Family reasons: medical visit, university visit, religious holiday, family events. Parents must remain within reasonable limits when asking for class exemption.

The student is entirely responsible for keeping up to date in all the missed classes.

Parents may excuse a student from classes or school activities (except exams or mock exams) up to 5 days during a trimester. After this, ALL absence due to illness must be justified with a note from a physician. Numerous unexcused absences will result in a meeting between the school (Advisor, Grade Coordinator) and the family. Days of absence taken before and after vacation periods are not authorized and will be noted in Pronote as unexcused. Anticipated homework assignments will not be provided. Students who are struggling academically will be asked to reconsider their participation in extracurricular activities.

Notifying Absences

Student absences: For any planned or unplanned absence, parents must email the Student Life Office at [email protected] in advance or at least before 8:00 am the same day. The Attendance Coordinator will contact families to notify them of any unreported absence and ask for justification. In case of an appointment during the school day, a student must stop by the attendance to notify his/her return and get a late pass.

Parent absences: Whenever parents are absent (for a business trip or any other reason) they must notify by email the Student Life Department, as well as the School Nurse, and provide the contact information of those in charge.

Rules and Regulations, Secondary 20162017 6.27.16 (subject to revision) p. 9

Page 10: LYCÉE F RAN ÇAI S DE NE W Y O RK · Thursday, September 1rst at atten dance@ l fny. or g (nam i ng the fi l e by the student gr ade, nam e and fi r st nam e) P r eambl e The current

Lateness Punctuality to every class on the schedule is mandatory, unconditional and nonnegotiable. Parents’ full cooperation in this matter is required.

After one unexcused lateness, students will have their badges confiscated, will receive a temporary badge for the day and a lunch detention the same day (4e to Terminale).

After numerous unexcused lateness in a trimester, parents will be notified and students will receive: 6 lateness: one cyclelong lunch detention (4eTerminale). A one hour detention (6e/5e) 9 lateness: two cyclelong lunch detention (4eTerminale). Two hours detention (6e/5e)

Contact with families

For academic concerns: parents should email the teacher directly or their child’s advisor. For any student concerns happening out of the classroom: parents should email the Student Life Office at [email protected] or call 212 396 9895 (for emergencies). For emotional or learning issues: parents should email the school psychologist [email protected] For health issues: parents should contact the nurse ([email protected] /212 439 3849)

3.2. Nurse’s Office and Medications Students who are sick should not be sent to school. A student who feels unwell may go to the nurse only after having asked permission from his/her teacher or during lunch. S/he must be accompanied by a classmate or an adult.

Nurse’s Office The nurse’s office is a place for first aid. In case a student falls ill or is injured at school, s/he must see the Nurse to get permission to go home. If so, parents will be notified and asked to come pick them up or authorize (in writing) their child to go home by themselves. In the event of an emergency, 911 will be called and after attempting to notify the parents, the student, accompanied by an adult, will be transported to the pediatric emergency room at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center (except if a contrary order is given by the EMTs) where the parents must meet their child as quickly as possible. In the event of a contagious disease diagnosed by a physician, and in accordance with local regulations, the LFNY reserves the right not to admit the student to class and to ask the family to take him/her into their care. A physician’s note stating that the child is no longer contagious is required to return to school. Students with lice will be sent home. Parents must start treatment immediately. Students will only be readmitted with the consent of the nurse or a medical certificate.

If a student is not able to move on his/her own to the nurse’s office, any adult present must notify the Nurse (or Security) so that she will rush to the student’s location. Infirmary visits are recorded and reported to the families and caretaker if there is a concerning amount and a plan will be devised if needed. All medical forms are available on the LFNY portal and must be duly completed and returned to the school nurse no later than the last Thursday in August, otherwise the student will not be admitted starting on the first day of school.

Medications Students are only authorized to be in possession of emergency medication (for allergy and asthma only) if the nurse received a signed medication carry and use form from their physician. No other type of medication is allowed to be carried by students. Prescription and OTC medication will be administered by the nurses in school or at school sponsored events only if the parents provide the following form: “Consent to Administer PRESCRIBED and OTC medications.” For each new prescribed medication, a new form must be filled out.

4. RESPECT FOR OTHERS AND FOR THE PREMISES

4.1. Allergies and Respect for the Lycée’s and others’ property

Allergies Nuts and nut products Any food products brought into the school whether for group celebrations or individual snacks or meals must not contain nuts or nut products of any kind as they can be harmful and even cause death in those students with allergies. Having food in any space other than the cafeteria is subject to the approval of any adult present. Other allergens Parents and students are asked to be sensitive to any additional allergies.

