EDITOR’SNOTE

Living in LuxuryThinking of putting more luxury into your life? It’s time to decide what you

want. There are so many ways to surround yourself with luxury – it all depends on your vision. Whether it’s overlooking the waves on an exotic beach, sunken into a sumptuous sofa on a quiet Sunday morning with a good co  ee, on a sunny terrace with some champers or while awaiting your Maserati from the valet, indulge yourself in our magazine and read about bringing more luxury into your home and your life.

If you’re trying to defi ne what luxury is, this issue you’ll want to tune in as Jon Montgomery, longtime Calgary resident, Olympian and host of CTV’s hit show The Amazing Race Canada, talks to us about the luxuries in his life. He’s travelled the world, he’s won Gold, he’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes, but he does love a nice cashmere robe! He’s got some interesting takes on luxury, they’re quite exhilarating. Though not his hometown, living in Calgary has been fortuitous for Jon – he credits this city with being the gateway to his success.

Upping your lifestyle factor, you’ll want to take your cue from local interior designer James McIntyre. Catering to an ultra-luxe clientele that own two, three and four homes, James defi nes luxury with design that will enhance lifestyle. A summer home, a mountain home, a desert home – they all seem to enjoy the luxury of escaping the cold weather. James’ lavish designs give residents more than just a beautiful place to live and escape to, he gives them a home that they feel truly expresses who they are. (Though having two, three and four homes at a time is an undeniable luxury, bar none!)

This issue we’ve also got some fabulous inspiration for luxurious elements that can easily be brought into your home, from water features that o  er beauty and tranquility, to expert advice on fl ooring that will add the ‘wow’ factor to your home.

We hope you enjoy this issue.

www.Calgary.fourseasonssunrooms.com403.287.0008

Enjoy our beautiful and energy-effi cient year-roundsunrooms and conservatories

For centuries, family, friends and neighbours have been gathering together on those hot, lazy days of summer on the front porch or the backyard patio.

But with the windy days and cooler fall weather that Calgary is renowned for, that extra entertaining space can no longer be used.

On those dreary days, a sunroom or conservatory becomes a great getaway and oasis from the rain and thunder. Largely constructed of glass windows and doors, sunrooms naturally retain heat, creating a warm space to relax, read, work or entertain. While giving the sense of being outdoors, a Four Seasons Sunrooms protects you from rain, cooler weather, dirt and insects.

Today, sunrooms are more popular than ever. The sunroom serves as a great transitional room that blurs the line between the indoor and outdoor space. Although the average size of new homes has been shrinking, demand for one bright and airy room continues to grow. It’s no wonder – a sunroom extends your living and entertaining space.

“Sunrooms frame the beauty of the outdoors. They are almost like being outside,” says Jeff Wyndham, co-owner of Calgary’s Four Seasons Sunrooms, a Consumer Choice Award winner for 12 years in a row. “In addition, everybody is looking for ways to add value to their homes. Sunrooms not only add beauty and space, but they can increase the worth of your home as well.”

We all know that sunlight has a way of lifting your spirits and makes you feel better. A sunroom is also where you can curl up with a book and a cup of tea; a special place, a retreat where you can get away from it all.

Though sunrooms typically appear in the rear of a home, Four Seasons Sunrooms has placed them in the front as well. Sunrooms feature a number of elements such as cathedral ceilings, French doors, ceiling fans, electricity and carpeting.

What differentiates Four Seasons Sunrooms from its competitors is the glazing/reflective

coating on the glass that is exclusive to its products. “This reflective coating reflects out 82 per cent of the heat so it doesn’t become oppressively hot during the summer months,” says Wyndham. “Alternatively, during the winter months it stays cozy and warm.”

Working with its team of design consultants, customers have a large selection of styles to choose from. As well, Wyndham says, there are in-house designers that will go to a home owner’s residence to help them choose the best sunroom for their lifestyle needs.

As one of the world’s largest designers, manufacturers and installers of sunrooms, conservatories, patio enclosures, solariums and greenhouse additions, you can rest assured that Four Seasons Sunrooms will do the job right.

Wyndham, along with his partner Jeff Paquet, have been in the business for more than a decade and purchased Four Seasons Sunrooms six years ago. From the initial meeting to design and completion, its professional team works with you every step of the process to ensure your complete satisfaction. Depending on the size and intricacy of the project, a sunroom takes between a week to a month to complete. For a free, no obligation in-home design consultation, call 403-287-0008 or visit www.fourseasonscalgary.ca.

