There is a real problem permeat-ing small towns and big cities alikethroughout the U.S. and that is theavailability of synthetic drugs known asSpice, K2 and Bath Salts. These prod-ucts are sold in local markets through-out the U.S. including gas stations, liquor stores, convenient stores, smokeshops, or on the internet. Bath Saltsare a central nervous system stimulantthat can cause episodes of extreme psy-chosis and is sold under names like“Purple Wave,” “Zoom,” and “CloudNine,” to name a few.

Law enforcement officers andgovernment officials alike are gravelyconcerned, and have stepped up ef-forts to stop the sale of these products.Recently the House and Senate agreedon legislation to control 26 syntheticdrugs under the Controlled Sub-stances Act.

In Pasco County, some folks havehad enough and are protesting andcalling for the boycotting of stores thatsell synthetic drugs. Erik and ColleenSuojanen have started an email list tonotify people of offending stores and

organize protests with signs that read“This Store Sells Poison to Kids” and“Please Boycott This Store.” Throughemail, if you choose, you can be noti-fied of offending stores that sell syn-thetic drugs (sometimes under codename) and where the protests will beheld. Organizers are asking that atleast one responsible adult male bepresent at each protest location. Partic-ipants are asked not to park in thestore’s parking lot, not to block anyentrances, and absolutely not to con-front or engage in confrontations withstore owners, employees or customers. This group is trying to, peaceably andlegally, make a difference by hurtingthese stores’ bottom lines.

“Please consider having your fam-ily join our family in the fight againstthe substance known as Spice,” saysErik Suojanen. “Spice is synthetic mar-ijuana that is sold to teens in manymom and pop beverage/gas stores aswell as several BP gas stations. It’s achemically laced substance sold as in-cense in little cartoon Kool-Aid typepackages with names like “Mary JoyDead” and “Berry ’d.” This substanceis 30 to 50 times more potent than

marijuana, is very addictive, is killingkids, AND IT’S LEGAL! The storesthat sell this stuff know exactly whatit’s being used for and they DO NOTCARE. If you would like to help ridour community of this poison, pleasee-mail me at [email protected] I will add your name to our up-dates list. The child you save may beyour own.”

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Noccohas come up with a way to make it easyfor residents to identify the morally re-sponsible stores that do not carry syn-thetic drugs. On June 22nd, he unveileda new sticker program with stickers thatread in part, "Synthetic Drugs Kill -These Drugs Are NOT Sold Here." Toreceive a sticker, store owners or man-agers must sign a letter of agreementprovided by the Sheriff's Office statingthat they will not sell the items.

Perhaps if this idea – of boy-cotting and “outing” stores guilty ofselling synthetic drugs – is kindled insmall towns across the states, it will fireup and spread across the U.S. Thenthe power of the American consumerwill overcome the greed of some un-scrupulous merchants.

I really enjoy going out to eat butsometimes find it hard to find healthyoptions at restaurants. That is why I wasso happy to discover Bangkok Sushi lo-cated in the Northpointe Village onState Road 54. With its combination ofdelicious, flavorful Thai food and freshexpertly prepared sushi, Bangkok Sushioffers a huge variety of food that tastesgreat and is good for you too – theperfect combination!

The food at Bangkok Sushiis delicious and everything is

made fresh to order. The friendly waitstaff is very helpful and the inviting din-ing room is decorated with beautiful ex-otic statues, woodcarvings, wallhangings and ornamental pieces – manybrought over from Thailand. BangkokSushi has been open since July 2009and owner John Chieopanich says hesees many return customers and enjoysgetting to know them.

Thai cuisine is oneof the healthiest

foods you caneat. In fact,

several Thai

dishes, such as Tom Yum Soup, havebeen studied for their incredible healthbenefits. Many of the fresh herbs andspices used in Thai cooking - such asturmeric, galangal, coriander, lemon-grass, and fresh chilies - have immune-boosting and disease-fighting power.

If you’ve never tried Thai food youare in for a culinary treat, and if youhave had it before, you will find this tobe some of the best authentic Thai foodyou’ve ever eaten.

