Aachen-based tuning specialist AC Schnitzer gives the

new dynamic BMW extra wings with its extensive range

of special accessories. Thanks to the AC Schnitzer per-

formance upgrade on the 530d, the driver behind the

wheel can enjoy 286 HP instead of the standard 245

HP. Optimizations for the BMW 520d, 525d and 535d

are also in development. Whatever the model, all 5-se-

ries can be improved with the AC Schnitzer engine styl-

ing with capacity logo.

Acoustically, the AC Schnitzer versions of the BMW

550i, 535i, 535d and 530d are enhanced with the

twin sports rear silencer with its chromed “Sports

Trim“ tailpipe trims in left/right combination (in

development). This not only provides the sonorous,

sporting sound but also brings an improved response

behaviour from the engine. For the purely aesthetic

enhancement of the exhaust system on the 525d and

530d models, a chromed “Racing“ tailpipe trim is

also available.

The “most beautiful form” of dynamic driving behaviour is provided by

the AC Schnitzer spring kit, which not only lowers the vehicle by 25 mil-

limetres but also gives the entire suspension set-up a more sporting tone,

without neglecting the comfort requirements of the passengers.

There’s no escaping it - even the most dynamic drive must be slowed down

at some point. In this case, the AC Schnitzer 8-piston high performance

brake system mercilessly grips the front axle. The 8-pot fixed calliper (left/

right) and the perforated, internally vented brake discs provide greatly

improved deceleration and even safer stopping for the vehicle - and of

course the wheels, available from AC Schnitzer in various designs and

with different wheel and tyre combinations.

The five-series by AC Schnitzer stands either on 19 or 20-inch Type IV

wheels in BiColor or silver. Another alternative in 19 inch is the Type VIII

rim, which is also available for the 5-series BMW. The highlight of the

wheel range for the new 5-series (F10) is the Forged Alloy Type V rim,

which allows sizes of 9.0J and 10.0J x 20 inch with tyres 245/35 R20 on

the front and 285/30 R 20 on the rear, and at the same time achieves a

clear weight advantage.

BMW drivers place great visual importance on sporting, refined styling. In development

of the aerodynamic kit, the AC Schnitzer designers and engineers have picked up the

contours of the new 5-series saloon and subtly emphasised this. The result is a tailor-made

outfit which further enhances the striking looks of the BMW 5-series.

At first glance, the new front spoiler catches the eye. This, in conjunction with the chromed

grille, ensures a far more dynamic appearance. And of course the saloon not only has a

smart front, but also a neat rear: the AC Schnitzer rear skirt insert integrates the sports exhaust

harmoniously, and together with the rear roof spoiler and rear spoiler, makes the entire rear

end substantially “more powerful”. Visually, the AC Schnitzer side skirt elements with chromed

design elements (available as an option) link the front and rear parts of the vehicle.

That perfect feeling while driving comes also from the AC Schnitzer interior enhancements

such as the AC Schnitzer “Evo” sports airbag steering wheel with optional AC Schnitzer

carbon steering wheel insert in black “Exclusiv“. The carbon interior trim and the carbon

sill trim set in black “Exclusiv“ ensure just the right distinction from the standard look. The

AC Schnitzer interior range also includes the aluminium cover for the i-Drive System Con-

troller, aluminium foot rests and pedals set, and gear knobs in leather, aluminium (black

Just like its “brother”, the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, the light weight of the Spyder Performante is due in large

part to exterior and interior components made from carbon-fiber. These carbon-composite materials are perfectly suited

to super sports cars because they combine reduced weight with improved technical characteristics. Performance is op-

timized as a result of lower weight, while CO2 emissions are reduced. Lamborghini has been leading the industry for

The Porsche alphabet reserves the letter R for very special sports cars: R for re-

sponsive and refined – but most especially for racy. The new Cayman R com-

bines all these attributes without compromise. 55 kilograms (121 lb) lighter

and with ten horsepower more than the Cayman S, the new mid-engine

coupé from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is designed for spectacular

road behaviour. With its specially adapted sports chassis, it provides an even

more precise driving experience than the Cayman S. The Cayman R makes its

world debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new mid-engine coupé is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine de-

veloping 330 hp (243 kW). In the standard configuration it transmits its power to the

rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h

(62 mph) in 5.0 seconds. Or there is the option of the seven-speed Porsche Doppelk-

upplungsgetriebe (PDK) that reduces its acceleration time to 4.9 seconds. For even

more impressive sprinting performance, the Cayman R can be supplied with one of the

optional Sport Chrono packages, taking it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds. The

new mid-engine coupé is capable of a top speed of 282 km/h (175 mph) with manual

gearbox, or 280 km/h (174 mph) with PDK. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 9.7 l/100

km (29.12 mpg imp.) with six-speed gearbox and 9.3 l/100 km (30.37 mpg imp.) with