Respect for the Lycée’s Property

Students must take the greatest care of the rooms, furniture, computer network and material at their disposal, and vigilantly maintain the cleanliness of the common spaces.

At the end of each class, students will be asked by their teacher to put the room back in order (board erased, smartboard shut down, no papers,...)

The Lycée reserves the right to search students’ lockers, spaces, equipment and storage areas, as well as students’ bags, including book bags, purses, and gym bags, in order to ensure the safety of students and employees. Student or parent permission prior to a search is not required.

Respect for the Property of Others

Bringing to school large sums of money, expensive jewelry or carry valuable objects, musical instruments, or any other equipment of monetary value is not recommended. Parents are asked to mark the name of their child on clothing and personal objects. Personal items must be secured in the student’s personal locker or in the changing room safes, with a lock provided by students. If a student is found with objects that do not belong to him/her, he/she must, in addition to the punishment imposed, return the objects in good condition or reimburse them.

Gambling It is strictly forbidden to gamble inside the Lycée. Sanctions will be decided accordingly.

4.2. LFNY Protocol on Bullying and Cyberbullying This protocol is paired with a preventive action starting in Primary and continuing through Secondary.

4.2.1. Definition Bullying is an American term, which designates several concepts familiar to French schools, including: incivility, violence, lack of respect, exclusion, intimidation, harassment, etc. Intimidation or harassment based on sex is illegal under Title IX of the federal law.

Bullying is a deliberate and repeated act or word by an individual or group that is intended to hurt, to humiliate or to make another person suffer either physically or psychologically. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying committed by an individual or a group of individuals by means of electronic forms of communication.

Each situation of nonrespect is not necessarily bullying/cyberbullying, but can culminate to it.

Bullying and Cyberbullying are not tolerated.

Rules and Regulations, Secondary 20162017 6.27.16 (subject to revision) p. 11

Examples of bullying include the systematic repetition of the following: Verbal:

Teasing Mockery, insults, vulgar language Discriminatory remarks with ethnic, racial, sexist, or sexual overtones False rumors, insulting or intimidating emails or notes, demands for money, etc…

Physical / Material: Hitting, pushing, kicking, hair pulling, locking in, etc… Damaging the property of another, writing graffiti and all other forms of teasing Inappropriate sexual behavior

Emotional: Menacing looks or gestures, verbal threats Exclusion from a group, intimidation Forcing someone to do something against his or her will through pressure, manipulation, bribe

Examples of Cyberbullying include the systematic repetition of the following:

intimidation, insults, mockeries or online threats propagation of rumors hacking of accounts and the digital identity creation of a subject of discussion, a group or a page on a social network against a peer publication of a photo or a video of the victim without his/her consent.

There is often an imbalance of power between the bully/aggressor and the bullied/aggressed. The consequences of these acts can have devastating effects on the victim that can culminate in failure in school, behavioral problems, serious psychological disorders, or in extreme cases, suicide.

Any student who feels that he or she has been discriminated against or harassed in any way is encouraged to bring his or her complaint directly to the Student Life Department.

Passive witnesses of these acts of bullying are called “bystanders” or “passive witnesses”. They need to understand that their reactions have repercussions on the actions taken by the bully/aggressor either by encouraging them, ignoring them or stopping them.

Students who intervene to help a victim of bullying by informing an adult, are not denouncing someone, they are helping someone in distress.

4.2.2. Procedure in case of bullying

Disrespect of others, depending on the gravity of the circumstances, will result in a disciplinary meeting with the student(s) involved and his/her Advisor and Grade Coordinator.

The punishment reminds the student that the transgression of the rule is unacceptable (additional work, detention, suspension, or ultimately a permanent expulsion from the Lycée, after a meeting with the Head of School).

Please refer to the Bullying Protocol which will be presented to students at the beginning of the school year and will remain available on the LFNY portal.

10. ADDENDA

10.1. StudentEmployee Dynamics

10.1.1. Boundaries Students are expected to interact with Lycée employees, as well as other students, in a respectful, compassionate, and appropriate manner. This includes recognizing and adhering to the boundaries inherent to appropriate interpersonal relationships, including studentemployee relationships. The Lycée recognizes that close working and mentoring relationships develop between students and Lycée employees; however, it is important to respect the distinctions and adhere to the limitations that apply to schoolbased relationships.