You can choose from one of thescrumptious Chef’s Specials like CrispyDuck, Volcano Chicken, SalmonPanang or Volcano Lobster. If you likecurries, they make delicious ones atBangkok Sushiincluding red, green and yel-

low curries, Massamuncurry and my favorite –Panang Curry. Theyhave noodle dishes in-cluding Pad Thai – thepopular Thai noodledish of stir-fried ricenoodles with egg, scal-lions, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts andtamarind sauce. AtBangkok Sushi they usevery little oil when stir-frying or sautéing themeats and vegetables in

their dishes, in fact many of the vegeta-bles are steamed.

Bangkok Sushi has a section ofvegetarian dishes on the menu, plus al-most every dish can be made vegetarian. On the night we went, I had the Tor-nado Tofu and my husband had theYellow Curry with Chicken. Both disheswere a delectable blend of flavors. Youcan designate how spicy you want yourfood from one star – coward,- to fourstars – Native Thai.

In addition to the more than 40entrees for you to choose from,Bangkok Sushi offers many appetizerslike egg rolls, spring rolls, dumplingsand satay, traditional Thai salads and

So Delicious!So Good For You!

heavenly soups. We had the wonderfulTom Yum soup – hot and sour soupwith straw mushrooms, lemon grass, galangal roots, kaffir lime leaves, tomatoand lime juice and the delicious TomKha soup – coconut milk soup withstraw mushrooms and lime juice.

One of the reasons Thai food is sotasteful is the herbs and spices used dur-ing the cooking process. A great Thaichef knows the timing of when to addfood and spices so that everything iscooked to perfection and the flavorsblend together. Becoming experiencedat Thai cooking can take many yearsand most of the chefs at Bangkok Sushibegan learning the intricacies of Thaifood when they were growing up inThailand.

Sushi is another great tasting andhealthy option when you are eating out.

In general, fish provides a lean source oflow-calorie, high quality protein. It’salso low in saturated fats and choles-terol, making it a heart-healthy foodchoice. Salmon is especially high inomega-3 fatty acids, which are linked toimproved cholesterol levels, loweredblood pressure and decreased risk of ab-normal heart rhythms. Tuna also hasomega oomph.

The thin sheets of seaweed, ornori, which are flattened, cut andwrapped around maki and hand rolls, contain mighty minerals. Iodine, essen-tial for proper hormone function, isabundant in this dried sea vegetable. You’ll also get the benefits of magne-sium, calcium, iron and folic acid fromeating rolls wrapped in nori.

The head sushi chef at BangkokSushi trained for many years at a five

star hotel in Thailand. He orders thefreshest fish available and expertly turnsit into edible, mouthwatering works ofart. John says most of the customerswho come to Bangkok Sushi order bothsushi and Thai food. You can start yourmeal off with one of their many spe-cialty rolls like the sunny tuna or thethree sum. If you want to make sushiyour dinner, you can choose from oneof Bangkok Sushi’s Sushi or Sashimidinners or you can pick and choose therolls you want from their extensive list. The sushi we had was fabulous. We es-pecially enjoyed the kanisu roll – krab, avocado and masago wrapped in paper-thin cucumber slices in a rice vinegar

sauce. Several of the customers I talkedto who were eating sushi said it was thebest sushi they had ever had.

If you’re in the mood for a deli-cious, healthy meal, Bangkok Sushi isthe place to go.

Bangkok Sushi is located at16541 Pointe Village Dr., #101 inthe Northpointe Village off of StateRoad 54. The restaurant is open forlunch: Mon.–Fri., 11:30 a.m.–3p.m., and for dinner: Mon.–Fri., 3–10 p.m., 4–10 p.m. on Sat., and 4– 9p.m. on Sun. Suncoast Urgent Care, located atTrinity Village Center, is proud to becelebrating its 5th Anniversary thismonth. Peter C. Duic, MD, and JohnP. Opyoke, MD, drew upon their ex-tensive experience as emergency roomdoctors when they opened the urgentcare facility, originally named TrinityUrgent Care, on July 16, 2007. Drs.Opyoke and Duic decided to changethe name of their practice in order tohave more uniformity when theyopened a second location in July 2009on Mariner Boulevard in Spring Hill. Both facilities are open seven days aweek, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mon-day through Saturday, and 10 a.m.until 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic are bothresidency-trained in emergency medi-cine and both doctors are Board Certi-fied by the American Board ofEmergency Medicine; important be-cause they are both specifically trainedto handle all kinds of emergencies.

