Executive Summary
“Luzia” is Gustavo Bernal’s passion piece; a poetic and ethereal
take on life, regrets, romance, and true love. This nominated script was the first step taken to bring the beautiful Luzia into
reality.
By gathering a stellar crew that includes producer Sofia Gomez, cinematographer Matthew Rivera, and production designer
Samantha Van Deen, Gustavo formed a team of young creative artists that will treat “Luzia” with the devotion and drive it
deserves.
This beautiful concept began with a nominated script by Bernal. Principal Photography is to take place in late July 2011, and will be shot in the very stunning and fitting Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI.
The film is meant to reach as many audiences as possible,
beginning in the festival circuit and eventually released to the general public.

Synopsis
Gabriel, an old man, tells his nephew of the only thing he seems to remember: the time he was rescued near an isolated seashore,
after a car accident, by a beautiful and enigmatic girl that changed his life forever... Luzia. But, it is in this recollection -in
this love story- where he learns about the nature of this place, and the sacrifice he must endure in order to free himself from the
fears that led him there in the first place. Despite the passing of time, Gabriel is hopeful that he will see her again, in that place
they once called theirs...
Logline
An old man recollects a time when he was cast away in an island and met a pure young woman that taught him the toughest lesson
in his life.

Gustavo Bernal-Mancheno Growing up in various cultures and surrounded by films at an early age, Gustavo Bernal-Manchenobecame engaged with the wholesome qualities that unify the various crafts of a moving picture. He realized that telling a visual idea (from a 30 second commercial to a feature-length film) demands more than a “specialization”, but a holistic appreciation of the creative elements encapsulated within the art of filmmaking. Thus, writing, directing, and editing have become his greatest strengths, in which he feels the most comfortable and passionate about. Gustavo holds a B.A in Film Directing and Digital Editing from Columbia College Chicago, and is willing to make use of his talents in a professional and engaging environment, where he can collaborate with other fellow artists and challenge himself towards that never-ending degree of excellence.
Sofia Gomez Garcia Sofia Gomez was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. BLACK SCREEN:
SUPER: "AND SO I SLEEP, AND SO I DREAM, OF REACHING TO THEOTHER SIDE." - Luzia.
YOUNG MAN'S VOICEI don't know where to begin, uncleGab...
OLD MAN'S VOICEWhere am I?
YOUNG MAN'S VOICEYou don't remember the accident?
A sound of a crash... mixed with the cries of a roaring sea.
OLD MAN'S VOICENo.
YOUNG MAN'S VOICEWell, what do you remember?
The sea calls as if approaching...
FADE IN:
1 EXT. SEASHORE - DAY
Gradually, the dancing waves of an endless sea come to light.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)I remember her, and her alone.
YOUNG MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)You keep saying that... but who isshe?
The sea stretches to immensity, and with it, the seashorereveals its shape.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)I wouldn't know where to start.
A majestic sight: The sands of a virgin shore candidly embracethe enormous azure waters.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.) (CONT'D)It seems like it was ages ago...when she found me there.
The dying waves that reach land, gently push a body back toshore.
2.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.) (CONT'D)Yet, her image is as clear as thesun's rise and set.
Far out, a figure approaches. Its movement and grace quicklytells us it's a girl.
This is LUZIA, young, beautiful, wears only a pendant aroundher neck, and a simple summer dress that obeys the outlinesof her heavenly figure. Without her, no sea would be assoothing or pure as it is now...
She kneels next to the body, turns it over, revealing ahandsome man, mid 30's. This is GABRIEL. She clears thehair and sand from his pale face.
She pokes his cheek, intrigued.
LUZIA... Oh dear.
She presses his chest a few times... nothing. At that, shestops, and observes his face in detail... She smiles.
Softly, Luzia kisses him back to life...
Gabriel coughs water out, as his body jerks to motion onceagain.
His eyes open with the clear sight of her unembellishedbeauty.
He leans forward, rubbing his head and face.
GABRIELWait, where am I?!... What happened?
LUZIAYou must be the one that couldn'tpass through.
GABRIEL... What?
LUZIAOne side of the bridge collapsed. They said they saw a car fall withit... that explains you, I suppose.
GABRIELReally? Yeah, I think I remember.