Rules and Regulations, Secondary 20162017 6.27.16 (subject to revision) p. 17

Page 18: LYCÉE F RAN ÇAI S DE NE W Y O RK · Thursday, September 1rst at atten dance@ l fny. or g (nam i ng the fi l e by the student gr ade, nam e and fi r st nam e) P r eambl e The current

10.1.2. Report Concerning Behavior There may be occasions when an interaction with a Lycée student or employee may seem out of place or uncomfortable. A student who experiences or witnesses something out of the ordinary, or even if a student thinks they have experienced or witnessed a questionable interaction with a Lycée employee, student or a member of the Lycée community, he or she should feel comfortable seeking guidance or advice from their advisor or Grade Coordinator. Reaching out for assistance can help a student understand a situation or develop a strategy for dealing with something out of the ordinary. Speaking with someone at the Lycée may also prevent a problem or stop inappropriate behavior. Please understand that students who have questions or want to talk about something they have seen or experienced will not be subject to any sanction or discipline for coming forward to ask for guidance. In fact, as members of the Lycée community we all have a responsibility to look out not only for ourselves but each other as well – expressing concern to an adult is the right thing to do if we think something inappropriate is or might be occurring or has occurred in the past.

10.2. LFNY Policy Statement on Substance Abuse The Lycée Français de New York endeavors to create a positive learning environment and therefore wants to promote an educational community that does not tolerate the illegal use of alcohol and drugs. Student involvement with these illegal substances, as well as causing serious concerns for our students’ health and safety, creates an atmosphere that fosters dishonesty, deceit and disrespect for the laws of the United States and the state of New York. Alcohol and other drugs on our campus are incompatible with the educational mission of the Lycée. The Lycée will apply disciplinary action and sanctions when confronted with student conduct which violates the Lycée’s policies. All consumption, possession or exchange of drugs, alcohol or other illegal substances (including the improper use and abuse of prescription and overthecounter drugs) in the Lycée or on the outskirts of the Lycée is strictly forbidden. This includes school trips and events offcampus sponsored by the school or closely affiliated with the school. Any violation of this policy will expose a student to disciplinary sanctions, regardless of whether or not other treatment resources are in place.

Educational, Counseling, and NonDisciplinary Resources We recognize substance abuse to be a serious problem which often places students and families in a very difficult position. The following steps are intended to promote health and wellbeing, and to aid students and families. Elements of a counseling or treatment program may be put in place alongside disciplinary sanctions, but they are not themselves sanctions, nor will they appear on a student’s transcript. 1) The school will provide continuing educational opportunities for students, parents and faculty to

learn more about substance abuse. These include health hours, speakers, and professional development opportunities.

2) Any student or parent may, at any time, speak with the Dean, the School Psychologist, or the School Nurse about a student problem with drugs or alcohol.

3) Any student or family may, at any time, ask for the school’s guidance in identifying a substance abuse professional to address problems with drugs or alcohol.

4) Should the school receive information that a student has been in possession of, used or distributed alcohol or drugs, (including the use of prescription medications not specifically prescribed for the student, abuse of prescribed drugs, or improper use of overthecounter drugs), whether at school, in the neighborhood, or on a schoolsponsored trip or activity, the Lycée will begin a factfinding process which will include allowing the student and his or her parents a hearing before the administration. The school may require evaluation by a treatment

Page 19: LYCÉE F RAN ÇAI S DE NE W Y O RK · Thursday, September 1rst at atten dance@ l fny. or g (nam i ng the fi l e by the student gr ade, nam e and fi r st nam e) P r eambl e The current

professional. The school will offer families a choice of possible treatment professionals and services. Evaluation will be performed at a treatment center or by a licensed individual specializing in counseling students with drug problems. The Lycée prefers to work with professionals and institutions known to the school, but any licensed specialist in addiction or substance abuse acceptable to the family will be considered. The school will, furthermore, require that a release of information form be signed by the parents, enabling the treatment center to report findings and, if applicable, treatment progress to the Lycée psychologist and counseling team. Such counseling will be mandatory, but the counseling or treatment program is not a disciplinary sanction and will not appear as such in the student’s permanent record.

5) During the course of any counseling or treatment plan, substance abuse professionals will guide the school by making assessments and treatment recommendations. The Lycée Français de New York does not diagnose or treat problems of substance abuse. The school will be guided by the diagnosis, assessment and medical recommendations of treatment professionals.

6) Should the school determine that there is a reasonable basis to conclude that a student has an ongoing problem with drugs or alcohol, the school reserves the right to require an involuntary leave of absence for the student(s) concerned while treatment is underway or other resolution is pursued, in order to protect the school community.