“We opened as ER doctors, seeinghow much could be cared for here,”says Dr. Duic. “We’ve become an inte-

gral part of the community and have awonderful group of people. It’s really apleasure to be able to care for patientshere.”

At far less cost to the patient thana visit to the hospital ER, the doctors atSuncoast Urgent Care treat everythingfrom common colds to broken bones. The doctors designed the facility withthe technology to care for urgentneeds, and additionally, they made itcomfortable and pleasant for patientsand families – a place where they wouldwant their own children treated.

Suncoast Urgent Care is notmeant for life-threatening emergencies.Rather, it provides quality medical carein a state-of-the-art facility for patientswho are sick or injured but who do notrequire emergency room measures.

Onsite digital x-ray, EKG, lab test-ing, IV fluids and medications from theonsite pharmacy make it even moreconvenient for patients and cuttingdown on travel, time, and cost. You canget immediate results for strep, mononucleosis, urinalysis and more. Amajor procedure room is set up to han-dle splinting, suturing and casting. Thecompetent and caring medical team in-

cludes physicians, nurse practitioners,RNs, medical assistants and x-ray tech-nicians. Suncoast Urgent Care has affili-ations with off-site radiology providersthat can provide more advanced imag-ing such as CAT scans and MRIs, onthe same day, if necessary, and get thereport studies back on the same day.

Dr. Duic and Dr. Opyoke knowthe best specialists in the area and manytimes can set the appointment immedi-ately when they see that a patient needsto see a specialist. “We provide a lot offollow-up with patients in the nearbyneighboring communities,” says Dr.Duic. “We make sure the loop is closedand we don’t just refer patients blindly.

We will help facilitate a prompt follow-up. A lot of businesses in the area sendtheir employees to us so we are takingcare of them as well.”

For the convenience of local busi-nesses, Suncoast Urgent Care providesOccupational Medicine, such as drugtesting and Department of Transporta-tion physicals, as well as treating work-related injuries for local retail, service, industrial and corporate businesses.

News’ 2011 Best of Suncoast contestand Suncoast Urgent Care was the2011 Silver Winner in The SuncoastNews’ Best of Suncoast contest; bothare favorites in the running for thisyear’s contest for which winnershaven’t been chosen yet.

Perhaps the best source to listen toabout the quality of care at SuncoastUrgent Care comes from its patients.Even though my family has a greatfamily physician, we have turned to theconvenience and quality medical care atSuncoast Urgent Care several timesover the past five years – the most re-cent being a quick, inexpensive, yetthorough school sports physical.

Hear what patients have writtenon comment cards:

Stay Cool This SummerWith

The dog days of summer are hereand for those of you who know Florida, know the heat isn’t going to let up any-time soon. But, as long as you can es-cape into a nice cool house, you canhandle the heat. The trained profes-sional technicians at Air Rescue are hereto help – whether you are in need of anew air conditioning system or justneed some repairs and fine-tuningmade to an already existing unit.

In business since 1946, Air Rescueprovides full-service air conditioningservices, heating repair and installation.

They have

technicians on-call 24-hours a day, 7days a week and can service all brands.

Air Conditioning units have towork extra hard in the Florida heat andAir Rescue wants to make sure yourA/C runs smoothly and coolly all sum-mer long. Air Rescue’s Total SystemRejuvenation guarantees that yourA/C system won’t breakdown and cansave you as much as $150 on your elec-trical bill. During the Total System Re-juvenation, a certified technician takesthe A/C apart, cleans and lubricates allthe parts, adds Freon to the system andmakes sure everything is done to ex-tend the life of your system, keeping

your A/Cin tip-

top

shape. If you have problems with allergies

or asthma, the indoor air quality spe-cialists from Air Rescue will give you acomplimentary system evaluation. Ac-cording to Scott Scarboro, MarketingDirector for Air Rescue, there havebeen important changes and improve-ments made to ductwork over theyears. “Older ducts were textured, which allowed dust and allergens to gettrapped and build up inside, contribut-ing to allergy and breathing problems,”states Scott. “Newer ducts aresmoother with no place for biologicalmatter to get trapped and can help re-duce allergens.”