Luzia looks at him, curiously... smiles as brightly as ever.
3.
LUZIASo what brings you here?
Gabriel struggles to get up, she grabs his arm.
GABRIELI was driving back home -where I'mfrom.
LUZIAWhy?
GABRIELWell... I'm a writer. And sometimeswriters need to be alone.
She smirks, as her eyes examine his face.
LUZIAHmm, you shouldn't be a writer ifyou aren't a very good liar.
She walks away, skipping in a dance, glancing back at him.
LUZIA (CONT'D)Come! I wanna show you something. I'm Luzia, by the way. With a "Z"!
He follows her, intrigued.
GABRIELI'm Gabriel.
LUZIAOf course you are.
2 EXT. SEASHORE, TREES - DAY
The first sign of trees and bushes. There, Luzia takesGabriel to a spot filled with long piles of timber.
LUZIAI'm making myself a raft. See?
GABRIELSure looks like it... and for what?
LUZIASo I can get to the other side, silly.
GABRIELRight... well, Luzia, good luck withthat. But now, I have to find a wayback. Ciao.
4.
He takes a few steps-
LUZIAThat's why I brought you here.
GABRIELWhat do you mean?
LUZIAYou'll want to go to the other side,if you wish to go back. That's whereyou came from. But now, without thebridge, this is your only choice.
Her smile is infectious... he even considers the idea.
GABRIELReally?... I'm sure I will find helpsomewhere around here. But thanksanyway. Nice meeting you, Luzia.
He walks into the bushes... losing himself in the distance.
3 EXT. SEASHORE - LATER
Luzia, eyes closed, sits on the sand in a meditative pose, breathing in the soothing voice of the alluring sea... Thegentle wind embraces her fine hair, caressing it with suchharmony.
In the background, Gabriel returns, somewhat exhausted. Luzia grows a smile, without moving, eyes still closed.
GABRIELYou were right. It's like there'snothing here. I don't even know howI found my way back... I must'vewalked for hours.
He approaches, curiously.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)What are you--
LUZIAShh-shh... sit.
Gabriel, perplexed, sits beside her. Both now facing thesea.
LUZIA (CONT'D)Do you like the sea, Gabriel?
GABRIEL... To be honest... No, I don't.
5.
LUZIANeither did I... But you must drownyour fears, so you won't keep onrunning.
Gabriel looks down, pensive, then looks at her. She remainsas before, eyes closed.
GABRIELHow?
LUZIAFind something you can truly love, and make it a part of it... that'show change happens.
He stares at her and then at the sea... Finally, her eyesopen, like shades that unveil their own serene sea. Onethat hypnotizes.
... They remain there, facing infinity. She slides closerto him, resting her head over his shoulder.
4 EXT. SUMMERHOUSE - DAY
Luzia walks out of the porch, spinning by the rhythm of herown music. Gabriel follows.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)So I stayed with her. She said thatI owed her that much for letting hersave my life -though I didn't thinkthat made much sense.
They make their way through an open field of grass...
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.) (CONT'D)I guess she was feeling rather lonely. And in a way, so was I... Perhaps, she wanted me to understand that...or perhaps she wanted someone tounderstand her.
5 EXT. SEASHORE, TREES - AFTERNOON
Some wood logs are evenly grouped. Gabriel sits on a corner, untangling rope, extending it across the ground.
Luzia, all wet, baring her usual bright smile, approacheshumming a tune.
Gabriel can't help but stare at her. Then looks away.
6.
LUZIAThe water is so good today!... Icouldn't help it.
She grabs some of the rope, starts untangling it.
LUZIA (CONT'D)This is great. With you here, we'llget this raft built in no time! Itwas taking forever with just me here.
Gabriel looks at her, thoughtful.
GABRIELLuzia, where is your family?
LUZIAOh, they're on the other side. That'swhy I want to go... I miss theirfaces -it's been too long.
Gabriel looks far out at the sea.
GABRIELYeah. Days seem endless here. Yet,you can barely feel them.
LUZIADo you miss your family, too?
GABRIELI don't know... I guess so -But I'mnot sure if I'll be able to make itacross that.
LUZIADon't you worry. You have me. Right?
He looks at her and can't help but smile. She replies backwith blushes that come out in forms of sweet chuckles.