Disciplinary Sanctions The school believes that a student’s drug and alcohol abuse are serious violations of our rules and the law and necessitate equally serious sanctions. These disciplinary sanctions are separate from, and in addition to, any counseling or treatment program which may be put in place.

1) As an aid to enforcement of our rules, the Lycée reserves the right to inspect the contents of student lockers, pockets, or school bags at any time. If a student will not empty his or her pockets when asked by a Lycée official so that the school may inspect the contents, the school may assume the student is concealing something which would be a violation of school policy.

2) The Lycée reserves the right not to permit on school property or at school events any student under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substance. In such a case, the family will be notified immediately, and the schooldesignated physician may be called in with parents’ consent to assess the situation and to propose a course of action, including screening tests.

3) For a first violation of the policy regarding substance abuse (as stated in boldface above), a student will be suspended from the Lycée. The duration of the suspension will be dependant on the severity of the offense. Parents will be notified, and other adults concerned will be informed at the discretion of the support team.

4) Repeat violations of the school’s alcohol and drug abuse policy can result in severe discipline, up to and including expulsion.

5) Should a family refuse to permit an assessment, refuse to engage counseling for a student when such is recommended by a professional, or fail to follow through once a counseling or treatment program has been initiated, the Lycée Français de New York retains the right to expel or refuse reenrollment to the student, for the safety of the larger school community.

Parent Responsibilities By enrolling a child in the Lycée Français de New York, parents agree:

to respect, support, and abide by the rules of the school and applicable laws, to review the rules of the school in general, and the policy regarding substance abuse in

particular, with their children, to abide by any recommendations of the school as regards counseling and treatment, including

the signing of Release of Information forms allowing a treatment center to release reports and confer with appropriate school officials,

In addition, given our urban environment and the developmental issues attendant on adolescents and preadolescents, the Lycée strongly encourages adults to responsibly chaperone any parties or other events in their own homes or locations arranged by the adult members of our community outside of school hours.

10.3. Student Honor Code Reminder of our school mission (as currently published)

“Every parent wants his or her child to receive the utmost from their educational experience and to graduate with both the knowledge and life tools they need to thrive in an increasingly complex world. The Lycée Français de New York has long recognized this desire and continues to maintain a curriculum that is rooted in providing a comprehensive academic and social foundation. Specifically, the Lycée combines the best of two pedagogical worlds: AngloSaxon and French. Through an excellent, rigorous and encyclopedic education, the school strives to achieve three objectives:

1. Educate students to be active and responsible citizens 2. Support every student’s emotional, personal and psychological growth 3. Provide all students with academic excellence

By pursuing these objectives within a broad curriculum that includes a rich program of artistic and cultural activities, the Lycée endeavors to foster the development of independent, creative minds and instill a strong work ethic. Additionally, the Lycée promotes selfrespect and respect of others by advancing an unwavering code of conduct grounded in a community spirit and acceptance of diversity. Students and parents who choose the Lycée Français de New York should bring a commitment to an enriched bilingual education and to the preservation of these broader objectives that comprise the school’s distinctive program.” Honor Code Every student at the Lycée Français de New York shares a commitment to the school's threepart mission: academic excellence; emotional, personal and psychological growth; and active and responsible citizenship. As a Lycée student I pledge:

1. To share and support the school's commitment to academic excellence: I promise that all tests, homework, and classroom work submitted by me will be entirely my own. I will neither give nor receive help without acknowledging it. I refuse to solicit others to do my assigned work or to employ shortcuts, cheating, or any measure whatsoever that compromises my strict personal engagement with the assignment.

2. To share and support the school's commitment to emotional, personal and psychological growth: I promise to study hard, to take advantage of dialogue hours and other support structures as needed, and to work with the school in planning my extracurricular activities and future scholarship.

3. To share and support the school's commitment to active and responsible citizenship, I promise to respect the person and property of every member of the Lycée community, to be unfailingly honest, to seek out opportunities for service to the school and to the public, and to accept and celebrate the differences that makes each of us unique.

As a sign of my partnership with the Lycée and the values we share, I affix my signature to the following pledge: I, _____________________________, a student at the Lycée Français de New York, in solidarity with the mission and values of the school, guarantee my honesty and integrity at all levels: academic honesty and integrity in my studies and all my coursework, personal honesty and integrity in my dealings with my fellow students and adults, and public honesty and integrity in my relations with the larger community.