Sometimes oldductwork can also pre-

vent your home from getting all thecool air your A/C unit is blowing out.If your system is capable of blowing outmore air than can get through yourductwork, your system will work harderwhich could cause problems down theline. You are also paying for cold airthat you aren’t getting. The profession-als at Air Rescue will measure airflowand temperatures at both ends of yoursystem to make sure everything is com-patible, ensuring that your system isrunning efficiently and that you aren’tpaying for something you’re not get-ting.

A/C units have become muchmore efficient over the past six years. If

your system is more than eight yearsold, a new unit could save you enoughmoney on your electric bill to end uppaying for its self in the years to come. The A/C experts at Air Rescue will alsoanalyze your home and energy needsand will find the system that will workbest for you and your family.

“I had a complete system installedin my home by Air Rescue. They werevery professional, and I’m very happywith what they have done for me,”states customer Wade.

If you do find yourself with anA/C unit that has completely brokendown and needs to be replaced, AirRescue will do their best to install anew A/C unit the same day or at thelatest by the next day, ensuring youwon’t have to sweat it out for too long.

Air Conditioning is an essential ne-cessity in Florida and Air Rescue en-courages you to make sure your systemis running as efficiently as possible soyou don’t end up having to spend extramoney on your electric bill – helpingyou to avoid issues that could havebeen prevented. Some signs to look forthat may signify an A/C problem arevents that are sweating or have conden-sation on them or an air handler thatfreezes up or won’t turn on. If yourelectric bills have increased from whatthey were last year, this could also be asign that your A/C is not working like

it should. If you are having any of these

problems or just want to make sureyour A/C is operating at maximum ca-pacity and efficiency for the summer, give Air Rescue a call and let their expe-rienced technicians analyze your sys-tem. In addition to NAT certification, all the technicians at Air Rescue gothrough extensive in-house trainingand regular continuing educationcourses to make sure they are up-to-date and knowledgeable about the lat-est A/C repairs and technologies.

Axel hadYvonne’s Famous Cuban Sandwichwhich is made with fresh baked au-thentic Cuban bread from the La Se-gunda Bakery in Ybor City, and Iloved the New York Chicken Spiedieson a Hoagie. For the past four years The DogHouse, a full-service doggy daycare lo-cated on Tarpon Springs Road inOdessa, has been providing the com-munity with something truly unique—ahome-away-from-home where yourdog will enjoy supervised play withother friendly dogs and the freedom toventure around, just like at home.Boasting 11 extremely spacious cage-free suites, over an acre and a half ofbeautiful fenced-in yard, and a highlytrained staff of caring individuals whowill give your dog the attention he/shedeserves, The Dog House offers plentyof room for your dog to roam and playin a friendly environment that your dogwill love. For centuries dogs have beenthought of as ‘man’s best friend,’ andat The Dog House, that is exactly howyour dog will be treated!

Your dog is in good hands at TheDog House, as both owners, Jamie Oc-cHionero and Sony Zorek, have manyyears of experience working with dogsof all breeds, and treat every dog asthey do their own – with love! My hus-band and I have been bringing our twodogs, Marley and Ziggy, to The DogHouse for the past three years andwould never consider taking them any-where else – they love it that much! Assoon as we pull up, Marley and Ziggygo crazy with excitement and can’t waitto run inside. For them, it truly is ahome-away-from-home, where theycan socialize and hang-out with all theirdoggy friends.

Based on real customer spendingbehavior, The Dog House Boardingwas recently rated 86/100, making it#1 ranked for Pets in the Odessa Area –even more proof of how great TheDog House really is!

The Dog House welcomes all

dogs, of all shapes, sizes and breeds andthe best part is, there is no need toworry about fights – before your dog isput with a pack he/she is carefullystudied to determine which pack willmatch your dog’s personality best. Anydogs exhibiting aggressive qualities willnot be put with other dogs. This hasproved to be extremely successful formaintaining friendliness amongst all thedogs. Additionally, Jamie has spent nu-merous hours socializing dogs to teachthem how to gain and maintain positiverelationships with other dogs. Even ag-gressive dogs are trained to be calm andfriendly with other dogs!

