LVFAR ecoGranic APR Paving Block LVFAR ecoGranic Air Pollutatnt Removal Paving Block is made of two-layers containing recycled aggregates

and titanium dioxide which causes the degradation of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile

organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM). ecoGranic is made in Spain and the high

degradation efficiency of ecoGranic for several pollutants has been certified according to standards ISO

22197 and ANFOR XP B44-13, by different renowned European Centers. ecoGranic Air Pollutatnt Removal

Paving Block causes photocatalysis which can reduce approx. 45%-85% NOx in real condition.

The air purification experiments on a concrete photocatalytic

ecoGranic, were conducted from 19-28 January 2009, by the

Department of Construction Management and Engineering

(Department of Technology and Engineering), of the University

of Twente (Netherlands).

Laboratory Tests were conducted under the 22197 1:2007 ISO

standard test conditions with an active layer of 50mm wide and

100mm long.

The ecoGranic block has presented high photocatalytic activity

of removing NOx according to the established standard test

procedure ISO 22197-1:2007.

(The test was performed by Dr. Maria de los Milagros Ballari and supervised by

Dr. Professor Jos Brouwers)

The demonstration project was developed in the town of

Sestao (Vizcaya, Spain) at the street Ametzaga where

photocatalytic ecoGranic blocks were placed. The air quality

research was conducted from June 23 to July 1, 2009.

A street was paved with ecoGranic blocks 200x200 (eco street)

adjacent to a paved street with traditional blocks (control

street). The NOx concentration was measured in both streets,

under different meteorological conditions (temperature, solar

radiation, relative humidity, wind speed and ozone

concentration).

The average of NOx reduction in the eco street regarding the

control street got to reach 56%.

NOx concentration was measured at 25cm. from the ground (height of the

exhaust car). On June 23 the measure was taken at about 10cm height from the

ground with an increase in the reduction of NOx as well. On June 25, by

measuring the concentration at about 150cm height from the ground (where

the air we breathe comes from), the effectiveness in reducing the NOx remained

unchanged.

QUESTIONS?

Q: How does ecoGranic work?

A: ecoGranic is made of two layers including a base layer and an active surface layer which causes the acceleration of a chemical reaction called photocatalysis, and also the degradation of air pollutants.

Q: What is photocatalyst?

A: It is a natural chemical reaction which involves the absorption of light by a catalyst. When photocatalytic oxidation takes place, an oxidation reaction and the reduction of organic and inorganic pollutions, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), convert them into safe products for health and plants through the process of mineralization.

Q: Where does the product that we get

from photocatalysis go and what are they?

A: The result of decontamination are positive products, such as nitrates or carbonates, which are spread by rain and wind, and are beneficial for vegetation.

Q: How long does it last?

A: The decontaminating effect of ecoGran remains unchanged within the whole lifecycle since its active layer causes but is not an active part of the chemical reaction.

Q: Are all colors equally effective?

A: All ecoGranic block offer an effective activity decontamination, although those in light colors are more effective and reflective of light.

Q: Will ecoGranic’s technical or aesthetic characteristics decrease when compared with a standard pavement?

A: Not at all and in fact the result is in opposite. The properties and physical-mechanical characteristics, and its versatility are maintained in terms of finishes and colors of our traditional pavements and even improved over the years as ecoGranic has been able to degrade organic compounds of the dirt and therefore keep its aesthetic quality.

Q: Does ecoGranic have any negative

effects?

A: No. All tests in the laboratory and works show that ecoGranic pavement has high-performance and many advantages over a traditional one and without any adverse effects.

Q: What is the recycled content of

ecoGranic?

A: The recycled content of ecoGranic is about 70% recycled aggregate.