I asked Jon about luxury. Would it be fabulous trips? Well, he’s been across Canada

and around the world with The Amazing Race Canada. Would it be riches and jewels? Well, he’s already got the Gold from his fi rst place fi nish In the Men’s Skeleton event at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. So what is luxury to Jon? His answers were exhilarating, if not just a little bit charming.

Page 14: Luxury Living in Calgary and Area - Sep., 2014

Maybe, like they say, “You can take the boy out of a small town but you can’t take the small town out of the boy.” Jon’s first answer to my question about luxury was to dig a VISA receipt for $341 out of his wallet from July 30, 2000. He explained that, as a graduation present to himself, he splurged on a tandem skydive jump with Skydive Toronto after graduating with his Automotive Business degree at Georgian College. A poor student at the time, he said, that was a huge deal to be able to do it.

Of course, digging a little further into his idea of luxury, Jon appreciates the finer things too – the spa and the get-aways with his wife. He did replace his ‘Blue Robeo’ (a blue polyester robe) with a cashmere monogrammed one, and he did buy himself a Chevy SSR after his Olympic Gold medal win. But he’s got a lot to say about the luxury of opportunity. Of having opportunity and making opportunity. About getting to experience amazing things.

Coming to Calgary after college was a pinnacle decision in his life. Starting his career with ADESA as a car auctioneer, living in Calgary opened Jon up to the opportunity to try skeleton racing. This came about after years of hockey playing, trying speed skating and thinking about getting into luge. But for this athlete, being able to get out – whether it’s to Canada Olympic Park, the mountains – or the gym in his garage – Calgary was the perfect fit.

“I spent 13 years in Calgary. I like the fact that it seemed to have lots of people from small towns. It’s special, it’s a city with Olympic legacy. It has everything.

“I lived in Tuscany, in the North West. I loved driving from Calgary to Canmore and looking at the mountains. Calgary has been the gateway to almost every opportunity

I’ve had. The opportunity to realize goals and life dreams.”The notoriety from his Gold medal win (and possibly his rendition

of O Canada while drinking a pitcher of beer in Olympic Village during the post-race celebrations of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics) earned him a nomination for host of The Amazing Race Canada when the franchise came north.

“I was really lucky,” he says. Maybe a bit of luck, but once you see him in action, it’s easy to see that he’s the perfect fit. With incredible energy, exuberance and athleticism, the role of host for this show was made for Jon.

One of his favourite parts of the show has been interacting with the dogs. “I loved the Newfoundland dogs pulling the carts up the hill with groceries,” he says of Season One. The huskies and dog-sledding were also top of the list. But the activities Jon’s been able to experience, the huge stunts on the show are something he truly enjoys. “Skydiving, jumping off of a 760-metre tower – the world’s tallest bungee jump! I used to pay to go and skydive, now I get to do it – for free!”

What’s next in the adventure? Jon thinks the flying squirrel suits looked like fun – explaining the Red Bull flying squirrel suits he’d seen in action. These let you soar and fly around after a jump, before releasing a parachute. Basically an aerodynamic winged suit that allows you to float, glide and fly through the air. And Jon has contemplated doing it. “Or maybe start a family.“

“The most rewarding things in life exist outside your comfort zone,” says Jon. And while jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and rappelling down a skyscraper with nothing but a harness – “I trust in my safety equipment” – his comfort zone probably is a bit further out there than most of us!

Mussels in Black Bean SauceThis recipe was first created by our owner, Pat O’Connor, who loves entertaining and would cook it for friends and family. Our chef, Ken Canavan, has since adjusted the recipe, but it has become Cilantro’s most popular and recognizable item.

Our Cilantro StoryA HeArtfelt tHAnksDuring the past six years I have had the privilege of working with staff who have been a part of CRMR for 20 plus years and have gotten to know regulars who have been coming to Cilantro for the same amount of time. They have shown me the heart of what Cilantro is, its soul, and the allure that keeps us all coming back. I remind myself and my coworkers everyday that Cilantro is a living, breathing human being – what you invest in it, Cilantro gives back. To me it has given me everything: my friends, my wife, my career and my passion. Cilantro is my best friend and like any good friend I will always be indebted to it. Thank you CRMR.