PDK. The main aim during the design of the Cayman R was to improve the two-seater

even further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through consistent weight

reduction. With a DIN unladen weight of just 1,295 kilograms (2855 lb) the Porsche

engineers were able to reduce the power-to-weight ratio of the coupé with standard

manual gearbox to 3.9 kilograms (8.6 lb) per horsepower, with the PDK version weigh-

ing 4.0 kilograms (8.8 lb) per horsepower. The largest savings were achieved through

the use of lightweight components and doing without convenience equipment. As for

the 911 GT3/GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder, an optional lithium-ion lightweight construc-

tion battery is also available. In addition, the top model in the mid-engine coupé is

equipped with the lightest 19 inch wheels the entire Porsche range can offer. The com-

plete rim set weighs less than 40 kilograms.

The Cayman R’s purpose and purist character can be seen at

first glance. The extended silhouette of the bodywork, which has

been lowered by 20 millimetres (0.79 in) compared to the Cay-

man S, combined with the distinctive fixed rear spoiler, the high-

quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting highlights

on both the interior and exterior, ensures an individual appear-

ance. The black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors and the

“PORSCHE” lettering on the side – in contrasting black or silver,

depending on the body colour – take design cues from classic

Porsche racing cars.

Precisely this lettering was the trademark of the first Porsche with

the “R” designation, the 911 R of 1967. It was created for racing

sport use in a small series of 19 cars. The “R” was a prototype

based on the standard coupé with a 210 horsepower Carrera 6

engine and, thanks to its many plastic components and extremely

sparse equipment, weighed only 830 kilograms (1830 lb).

The new Porsche Cayman R will go on sale from February 2011.

The price in Germany will be EUR 69,830 inclusive of 19 percent

VAT and country-specific equipment items. •

Exciting design, ultimate performance and groundbreaking efficiency: this is what the new Mercedes-Benz CLS 63

AMG is all about. The top-of-the-range version of the four-door coupé is equipped with the newly developed AMG

V8 biturbo engine, featuring a peak output of up to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm of torque, as well as the AMG

SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. On top of this, the vehicle’s fuel consumption of 9.9 litres per 100

km (NEDC) represents an improvement of 32 percent compared with the previous model (all figures provisional).

Despite a significant performance increase compared with the previous model,

which had a naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine producing 378 kW (514

hp) and 630 Nm of torque, the new CLS 63 AMG is some 4.6 litres, or 32 percent,

more economical – which represents a quantum leap forward. The NEDC fuel con-

sumption of 9.9 litres per 100 km equates to a CO2 output of 232 g/km. Thanks to

these figures, the new V8 Coupé from AMG not only undercuts all of its direct com-

petitors in the small but refined four-door high-performance coupé segment, but is

also more fuel efficient than significantly lower-powered vehicles. Both performance

variants have identical fuel consumption and CO2 figures.

The combination of an AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically

controlled damping system and new front axle, newly developed electromechanical

AMG sports parameter steering, and also optional AMG ceramic high-performance

composite braking system, is synonymous with maximum driving dynamics. Visually,

the CLS 63 AMG impresses with its athletic appearance and distinctive exterior and

interior design. The model’s standard specification also includes innovative LED

High Performance headlamps.

Like the S 63 AMG and CL 63 AMG, drivers of the CLS 63 AMG will benefit from

an eight-cylinder powerhouse, designated internally as the M 157: the new AMG

5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine boasts a combination of innovative high-tech compo -

nents which, in addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors,

also include a full aluminium crankcase, four-valve technology with camshaft adjust-

ment, air/water intercooling, generator management and stop/start system. With a

displacement of 5461 cc, the eight-cylinder engine develops a peak output of 386

kW (525 hp) and torque of 700 Nm. In conjunction with the AMG Performance

package, these figures increase to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm. Both variants

of the CLS 63 AMG achieve exceptional performance: acceleration from zero to

100 km/h takes 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively, and the top speed is 250 km/h

(electronically limited).

The major difference between both power units is the increase in the maximum charge-air pressure from 1.0 to

1.3 bar. In addition, the CLS 63 AMG with the AMGPerformance package features a special high-quality carbon

fibre engine cover. •