6 EXT. SEASHORE - DAY
Both walk along the shore. She talks to him with a livelyexpression, both of passion and wonderment.
He stares at her, candidly.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)She captivated me instantly. I finallyfelt that my spirit once more carriedthat youthful promise...
7.
7 EXT. SUMMERHOUSE, PORCH - LATE AFTERNOON
Luzia takes Gabriel's hand and puts it around her waist. She tries to teach him to dance. A failure both enjoy.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)... the kind that can make a momentseem not ordinary, but everlasting...
8 EXT. SEASHORE - MORNING
By the shimmering sea, Luzia hops in and out of the water,as she splashes some at Gabriel. He chases her about, andboth fall together, in an embrace with the receding waves.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)... like dreams that fulfill in sleepwhat we leave behind when awake... Iguess, I simply felt complete.
9 EXT. SUMMERHOUSE, OPEN FIELD - DAY
Clouds glide across the blue summer sky. Gabriel observesthem, with such peace.
He and Luzia lay on the grass. Her head on his chest.
LUZIAGabriel?
GABRIELYeah?
LUZIAWhy were you really going back toyour old home?
His thoughts are now on the question... But no answer.
Luzia rolls over, now face to face with him.
LUZIA (CONT'D)Come on... You can tell me.
Her genuine smile persuades without need of words.
GABRIELWell, if you must know... I wasrunning away.
LUZIAFrom what?
8.
GABRIELFrom everything. I felt that I wasa stranger to my own life. I feltlike I was drowning in it...
LUZIAAnd how do you feel now?
GABRIELAt peace... with you.
She caresses the side of his face, tenderly.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)I don't know what I'm going to dowith myself when I leave this place...Luzia, come back with me.
They gaze at each other. She leans up straight, takes herpendant off her neck.
LUZIAI can't. But I want you to keep this.
Gabriel takes the pendant, examines it closely. The word"LUZ" is carved on it.
LUZIA (CONT'D)It will help you remember me. Nomatter where you are...
GABRIELI will never forget you.
She rests her head on his chest once more. Closes her eyes.
LUZIATrust me, it can happen.
He caresses her hair, looking up at the sky... These twofigures remain there in the open field, alone with each other, as one.
YOUNG MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)So now you had no reason to comeback...
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)Let's just say, I now had a reasonto stay.
10 EXT. SEASHORE - DAY
The raft makes its way into the waves for the first time. Gabriel and Luzia let it go, admiring their creation.
9.
LUZIAYes! We did it!
She kisses him in the cheek.
LUZIA (CONT'D)Come, let's go!
Gabriel looks at the waves, thinking it over. Hesitantly, hefollows her. He helps her get on the raft.
She places a long stick with a white piece of blanket, as aflag. "LUZ" is written on it.
LUZIA (CONT'D)You like it?
GABRIELOf course.
LUZIAThis is so exciting!
(yells, waving bye)Au revoir, this side of the world!
Gabriel feels the water surrounding his knees, he looksaround, uneasy.
LUZIA (CONT'D)It's okay. Don't worry, give meyour hand.
GABRIELNo, I'm all right.
He gives a steady push to the raft.
LUZIAWha -what are you doing?
GABRIELI'm sorry, Luzia. I'm not going.
LUZIAWhat? No, don't be silly, give meyour hand.
GABRIELHold on tight. Be careful.
He gives a last strong push.
LUZIANo! Stop it! You have to come! GABRIEL!
10.
She wants to jump off, hesitates. Her cries implore forhim... indeed, it is the saddest of sights.
GABRIEL(teary)
Don't worry! I don't want to go. Youcan come back for me. I'll be here!
LUZIANO! You have to. That's not how itworks!
GABRIELI'll be fine! See?
(holds the pendantaloft)
You're still with me!
The quick waves summon the raft into the vast sea... as ifwanting her.
LUZIANo, Gabriel!... Please! I'm scared -I can't swi--
The raft falls apart in an instant. Gabriel, petrified, stares blankly.
GABRIELLUZIA!!
He finally reacts, puts the pendant in his pocket.
He rushes into the water; breathes heavily, filled with fear, though not enough to stop him.
With each stroke he takes, he now finds himself closer andcloser to what's left of the raft.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)Luzia!... Luzia!
