WELCOME FROM
Congratulations on considering Cairns and
Wanggulay for your next holiday.
Our aim is to help you have a Holiday
of a Lifetime and with that in mind we
have compiled this Guide. It contains
information from guests, owners and
managers over the 10 years we have been
operating as a luxury rainforest retreat on
all the best things to see and do in the area.
The name Wanggulay means sulphur
crested white cockatoo which are often seen
around the Barron River area. The name
acknowledges the traditional owners of the
land, the Djabugay.
We love referrals, which is the how the
majority of our guests get to hear about us.
Feel free to share this Guide with anyone
who might be interested in exploring and
staying in Cairns.

LIFE IN THE RAINFOREST CANOPY
The Barron River flows from the Tablelands
to the Coral Sea as it cuts through the
rainforest in the spectacular Barron Gorge.
The river widens and the current slows
amongst the rocky outcrops and small
clearings.
Perched on the hillside above the Barron
River your luxurious rainforest home awaits
you, filled with exotic oriental Balinese
furniture, Persian carpets and day beds for
relaxing on the balconies with polished
hardwoods and handsome statues.
Natural ochres, earth- colours and textures
invite you into the main living area under a
large timber cathedral ceiling.
On this floor you will find the master
bedroom with its own ensuite and spa
bath. A private bridgeway access from the
master bedroom directly to the pool makes
about Wanggulay
swimming an easy pleasure any time of the
day.
The second bedroom has its own bathroom
and shower facilities on the same floor.
The spacious open- plan living area with gourmet
kitchen, extends outside to a wide verandah high
above the forest floor in the treetops. Bi- fold
doors slide back, allowing the large outdoor area
to merge the living space. On hot days, with the
doors closed, the integrated air- conditioning
keeps the house cool.
On the floor below is another guest wing with a

entertaining easy. Or contemplate the river on
the meditation/ wedding platform amongst
the trees on the hillside below the house; a
lovely spot for early morning yoga followed by
breakfast.
The private pathway winds its way past the
platform down to the river, where you can take
a short riverside stroll along the Barron River.
Further afield, the Great Barrier Reef, World
Heritage rainforests, the vibrant tropical
beaches of Palm Cove and Trinity Beach lined
with coconut trees compliment the vibrant city of
Cairns. Wanggulay is a place to relax and enjoy
the tranquility of the rainforest and all the region
has to offer.

TROPICAL CUISINE IN PARADISE
For many guests, enjoying the vibrant
cuisine of Tropical Northern Australia can
be one of the highlights of your stay. Here is
where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier
Reef, two world heritage environments
combining to produce some of the most
stunningly diverse arrays of food and
beverages in all of the tropical zones of the
world.
The “go to” website for foodies is
www.australiantropicalfoods.com
which provides information about
exotic fruits, seafood, gourmet produce,
restaurants and tropical food trails that take
in Cairns, the Northern Beaches and the
Tablelands. They also offer food trails and
tours.
Cairns has an abundance of world class
food guide
restaurants and quality cuisine, partly
because of the availability of fresh produce
from the cooler Atherton tablelands; home to
world class coffee, dairy produce and a large
supply of tropical organic fruit and vegetables
sold at the local markets. Here are some of
our favourite food places….
BEGIN YOUR GOURMET ADVENTURE
12
In the centre of Cairns, drink young green
coconut water and then have it cracked open
to eat the flesh whilst sampling the seasonal
produce of the far north. Fresh locally
produced pasta, bread, dips, Mungalli creek
organic cheeses (www.mungallicreekdairy.
com.au) and an organic butchery create a
full gourmet experience.

RUSTY’S MARKETS
Every Sunday from 8.00 – 1.30pm, Port
Douglas markets come alive with a
wonderful selection of local produce from
raw chocolate, dried mango and dragon
fruit, Daintree chai and the only grower of
organic vanilla essence in Australia, Vanilla
Australia; taste their real vanilla icecream.
Visit the coconut boys: Adrian and his
family who will pierce one of
PORT DOUGLAS MARKETShis home grown coconuts and once you have
drunk the water allow him to gouge out the
flesh and combine with a ripe banana. Listen
to the story of this vegan family and how they
use coconuts as their staple food. Of course
the markets also have a stunning variety of
handmade gifts, clothes and natural products.