INTERIORS WITH ELEGANCE creates luxury renovations

When it comes to renovations, luxury homeowners are looking for the best in fi nishes, features, details and design, says renovation expert Darrin Burton.

“About 65 per cent of our business involves luxury renovations such as high-end kitchens, spa-like ensuites and whole home interiors,” comments Burton, the founder and CEO of Interiors With Elegance. “Our clients expect high-end quality including custom cabinetry, premium appliances, smart steam showers, heated fl oors and new technology incorporating motion-sensitive LED lighting”

Among the features luxury homeowners want in the kitchen are over-sized fridges, wine coolers, built-in beverage centres, custom appliance front panels [to match cabinetry], commercial style gas ranges, double wall ovens and cabinetry to the ceiling.

A new feature that Burton offers is the touch-to-open cabinets. “These are ideal for quick access when your hands are full, simply touch with your knee or elbow to open or close.

“We’re also doing elaborate ensuites with steam showers that have speaker systems, aromatherapy, LED lights and body sprays,” Burton notes. Heated tile fl oors and towel racks on set timers, dramatic free-standing tubs and even coffee/beverage stations between the bedroom and closet area are among the popular items.

Interiors recently completed a project in Springbank that involved a large ensuite with a big walk-in closet. “Our team reconfi gured the space creating a refi ned and modern bearing with greater functionality. Encompassing this was a built-in wardrobe left open to a free-standing tub with a rustic tiled-wall backdrop, curbless walk-in shower and his and her vanities,” Burton explains.

by HEATHER RYAN

They also built a luxury ensuite in a Hampton home that is highlighted by blue LED lights and a waterfall tile design in the shower to give them their own spa-like retreat.

“We’re currently doing a whole home interior renovation over $500,000, which involves gutting the complete interior, creating a whole new main and upper fl oor,” Burton says. “The home looks traditional from the outside, but is modern inside with lots of glass and exposed steel to give an industrial NY feel. We’ve integrated some unique elements with these clients such as kitchen cabinets in a deep metallic grey, inlaid LED lighting between the hardwood fl ooring illuminating the high walls in the great room, for a very different look.”

Interiors With Elegance, which has been crafting elegant interiors for more than 25 years, is known for its creativity, detailed design and commitment to quality.

“We’re a design build company that has an in-house team of designers and drafts people who work side-by-side to generate new and interesting ideas,” Burton says. “We’re constantly working at bettering ourselves and we take time to listen to our clients and offer them designs that are thoughtful, creative, unique and functional.”

The company also has its own custom mill-work shop that ensures the highest quality of workmanship; and a design studio to help guide customers through the renovation process.

as well as aesthetic treatments like manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials, peels and more. It’s beauty for the body and soul. But the whole experience is more than just the treatment. From the moment you arrive at the Spa, you’re pampered. The pace slows down. You change into a robe. You can sit, have some tea, enjoy the whirlpool, have a steam or just decompress. When you’re finished your treatment(s), the staff welcome you to relax and encourage you to continue enjoying the facilities. The Stillwater Spa also offers a serenity room post-treatment. “There is a small water feature, nature music, comfy lounge chairs, blankets – it’s a place to come back to yourself after treatment,” Lindsay explains.

While treating yourself to a trip to the spa is a great luxury to include in life, you can easily bring these elements into your home for daily enjoyment. Find a big, thick and fluffy robe. Add stylish fixtures, warm lighting and some indulgence. You may not have a massage table and therapist on staff, but you can include a deep, jetted soaker tub, a steam shower and even a sauna.

Lindsay suggests the final spa touches, like using oils in the shower as the Stillwater Spa uses in its steam room. Find some refreshing soaps, creams and other products that you really enjoy. The Stillwater Spa carries a line of aromatherapy products, you can do this in your bathroom, too.

Whether bringing in a few small elements or creating a whole new bathroom, indulging yourself in that spa feel at home is a great luxury that’s easily included in your day. Why shouldn’t you be pampered!

StyleFile

The spa. it’s one of life’s quintessential luxuries. The spa exists only to indulge and pamper, to treat, heal and nourish

the body. it’s relaxing and peaceful, a place that brings serenity to a bustling schedule and urban pace.

In fact, that indulgence and serenity has translated into an actual style. Many new homes offer the ‘spa-like ensuite’ and many renovations are going for that ‘spa feel’ in the design. It’s a combination of colour palette, textures and materials that set the stage for various skin and body products, creams and aromas. The fixtures and treatments add to the spa factor.