There's not a hint of her... Gabriel tries to stay afloat, but the waters siege over his body.
He looks around, trying to grab onto something... there'snothing nearby.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)Luzia... Lu- Luz...
His body is failing him... he fights, but it's useless.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)And that's how much I remember...
11.
11 EXT. UNDERWATER - LATER
Up in the surface, a body in silhouette drifts across theazure waters.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)In the end, I succumbed to the warmthof the sea's embrace...
12 EXT. SEA - AFTERNOON
Gabriel's face, emerges, eyes closed... motionless, but witha calm serenity in its expression.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.)I allowed it to drown the fears thatwere kept inside me... and for thatinstant, I felt free. I felt HERwithin me...
His body makes its way across... from afar, it navigates tothe other side, as a beam of light follows it from the sky.
OLD MAN'S VOICE (V.O.) (CONT'D)Luzia... the light of my life.
13 INT. GABRIEL'S BEDROOM - AFTERNOON
The image of the sea dissolves to that of a sky, seen from awindow frame.
The sea still calls from afar.
GABRIEL, now an old man, lies on an old-fashioned bed. Hiseyes alone show more sorrow than any tear could ever allow.
OLD MAN/GABRIELAnd then I woke up... here. As ifnone of that ever happened...
SAMUEL, late 20's, glasses, elegant, sits on a chair besidehim. He looks at him, compassionately... Thinking it over.
YOUNG MAN/SAMUELDo you want to know what reallyhappened?
GABRIELYes, tell me... where did my life goafter that?
SAMUELIt went nowhere, Uncle Gab...
12.
13A. FLASH
SAMUEL (V.O.) (CONT'D)Because... you never made that trip -you never made it back home.
Gabriel, mid-30's, covered in blood, lies on an isolatedstreet... eyes wide open. Far behind, a wrecked vehicle, glass and smoke everywhere.
At a short distance, a bridge is visible.
BACK TO SCENE
Gabriel, speechless, listens attentively.
SAMUEL (CONT'D)You survived the accident, but youwere asleep... a coma that lastedalmost thirty years.
13B. FLASH
Gabriel, asleep, in the same bed. SAMUEL'S FATHER, elegant, stands beside him, as a true brother. LITTLE SAMUEL holdshis father's hand.
SAMUEL (V.O.) (CONT'D)Those who loved you, stayed besideyou. And like that, time past by...
The image now dissolves to a group of PEOPLE, surroundingthe bed -as a family. Then, it dissolves to a WOMAN,beautiful, reading to him in privacy -keeping him company...
BACK TO SCENE
SAMUEL (CONT'D)And still, you didn't wake up... butwe had hope.
Gabriel remains speechless, raveled in thought. VOICES areheard from another floor of the house, like a gathering.
SAMUEL (CONT'D)Well, I'm sure everyone is eager tosee you.
He holds Gabriel's hand, stands up.
GABRIELWho?
SAMUEL... Your family.
13.
He smiles, and heads to the door.
GABRIELWait... Luzia -was she a dream or amemory?
SAMUELWell, she was your companion -yoursavior. You let her into a worldmade from pieces of your dearestmemories... Think of her as both.
Gabriel looks at the window... pensive.
GABRIEL(whispers)
I know she's real.
The voices become louder, as more seem to join the crowd. Samuel turns the knob.
SAMUELDon't worry, uncle Gab. Everythingwill come back to you. You'll see.
He opens the door, and walks out as the joyful voices of afamily reunion are heard vividly.
The door shuts. Gabriel remains with his head turned towardsthe window... alone with his own thoughts.
A flickering beam of nostalgia lingers in his eyes... and sohe closes them. In the distance, the sea calls once more.
14 EXT. SEASHORE - DAY
The majestic azure sea spreads throughout. At the shore, the beautiful Luzia dances around, letting her petite feetin and out of the water.
She stops, turns at the sight of something.
Gabriel, handsome, as we remember him, approaches to theshore. He smiles at her sight, and so does she.
From a distance, both meet... and they kiss at last.
15 INT. GABRIEL'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Gabriel, eyes closed -asleep perhaps- bears the same calmexpression that we saw at sea.
Beside him, on his open hand, rests Luzia's pendant.
FADE OUT.
