@LuHigh LuHigh LuerworthHighSchool Julian Kirby Headteacher @HeadLuhigh Friday 12th October 2018 Dear Parents / Carers Welcome to our final edion of our weekly newsleer for this term. It has been a very busy but successful term for our students with a large number of highlights. Already, the Les Miserables cast are busy rehearsing and they sound fantasc! I am delighted to include in this newsleer the details of Acvity Week for 2019. We have re-modelled Acvity Week to include Year 10 students. There are a variety of visits and experiences for Year 10 students, which are directly linked to the courses they are studying. For example, any student who is undertaking GCSE history or who is in Year 9 and intends on taking history next year will learn an incredible amount through the visit to Berlin. A key aspect of the course is the Nazi persecuon of the Jews. As a historian who has visited the Wannsee conference villa and the Sachsenhausen concentraon camp I know this will have a huge impact on the students’ learning in GCSE history as well as being an important life event. We are approaching an important part of the academic year for Year 11 students. Students should be thinking carefully about what they would like to do Post 16. To support students, we will be holding our Post 16 Evening on Thursday 1st November. All of the major educaon providers from Leicestershire will be in aendance as well as our local Universies who will provide guidance on entry to higher educaon. We have also included a list of all of the local providers and their Open Evenings. Please be aware that many instuons have brought forward their deadlines for applicaons to December/January. Dear Parents / Carers

Welcome to our final edition of our weekly newsletter for this term. It has been a very busy but successful term for our students with a large number of highlights. Already, the Les Miserables cast are busy rehearsing and they sound fantastic!

I am delighted to include in this newsletter the details of Activity Week for 2019. We have re-modelled Activity Week to include Year 10 students. There are a variety of visits and experiences for Year 10 students, which are directly linked to the courses they are studying. For example, any student who is undertaking GCSE history or who is in Year 9 and intends on taking history next year will learn an incredible amount through the visit to Berlin. A key aspect of the course is the Nazi persecution of the Jews. As a historian who has visited the Wannsee conference villa and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp I know this will have a huge impact on the students’ learning in GCSE history as well as being an important life event.

We are approaching an important part of the academic year for Year 11 students. Students should be thinking carefully about what they would like to do Post 16. To support students, we will be holding our Post 16 Evening on Thursday 1st November. All of the major education providers from Leicestershire will be in attendance as well as our local Universities who will provide guidance on entry to higher education. We have also included a list of all of the local providers and their Open Evenings. Please be aware that many institutions have brought forward their deadlines for applications to December/January.

Have a lovely half-term.

Kind regards

Mobile phones on Off-site Visits In line with the school’s Mobile Phone Usage Policy, during off-site visits any use of a mobile phone will only be allowed with the knowledge, supervision and permission of a member of staff. This includes using the device to take photographs. In order to ensure that phones are used responsibly, we ask the following: • Students use their phones responsibly while travelling. Mobile phones can be used to listen to music on the

journey.• Headphones are put away when visiting places of interest.• Mobile phones can be used to take photographs when visiting places of interest but should then be put away.• Mobile phones must not be used to make telephone calls when travelling or visiting places of interest.• Students must not place any comment or photograph on social media that would bring the reputation of the

school into disrepute.• Parents/ Carers to telephone staff only if they have an important concern. Staff have the right to confiscate mobile phones being inappropriately used. On residential trips, at the discretion of staff, students may use their phones within the confines of the accommodation.

Activity Week 2019All students have had an Activity Week form and letter, the booklet can be viewed here. The most important thing to do at this stage is to return the form by Wednesday 24th October. If for any reason you haven’t got a form, you may still make your choices and download a form here.

Hot Choc FridayStudent AchievementCongratulations to Daniel Barratt of 11NR whose logo design has been selected to represent the Therapy Recognition Awards at George Eliot Hospital. Following his business lessons on the Japanese quality improvement method Kaizen, Daniel was inspired to create a logo, which reflected the continuous improvement concept of Kaizen and the purpose of these awards, which is to recognise shared decision making and collaborative working practices within the Therapy Unit. The selection of the Japanese Cherry Tree, a nod to Kaizen’s origins, and the choice of colours, which represent the therapy unit, make for the perfect logo for these awards. Well done Daniel!