Here, dogs are treated more likeguests at a resort. They are continu-ously rotated in and out of the spaciousfenced yard, limiting the time spent in-side and during summer, the dogs arerotated out of the hot Florida sun in 15to 20 minute intervals to prevent over-heating. Mist machines also are used toprovide the dogs with a refreshing cooldown.

Over the past year, Sony and Jamiehave made some great renovations, in-cluding the addition of new water sta-tions and a new Splash Station waterpond, which comes fully equipped witha water fountain and was specifically de-signed by Jamie to contour to theshape of a dog, making it comfortableand safe. They have also revamped theirlandscaping, adding more trees andbushes to provide shade on those hotsummer days.

At the Dog House your dog’ssafety is their main concern, which iswhy they have replaced their chain-linkfences with six-foot aluminum barfences. These taller fences provideadded security and prevent dogs thatlike to jump from getting over thefence. Some dogs, believe it or not, areactually able to climb the regular chain-

link fences –well not any-more!

The DogHouse iscage-free op-tional so yourdog will behoused cage-free if youprefer. Thecage-free op-tion allowsdogs (unlessthey are ag-gressive withother dogs)to be kept inopen roomswhere, despitenot being outside, the dogs can stillroam as they please. This allows for aunique unforgettable experience forevery dog. Of course, kennels are avail-able as many dogs are crate-trained andprefer to nap and rest in their crate. The Dog House not only provides ahealthy environment for your dog, butit’s also entertaining, interactive andfun!

Training Through Play On top of the already amazing

training programs offered at The DogHouse also offers an accelerated 30-daytraining package to further enhanceyour dog’s socialization skills and obe-dience. Training Through Play, asJamie calls it, is designed to go evenmore in depth than basic training andconsists of repetition-based activities, teaching your dogs very importantskills, while still allowing them to havefun. Using similar tactics that somemight use at home, Jamie integratesthese with her expert training and givesyou amazing results within a short

amount of time. This program is agreat way to improve the relationshipbetween you and your dog and withinno time you will see an increase in thestrength of the bond that you twoshare, as proven by the many successstories this program has produced.Costing only $500 (this includes alldaycare costs for the month); thismonth-long program will greatly en-hance your dog’s capabilities, helpingyour furry pal reach his/her full poten-tial. If you enroll in this program, allthey ask is that you bring your dog fora minimum of three days a week onMonday through Thursday.

Also offered at The Dog Houseare classes for manners, obedience andbasic training. Jamie and Sony canteach your dog(s) very useful tech-niques and abilities that will benefit thewhole family. The courses last eightweeks and are well worth the time andmoney! If your dog needs agility orsearch-and-rescue training, Sony andJamie can refer you to a reputable andqualified trainer.

Having a good pediatrician foryour child is one of the most importantdecisions that a parent can make, andmany questions can arise. Are theyBoard Certified? Are they knowledge-able? Do they listen and spend qualitytime? Are the doctors accessible? Can Iget a quick appointment? Will my childlike going to them? The answer to all ofthese questions is a resounding yes atNorth Pinellas Children’s Medical Cen-ter.

If you have lived in our area forany stretch of time, and have children, chances are you are already familiarwith North Pinellas Children’s MedicalCenter. The practice began in 1992when a few very well respected doctorsin the area decided to combine theirpractices into one. Drs. Thomas Hen-nessy, Dean Fauber, “Dino” Pantagesand James Dwyer opened a practice inPalm Harbor, and before longNPCMC became so popular that theythought about expanding. Named for

its primary location in Palm Harbor,North Pinellas Children’s Medical Cen-ter, or NPCMC for short, now hasthree locations and 16 (entirely) BoardCertified Pediatricians that provide car-ing, high quality pediatric care in Pinel-las, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties.

The Trinity NPCMC, located at10537 S.R. 54 between Duck SloughBlvd. and Longleaf, opened in 2008and is convenient to many surroundingareas including Odessa, Port Richey,Lutz, Land O’Lakes, East Lake andmore. The North Pinellas Children’sMedical Center of Trinity is family fo-cused and extremely children-friendly.Their spacious underwater-themedlobby makes everyone feel at ease whenthey come to see the doctor. Childrenlove to look at the beautiful “FindingNemo” saltwater fish tank, and canenjoy watching their favorite TV showson the wall-mounted televisions whilethey wait. There’s even a separate“well-baby” room for new mommiesand their infants who come in to seetheir doctor for the first time, and forwell visits.