So, do you want to go to the spa, or do you want to bring the spa home? The Stillwater Spa (stillwaterspacalgary.com), located in Calgary’s Hyatt Regency, is a

gorgeous example. Redesigned a year ago, explains Lindsay Goldthorpe, marketing manager at the Hyatt Regency, the spa introduced numerous water features. “We really focus on water, because water can be quite calming,” she explains. There are stream-like features that run down walls to steam rooms, a whirlpool in the changeroom area and steam room.

The colours and materials add to the soothing and serene environment. Blues mingle with neutrals. “There are lots of wood grains,” she explains, with elements such as cork floors, historic sandstone walls and natural light. “A lot of what you’ll see in the spa is earthy, the feel of being in a calm, foresty area.”

These design elements are easily brought into the home. A spa-like bathroom – whether large or small – is easy to achieve. With a calm colour palette and natural materials, it enables you to bring that serenity into your lifestyle. It’s a great way to begin the day, and it’s a great place to help you unwind and end the day. In fact, Lindsay explains, the Stillwater Spa offers a ‘Sunrise’ package in the morning and a ‘Sunset’ spa package in the early evening for exactly this reason. One therapy invigorates, the other de-stresses.

The Stillwater Spa offers numerous professional treatments, including a detoxing body wrap, an H2O scrub, therapeutic massage, reflexology and a variety of specialized therapies,

The spa. it’s one of life’s quintessential luxuries.

James’ carte blanche clients come to him because they know he won’t just deliver something trendy, beautiful and opulent. Though there’s no denying the homes he’s designed are stunning and sumptuous, they’re also well-refereneced reflections of the needs of his clientele.

“The ability to have more than one residence is obviously a luxury, ” says James. “At that level, people have the ability to express different lifestyles through different homes.

“The big luxury is to be able to express the different sides of themselves – different energy, different feelings.“ James finds that while some may want their primary Calgary home to be more traditional, with space to entertain, work and handle the daily demands of life, it’s not what they want in their secondary homes. “Whatever you do – we love our Calgary house, but we don’t want our Calgary house!” is often the main or only instruction clients give him when he designs their second, third or fourth homes. Instead, that is

where his clients are indulged – not just by spending a lot of money to have a beautiful home, but by having a home that enables them to enjoy being themselves and surrounded by a style they love; by furnishings and design elements that let them freely express themselves. It’s a reflection of who they are when they’re not hard at work.

For some clients, James has had the opportunity to design several homes. In addition to a Calgary residence, they may have a vacation home in Palm Springs or Arizona to escape the cold, an island retreat around Victoria, or something in the mountains.

“People love the lifestyle, the slow pace of Vancouver Island and Victoria. It’s a quick plane ride away from the busy lifestyle of Calgary,” James says. This home on Rutland Road in Victoria is the client’s third. “It’s a fantasy of luxury lifestyle, of olden time – lovingly restored, filled with antiques, expression art, hand-painted wallpaper. It doesn’t look like their other homes.”

“People like to surround themselves with luxury because they work really hard and want to enjoy,” James explains. This is true regardless of income. It’s important to make the place you live into a haven, one that allows you to enjoy your lifestyle.

Whether it’s a small, inexpensive find or a major purchase, it’s these things that we bring into our homes that enhance our lifestyles. It’s about using the space that we have properly. It’s about thinking beyond the aesthetic. It’s about creating a home we love that will love us back.

Whether it’s arrranging an inviting area for entertaining; carving out a small nook with all the comforts for settling in with a good book; clearing out a space for practicing yoga; or just investing in a good mattress and great sheets so that each night’s sleep is as divine as the next – these are the luxuries that add to your lifestyle.

It’s just that James’ clients can afford to do this on a bigger scale.

James describes this Calgary home on Britannia Drive as having the feel of a Manhattan apartment. “It’s understated luxury. These people are more about warmth, elegance and glamour.” It’s one of their four homes – the other three are in Palm Springs, Lake Okanagan and the couples’ home town of Boston. While working in the city, this is their quiet haven.

“Calgary is an entrepreneurial city, with risk-takers and people who really go for it and make the big money,” says James. But, he explains, “we’re very down-to-earth. Even the wealthiest are unassuming.