Book of the Week: Twilight

This time the girls got to choose the book of the week. They went for the first book in the Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer, a vampire story which is fitting with Halloween on the way.

When 17 year old Isabella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father she expects that her new life will be as dull as the town. Here she meets the Cullen family who prefer their own company and will make no exception for Bella. Bella is convinced that Edward Cullen in particular hates her, but she feels a strange attrac-tion to him, although his hostility makes her feel almost physically ill.

He seems determined to push her away - until, that is, he saves her life from an out of control car. Bella will soon discover that there is a very good reason for Edward's coldness. He, and his family, are vampires - and he knows how dangerous it is for others to get too close.

STAFF HOUSESI’m hoping that by now you all know that students here at Lutterworth High are allocated into one of four Houses. But it’s important to know that all staff are allocated into a House too. Staff get opportunities to represent their Houses and we all get much too competitive when it comes to Sports Day!

See below for a list of which staff members are in which Houses:

Millionaires ClubWe have more news on the Millionaires Club. Joanna Hopkins is the third year 7 to join the club. Congratulations Joanna, you’ve won yourself a £10 book voucher.

Now that the club is beginning to expand we can begin our club meetings in earnest. Exciting things to follow!

Student Librarians have been busy this week racking the shelves to find the best spooky books to put on display in the build up to Halloween.

They’ve done a great job and students can read the likes of Daren Shan, Anthony Harrowitz, Robert Westall and Rachel Caine.

They didn’t stop there – they’ve also been working hard putting together the new ‘Comic Corner’ and recommending some of their favourite graphic novels to put on the walls.

Great stuff everyone, everywhere looks lovely!

Ghost Story Lunchtime Join us in the Learning Hub at lunchtime on the 31st October where we’ll be getting cosy around our (imaginary) campfire and telling awesome spooky tales. Be sure to prepare your story over half term. Prize for the best story!

Prepare to be scared…

Sports Highlights

RugbyResults from last weekend against Fairfax were as follows:

Year 7 lost 25-15Year 8 lost 25-0Year 9 won 22-21

The most significant performance of the weekend saw our Year 9’s beat Fairfax by 1 point. They lost to this team last year by 10 points which demonstrates the progress they are making. Jonny Picton was excellent in his role as captain with other big performances from Frank Critchlow and our ‘Man of the Match’ was Andrew Anderson.

Netball SponsorshipMr Howgate, Head of PE, met with the netball sponsors for the Key Stage 4 kit this week. A big thank you to Advance Compliance for their support. We look forward to wearing the kit over the next 4 to 5 years whilst playing our local fixtures as well as when we tour internationally.

NetballYear 9 netball players this week took to the courts at Leicester Grammar School to play in their county championships where they won all of their group games to progress to the quarter finals where they were knocked out by Loughborough Grammar School.

SCIENCE SPECIAL

Claire Burchett @scienceburchett

Very enthusiastic Y11 students today testing the reactions of Ethanoic Acid (a Carboxylic Acid). They tested the pH, observed the gases formed & named the products (magnesium ethanoate, potassium ethanoate) & recalled why acids are different strengths (H+ dissociation)

Lutt High Science @MissN_LHS

7HA were set the challenge of separating three different mixtures, they had to choose the right equipment themselves. Some puzzled faces to start with, as they didn't know what was in each tub, but smiles all around when they succeeded! @LuttHigh

Lutt High Science @MissN_LHS

The y11 Chemists learned all about carboxylic acids this week, by putting them to the test. How do they react with metals and carbonates and which products do they form? These students are investigating whether ethanoic acid conducts electricity! @LuttHigh

Mr Maynard Science @MaynardScience

One very proud student today after looking how to represent additional polymerisation! Great job @LuttHigh
