Lutherhaven Ministries: CAmP HAPPENs HERE:Relationships. Fun. Challenges. Part of most kids’ everyday lives. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad.

Relationships might be unhealthy, broken or stressful. Fun could include too much “screentime” on TV, video games, or smartphones, or even unwholesome choices like bullying, underage drinking, sex, illegal drugs or gangs. Challenges kids tackle: abuse in all its faces, addictions, identity issues, divorce, an array of peer pressures.

BUT!! Send a kid to a week of camp at Lutherhaven Ministries and that trey of words gets flipped!

Relationships Happen Here – new friendships and adults who care about kids and serve as positive role models. Plus for many kids, a new or growing faith in God means a new relationship with Jesus.

Fun Happens Here – awesome outdoor activities kids just don’t get the chance to experience: horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, hiking, rock climbing…

Challenges Happen Here – team-building activities on the ropes courses, a screaming ride down a zip line, or stepping up in front of a group in a leadership role.

Camp Happens Here! And as it does, kids discover their true worth and potential; gain confidence through positive friendships, new life skills and growing passions; and most of all, deepen their faith in God through the love of Jesus!

Take a moment to enjoy our 2013 Annual Report. Between all the numbers, charts, programs and statistics you’ll plainly see – thanks be to God! – Camp Happens Here!

Your servant in Jesus!

Away from their daily routine, discarding the expectations and pressures of others, campers are freed to truly be themselves and blossom into who God created them to be.

Kids today are under tremendous pressure, like never before. Self-doubt, peer pressure, substance abuse, self-injury and a chorus of harmful voices nag at kids every day. Even ones with strong support structures face challenges.

At camp young people get a breather from the craziness of their regular routine – and catch a vision for the bigger picture of their lives. At camp kids get the mental room to consider some of the most important issues of life, think about their future, evaluate unhealthy patterns, and discover this truth: God loves them and has an amazing plan for their lives.

Kids Need Camp.

I didn’t know that!

… Lutherhaven does camp for a bunch of other youth organizations around the region: Idaho Drug Free Youth and the Idaho Youth Summit; Hospice of North Idaho + Hospice of Spokane for kids who’ve lost a loved one; the North Idaho Catholic Youth Camp; Real Life teens; and all sorts of custom camps for a dozen or more Northwest congregations.

… In 2013 campers came from 283 congregations in 17 states … but our biggest opportunity is telling the 1/3 of our campers who don’t attend church about Jesus’ love!

… Last summer 6 of 10 kids came to a Lutherhaven camp for free or at a reduced rate … around 860 children and youth!

Outdoors happens Here!Camp Lutherhaven and Shoshone Mountain Retreat are set in some

of the most beautiful spots on the continent. Campers explore nature, participate in new adventures and test their limits in a

healthy environment surrounded by the grandeur of God’s creation.

I didn’t know that!Just shy of 1,900 students from 27 public, private, and home school groups came to our sites in 2013 for one, two, and three-day outdoor education programs to learn about our forests and trees, rivers and lakes, fish and wildlife … and grow in life skills, leadership character and reliance on God, faith, and others. www.lutherhaven.com 5

6 Annual Report 2013 Lutherhaven Ministries, Coeur d’Alene, ID

Good Friends...and positive peer pressure can make all the difference in a kid’s life. Friendships with caring adults and other campers—forged through countless shared experiences over the 7,200 minutes of a camp week—can last a lifetime … and are key to helping young people navigate the challenges of life.

I didn’t know that!Maybe the most significant camp friends are “big.” These days kids spend on average less than 4 minutes a week in meaningful conversation with their parents. At camp, caring adults, counselors and mentors come alongside campers and help them think through decisions and experiences in ways that prepare them for their future. Camper after camper point back to that positive role model they met at camp as one who helped shape the direction of their lives.

It takes almost 70 staff each summer to make camp happen for 10 weeks in June, July and August at Camp Lutherhaven, Shoshone Mountain Retreat, Idaho Servant Adventures and nearly 30 week-long Lutherhaven Day Camps in three Northwest states. Another 20 come on board each spring and fall as mentor-naturalists for Outdoor Education.

Give Twice ... Now and Forever!A decade ago Lutherhaven’s Permanent Endowment Fund was just over $600,000. In 2013 the fund hit $1.1 million, thanks to people like you who value our ministry and include some amount—large or small—for Lutherhaven in their will, trust, life insurance or estate bequest. 20% of all bequests go right now to special needs, projects and programs. The other 80% is invested in perpetuity … forever! Each year the ministry may designate 4% of the Endowment Fund for special projects, leaving the rest to grow. For each million in the fund, camp may spend up to $40,000 annually, and still (in most years) the fund grows! Our goal: a $10 million Endowment – contributing $400,000 each year for special endeavors. What a great, forever inheritance!

If you have questions about the Endowment Fund or would like to discuss your Lutherhaven legacy, please contact Kristi Rietze, Director of Philanthropy, toll free at 1.866.729.8372 or local, 667.3459, ext. 122 or at [email protected].

Laughing, loving, learning, leading. Camp words. Change words. All basic to Lutherhaven Ministries’ goal – be an in-strument of positive change in the world.

We believe by God’s love we are saved through faith—not because of anything we have done, not by works, but as a gift of God, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. -Lutherhaven’s core Scripture, from Ephesians 2:8-10

Stretching, serving, trusting, growing.

Change Happens Here!

I didn’t know that!

Developing Servant Leaders is a Lutherhaven key strategy. Service is one way we extend the depth of God’s love to the world – through hospitality, outreach, and leadership-centered programs.

In five years, 2,080 teens and their adult leaders from around the nation have participated in one of our week-long Idaho Servant Adventures. 500 more come this summer! That translates into more than 41,000 hours of simple, significant service – repairing a roof; painting a house; building a wheel chair ramp; cleaning a garage, basement or back yard; providing free Day Camp for children; and pairing with kids with disabilities for a week of sleep-over camp.

Servant leadership is always a two-way street: disadvantaged neighbors are served in real and significant ways, plus youth serving are also “served” – growing in faith, vocation, life skills and leadership capabilities.

“Young people’s faith becomes more durable with the presence of formative religious experiences early in their lives, even in the absence of religious parents or church ties. Most teenagers who commit to God do so before age 14.” -Souls in Transition by Christian Smith

Jesus happens here!

4/10ths of Lutherhaven’s Core Values –Jesus…the foundation of our being, activities, events, programs, and opportunities to embody His love

Faith Formation… rooted in the Lutheran tradition, sharing God’s love in ways relevant in our world right now

Relationships…built on Jesus’ love as we partner with people, congregations, communities and organizations

God’s Word…the living, active means by which God calls us to faith and forms us as God’s people

“Now this is life: that they know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