DINE ON SEAFOOD
FRESH LOCAL SEAFOOD
Now that you have your fresh produce, what
would you like to cook?
My favourite recipe is nut crusted mahi
mahi. Blend ½ cup of macadamia nuts, ½
cup of shredded coconut, large bunch of
coriander with most of root, knob of ginger,
garlic, salt and lemon. Place fillets in a
baking dish and press the nut crust into the
fillets. Bake at 180 deg for 15 mins or
WHAT TO COOKuntil cooked and crust is browned.
For more creative cooking inspiration, treat
yourself to a copy of Claire Richard’s book,
Tropical Cuisines: Cooking in Clare’s Kitchen.
Clare’s passion for the produce in this part of the
world has been poured into this beautiful book

This is the destination restaurant for local
and international visitors to Cairns. At
Ochre you can be assured that the produce
is local. With very well respected chef
Craig Squire in the kitchen, cooking local
and indigenous produce with patriotic
Australian flavours, the menu is intelligent
and beautifully flavoured. A thoughtful
wine list offers diners a guide to eating in
harmony with the chosen bottle.
Ochre Restaurant has won many Australian

THE TO WANGGULAY
For 10 years my sister Bella and I (Cassia) now age 15 and 12 have been traveling to our Cairns paradise, Wanggulay. Many of these suggestions are our favourite things to do each time we come; it is almost like a tradition. We also like to explore new places. So here we offer you our ideas in the kids’ guide to Wanggulay!
GO TURTLE SPOTTING IN THE RIVER
kids guide
FUN IN THE POOL
The pool at Wanggulay is like your own private pool and spa! It’s a heated plunge pool and we looove the spa jets. Even when its cold outside we can heat it up and feel really cosy in the water.
A RIVER ADVENTURE
The Barron River is just below the house. There is a private walkway to the river through the wedding platform. If you walk left you can walk along the top of the bank on a bush track for about 200 meters. As the track comes to an end you will be able to
see Lake Placid. If you walk the other way, to the right, you will go past the other houses. If you look carefully in the river you can sometimes see lots of long- necked turtles that live in the river below Wanggulay. They eat whole fish such as whitebait and the occasional prawns or yabbies.

FITZROY ISLAND
BARRON RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK
One of the highlights of a holiday at Wanggulay
is the accessibility of the Barron River Gorge
National Park from the front door. You can do
short walks of 30 mins up Stoney Creek falls
or longer walks of 4- 6 hours or around 14 kms
with spectacular views from Glacier Rock the
dominant bluff in the valley.
Although you can visit the park all year round,
the cooler, drier months of the year (from May
to September) are the best times to visit. The
weather is warm with reduced humidity and
average maximum temperatures of 26 °C.

CATCH THE CAT TO FITZROY ISLAND
Fitzroy Island is in a National park 29km
from Cairns accessible by a 45 min fast cat
journey from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal.
It’s a great day out for snorkeling, hiking the
summit or walking to the lighthouse though
it can be hot in the height of summer for
hiking.
Hire snorkeling gear and take a delicious
picnic in a shaded cove. The sea trampoline
is great fun to dive off. There is a resort on the
island where you can eat and stay.

CAIRNS BOTANIC GARDENS
Just 4 km from the city on Collins Ave
the Gardens are a stunning series of
interconnected botanic spaces including:
- Flecker Garden
- Centenary Lakes - Saltwater and
Freshwater
- The Rainforest Boardwalk
- Mount Whitfield Conservation Park
- The Gondwanan Heritage Garden
- Munro Martin Fern House
The new Visitors centre houses a cafe,
interpretive centre and educational space. If
you don’t get a chance to visit the Daintree
on your trip to FNQ, the Botanic Gardens
gives you an appealing and accessible taste
of the tropics.
If you would like to join the locals for a
brisk early morning or evening walk/run.
take on the Red Arrow , a 1.3 km track in
the Mt Whitfield Conservation Park. Rated
as the best walk in Cairns, many enthusiasts
carry rocks from the base for extra resistance
- make sure you don’t pick up someone’s
favourite pet rock! Red and Blue arrow circuits
are accessible near the Visitors Centre and
Tanks Gallery.
We love the Rainforest Boardwalks which
are reminiscent of scenes from the movie
The Piano, with gnarly pandaus roots. Or
the sumptuous flowering tropical gingers
all pinks, reds and oranges. The Boardwalks are
accessible from Collins Ave or Greenslopes St
near Centenary Lakes. (Similar boardwalks are
found on the airport road so if you want a last
taste of Cairns allow another half hour before
your flight departs)
Entry is free and the Botanic Gardens are open
from 7.30am to 5.30pm every day of the year.