“I’m fortunate to have clients who want to express good taste. Maybe a little ‘wow’ factor.” The entrepreneurial types embrace risk. It’s not for everyone, but that ‘go-for-it’ mentality also translates into design. They don’t mind doing something dramatically different than the typical trend. It’s part of what makes them successful. It’s their nature to go beyond the mainstream.

James doesn’t just design it, he lives it. With a wonderful peak into his own home-away-from-home in Phoenix, like many Calgarians, he loves the city but needs an escape from the cold. Getting to spend some time in the heat during the freezing weather, he says, is a great luxury.

The feel of this home is exotic. Moroccan spice fills this kasbah with rich fabrics and bursts of colour, texture and pattern. With a passion for entertaining, and a need for relaxing and indulging, the space is ideal for both, easily transformed from tranquil and relaxing to a vibrant room that invites guests to get comfortable, linger, mingle and enjoy.

Ultimately, a home should be enjoyed, should be a reflection of its residents and should cater to the residents’ needs. Good design brings just that. To surround yourself with luxury is to understand how you want to live. As James says, “It’s all about lifestyle.”

‘adults only’ activity room, featuring things that I cannot elaborate on... We’ve also done a few secret rooms with hidden doors, vaults, etc. And, superhero themed rooms such as the Superman entry gate into a fan’s themed wine room. 4) What’s your favourite vacation spot? The Beaches resort in Negril, Jamaica. We’ve been going there since before the kids were born and we love the weather and the Caribbean Sea – it’s so warm. I guess we’ve been there 19 times. We go to other places but that resort just feels like home.

5) Based on your experience, what area in the home do people most prefer to renovate, and why?We do undertake whole home renovations, but if we’re talking individual spaces, I’d have to say the kitchen. It’s the central gathering place in the home and a lot of people doing a renovation project want to create a new, open concept design. They want a bigger space for the kitchen and are removing walls and making the space more functional, practical and open. They want to also upgrade their space with high-end appliances and enormous islands with lots of seating where people can gather. And the islands are becoming every day eating areas replacing the dining nook.

6) Who had the most influence on your life? That’s easy – my father. He was very much a well-principled guy, an honest farmer who was big on the handshake – you could take his word to the bank – and he had a great work ethic. He instilled a lot of that in me and I try to pass that along to my kids. 7) A book or a movie?Movie – I like a great action or adventure or a good duster… pretty much anything other than horror.

8) What’s your favourite sport to watch? It’s always been hockey. I’m a Flames fan even though sometimes it’s frustrating to watch.

9) What is the biggest renovation project you ever undertook? In 2011, we did a $1.1 million complete home renovation to an historic home – it was an historic restoration project. We do quite a few of these, and they’re fun to do because you take a 100-year-old home and integrate modern

amenities, systems and features while still maintaining the original character of the home. It’s fun, but challenging. We’re actually just starting a similar project, also around the $1 million mark, to a heritage home in the city.

10) What’s the best dish you cook? I do like to cook and I’m often the Sunday dinner/special occasion cook, so I’d say my best and favourite dish to cook is a turkey dinner with all the fixings for Christmas or Thanksgiving. I’m also into smoking and grilling – I like to barbecue and have a few types of barbecues to play with – it’s kind of a hobby for me.

These range from $100,000 to more than $1 million, including historical restorations in the older areas and other luxurious renovations throughout Calgary. Luxury Living posed our Top 10 Questions to this well-known renovator.

builderQ&A

1) What do you love most about Calgary?Calgary is a vibrant city that has so much to offer and it’s always on the move. It’s a very progressive city and I love the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives here.

2) What community do you live in, and if you were to move, which community would you choose?I have lived in Tuxedo Park, which is in the inner city, for almost 20 years and I like that it is central with great access to all quadrants of the city. But, if I was to move I wouldn’t go that far away – I would probably choose Mount Pleasant or Rosemont with a lot backing onto Confederation Park. I love that park and those communities are still centrally located.

3) What’s the most unique item/feature that you have ever put in a home that you were renovating? That’s really difficult to say because there have been so many. We’ve done some pretty crazy ones including an

Overhead Door Company offers custom designs for luxury homes

business profile

Homeowners who want to enhance

the curb appeal of their luxury

properties are adding high-end

custom garage doors that are designed to make

a statement.