Doctors You Can Count On FromBirth to College

The entire staff at NPCMC is fo-cused on making each visit a good one.A family favorite for providing same-day sick visit appointments, easy check-ins, and short wait times, it’s thedoctors who truly make any medicalpractice.

Families are busier than ever thesedays, so they find that many children

are being seen at quick clinics by otherkinds of medical personnel. Unlikemany practices, pediatric and otherwise, where patients see a physician’s assistantor nurse practitioner, every appoint-ment is with a doctor at NPCMC.Also, same day appointments are avail-able, and they are open seven days aweek! Why see someone else when youcan see your Doctor? Yes, even on Sun-day!

The Pediatricians at the TrinityNPCMC have a combined experienceof over 100 years, and enjoy being ableto consult with one another. There aresix physicians at this location: Alfred Al-varez, M.D., James Dwyer, M.D., Al-pana Grover, M.D., Thomas Hennessy,M.D., Paul Mitchell, M.D. and Char-lene Weber, M.D. Each respected intheir own right, the doctors atNPCMC work together to make surethat their patients and their familiescome first while getting the hands-oncare that they deserve.

At NPCMC all of the medicalrecords are electronic, which makesseeing a different doctor or even seeinga doctor at one of the other NPCMClocations very easy to do. They have a

very informative website, and parentscan even access their children’s ap-pointment information, contact infor-mation or insurance information viatheir Patient Portal, which can be areal time-saver at check-in time (espe-cially with a sick child in tow!).

Now Accepting New Patients!Finding the right pediatrician for

your child at NPCMC is easy. First ofall, they all work together, and whilesome parents feel comfortable seeingwhoever is available at the practice, some like to see their very favorite

one! Either way is fine at NPCMC. “We are a very diverse group of

doctors,” says Dr. Grover. “We havedoctors of different age groups, somethat are Spanish-speaking, and two fe-male and four male doctors at this loca-tion.”

Dr. Alvarez adds, “There’s a doc-tor here for everyone.”

I personally was a patient at thePalm Harbor NPCMC when I was ateenager, and now both of my childrensee doctors at NPCMC. Knowing thatone of the knowledgeable doctors fromthe practice would be there to examinemy babies after they were born was ablessing. I trust all of the doctors in thepractice, and can honestly say that overthe years I have met almost every one.

My children have seen doctors at theirdifferent locations, and I am gratefulthat there is a NPCMC located in Trin-ity. When my children are sick, I cancount on them. I know that I will beable to see a doctor right away, and Iknow that if I call the office with aquestion, that a nurse will call me backshortly.

If you are thinking of having ababy or are pregnant, it’s important toschedule a prenatal consultation. Thoseare easy to do at NPCMC, and know-ing that your infant will have fantasticcare from their very first day is a hugerelief. On staff and with access to New-born Nurseries at The Medical Centerof Trinity; Morton Plant Mease Hospi-tal in Clearwater; Mease CountrysideHospital in Safety Harbor and theFlorida Hospital of North Pinellas (for-merly known as Helen Ellis MemorialHospital); families know that they candepend on these doctors to be therewhen it matters most.

Baby well visits, vaccinations andphysicals are an important part of achild’s life, but often after the age ofsix, doctors don’t see the kids veryoften anymore unless they are sick. Dr.Hennessy says, “We want to stress theimportance of yearly physicals.” Withserious health issues affecting kids thesedays from obesity and type-2 diabetes,

it’s important to have a pediatricianwho knows your child well enough tobe on the lookout for changes.

As I mentioned before, I was a pa-tient at NPCMC when I was ateenager, and my children now comehere. The doctors in this practice trulytake pride in watching their patientsgrow up and have children of theirown. This is a huge testament to thelongevity of doctors at NPCMC. Thedoctors here become part of your fam-ily. Young children, teenagers, and par-ents alike, all enjoy coming to NorthPinellas Children’s Medical Center.

“We want you to have confidencein the care we provide for your child, and we want you to know that we pro-vide good quality care,” says JaniceBanks, NPCMC’s friendly office man-ager. “Your kids are healthy and safe atNPCMC.”
