On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? What is written in the Law? he replied. How do you read it?He answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbour as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live. (Luke 10:25-37)

Very often we think that to be a Christian is only to believe in a set of ideas. Sometimes even evangelism is thought to be convincing others of an ideology. This notion is often perpetuated in some seminaries where students go to study the doctrines of the Church. Despite the fact that doctrines are important, we cannot allow ourselves to be consumed by them to the extent

that they distract us from living the Christian life. The history of Christianity is dotted with utter cruelty committed in the name of dogma. The word dogma means required belief prescribed by the Church authority.

The Pharisees kept the law very piously but oppressed the poor. The truth of the matter is that dogma often lies at the margins of Christian life. They are important but they should not distract us from living the truth. When we live the truth we become part of a system that originates from heaven.

In the above text, the expert in Law asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life? I am sure the expert knew all about inheritance but it is uncertain what he meant by eternal life. The most commonly thought of belief in those days was that life can be lived forever in time. Yet the expert and many like him fear death and see in God a way to cheat death. But Jesus did not

economy, he is looking for the hands of mercy to go out there and participate in grace. That is what Jesus would have the expert in law understand! Eternal life is an invitation to participate in the economy of heaven.

Many Christians and Churches are so accustomed to living in a closed mentality. In most churches, we consume our time and will-power in our own internal affairs as if there is nothing else left to look in the world. There is no energy left to participate in eternal life. We are, in fact, more like the expert in the Law who pretended not to know his neighbour, and was solely concerned with the Law and who did not want to get his hands dirty. But these are rain on sand and it does not matter to us because we live in a stable society and economy.

But in Gods economy, no one nation is immune to the sinful nature of mankind. One day, and suddenly, we may wake up to find the roof over our head gone. Our jobs gone! Our wealth gone! Then we will ask, who is there to care for us? Undeserved as we are, God is merciful and will draw us into eternal life. However, the invitation to live is for now and is freely available to all.

While the expert in this story used the word eternal life in whatever sense he meant it, Jesus gave him a clear crisp answer which gives us an understanding of what Jesus meant by eternal life. It is to live it! Live it right now here on earth knowing that the hereafter cannot miss you!

Jesus goes on to explain eternal life by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. A man was attacked and robbed of his belongings (loss of worldly prestige); he was stripped naked (loss of identity); and was left for dead. He had become untouchable to the Jews because he was covered in blood. To help him would cost money, time, commitment and risk! We often think nobody saw the traveller being attacked so viciously but one person did watch this drama, and that was God. In his compassion, God would have wanted to help the wretched man. But the Samaritan, who was looked down upon by the Jews, ran to his help. The moment the Samaritan went to the dying traveller to help him, he was plugged on to the economy of grace that flows from heaven. His hands became the hand of God that helped the poor fellow.

Now, that is living life. It is not about correct doctrine of keeping the Law that buys you a ticket to heaven but participating in eternal life today. We do not have to judge the deservedness of the wretched and the poor. The injured traveller had nothing to give back to the Samaritan. Just like that the Rohingyas, the migrant workers, the drop-outs, the homeless, the mentally unstable, those who are affected by famine, typhoons, pestilence, genocide and warand the list goes on. The theme for this August 2015 issue of the Lutheran Herald is Eternity, which is eternal life in Jesus Christ. The Word of God in Romans 3:23 and 6:23 proclaim, All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When we were children, many of us had frustrated parents who asked us if we had really heard their reminder to finish an unwanted chore. We may have claimed to have heard, but our attitude and actions said otherwise.

As you think about your own response to the gospel, have you heard it? If so, how have you responded to it? Its easy to put off making a decision. And this becomes an even greater tendency when eternal consequences are at stake. But God wants us to make a decision about His Son.

The gospel is a simple but heart-penetrating truth. The Bible tells us that all of us have sinned and fallen short of Gods perfect standard of righteousness (Rom 3:23). The terrible consequence of this is that we are separated from a Holy God (Rom. 6:23).