“The garage often covers about 40 per cent

of the front of your home so homeowners,

especially those who have high-end properties,

want a custom garage door that not only improves

the esthetics, but are unique; it becomes a

signature piece for the home,” says Craig Watson,

general sales manager with the Overhead Door

Company.

“Luxury homeowners are looking for style

and they want a garage door that will match

the architecture of their home,” he says, noting

that Overhead Door’s premier series offers

three different types of garage doors for high-

end homes with the wood and aluminum being

the most popular.

“The Signature Carriage Wood door is a

full custom door that is designed to match the

colour and architecture, while the Modern

Aluminum is a sleek, sophisticated door that

combines glass and aluminum for visual appeal,”

Watson explains. “The aluminum doors offer

an extraordinary look. There are 197 colours

to choose from and if there isn’t a colour that

matches, we can create a custom colour, and

these doors come in 10 different glaze options

so you can get a door uniquely yours.”

A great example of the Modern Aluminum

style is a garage door the Overhead Door

Company recently installed on a home in Calgary.

The luxury property owner created a very modern look with lots of glass across the front and

wanted a garage door to match.

“We created a custom door of polished modern aluminum – the whole door is glass with

aluminum stiles and rails so it’s very stunning and matches the look of home completely,” Watson

says.

“We also have a customer who wanted a door that could go over a car lift in the garage and

he drives his car down into the basement,” he adds. “It’s a very custom design and shows that

our garage doors are not only esthetically pleasing they’re highly functional.”

In business for more than 90 years the Overhead Door Company is a worldwide company

that sets the standard and offers top-of-the-line products to meet the needs of residential,

commercial and industrial customers.

The Overhead Door Company is able to create custom designs because it engineers its own

products and has its own testing facility. All the products go through rigorous tests to ensure

the highest standards in quality, safety, security and long-term performance.

“We continue to be a leader in the industry” Watson says. “We offer a very well thought out

balance between performance, esthetics and personal choice.”

Besides being able to create custom garage doors for luxury homes, the company carries a

wide range of doors offering different colours, materials and styles giving homeowners a huge

selection to choose from.

Personally I am a spa girl. I love having a spa room outdoors, and they can be made so pleasing to look at by having a beautiful paver patio under the tub and in the surrounding area with room for lounging. By incorporating a pergola over the spa area you can do built-ins for storing cushions, towels etc. We can also install hooks or places to put robes away when you dash out on a cold winter evening to soak in the hot tub after a hard day!

Once all the hardscape is in place I

like to create gardens surrounding the outdoor spa using plant material with all seasons’ interest. It is so relaxing to look out over a beautiful summer garden, but it is also pleasing to look out over snow covered topiaries or top graft trees, shrubs with interesting twig colour and seed pods on grasses or perennials.

I have never had a pool so went to an expert, Lynn Lucyshyn, president of Oasis Pools and Spas Ltd., to answer some of my questions. Asking her about what is new and exciting in pools and spas, she said a large number of people are investing in the ‘endless pool’ which is a small, eight by 16-foot pool with a jet stream to swim into for exercise. This makes sense as even estate lots have been cut back in size. It gets harder all the time to get equipment in to excavate for the retaining walls and patios Escapes creates, so outdoor pools would be even more difficult. As one of the reasons people invest in a pool is for exercise, the smaller endless pool makes complete sense if you are in the city. If your home in on an acreage, getting equipment in is not usually a problem

The soothing sound of running water also helps block out external sounds that we do not want, such as traffic noise. It can attract birds and other forms of wildlife in some forms in gardens, and overall just completes outdoor living spaces!

In very small gardens we are usually limited to fountains for moving water, or otherwise bird baths. Both of these items come in many different styles and designs. They can be made from a variety of different materials so there is never a problem finding one to match the style of the gardens and outdoor furnishings. Going to the extreme other end, if you have a large estate lot or acreage you can incorporate several water features, from fountains in plantings to pools, spas or water features such as falls and ponds in your outdoor living spaces. Ponds can be small features in the corner of a garden or elaborate large ponds with one or more falls. If you are staying away from this type of water feature because of maintenance, but would really enjoy one, you can hire a maintenance company to service them just as you do with pools and spas.

Whatever space and style of home and gardens you have, incorporating water features will bring you years of peace and enjoyment in your outdoor living spaces!

Lynn went on to say that indoor pools are more favorable to our climate in Calgary, although this summer almost everyone could have enjoyed an outdoor pool! She also mentioned that the maintenance on an indoor pool is considerably less as you do not have the outdoor element such as bugs, leaves and dirt to contend with. Speaking of maintenance, Lynn says they have robotic cleaners so that you do not require the pump and filter system for the pool. She also pointed out that hot tubs can be incorporated in with the pool system as overflow spas with indoor pools. Lynn has great ideas for creating an oasis like setting for your indoor pool area or room. Whether you are buying a new luxury home or

renovating your current home, one of the fi rst features you should consider is fl ooring, according to one local fl ooring expert.

“Flooring sets the tone for the home and re ects your style,” says Guy Fawcett, manger and owner of Distinctive Floors. “In luxury homes, people are using ooring to make a statement, to create a wow factor, and they want a high-end quality product.”

One of the biggest ooring trends in high-end homes is reclaimed hardwood, or the reclaimed hardwood look, he says.

“And within that trend is the movement toward wider planks. People like them because they feel it really makes an impression.”

However, he says, if you want the wider plank you should go with an engineered hardwood because of the drier weather conditions in Southern Alberta that causes shrinkage.

“If you want a solid hardwood it’s best to go with a narrower board, but if you want the wider plank I recommend the engineered hardwood. We carry three or four different lines that are pre nished oiled ooring, and give varying degrees of reclaimed wood appearance.”

One of bene ts to this product is that when it gets scuffed or dinged, you can rub it with a Scotch Brite pad then use a little stain oil that comes in a repair kit with the ooring. Give it a rub and you will not be able to see where it was, Fawcett explains. “So it’s easily repairable, and when you maintain it, the ooring will get a bit of a patina and will look even better with age.”

This pre nished oiled ooring is on the leading edge of newer products and becoming very much in vogue in higher end homes, he says. “Luxury homeowners are going with this type of ooring because it looks great, has longer planks and we’re putting it in a variety of homes from very contemporary-urban modern homes, to elegant traditional homes and more casual homes – it can work well in all of them.”

Natural stone tiles are also popular in luxury homes, with larger scale tile being the fashion. The 12 by 24-inch format is the number one seller, Fawcett says. “We’re also seeing more interest in new porcelain tiles that give the look of natural stone, such as travertine, limestone and vein-cut marble. They can be more budget friendly and maintenance-free, which appeals to everyone.”

He notes that with people who choose darker hardwood floors, the tendency in tile is to go lighter to bring in some contrast. They’re using it in bathrooms, laundry rooms, foyers and mud rooms.

“We’re seeing people go with a high end tile of natural stone at the front entry and doing a gorgeous inlay, intricate design or mosaic to really make a statement,” he adds.

Luxury homeowners who are bucking the return of wallpaper trend are choosing to create a feature wall out of tile. “They’re using new tiles that provide a lot of texture and patterns and

they’re creating a showpiece,” Fawcett says. “They’re also turning away from the typical hearth and mantle on the fireplace and instead using tile from floor-to-ceiling, adding texture and design. This is also true of bathrooms – either doing entire walls or as a type of wainscoting finishing with a pencil rail to match.”

With more hard surfaces, area rugs are now in demand more than ever, with buyers choosing everything from shags and traditional styles to transitional and contemporary/modern designs.

“The open floor plans and larger rooms in today’s homes bring larger area rugs into play and we’ve seen a growing interest in rugs that are eight by 11 feet and larger, plus we can do custom rugs of any size,” Fawcett comments. “What’s nice about area rugs is they provide an anchor for a room and define the space, plus they add comfort and help with acoustics.”

Area rugs come in a variety of styles and fabrics to suit buyers’ tastes. They range from adding subtle tones to spicing up a room with vibrant colours as well as texture and pattern.

“A newer fibre in area rugs is bamboo, and they’re offering an antique look with a little fading of the colours and edge, which is very appealing,” Fawcett says. “They have a soft silk feel and offer excellent durability. They are a popular choice for those seeking a vintage or more classic look with somewhat of a contemporary feel.”

ULTIMATE RENOVATIONS Renovate before you move in... It makes sense

You have just purchased your dream home. Well, it’s nearly perfect … the fl ooring isn’t what you would choose, the kitchen isn’t large enough for your family’s needs and the bathrooms are really dated.

by MICHELLE HOPKINS

John McCoy, general manager at Ultimate Renovations, has seen a marked increase over the

past few years of purchasers planning to renovate immediately upon buying a home rather than

moving in and having to move out again a few months later.

“A renovation prior to move in saves time, money and stress,” says McCoy.

Ultimate Renovations will even meet a prospective buyer at the home prior to them putting

in an offer. The advantage is that a renovation consultant will have some insight into what the

restoration would entail, whether or not specifi c renovations are feasible, and provide some idea

of costs and a timeline to complete the project.

The seasoned veteran also advises homew buyers to start off by window shopping for materials

so they know before the project starts what they want.

“When deciding to renovate, it is critical that you have a plan rather than making it up as you

go along,” he says. “The more prepared you are the more seamless and less stressful the renovation

will be.”

In order to fi nance the gap between the purchase of a new property and closing on an existing

home, buyers are also turning to bridge fi nancing. Most fi nancial institutions offer bridge fi nancing

and it’s less expensive than home owners might realize.

“When a purchaser knows they can fi nancially bridge, it is wise for them to have the work

done before they move in so they can avoid the hassle of living in the home during the renovations,”

says McCoy.

To make life even easier for those who must be out of their existing home before the renovations

on their new home are completed, Ultimate Renovations is one of the few companies who offer

“homes to live in”. There’s no long rental contract to sign; something not generally offered by most

landlords.

“We have a number of homes that we provide to our customers at very competitive rental rates.

That way, our customers don’t have to worry about fi nding a home for a short period of time,”

says McCoy, adding landlords typically don’t rent to anyone for less than a year.

With more than 35 years in the industry and

5,000+ renovations, the eight-time winner of the

Canadian Home Builders Association’s Renovator

of the Year Award has set the standard for excellence

in renovations in Calgary.

The goal for this premier full service home

renovator is to make the process as stress free as

possible. Ultimate Renovations’ project managers

are there at every stage of the process, so should

there ever be a concern or a change, they can be

reached anytime - 24/7.

Western Canada’s weather

A garage floor, a driveway or anywhere where you have a porous concrete surface, is subject to every kind of abuse – impact, abrasion, harsh anti-icing salts and a multitude of weather conditions. When it comes to choosing a coating that can withstand heavy traffic or Calgary’s winter conditions and freeze thaw cycles, which one is best?

Duratech Coatings owner Kyle Caravan says a good quality protective polymer based

coating is the best long term investment in the care and finish of your concrete.

Since concrete floors are porous they are prone to deterioration and wear. That can lead

to premature damage, such as spalling or flaking. Since 2005, local builders, renovators and

home owners have trusted the Calgary-based company for its high quality products, exceptional

service, state-of-the-art surface prep systems, as well as its team of certified professionals.

“There are dozens of different resins to choose from, but we only sell top of the line

products that meet or exceed what is needed for Calgary’s climate,” says Caravan, adding its

products come with a full warranty.

Because Duratech is not a franchise, Caravan can source out the finest products for

superior functionality from the best manufacturers in North America.

“We base our material selection on quality and durability first, cost efficiency second and

eco friendliness third,” he adds.

Having said that, all of Duratech’s products are environmentally-friendly – they contain

no solvents, no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and are virtually odorless.

Another critical factor to the longevity of your floor is the thickness in which the resins

are applied. At Duratech, they apply a liberal amount of materials, in some cases as much as

double the thickness of the competition.

In addition to its superior products and its coverage, what separates Duratech from its

competitors are its second to none surface preparation systems. Duratech utilizes a variety

of preparation techniques including shot blasting, scarifying, and diamond grinding. All of

its prep systems include HEPA dust extractors

that capture 99 per cent of the dust.

To keep up with the increasing demand,

Duratech now trains and certifies a number of

independent contractors throughout Western

Canada.

“Our customers can choose from a roster of

contractors that have been personally trained by

us,” he says. “This helps us to service everyone

in a timely manner. We have experienced a lot of

growth in the last few years … we have contractors

and customers stretching from Victoria to

Regina.”

Duratech Coatings also has a division for

commercial and industrial facilities, restaurants,

parkades, balconies and more. The company is

now Western Canada’s authorized distributor for

the product line it carries. From prep equipment,

training, and every tool needed to do the job right,

Duratech is a one-stop shop for all of your concrete

coating needs.

Specializing in all resin based coating systems,

from basic epoxy to decorative stone overlays;

Duratech has a solution for every application.
